What’s up with Kstp.com only updating their website once in a while?

Kare 11 and Wcco want me turn off adblockers which I refuse to do so this leaves me with Fox 9. I do subscribe to the Strib.

New Teen Driver - Places learn the fundamentals behind the wheel?

Hi All, when you taught your kids to drive, where did you take them? Any good places to test out turning, parking, and accelerating without being on busy streets? Im mostly concerned with their first few times behind the wheel before we brave the open road.

MNBID car auction

Does anyone have experience with MNBID auction? when I check the sold vehicles, most of them were sold higher than the KBB value, I can even buy the same vehicles from dealers for $2k-3k less than the winning bids while they can't test drive. It doesn't make sense to me

Advice for getting rid of bricks

Pretty simple: I have a bunch of cement blocks (bricks, edging etc) that I don't want. I have no idea how to get rid of them and the information I've found on google is not very clear. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks! (Located in Minneapolis NE)

I need some help getting into a carpool from Saint Paul to Minneapolis.

Hello there, I need some help please,
I have tried to get to work through public transit however, if any of the 2 prior buses are not on time by a single minute, then I miss my 3rd bus which gets me to Eden Prairie (Work). I just need help getting a carpool from downtown Saint Paul (my location) to downtown Minneapolis. I then can get that bus to Eden Prairie (Work). This would only be temporary as my vehicle is out of commission for about 2 months. This would be just for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. I have tried to get to work, and I always miss the 3rd bus by minuets. I can compensate with gas, or we can work on whatever you need. I just need help getting to Minneapolis for a bit so I can get my car back. Please help me out here, I turned my life around completely since I started working here, I have 3 years sobriety under my belt and this job (which is my dream job) keeps that in check, I have no friends or family out here and have tried to reach out to resources for help. I'm begging for some help here, and I'm at my wits end. If you have any resources or info that can help with this, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you

Should I pay impark parking notice/ticket?

I hear a lot of different things from to just rip it up and don't park at any impark lots to pay it because they will send collections after you and it'll cost way more than just paying it. what have you all done?
https://imgur.com/aNWLRdI

Context: I yolo parked at their lot in St Paul because there was no street parking while i ran in to pick up food.

Favorite Thrift / Discount Furniture Shops in + around the Metro?

Hello, folks! In the process of moving + combining households with my partner, and we're in need of some pieces of furniture... so are posting here in hopes that you guys might have some recommendations on best thrift shops that might have a particularly bountiful selection of furniture!

Stuff like: Computer Desks, TV Stands, Dressers, Coffee Tables, Lamps, Bookshelves, maybe a decent Couch??

I know these kinds of places can often just be a "luck of the draw" kind of deal, but would love to know the go-to spots around the metro (20 mile radius??) that you've had luck with in the past! Thanks 🤘🏻

Hardwood flooring recs?

Hello! Relatively new homeowner here in St. Paul, and we’re looking to replace the upstairs carpet with hardwood flooring (not LVP). There are not magical hardwoods under the carpet (we checked immediately) but there is a subfloor. It’s about 360 square feet of space that would need to be refinished.

Any recs for contractors or companies to go through? We are on a budget and have discussed doing the floors ourselves but I’d like to price out our options first and would much prefer to hire this out if possible!!

Anyone/place to avoid? Anyone/place that we should give our business to?

Overhyped/Underhyped - 1 Year in the Twin Cities

Before moving here, I (29M) basically checked this subreddit everyday for 3 months and asked friends who lived here just to see what to expect. Now that I've been here for a year, I have some opinions on commonly said things about the TC. For context, I previously lived in DFW, Los Angeles, Taipei, and I only knew one person here before moving. No one asked for my opinion but I'm giving it anyways (very un-Minnesotan!!!).

Overhyped

  • Traffic - traffic is easy mode here. Besides a few interchange choke points and spots of construction, traffic isn't bad.
  • How cold it is - Barely overhyped. Yes it's cold as fk here but having good winter gear makes it ok. I am a firm believer of the phrase "there's no bad weather, just bad clothing" after moving here. We even kept up our daily runs when it was 15 degrees outside... which was interesting. The phenomenon of nose drip freezing on your face is not something I expected but I'd rather run in the cold than in the heat. We'll see how I feel about this when a real winter hits
  • How hard it is to make friends - It's the same amount of difficulty as other US cities. Making friends as an adult is hard. I feel like people in every city claim making friends is hard, then people who also have problems say the same thing to corroborate that story, then evidence is gathered assuming the conclusion is true (i.e "it's hard to make friends here because the winters are bad"). My only advice for people having trouble making friends - learn how to host and cook for people with a variety of dietary restrictions.

Underhyped

  • Food - I don't think I have a refined palette enough to judge food quality of many different cuisines. But for a metro population of this size, it punches above it's weight. There are some cuisines that I wish were better represented that I'll mention later, but I think people undersell how good the food is here. Favorites so far: Cheng Heng, Ariana, Diane's Place, and Laune Bread.
  • How active people are - People here seem to love being outside as much as people in Los Angeles. Even though the weather isn't as good here, there's still many people walking, biking, hanging out in beaches and parks. And in the winter, I still see many people outside ice skating, running, biking, walking, etc. which is something I was not expecting.
  • The parks system - 11/10 no notes.
  • Amount of sunlight in winter - THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST PART ABOUT WINTER. The sky getting dark at like 3:30pm is so sad. The cold wouldn't be so bad if there was more daylight. Y'all don't talk about this enough. I was not prepared
  • Fresh Thyme Market- I love this place. It's basically Sprouts but the sales are better.
  • Amount of diversity/immigrants here - I thought it would be mostly a bunch of Norwegian people here but it is way more diverse than I was expecting. The other day I played volleyball with some Hmong, Somali, South Asian, and German people and I was like damn I love Minnesota.

