I'm looking to purchase a used macbook for my daughter for school. It has 500 battery cycles with max battery at 84%. It's a 2020 Macbook Pro 13" with 512 hdd and 16Gb memory. I know nothing about Macbooks so I'm wondering how well this battery will hold up for all day college use. They are asking 700 for it. Looks to be in great physical condition. I'm just worried about the battery life over the next 3-4 years.
i wanna get a mac but im not sure what one would be best, and ive seen a lot of positive AND negative reviews, so im debating if i should even get a macbook at all or just choose another. all i want it for is writing, youtube, and probably roblox lol. what mac would run best? cause i’ve seen a lot of people say that it overheats easily and idk what to choose.
I’m a full-time independent graphic designer utilizing Adobe Suite (Illustrator/Photoshop/Indesign at all times) on a daily basis. I typically have about 8-10 programs open at any time, with Adobe being the most strenuous. I do not work with video or any 3-D imaging…point being, nothing more demanding than the Adobe basics.
I’m trying to choose an upgrade from my 2019 iMac (27-inch, 3.6 GHz Intel, 16GB ram) for my work station. I currently have an Apple Studio display as my primary monitor, and the iMac functioning as my secondary display.
My budget is $3,000. My plan is to purchase a second 27-inch monitor (something budget) to pair with the Studio Display, and then one of the following two options:
A) Mac Studio: Apple M2 Max with 12-core CPU, 30-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 64 GB unified memory, and 1 TB SSD storage. $2,799 price tag.
B) MacBook Pro: Apple M4 Max chip with 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 36 GB unified memory, and 1 TB SSD storage. 14-inch model. $3,199 price tag.
From what I can tell, the MacBook should be a slightly more powerful option, with the added benefit of allowing me to carry my work station with me wherever I go. It’s a little over my budget, but would justify it for the added benefit. I’ve never used a laptop as a CPU before though, and wasn’t sure quite how efficient that is.
I’d welcome any thoughts on which would be a better option for a work station.
NOTE: I already have a secondary laptop that I carry with me to clients, so the mobility is not a must have. However, were I to go the MacBook Pro route, I’d pass my current laptop down to my wife, not re-sale. So no cost benefit there.
I’ve been rocking a M1 Air base model since 2021 and it’s been able to handle everything I throw at it. More and more recently especially for work (developer), it’s starting to slow down for me with having multiple apps open, meetings, programming etc… sometimes I have to run docker containers too and it’s a nightmare running all that on just 8GB of ram
Someone is selling a MacBook Pro M1 512GB, 16GB ram, and 99% battery for $1250 CAD. Would it be worth it to upgrade?? Would it be better to upgrade M1 to M4? Appreciate some suggestions and advice!! Thanks!
Hi!
I am curious about this comparison. Does it match 4070 mobile?
So I’m about to come into some free time and I’d really like to do some digital housekeeping. I have a newer air, my wife has an older air, I just bought an new Mini with the M4, and last but not least there is about a 14yo iMac I need to remove some data from. Neither my wife nor I are “high power” users and they are mainly used for safari, mail, and some other basic functions. We’re not doing fancy photo or video editing and I do t need things to be lightning fast, though I don’t like the spinning wheel any more than anyone else. Not sure how much hard drive speed plays into that. My chief objective is kind of two-fold; I would like to collect and organize a couple of decades of photos, then make a good quality backup I can use for long-term storage. I think (correct me if I’m wrong) that it would be best to move my iPhoto library to an external drive. Also, I’m not super familiar with NAS, but I understand it as a concept and think this could be a good option (along with my music library). But is this even necessary if I park the drive on my router? What are the most practical options here for the 1)day to day storage attached to the machine and 2) for long term storage to keep offsite? (I should add, I’m trying to minimize our expensive cloud subscription). I’m assuming these are two different drives I need, but perhaps I’m wrong? Maybe it’s two of the same? I thought I was just trying to decide between hDD and ssd, but through researching particular drives I’ve learned of nvme and don’t know if that’s important to me. Also, should I be considering internal drives that are in housings rather than externals? ( they will rarely ever be moved). Can someone please help me unpack this into what I need to buy and how this should be set up? Thanks, so much, in advance !!
I have two MacBook Pros that I commonly need to switch between. I have one of them open on my desk and connected to a 40" 5k monitor when it's in use.
