The Greenhouse Reddit

Greenhouse - a structure with walls and roof made chiefly of transparent material, such as glass, in which plants requiring regulated climatic conditions are grown.[3] These structures range in size from small sheds to industrial-sized buildings. A miniature greenhouse is known as a cold frame. The interior of a greenhouse exposed to sunlight becomes significantly warmer than the external ambient temperature, protecting its contents in cold weather. Wikipedia: greenhouse

Greenshouse

Hi , Everyone.

I am planning to make a greenhouse to grow exotic plants on my own.

Need some help here. This is the frame I have built and would like some suggestions as to what should I cover it with ?

I plan to seal the whole structure with a 200 micron UV transparent sheet and ALUMINET/WHITE SHADE NET beneath it.

Sheet for light to come in and rainwater to slide down. ShadeNet/Aluminet to reduce the heat/light.

After packing it , I am planning to use honeycomb structures at one end which will continuously be drained with water and fans on the opposite wall so that cool airflow is maintained. also there will be fog emitters installed in the ceiling to cool the whols structure down.

Am I on the right path ? Please guide or suggest.

Also Is Aluminet good or Shade Net ?

Glass doors added to deck

I had this glass door added to my deck and I hope to use the space to grow more exotic plants. The upper trellis is all covered in fixed glass as well. I live in SW Denver.

It’s south facing and gets a lot of sun but the way the house extends will limit direct sun in morning and night. Is there an online resource where I can map the suns path at different times of year?

I don’t have a ton of venting options but I’m thinking I can get a device to slide the doors open and closed. Any recommendations?

I’m pretty handy / nerdy and want to use a raspberry pie to automate things like mist, temperature, door opening, etc.

What devices would you recommend? What would you do if this was your space?

Need door latch

I have hoop houses built with bent top rails and wood frame fronts and backs with doors made out of 2x4 covered in plastic.

Can someone please recommend a latching mechanism that will latch the doors closed (so wind won’t open them) but that can be unlatched from inside or outside?

I’m sure there exists this hardware but I just can’t find it.

Thanks!

Greenhouse as double duty- plants + home office?

Edited to clarify: I like desert plants, cacti, succulents, etc.. I’d probably be using a dehumidifier anyway for that reason, so I don’t imagine a humid, wet greenhouse scenario. I should have included that bit in my question to start with.

Hi all! I would love a small greenhouse so I can grow some of the more heat loving/tender plants (we are Portland, OR zone 8b). My husband would love to not have his home office continue to be down in our basement dungeon.

Assuming there is room for him amongst my plants, do any of you see an obvious problem with having one’s desk setup in a greenhouse? We’d have a heat source for winter, and definitely open it up in summer. I’m thinking something 10x10-ish, and have been looking at the ones on Planta’s website. I like the 2k price assuming it’s appropriately sturdy, etc., not looking for frills, but comfort to a reasonable degree that he’d want to hang out in there.

Would love your thoughts as to whether we’re nuts, and also reviews of Planta. Thanks so much!

Thoughts on spacing greenhouse away from main house?

My house has an L-shape, and I am considering placing a greenhouse in the “crook” of the ell - exposure is South and West and the house will provide wind break on North and East sides.

Does this idea raise any red flags, and how far away should the greenhouse be spaced away from the main house in order to give me sufficient access to clean out dead leaves, etc., yet still give windbreak benefits, etc. - I am currently thinking no less than 3’, so I can get a wheelbarrow in there, with gravel ground cover.

Note I do not plan to actually connect the structures.

Thanks <3

Built a greenhouse, haven’t caulked it yet

Is it ok to apply silicone caulk if it’s supposed to rain tonight? I have about 7 hours before it rains, should I caulk it now or try and buy a tarp to put over the whole thing for tonight ?

Water thermal mass question

We are finishing out a 10x16 twin wall polycarbonate greenhouse. Trying to figure out shelf placement and wondering, has anyone partially buried their black water barrels? I'm thinking it should still work as thermal mass, as well as taking advantage of the earth temp too. But will having only 1/3 of the barrel exposed to air change the heating/cooling regulation ability on the air temp inside the greenhouse? In other words, would it be like we only have 1/3 of the thermal mass because the rest of the barrel is surrounded by soil?

