Daily reminder all: put a GD AirTag in your 4Runner! Look up on YouTube how to disable the speaker and hide it somewhere. Constant tracking if it's near an iPhone. I never had mine stolen but the previous owner did.
My neighbor has what appears to be a 1st 4Runner that hasn't been driven in quite a while, judging from the moss and lichen growth. He probably wants to get rid of it, so I'm looking into talking to him and purchasing it. My plans are probably to flip it -- although I love these trucks, I'll be transferring colleges soon and it wouldn't be practical to keep it around.
My main question is: What should I look out for, considering it hasn't been driven for a while? I'm okay with surface-level wrenching, but if there could be issues with the oil really gunking up the engine block or serious rust, I'm not sure that it would be a great idea to spring for it. Any experience is greatly appreciated!
P.S. I'm aware of rust issues on these cars. I'll try to get it under a lift to ensure that no components are genuinely rusted away. Mostly concerned about the engine and any issues that would take more than a few days and a few hundred dollars to fix. Thanks!
Sooooo I just replaced my clutch everything went well except when putting the starter back on one of the casing screws slipped into the bell housing. I searched and tried magnets and couldn’t get anything so prayed I just dropped and lost it. Well started it up and I can hear it rattling in the bell housing 🤦. I really don’t want to drop the transmission again how bad of an idea is it to make the weep hole larger to try and pull the screw out?
My ex-girlfriend's blue 1986 4Runner got stolen last night, near Brockhurst/Martin Luther King Jr Way. It had two fuckin' Clubs on it (steering wheel and clutch Clubs).
Here are a couple pics of it. I know it's a total longshot, but figured I'd drop something in here just in case anyone in the Bay Area happens to see it.
Last time it was stolen, I had an AirTag in it and found it right away. Once we broke up, I took that out. Unfortunately, she never put a new one in it.
Thanks everyone.
I just picked up an 89 4runner SR5. It’s got the 3.0 and runs exceptionally. The previous owner poured 8k into it it to make it good for her daughter. Rebuilt 3vz, whole new front end, new tranny, clutch, tcase, starter, everything. It has zero leaks and feels perfect. The mechanic who did the work told me if I kept the coolant topped off and the fluids fresh it will go forever. I still want a a 3.4 eventually but also want to love what I got. Are there any positive experiences out there with the 3.0?
Hi all! I’m trying to help fix a common problem. A lot of oem b pillars brake down, crumble and look terrible after 40 years! I’ve started to manufacture replacement pillar covers for all the owners that want to replace worn out sets!
I dare you to read the reviews 😏
Flying to pick up an ‘85 in Texas this weekend and I’m wondering if y’all know any specific points or items I should be checking upon initial inspection when I get there to purchase it. Anything unique to the year I should be aware of? Anything specific to first gen’s I should be aware of? I’m familiar with the newer Toyotas but have never had hands on a first gen before. Very excited. Any advice would be appreciated!

Just picked up an 89 3.0 v6 and it’s pretty cherry except for the exhaust. Tons of holes and corrosion. Looking at putting a Brexhaust in it which is what magnaflow has on their website this engine. Curious if anyone has any thoughts on the matter
i am posting this for my boyfriend. he doesn’t like to post on social media or ask for help 😂, but he’s stumped on what the problem is. he has a few theories, but i thought I would post it here and see if anyone has experienced this before.
it’s a 1986 4runner, it has a 22re and its a 5 speed. the video is the the problem he is having, it won’t rev past 4 grand while driving or in neutral. he’s replaced spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel hanger.
Hey y'all, I'm looking to sell my dad's '87 4runner but have no idea how much we should be asking for it. The engine overheated and warped and we don't have the time/money/skills to have the engine replaced or do it ourselves.
Basically everything under the hood is currently disassembled. According to the shop that tried fixing it the engine was warped so the cylinder pressure can't get above like 30-60 and the radiator line needs replacing as well as the thermometer. The engine block was resurfaced but the heads are also pretty badly warped.
We were told we could probably still sell it but don't know how much we should ask for. So any advice y'all have would be appreciated.
Ordered an OSK timing kit and have all the other parts to replace. Just need a rec for a mechanic to out it all in. North Georgia or Atlanta area preferred. Thanks!
Does anyone recognize this bracket? I took it off of the motor / EFI / intake manifold somewhere... it's a 86 4runner 22re. I can't remember where it was or what it's purpose is. Anyone else ever have this leftover part after changing the head gasket? SMH
Did toyota plan so far ahead that in 1986, they knew 40 years later I'd need a laptop stand? I'd like to think so.
Hello folks,
I picked up this 1988 4runner off craigslist last week and so far its been great. I'm excited to see where itll take me in the future.
It has a little gremlin I'm trying to sort out right now. It warms up at about 2000 rpm (high?) super solid and relatively quickly. Once it idles down to about 1K I'm having this issue where it will sometimes drop in rpm to around 7-800 and bog down, lose power almost sort of stall out.
The rpm drop happens regardless of whether or not I'm in gear but essentially the result is that I'll go to accelerate and the truck will lose power and basically go limp at which point I will try to pull over and usually restarting it seems to fix it momentarily.
I'm new to 22re engines and from the research I've done it seems like the EGR has been deleted but I'm not 100% sure. It has some aftermarket airbox on it which I've already ordered the stock parts to replace as I've heard these engines prefer the more restrictive intakes.
Smells pretty rich when it runs but it also doesn't have a cat so that could be it.
Anyways, hoping for any insight as to what might be going on or how to trouble shoot. Just tried to get a video and of course no luck, thinking maybe I just need to let the engine warm up fully before trying to accelerate.
Sorry if this was a lot to read.
TLDR: ENGINE SEEMS TO WARM UP FINE BUT I GET A ROUGH IDLE, BOG DOWN AFTER WARMUP. photos of engine attached if they help. Thanks in advance for any help.
