Exterminator options for apartment?

I just got a puppy last weekend and I’m still training him to go to the bathroom outside. I have pee pads in 2 different spots in my apartment and every time he poops within minutes there’s a few cockroaches on ranging from tiny to small sized usually (baby and child sized maybe). I’ve heard this means that there’s likely a lot of them nearby. I’ve seen a few cockroaches since I’ve lived here, and I don’t think it helps that I’m on the first floor. But I absolutely HATE cockroaches.

I would like to hire an exterminator to come and do whatever they have to in order to get these pests out of my apartment ASAP. I’ve never hired an exterminator before so I was just wondering what my options are here? What methods do they use? How long does it take? And how long would I need to stay in a hotel while the fumes dissipate? Money is not an issue here, I can afford whatever the cost is and a hotel assuming it’s not more than a week or so. Is this a bad idea with a puppy?

If anyone has a recommendation or any experience with hiring an exterminator in an apartment building I’d love to get your recommendations and experiences while I decide what to do. I don’t plan on living here much longer and have been looking into houses the past few months, but i also don’t want to rush because of a pest problem and end up in a house I am not fully in love with.

Thanks fellow angelinos 🙏

How early to arrive LAX for domestic 8am flight on Saturday morning?

Going on vacation this weekend and my flight is at 8am with delta. We are checking in one luggage. How early should I get to the airport and how busy (or not busy) would it be early in the morning on a Saturday in May? Thanks

Car camping

I am new to camping and would like to camp near to home. I live in the San Gabriel Valley and would like recommendations on places to go camping. I have only camped at Joshua Tree, north of Lake Isabella and Channel Islands. I don't have experience anywhere else and would really like to find spots closer to home, weekend warrior style. Thanks in advance.

Also I like hiking, if anyone can recommend nice hikes in the area too that would be great. I have done plenty but want to hear from all of you.

did anyone else just lose power? or their power went low? (chinatown/echo park)

Our whole apartment’s electricity just went out, but not completely out. It’s like it’s in “low power” mode or something. I can hear other neighbors talking about it too. Anyone else? Anyone know what’s going on?

This seems crazy to me. Am I crazy?

This LA Times article profiles a 71 year old retiree who has lived in her 2 bed apartment since 1978. She pays very low rent. A developer wants to knock down her home (along with several others) and build a 152 unit 100% affordable housing building. As I understand it this woman would get $25k and the right to move into the new building when it is completed. She doesn’t want that. Says she could never match her current deal. Still, the fact that she gets to move into the new place negates that in my mind. It just seems crazy to me that a few people can hold up a project that would conceivably help so many, especially given how sorely LA needs the units. I feel for the woman, but are we really just supposed to wait until every retiree with a rent controlled unit dies before we can build anything?

City of Angels exhibit narrated by Charlton Heston

At least 40 years ago I saw an exhibit in Los Angeles with angel statuary that I think was narrated by Charlton Heston. I would love to see pictures or any info from anyone who remembers it.

Israel/Palestine Protests Megathread

Over the last few days we have seen an increase in posts related to the Israel/Palestine conflict and protests. The comment threads in these posts have quickly devolved into arguments on both sides of the issue and do not relate to the primary focus of this sub.

This is a LA-related subreddit, first and foremost, so we believe that local news is relevant and important. However, many comments in these threads have, time and again, proven to turn into rule breaking rhetoric and personal attacks. Ultimately, this is not the focus of this sub and the LA Mod Team cannot and will not police the debate.

Going forward, any posts related to the Israel/Palestine conflict and protests will be limited to be this megathread. Comments in this thread that are not related to LA will be removed to avoid any more uncivil comments, insults or heated debates on what’s going on in Israel/Palestine. As a reminder, we do not tolerate doxxing or with-hunts and will issue permanent bans to people who post links to social media or post personal information.

Unpopular Opinion: The Bowl does not suck.

Long-time Angeleno, first time Bowler. I read so many reviews how parking at this place is horrible but I must say, this is one of the better stadium experiences I’ve had. Arrived at the church at 4:00 and got the closest spot to the exit for $45, not stacked. Ride-shared to dinner and back and was dropped off at Lot C, just a few steps to the gate. There were escalators to the tip top section if needed, and we were offered seat cushions along the way. Bonus points for the waitress who gave me a free lychee martini with dinner.

The 4th St. Bridge is a death trap.

The middle lane of the 4th street bridge westbound from I-5 is sometimes restricted to only westward traffic. However, it is impossible to discern this if turning onto it from various side streets, causing one to reasonably assume that the middle lane between directions would function as a turn lane like any other 5-lane road. Instead, people pull into the lane with the intention of making an imminent left turn only to be met with direct oncoming traffic. How many collisions have occurred as a result of this unique and confusing configuration and what can be done about it?