Rather than unplug/replug or KVM switch, I would love to simply swipe over to switch machines...but on both screens. So if Laptop A is open on the stand and connected to the monitor, and Laptop B is plugged in but off in the corner, with a swipe (or two swipes, one on each screen) both the 40" monitor and the screen on Laptop A display the stuff running on Laptop B, as if Laptop B was plugged into the monitor.
Is there any way to do this?
I've tried:
I thought about trying a variant of #2 where I plugged an HDMI EDID emulator into Laptop B, which would make it think it has a second monitor plugged in, but I can't find any that will emulate a 5K display resolution.
Also which monitors do ya’ll recommend for under 300?
I am thinking of upgrading my MacBook and want a 16inch model. Is M4 Pro with 12/16 core and 24gb enough for my Diablo 4 gaming and Lightroom/adobe photoshop work with multiple raw image processing? Or, should I get 14/20 and upgrade ram to 48gb?
Or, should I ditch the M4 Pro and go with Max that comes with already 36gb ram?
I just spent over 3 hours writing in the Notes app. Once finished, I copied what i had written(I 100% did not use the “cut” function) and then my Mac powered off due to low battery level. I just turned my laptop back on and everything i wrote was GONE… is there any way for me to look at the edit history of this note or somehow get all my work back? im so pissed. please help, this is ridiculous.
I currently have a 2018 Macbook Pro Core i5 - 8GB SSD 256. I am a final year law student at university who will also have to undergo a masters. My use cases are typical office tasks, however I do need the possibility of gaming now. Although, worth mentioning I have a M2 Mac Mini and a studio display (overkill I know). But the display is beautiful and I can't get over how fast it is.
Do you think it's worth upgrading to the 2024 M4 Macbook Pro for my portable needs given my use case?
Thanks for your help in advance guys!
Or just waste of money?
What is the main problem of my overloading app storage because I can't seem to find an app that takes that much storage.
I get an Apple Magic keyboard with my new iMac with the new Touch ID button, but it is located where my 'eject' key is on my current keyboard. How can I use this button with the combination ctrl-eject for shutdown and alt-cmd-eject for sleep?
I am in the creative field and I wanna get a mac mini in the future and was wondering if i could get the mac mini and use my lenovo ideapad as a monitor/keyboard-mouse unit. So i could have a really fast, macOS computer and have access to my windows laptop in the same device. Is it possible? Is it worth it?
i don’t think i need it, but i’m getting an m4 mac mini and wondering how things will change in the future. the pro is much more expensive and the regular i plan to get is already expensive as it is
but i guess the only way i could need it is if apple released an updated studio display at the same price as the current one
On the new Mac mini, how do I hook up my hard drive that USB-A connection? And then, would you go for 256 or 512go version?
I’ve got this Mac Mini 2018 off an old customer. It has automatic login enabled on to the admin account. I’d like to reset the whole thing, but I cannot get into disk utility while booting. Any tips? Different key combinations during boot don’t work, I think it has fast-boot enabled too…
So this has been a question I ask myself everytime I want to buy a Mac since the first time I bought one. I lovea desktop setup but also value portability. So have preferred to go with a MacBook and use it in clamshell mode at home.
My question is, is there any real performance difference/pro v con between identically spec’d MacBook vs a macmini and what do people think?
Yesterday, I upgraded to this Mac from my 2019 Intel 16” MacBook Pro (i7, 16GB RAM). I mainly use Pro Tools for film sound editing and mixing, with some 4K editing and transcoding. Next week, I’ll be editing a 12-camera 4K concert, so I’m wondering if this setup will be enough for 5 years.
Should I cancel and get the M4 Max instead? It offers two video engines and more GPU cores, though I’d drop from 48GB to 36GB RAM and getting M4 Max for $400 more.
I currently own an intel MacBook Pro, I do video editing on it, anywhere from 10-20minute videos 4k.
The thing burns hotter than the sun and barely lasts on battery while performing my daily tasks.
Anyway, I don't really know how well the M chips perform.
For my job l also use Docker to do coding. Would the base m4 pro be enough? Would I need to increase the ram?
What about 14 core CPU / 20 core GPU? Is this necessary?
Folks.. i can't login to my mac (M1) after updating to 15.1 recently (may or may not be related to OS update).
Seems to me like a "Software" keyboard/keystroke issue which is causing the inputs to be recognised/display in a different language..
Easy solutions if any?
