Good day y'all I am going to be attending college in the spring session up in Michigan and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on what to do to prepare for this trip. I'm a black male who will be traveling alone and plan to stop in Missouri. For the first leg of the trip. The tip should be about 19 hours total. If anyone has any recommendations and advice please feel free to share.
I drove up to Seattle from Austin back in mid September and the drive was great. I went from Austin to LA, then North to Seattle. Basically took I-10 over to I-5. Had some detours for sight seeing but did it in just over 2 days. I am likely driving back to Austin toward the end of the month (Nov). IIRC, I thought I saw signs that may may require chains on this route. I won't be able to do this and I'm driving a Mustang, so really would like to dodge snow/ice as much as possible. Was planning on taking 101 south until I can pick up the I-5 in Sacramento and then take it to I-10 along the border. Is there anywhere I'd need to worry about along the route to bypass? I've driven all over the country, day, night, rain, snow, ice storms. More worried about lack of traction with the car. I usually road tripped with 4x4 or AWD and never really worried about it.
I'm moving north for work. Have a spare seat, but I'm not going to have time for sightseeing. So if anyone is interested in making a road trip from Sydney to Cairns as fast as possible, hit me up. I'll be hitting the A1 on saturday the 16th of nov. A1-> M1-> Bruce hwy. Hopefully getting to Cairns on 18th.
My husband and I are currently taking a road trip through America. We rented a car rental from LA, not far from LAX.
When we picked up the car, the employee asked where we are going. We listed various places including the Grand Canyon. The employee serving us then said their car rentals cannot leave California or Nevada, and must remain within these States. I looked at my husband and said perhaps we need to find a different rental. Another employee overhead us, and said "don't worry, you aren't leaving Nevada or California are you wink wink". I replied I didn't want to drive anywhere we arent covered by insurance. He said "I didn't tell you this, but don't worry, you'd be insured".
I looked at their website and it says if we leave the State, we are NOT covered by insurance and may incur fees (not specified what fees or how much, it says to call their office to find out).
I guess I have 2 questions:
EDIT: thank you everyone for your advice. We have rented a different car from Vegas to get to the Grand Canyon.
Hey! I’ve been living in Melbourne for a couple of months already and my sister is visiting for a couple of weeks. We’re planning to go on the GOR this next weekend but have no idea where to start on the itinerary; we have to days available. We would like to be back to Melbourne by 4:00 pm ish by the next day tho, maximum. Do you guys have any suggestions for an itinerary? All I know is 12 Apostles is a must.
I need ideas on which places me and my bf should sight see or a "have to go" places to stop at while on our way to Oregon. We are driving from hou, Tx with a toddler and a larger vehicle in December. So any ideas that are family friendly, diners or parks or monumental places would be exciting. I would also love some tips or even advice and it would be greatly appreciated.:) ! This is not my first roadtrip I've done plenty of trips to Michigan and south of Texas but never to the west side of the U.S .!
I have to move from san francisco to oklahoma city around mid december.
I will travel via I-10 to avoid flagstaff AZ until El Paso, but after that which route should I use to oklahoma city?
Possible routes are:
Which plan should i use or do you have any other better route?
I'm leaving Tampa to drive back to Seattle tomorrow (Sunday). My wife and son are flying into Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday and driving the rest of the way home with me. We have rented a cabin for a few days in Ouray, CO but after that not sure what way we will go home.
Looking for suggestions for a neat place to stay in Wyoming, Montana or Idaho on the way home. I don think I can drive through Yellowstone due to winter road closures? I have a 4WD pickup and am well versed in driving in the snow so thats not much of a worry.
Hi, my husband and I are moving back to the West coast in December (possibly January) with our baby who will be 5 months. We will be driving an AWD Toyota Sienna and towing a 4x8 U-Haul trailer and are not in any rush to get there. Seeking advice on which route would be the safest during the winter time. We don’t really know where to start. I do know that it is important to be checking the weather every day and that we may have to change our route as needed. Thank you in advance!