Where do you recommend booking my hotel?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to LA for mid august and I'm planning on visiting a lot of places all around but I'm not sure where to book my hotel.

Right now it looks like Courtyard Mariott in Montery Park is the front runner and Hyatt at LAX because those 2 are the best value deals price wise for me. I'm renting a car so I'm hoping there's parking at decent rates near the hotel. I figure the drive distance will even out.

I'm planning to go to Disneyland, Universal, Santa Monica, and Griffith Observatory and maybe Huntington if I have it in me after to drive there. So I'm basically driving everywhere anyways. I figure no matter where I stay, some will be closer than others.

Any insight would be amazing.

Thanks in advance!

Chinese Theater Premier

I was lucky enough to score tickets to the Kingdom of The Planet Of The Apes world premiere tonight (5/2). It’s my first time attending a premiere at the Chinese theater and was curious about the seating. We’re picking up our tickets at the guest entrance so I’m not sure if it’s assigned or first come first serve, can anyone provide insight?

Due to proposed budget cuts in L.A., Griffith Observatory is in danger. You can help.

Hi everyone, your friendly local and imported astronomer here. I wanted to share with you all some of the struggles we may soon be facing due to the upcoming budget cuts and a request for your help.

First, I can’t tell you how much the Observatory means to all of us working there and how many sacrifices we have all made to keep things running. You might think of L.A. as a purely entertainment city but with Griffith Observatory, Caltech, JPL, a huge chunk of the aerospace industry here and numerous Nobel-winning astronomy and physics department here we are one of the most important places for science and astronomy around the globe. I moved from France to L.A. seven years ago for that very reason. The work we do in science communication is extremely underfunded and I hope you’ll agree, very important.

There are also very few places around the world that provide a place where anyone from the public can look through a telescope for free on any clear night. I have lived in four major capitals and L.A. is the only one of those where this is accessible.

Here’s a message our Foundation sent out to our supporters and how you can help. Thank you so much.

Dear Friend,

Last week, Mayor Karen Bass released her proposed City of Los Angeles budget for the coming year (which starts July 1). While the proposal includes funds to support and retain essential City workers, it also makes significant cuts to ensure a balanced budget for the City in the face of a very large projected deficit. Unfortunately, those cuts fall most heavily on the Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP), which owns and operates Griffith Observatory.

Griffith Observatory is not safe from City budget cuts.

During the Great Recession of 2008, the Observatory lost nearly one-third of its full-time staff positions to cuts, and these positions were never recovered. Another reduction could damage Observatory operations and programs including cuts to beloved, long-standing initiatives like our School Programs.

Make your voice heard!

Recreation and Parks services are essential to the health and well-being of our communities. We encourage you to reach out to the Budget, Finance and Innovation Committee members TODAY and urge them to support recreation and park services and Griffith Observatory.

What You Can Do

Call Budget, Finance and Innovation Committee members TODAY and tomorrow, Friday, May 3, 2024. Let them know:

  1. Why you support Griffith Observatory and city parks
  2. What these public resources provide for all Angelenos and visitors
  3. Urge them to protect RAP from budget cuts

Budget, Finance and Innovation Committee

Councilmember Blumenfield: 610-616-2713 Councilmember Rodriguez: 213-473-7007 Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky: 213-473-7005 Councilmember Tim McOsker: 213 473-7015 Councilmember Price: 213-473-7009

RAP goes before the City Council's Budget, Finance and Innovation Committee TODAY May 2, 2024. The Foundation's mission is to support and promote Griffith Observatory as a home for science literacy, education, and public astronomy through resource development and advocacy in partnership with the community. Today is the day for advocacy.

Thank you for your support of Griffith Observatory and recreation and parks activities throughout the city.

Cosmically yours,

Griffith Observatory Foundation

Water Heater Replacement Pricing LA

Posting here as I’m in LA and my exterior closet 16 y/o gas water heater burner just died. Out of nowhere. Plumbing company came by and said to get it up to code with expansion tank, pulling off wall, and having pressure relief valve routed outside would be $3600 with a 6/1 warranty for a new 40gal gas tank heater. How’s this sound for current prices?

I know I could install one myself since gas line and water lines are already in the closet, but wondering if this is even worth it.

Thanks!

LA County Fire Station 164

Fire broke out at LA County Station 164 on May 1. Nine fire fighters, asleep on the job were rescued by a passerby banging on the doors to wake them up and alert them about the flames. At least two engines were burned.

Bruh what? Didn’t they have smoke alarms? How did the fire start in the first place? Why are cops able to provide 24/7 coverage without being paid to sleep on the job while fire fighters haven’t figured out how to do that? So many many questions…
