New to the area

I recently moved from Coney Island to Jackson Heights. It's been a month. Would love any suggestions for good food and any spots around that are calming as I enjoy morning walks.

Any face painting for Day of the Dead in the neighborhood?

Hi guys, title self explanatory. Are there any places around the neighborhood that do skull face painting for Day of the Dead?

Thank you!

Do you still feel Jackson Heights is safe?

I'm going to apologize in advance for sounding so negative. I honestly want to be convinced to stay in the neighborhood because I really love it.

I'm a NYC transplant, I live in one of the side streets off Roos Ave with my sister. We moved here 10 years ago. We sometimes walk home together and idk if it's just us, but Roos Ave looks far worse than it was pre-pandemic. Lots of open-air brothels, women waiting on street corners blatantly soliciting (even in front of the CityMD), men loitering about on the sidewalks (not sure if they're pimps or dealers).

I don't want to debate whether sex work should be legalized as this is not the point of this post. I don't judge them for their profession. But it is sad to see because of the implications of trafficking/coercion + I have to walk by them sometimes with my kid niece. Plus, I worry about pimps, gang activity, and the kind of men who visit this area.

I honestly love JH as a neighborhood. I love walking down 37th, visiting local cafes/restaurants, love the Open Street, love the diversity of cultures here. But recently we had a guest from another city stay over and they were very shocked at the conditions of the avenue and were very worried for us. There's also been lots of articles of how Roos Ave is getting worse. IDK how to gauge whether this is a normal city thing? Aside from this avenue, everything seems fine. How are people feeling about the safety of the neighborhood, particularly those living in residences closest to the ave?

Any decent fish mongers in Jackson Heights?

The salmon and catfish at the Foodtown 37th and 78th look roughly handled. Harshly butchered. Even bruised.

The Mi Terra on 80th and Northern, I’m uncertain.

Everything else other markets is prepackaged from a different location. Either not fresh, or has been unfrozen for some time.

The fish at Fruit Dollar Up large Korean market almost underneath the Woodside 61st street is great fish (and produce!)

But is a bit far.

Same with the two localish H Marts.

I can’t believe! that instead of an Asian market, Jackson Heights just got a (bleech) Pizza Hut.

Any fish marts monger ideas please?

Best Fried Rice in the area?

I have an obsession with fried rice, but I’m too poor to try out multiple places for the best. What do you consider the best fried rice in our area?

Where are my socially awkward people?

Just found out this sub exists. I’ve been living here for a year and haven’t made a friend, but there’s so much around to do. These things to do might mainly be restaurants and food carts, but at least it’ll get us outside.

Who’s looking for friends around the area, but you’re too shy to try? Dm me, I’m just a nerdy person who loves anime, gaming, cosplaying, and stuff (but you can like whatever).

Diversity Plaza harassment. Attention Ladies.

These losers (primarily two brothers, both are really tall) appeared over the past years and have made diversity plaza their turf. They sit in office chairs, openly drink and harass/catcall/throw objects at any attractive woman that passes by. I tried reporting them to local precinct but they didn't do anything. This is just PSA.

Edit: I am going to post a more clearer photo of them when I get a chance.

To whoever added that portapotty under the bridge on 69th Street - THANK YOU!

For months now I’ve been seeing houseless people pooping and peeing in the area, sometimes in hiding, other times in broad daylight near the dog park. Shout out to whichever organization was able to bring the portapotty over!

Hello, everyone. Where do all of you get your groceries? Money's been getting tight, and I need to reassess my options. Mainly looking for cheaper meat and produce. Thank you in advance.

Diwali and Dia De Los Muertos

Hi, I am very interested in the cultural celebrations from other countries. I would love to celebrate Diwali and dia De Los Muertos in Jackson Heights. However, I live in Hell's Kitchen, so my main insight into Jackson Heights comes from the eating in translation blog. I wonder if I can get some advice here about how to celebrate these holidays in Jackson Heights, and/or what other sources of information I can use. Would love any adult-friendly events. Thanks!

Learning Spanish in Jackson Heights

Does anyone have a tutor they recommend, or group classes in the neighborhood where I can learn Spanish as a beginner? After trying to order a birthday cake today at a bakery, I realized my Spanish is pathetic and I need to learn. I'd love to be fluent in Spanish but Duolingo and YouTube just isn't cutting it.

I looked online for places in the neighborhood but most classes are for English. Any recommendations for learning Spanish here?

NYPD

Over 100 NYPD gathered on south side of Roosevelt and 83rd. Couldn’t get an answer from the cops when I asked. Any clue?

Phone Stolen on 78th St – Stay Alert!

Had my phone stolen today while walking on 78th St between 35th and 37th Ave. The thief was riding an e-bike, came up onto the sidewalk, and took off toward Roosevelt Ave.

Just a reminder to stay alert when using your phone outside!
