I bought a 1987 Toyota Mr2 recently that does not run and sat outside for 2 years. I have to replace the timing belt and water pump before I can try to turn it over. Apparently the job is pretty tough and people have talked about replacing the alternator while you are doing it since the alternators go bad because water comes through the vents and drips right onto the alternator. Ideally I dont want to replace it if I dont have to. Is the only way of knowing if the alternator is bad to do the timing belt job and then get the car running?? I dont know much about cars but when the timing belt was snapped and the previous owner saying it needs a new water pump I assumed I needed to do that job before I could try and start it. Is that correct?? any advice is very appreciated.

So im looking to do a clean and easy wiring setup with my car I've wired up subwoofers before but I don't know if the wiring for what I want to do will work.My thought process is I connect a wire to the positive terminal on the battery and run it to a new fuse box from there run all the positive wires from my accessories to the fuse box. Here's where I'm not to sure, can I just ground all the accessories to the chasis that way I'm not running extra wires around the car. My next concern is by doing it this way do I have to worry about parasitic draw. If thats the issue is there any way to set it up to where they all turn on and off with the car. Any advice will be appreciated
So I’ve got a project that it pains me to sell, but live happens and I need the cash.
When I bought the truck, i used my own research of CL, eBay, FBM to get a feel for what I wanted was going for. Now, those avenues are not as full with project vehicles as they once were (at least IMO). How / where does everybody get their values for their projects?
48 Pickup with original equipment, doesn’t run, body / frame surface rust only.
So
Had fitted an AEM Cold Air Intake (Acura RSX) that routes behind the bumper. However I did not think it was going to be this loud. Is there anything I could do to make it a little quieter? Maybe some sort of resonator or muffler ? Anything that might help.
Hello, I own a rather low car (a Porsche 924), and, even if I don't plan on going off-road with it, and cross rivers, I however plan on modifying the interior and add lots of electrical equipment.
Right now, all the seals are dry and water kind of gets inside sadly. So I'm wondering what it would take to make the car completely water proof, and prevent water from coming inside even when the car is hood deep in water.
Right now, there are several holes everywhere, the doors, a hole for cables to go from under the dash to the engine bay, the gear stick hole, and several holes that were beneath the carpet and covered by sound deadening.
How would you proceed to completely seal the car from water? Thx for y'all help.
Hi
I am new to project cars - but wanted to select a 1987 Trans Am Firebird as I like the car and it was cheap - I have not bought it yet. Carfax is cleaned but has not had any checks since 2015. Spoke to the guy - his friends bought it from someone and they fixed a few things - but could not get it to start - then this dude got it and he fixed the distributor - and got it started - the young guy is still at school - the car can start - some corrosion on the engine - but a bit of gamble - - the lights work but don't flip up and the trunk does not properly close - seems simple fixes. Does not have a title but in my state cars before 1997 - are considered classic and dont require title
any tips I should check for before buying the car ?
Progress in the XT Falcon build! I’m grafting an XY side panel into the engine bay to add boosted brakes.
Picking away at a budget Battle Car for winter commuting. Anybody have a recommendation for a basic remote starter that will work with a manual transmission (ie a jumper to select between manual and auto transmissions) so that reservation mode needs to be used?
I've installed several before, but I can't find any units anymore that can be set with a jumper instead of programming, and local shops either won't touch a manual transmission or want to charge $900+ for labour
But all 4 tires are shot, don’t hold air, dry rotted, so I can’t drive it to the tire shop (10 miles away) so took all 4 off at the same time to get the tires replaced .
After I was able to fix the front floor and the firewall, I install the repaired cowl:
Repaired cowl reattach to the firewall
I fix the front right frame, someone hack the frame (probably to weld the K-Member attach) and did a really bad job closing the hole. I did my best, it look better and is much more solid now.
I install the new inner fender, since they were build for 1971-72 Charger, they did not fit correctly, I did some modification to the panel and use steel bar to reinforce the attachment to the firewall.
I did some fender and hood fitment check, just in case I did screw up something. Everything look OK.
I was getting tired of having the car on stand, it was not level and was not really stable also.
I rigged two support (front and back) with some square metal tubing and left over wheels. The cradle is level, much more stable and also higner, it's easier to work under it now.
I start the task of cleaning the back underside of the car and remove the rear floor.