Maybe I'm thinking too hard about this, but having extra space for shelves isn't important enough to do all the work to dig those barrels in while negating their usefulness, you know?

How To Do Shelving?

I have the below greenhouse which is 7x10. By no means am I a woodworker, but I am handy, have tools, and can typically make most things that are reasonable.

I'm at a loss on how to do shelving on something like this? My wife wants wood shelving with a gap for draining but the corners are really messing me up on how to do shelfs. I cannot find much on YT so I am looking for tips. Would you do legs to support the weight or an angled brace with a back ledge be enough?

I'm thinking of doing one at the 3-4 feet range for height with a 4ft width and maybe a smaller shelf on the back that is 2 feet wide. I already have irrigation also ran inside the greenhouse so I wont have to manually water. Does anyone have tips on shelving or things you would recommend?

Any tips are appreciated! This is my first real greenhouse build.

Wifi thermometers for large greenhouse

I have a big geodesic dome, 36 ft in diameter that I'm hoping to use as a greenhouse this season. I'm planning on getting a GoVee thermometer that links to my phone so I can monitor temperature. My question is: do I need more than one thermometer for such a large space, or would one be sufficient?

Humidistat Hose Controller

Does anyone know of a water hose controller that can be triggered by humidity levels? I have a mist system in my tropical greenhouse and it connects to a Rain Point Smart+ controller so I’m able to set schedules but not sure if there is something out there that will trigger with humidity.

Geothermal heating question?

So my question is some people put 55 gallon drums of water in their greenhouse to retain a constant temperature. If I dig down and put those 55 gallon drums of water in the ground and cover with rock, just barely to where I can walk over them without noticing them will it still retain the heat in the winter and absorb the heat in the summer? It would just have a layer of rock over them? would it still perform the same?

Cheap greenhouse got wrecked in the wind, need advice on a new one

Hey everyone. My wife and I are entering our second season on our acre. Our cheap plastic greenhouse got blown over in some pretty nasty winds right before we needed to start some plants. In looking for a new greenhouse to buy they all look like either very cheap or astronomically exspenisve. There are a few kits that sell for around 400-600 dollars that have aluminium frames and use polycarbonate but I now have trust issues with these products.

While I’d like to build my own I don’t really have time at the moment and have a million other projects. If you all have any advice or really sturdy affordable greenhouses you can recommend it would be very helpful. Our space is around 6x10 ft.

DIY greenhouse

The door rusted and fell off, can't use it for the dog anymore and want to make it into a mini greenhouse.. how can I hang shelves off of the sides and what to use for them? I'd also like to have an area to hang plants, what can I put across the top for the support? I'm new to gardening and DIY projects

What indoor greenhouse has the highest weight capacity?

I'm looking for a heavy duty indoor greenhouse. I want to be able to attach grow lights. I have a few large plants that need to be moved due to the fact that my mother's cat likes eating my poisonous plants. It's too cold to put them outside. These are ethically sourced caudiciforms and a cycad. I've had them for years and I don't want to give them up.

Remove weeds from ground

Hi All. First time noob poster. I have a small greenhouse that came with the house. I'm not much of a gardener but have found it fun to try. I've automated as much as possible so I dont screw it up and have been doing alright.

The one issue I have now is during the winter months, weeds start growing from the ground. Last year I just went through a pick them up and would continue that as the year went on, but during the winter I dont do anything in the GH so when I'm ready to start again, I have a mess. Is there something I could use to kill off the weeds, without affecting the plants I plan to put in the above ground planters?

For info, when I started the greeenhouse the first year, I laid a weed preventing type mesh tarp (forget actual name) covering the ground, before putting the planters on top, but that only lasted a year, and now have weeds growing through or on top.

TIA

Heater/ Cooler/ Dehumidifier for 4x6 greenhouse

Hi, lovely people!

I've been gifted a hand-me-down 4x6 greenhouse and couldn't be more excited to embark on my first greenhouse adventure! I do have a question for you folks, though.

Is there a three-in-one heater/ cooler/ dehumidifier I can get for this thing? Or alternatives you'd recommend? I'm in TX

TIA!
