Advice needed! Recs for used vehicle (pref compact/cross/mid SUV) for >$8,000??

Looking for something reliable, decent gas mileage, AWD or 4WD (snow/ice and some rustic roads/farmland). I plan to install tow package for occasional use—mostly to pick up hay. I have been looking at Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4?

—Where to look/websites? Dealership or private seller?

—Vehicle recs? Years to avoid? Highest mileage? What to look for when viewing service history and when viewing the vehicle itself (general things and anything specific to make/model)?

—I'm seeing lots of "prior salvage" vehicles listed at reduced prices. If a car has been repaired from salvage and passed inspection, would you still avoid it?

TIA!

2003 Altima: Steering wheel shakes but only when I flick the steering wheel either left or right within the steering wheels "freeplay" zone.

When I am going straight or actually turning I have no vibration at all in the steering wheel but if I am driving straight and flick the wheel a tinsy bit to the left or right just to the point I feel some resistance but before the wheels themselves actually move I get a vibration in the steering wheel. What component could that be?

Help me find a truck

Hello - I'm looking for a new truck that would be similar to a GMC Canyon from the 80's.

My requirements are:

Stick shift , Small V-6 or 4 cylinder, six foot bed, 'regular' cab ( just a plain cab, not a super or extended ) , 16" wheels.

That's just some of the basics, but if you search for an '83 GMC Canyon, you'll get the idea.

Thanks for any ideas.

Financing with a dealership’s lending option for a better sale price but a higher APR, how soon can I actually refinance?

I’ve verified that the dealership’s lender doesn’t charge any early payoff fee’s however, I don’t want to be stuck with the higher rate for longer than I need to be. I’ve read that you have to wait for anywhere from the day after purchase to 60-90 days after the first payment is due. If I can refinance ASAP, I’ll avoid another hard inquiry on my credit. Advice?

Citroen C4 Picasso: Right outside mirror brocken.

I need help please. The right wing mirror of my Citroen C4 Picasso is broken. The electrics still work completely, but the screw-in mechanism is broken. mirror is loose.

unfortunately it was our mistake. therefore the insurance does not pay.

Apparently a new original Citroen mirror costs over €500.

that's a lot of money. Unfortunately I can't find a replica and the mechanic says so too.

Isn't there really a cheaper model or a better solution to my problem?

Edit: I don't care what the mirror looks like. The main thing is that it fits.

U-Built idea, would like input

Ubuilt idea, need input

I hope this is the right place to ask this kind of question, if not, sorry.

Vehicle requirements in my area are pretty relaxed (have seatbelts/lights/doors, and have receipts for all parts) so I am not particularly focused on legality for this thread.

My idea is to essentially built a street-legal go kart, in the body (painted sheet metal) style of a square box (similar to how older volvos and ladas look). On the absolute most basic chassis/frame (tube steel) I can weld/bolt together.

I intend to stay on a somewhat limited budget (obviously not gonna cheap out and start using Mattel plastic for the frame or anything unsafe like that, but I'm gonna keep it as basic as I can keep it)

As such my issue comes to drivetrain, I have very little direction here, except its defining trait of being underpowered.

I'm going to use essentially a lawnmower/ATV/go kart engine. Ideally some higher end honda gx. my issue comes to transmission now. It being underpowered, I dont wanna piss off the guy behind me when I pull off from a red light, at least not too much. What transmission should I use that would keep with the idea of being lightweight, cheap, and as simple as possible? Additionally should I use a belt and make it FWD, or build a driveshaft/diff and make it RWD?

Any other input would be highly appreciated! I intend to try and make it this summer and hopefully be roadworthy, so I can get to and from work/school, and maybe get groceries in it. Just keep in mind I would like to keep things as cheap as possible, even if at the sacrifice of performance and comfort.

The TRUE story of the last Pontiac Made!

Thankfully, the final Pontiac vehicle ever made, a 2010 G6 in Summit White, was not totaled back in 2015 like some have said. An example on this very Reddit posted last year stated that what was THOUGHT to be the final Pontiac met a very untimely death & its remains are now somewhere in Mexico.

I've always been intrigued with "the end(s)" of things, and Pontiac was no exception. One cool thing that "Old" GM did was, at the end of each month, post their vehicle production reports for their investors, available right on their website. I was collecting these just to peruse later on, after hearing all the stories regarding the final US Pontiacs manufactured in November, 2009... along with the final Mexico Pontiacs, manufactured in December, 2009.