I'm coming over to the states from Europe and landing in Los Angeles on 16 November and then flying out again on 01 December. I'm picking up a car and the plan was originally to drive up CA-1 to San Francisco and then up the Oregon coast all the way to Portland. However, as a large portion of CA-1 is closed, now thinking if I should just take I-5 instead. If I do take I-5, how safe would it be to sleep in my car in a rest area. Also, it seems unless I get lucky with the weather, then the drive up the Oregon coast could be raining a lot, so seems pointless driving up the coast if not going to be able to see anything. So, now thinking about driving to South Lake Tahoe after San Francisco for a night. Then onto Zion, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and then back to Los Angeles. I was researching the route from South Lake Tahoe and some people were suggesting to go via Death Valley. Is this better than the basin route. Is the Joshua Tree also worth visiting.
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to be in a hire car, so any routes that would require snow chains are a no no and it is a rear wheel drive sport coupe, so this could also affect the potential routes that I can take. Will there be much police, or speed cameras along the routes.
Hi! My friends and I are looking to do a cross country road trip this summer and was wondering what the cheapest/most logical option was to renting a vehicle. We would be flying into San Diego and ending back in New York, and plan for to take around 3 weeks-month for the whole trip. We’ve been considering renting a car from different places, or maybe a RV/camper situation, buying a car in San Diego and selling it afterwards, or looking for some type of car relocation situation. Does anybody have any experience/advice on this? Thank you!!

My family (2 adults, 3 kids, 1 small dog) are interested in taking a roadtrip the week of Thanksgiving. We have taken multiple road trips to Colorado, Florida, etc and want to desperately get out of TX and see mountains, lakes, possibly even snow and experience some culture. Somewhere within 15 hours from north Texas (DFW area) is good. What are some good spots to visit during Thanksgiving? I was thinking about ski resorts but read that they may not be open yet.
I’m leaving Washington to Florida Monday any suggestions on routes to take
Driving for a photo project that will cover the weird and wacky state of the United States right now. The goal is to be in dc on Election Day and the few days after to watch the results affect the city and the path leading to DC. Does anyone know of any interesting and out there things to document that you feel would help create a metaphor for where we are at as a country? OR a place to find people (no matter the political affiliations) to interview and document?
We are running an independent publication that we will release after we get home
I'm moving out of my house in Washington back down to the bay for school, and I want to make a trip out of it. My only concern is that this is mid winter and I'm not sure what areas will be dangerous to drive through, and what attractions won't be worth it (or are even more worth it given the winter landscape) I would love some ideas on where to go and what to see as ive never done a big trip like this before and haven't seen any of the state in-between stops!
Looking for some interesting or off the beaten path stops between Joplin and St Louis. I looked through the archives but didn’t see any discussions about this stretch of highway. We’ll be staying the night somewhere in there too. Thank you!
Planning for a road trip Mumbai to Karnataka. A week off to travel. Can anyone suggest itinerary ?
Hello everyone! We’re(me and my husband) visiting Qatar for the first time on a 3-day road trip from Saudi, and we’re really looking forward to exploring! We recently visited Dubai and loved it, so we’re excited to see what Qatar has to offer. We’d appreciate any advice on the following:
Thank you so much for any recommendations!
Hi Roadtrippers, I'm driving cross-country from Los Angeles to Virginia Beach starting December 27th and am curious what route folks would advise taking. I'll have 10 days for the trip and need to arrive by January 5th.
My ideal route is pictured and would hit a few cities I've been curious to visit (Vegas, SLC, Denver, KC, and St Louis). I'll be driving a 2012 Lexus RX350 and will carry chains, insulation, a sub-zero sleeping bag, cooler, and large portable charger. My plan is to sleep in my vehicle but am fully prepared to spend on hotels as needed (flexible budget).
For any of the above, recommendations for sight-seeing / places to visit either within cities or along routes are welcome! Thank you for your thoughts and time.
Hey! My partner and I (25) are travelling from Australia to America in April 2025! I’m wanting to hear your must see cities, states, experiences etc
So far we want to go to NYC and LA Experience a baseball and basketball game but are open to everything!
Hello!
Me and my boyfriend are going to be going on a 21ish hour road trip to Arizona this upcoming Wednesday, planning to leave around 4am.
— We are moving there full time! Selling everything at home and taking maybe 2-3 bags of things each, along with necessities like water and snacks. Also our two cats!
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for things to do, quick places to stop or maybe just something to keep us busy and awake during the ride, haha.
We're going the Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma & finally New Mexico route if this makes any difference. It'd be best to keep on the road as much as possible, but if there any quick sights to see, that's alright.
TYIA!!