Correctly rated

  • Chinese/Taiwanese/Korean food - Firstly, it's not fair to compare most places in the US to Los Angeles/Dallas for Chinese/Taiwanese/Korean food. The sentiment I got from people here is that it's not great here and there are only a few spots to check out. And yea... it's just ok. Sole Cafe and Tea House are good though but that's about it out of all the places I have tried. There are basically no Taiwanese places here from what I understand but Taiwanese food isn't well-represented in most of the US anyways. It has forced me to be better at cooking though so that's good?
  • Bikeability - I bike for most of my errands and it's about as good as I thought given what people were saying. It's like 3 steps above places like Los Angeles and Dallas. The fact that I can bike to different suburbs mostly on trails is wild to me. However, there are some bike lane designs that are so obviously dangerous, particularly at intersections, that make me scratch my head as to what the thinking was in the design. Also drivers here are so much nicer to bikes and pedestrians than Los Angeles. They definitely are not perfect. But one time an older man swerved into the bike lane and almost hit me (at a low speed so not anything catastrophic even if he did). He then stopped, rolled down the windows and said sorry and good morning with a big smile lol.
  • Minnesota Nice - yea people are very nice here and non-confrontational. No notes.

Edit: Bolded something for people who jump to conclusions without reading the entire thing

Edit 2: Taiwanese food is not Thai food. Taiwanese food is from Taiwan. Thai food is from Thailand. C'mon y'all

Any recommendations for queer-friendly black (women’s) hair salons/stylists?

I have 4B–4C hair and am mostly looking for someone comfortable with doing protective styles like crochet braids, weaves, etc. They don’t need to be queer themselves, just non-judgmental! I’m willing to drive a good distance away from Minneapolis/St. Paul if necessary.

Opinions needed on childcare jobs

Teachers- what are your thoughts on big name centers? Primrose, kindercare, Gardner school, etc. Minnesota specifically. In need of a new job so just wondering if those are worth considering. Also, if not those how do people find a good place to work? I've been a toddler teacher for 8 years, have a degree, etc. I don't want to work in a church setting but I can't figure out how to find the right fit for me!

Any other related jobs would be welcome too, thank you!

A Retro Tech Enthusiast's Dream - Come see a computer that belongs in a museum! This Saturday...

Greetings Minnesota Technology Enthusiasts!

Free Geek Twin Cities is preparing to do something that has never been done before, and you are all invited to come see it.

This Saturday (9/21) the retro room will have a demonstration of an IMSAI 8080, a 1970s computer that is rarely seen outside of a museum. This computer was a donation that we have restored back to working condition. It has been tested with code that will play Fool on the Hill, but we have written some new code to make it play the Mario theme song!

If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about, here is the video from first time we made it sing: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/pFczLg9AixZYa2SY/

If that looks cool, stop by Free Geek Twin Cities this Saturday and tell the person at the front that you’re there to see the retro room. Retro volunteering is open from noon to 5, but coding is expected to start sometime between 2:00 and 2:30. And if the room is full, you can volunteer while you wait for your chance to see something that you’ll never see anywhere else!

Best Apple Picking?

with the chilly temps finally coming, my partner and I (as well as the entire metro i'm sure) are trying to go to an apple orchard this weekend. Any recommendations? we are willing to drive pretty far out to avoid the masses. Aamodt's is our usual place but I don't think I can deal with the crowds anymore. Thanks!

From the London Times: "Future of British sport or too much razzmatazz? My weekend in Minnesota"

Apparently the Vikings invited several UK journalists - including one of the sports writers for The Times - to come visit last weekend. Since the Vikes are playing in London in early October, I guess they thought they'd give the writers a taste of what (American) football feels like in the US. This is the result.

Clearly Goldy did not do a head-spin last weekend, or at least not one the author observed. Wanna talk about "razzmatazz" in Minnesota football, how can you miss that? 🤣

Severe storms likely this evening...

Edit: here's a great easy read summary from the NWS that gets updated. Twin cities area: https://www.weather.gov/mpx/weatherstory

Make sure you have your vehicles in a garage or parking ramp this evening. If you drove into work and can leave early you may want to as you could possible be stuck in traffic with hail

3-8 pm 60+ mph winds with large hail and possible tornados possible. That cold front is going to move in hard!

Of course stay turned for updates. This is a 9am hour post and updates will happen before the evening by our weather authorities.

New to Blaine, friends?

Hey y’all! I’m (27M) newish to Blaine… moved here in March, but travel all over MN,ND, and SD for work. Looking for ideas on how to meet people and make friends. Unfortunately I either work from home or on the road, so I don’t have an office as an epicenter. I’m trying to get more active through walking, running, and maybe some biking before it snows. I love card games, board games, and bar trivia.

I’m open to ideas, please help?

Small town guy originally from NW Illinois trying to get used to suburbia.