Yes, I believed those dates signified the end of Pontiac as well, until I came across this Production Report from January, 2010, and to my astonishment, saw what it said under the Orion Assembly Plant for Pontiac G6's manufactured in the 2010... CALENDAR year: https://investor.gm.com/static-files/0d7f67cf-2921-4d97-ad26-1a6e75a3e7bf

A single G6 manufactured two months after all those other G6's were manufactured back in November? And the ONLY 2010 Pontiac manufactured in... 2010? There had to be something behind this.

I connected with Orion's Plant Communications Manager back in 2015, and he pretty much confirmed that yes, this was the final Pontiac manufactured.

Here is the VIN: 1G2ZA5EK7A4166963 (The previously-mentioned Pontiac's VIN from the above article.... the one that was totaled, was 1G2ZA5EB5A4166962)

Build date? January 4, 2010. The ONLY 2010 Pontiac manufactured in calendar year 2010.

Lastly... the final Pontiac is safe & sound... had never been in an accident, and is located HERE!

Happy Motoring!

Blinkers/turn signal lights not working on Kia Cerato/Forte 2016

Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me or guide me on what to look for. I paid for a full interior detailing done to my Kia Cerato/Forte 2016 which was impeccable, however the same day at night the turn signals/blinkers did not work, they turned off instantly After using the switch on the side of the steering wheel, the same with the brake lights. The dude who did the detailing took care of it, managed to make the headlights work, however, the taillights and turn signals/blinkers still do not work even the side mirror lights aren't working, we have not come up with the solution. Could it be that the steam or humidity has damaged something? Maybe the chemicals he use on the dashboard damaged the wires or something? Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions.

Why is there no plug-in hybrid thats primarily EV with a small motor for assist and charging

Sorry if this vehicle is already there or if this has been discussed already, this is kind of the one Top Gear except its a dynamic one:

70kWh + 70HP 2cylinder

Primary drive source is 70kWh till 70% throttle after that is 70HP 2cylinder assists.

70HP 2cylinder charges 70kWh below 70% throttle when battery is below 50%(or something)

70HP 2cylinder power drive train with 70kWh above 70% throttle

70kWh can be charged via plug or via 70HP 2cylinder (when parked outdoors)

Pre 1990s cars that can actually be found under $10,0000

Title. I'm in college and want to start saving up for a car. Something retro, something old money. Prefferably not reeaaally a "project car" -- something I can work on over time, but also should be in decent working condition out the gate.

I see all these "underrated car" posts and articles and when I actually go look that car up, its like $20K. I can't afford that!

Note that I am in Canada, so my perspective is in CAD, but it doesn't matter. I'll take all suggestions. I particularly like the style of cars like the Datsun 280zx or 1st and 2nd generation camaros, but those cost a pretty penny. Looking for similar but more under-the-radar cars.

Should I repair and use for another year or so or wait and spend a bit more for a new one?

Hi everyone, new here. I have had my used and old Peugeot 206 cc 2.0 for a year almost two. The latest (spend over 1k EUR on it already) that the transmission needs to be fully changed. This will cost me around 300 euros but at this point I am not sure if I have the nerves as something else will come up. However I start late shifts in the office and there will be no transportation when my shift ends and I live in a shady neighbourhood. My second option is to just wait until late July and look out for a Mazda 3 1.6 from 2010 that is about 5k euros at best as I want something not that old and almost my age. What do you think and what advise would you give as I am desperate at this point. I know that is my decision at the end but I want some more advices so I have different opinions. Thank you to everyone that shares a bit of their wisdom!!!

Why are so many technicians leaving the auto repair industry

I was encouraging my brother-in-law to pursue a career in auto repair, he loves it - so it made sense. Ford Auto Tech Scholarship is investing $2 million in scholarship funding to support students pursuing careers as automotive technicians. I saw in the article that there is a shortage of auto techs, but it gave no reason why. For those of you in the industry, why are techs leaving? What can fix this issue?

The older lady down the street said she'd sell me her late-husbands car for $6k since it has some issues. Good deal?

She said it's missing the Cadillac converters and makes a weird noise when you're on the gas. It's a manual so I would have to have it hauled since I can't drive one like that. The book value is like $10k so I think it's a good deal and it's mowing season so I'll make some extra money on the weekends soon. Plus the weed eater should fit in the back. Is this a good deal or should I try to find something else?

Time for a new car?

So I have a 2010 Honda accord with 120k miles. I bought it brand new back in 2010 and for years it’s been good to me and only had to do regular upkeep. However its age is starting to show. The interior is falling apart. The driving wheel is peeling off, mirrors are fading, the roof lining has detached off and I had to staple it back on and some other things as well. It does odd sounds now when driving and my fuel economy has gotten worse I believe. Yesterday I got a check engine light come on. I’m pretty sure it’s something fixable but at this point should I just start looking for another car? I think 15 years is a good life for a car.