That's it. I am repairing the left rear side of the frame/suspension attach and will weld the rear flooring. After that it's the trunk and the section bellow the door.
Hey everyone, looking for some quick advice. So i am in the process of getting myself ready for the next project car in my life. Like many people on this subreddit i am a big fan of late 80s early 90s japanese cars. I was looking for cars in my area and i came across a 1987 toyota corolla fx-16 gts. I realize this car doesnt fall into the classic japanese silhouette of the era, no pop up headlights not particularly sleek, nor does it have the immediate recognition of some other cars of the era. I think the 4AGE engine, and the near sleeper status of the car is what is attracting me to it. these cars arent super common, because i think they were less popular than their ae86 counterparts but my concern is finding replacement parts. My question is, should the part finding difficulty be a deterrent for me to make this my next project car? ive seen them anywhere from 3k to 7k and i would most likely be paying around 4k for one. Thank you in advance everyone!
A. Suspension B. Air filter intake C. Calipers D. Gaskets and Belts E. Alternator F. Exhausts (Muffler in it too) 8. Can I LED headlights mod it? 9. How should I go about modding it with best speakers? 10. Can a 6ft guy fit it even?
This will be my project car as it's kind of my dream car. Ik parts overall availability is low but I want to learn about cars on it and fix ot myself. Any suggestions for how I should go about it? I am a newcomer here.
Ik it has some rust issues on the sunroof and trunk. Anything else I should look out for.
I bought the car six years ago and the engine was already replaced before I bought it. It has between 110,000 and 120,000 miles. I drive this car HARD, I redline all the time with FFS, and I ride downshifts It's never had any other failures except the catalytic converter and clutch fork going out. I will stop back in once I start tearing into everything to pull the engine to hear any feedback. Definitely not an overnight adventure for me doing this.
Mod list. Professionally Tuned on a stock turbo.
Mountune intake, MBRP cat back, Wastegate actuator upgraded, Dual catch cans, Accessport, larger intercooler piping for hot and cold side, hi flow catalytic converter, ACT extreme heavy duty organic clutch kit, water methanol injection (not currently in use), mountune oil breather plate, COBB rear motor mount.
I’m sorry LS lovers, today is not the day… As the title says I’m looking for a some engine candidates to do for an engine swap, I’ll keep it simple, here’s the criteria:
I’ve had k24a2 on the radar in the top spot, I’m a pretty big Honda guy but what transmission to use are still unknown. I’ve also been Interested in the Volvo 2.4 I5 from the early 2000s, I’ve heard very good things about the engine, not too sure about compatibility tho.
Figured I would snoop around and see if anyone on here has any recommendations, experience or good resources to help with this.
PS: Car shell itself has not been chosen yet, but that’s a problem for another time 😂
Since I rent, I don't have a garage, driveway or friends with either. I really want to paint my car and have been considering making a plastic tent but I'm not sure if there's a better option. I can't rent a garage or paint booth because I'm working with a low budget. Any ideas?
Greetings from Florida, I am trying to get a title for an 83 Jeep Wagoneer I bought in Georgia. I did VIN searches online and it comes back completely clean, and the guy i bought it from got it from his neighbor who i think won it at an auction that the deceased people's family held. The car has only been registered twice, that much I can tell and I drove it around for a bit and its so nice to drive. Sadly, I have had no luck getting the title for it. Im thinking that HSMV 82040 could work but, I think I have to KNOW the previous owners well enough to write their names and dead dates down, or something... Maybe im reading the form wrong, it would be the easiest and cheapest way! I havent been able to find any information from the laminated plaque from the auction. Ive considered going through the court and doing a Declaratory Judgement where I, have to get a lot of forms filled out, have the sheriff search the VIN, pay what seems like a lot of fees but the title would be mine out right... a lot of work but, seems like a solid bet. Mechanics lien, maybe if i had a mechanic I trusted enough to help with that! Talked to my land lady to getting an abandoned vehicle title but Im not sure if that makes the title screwy after that. And lastly a bonded title, but in research Ive found my car is JUST outside the time frame in which it can be done, maybe Im wrong.
What I'm saying is I really need help getting this title (without it becoming a salvage title or something) so I need someone who has experience and advice to offer. I am more thankful than you know if you can help.
