THE FLAME BY THE PALM TREES
I was idle. Nothing moved. Not forward, not backward. Not sideways. Not up. Not down.
My organs weren't pumping or filtering. I was in a place I could not be found. Stuck in a crevice only heroes dared to look in.
One day, she saw me. She was skinny. Bony. With no mass of any type. She only looked strong enough to carry a few pounds of air. The mosquitoes were sucking on her. But she reached in for me. And with ease, pulled me out. She placed me in front of the fire and told me, "Do something with this."

BLOWN OPPORTUNITY "It happened late at night after my shift as a machinist for Duchess Aircraft. It was '97 or early '98. I was waiting for the bus to go home at my usual stop up in Crenshaw. I just remember looking out for the bus and a car passing by. The next thing I knew, I woke up in General Hospital. I was in a coma for four months. The doctor told me that I was shot in the head at point-blank range with a shotgun. He said that I was a surviving miracle. He told me that the only reason I survived was the fact that I was shot at point-blank range, otherwise, my head would've been rolling down the street. Ever since that incident, I lost contact with most of society. I lost contact with my parents and my four brothers and sisters. I had a good job with great benefits. It wasn't Boeing or anything, but Duchess treated me well; it was a solid job. The doors closed on me after that. I lost fifty percent of my hearing and I can't smell or breathe through my nose. I do that through my mouth. I can't read because although I have my left eye, it's a blurry vision. I see shadows. I've been out Downtown for over twenty years. But my survival skills have kept me alive. I know my way around very well. A lot of people know me and I was recently told that someone has been looking for me. It might be one of my brothers. I would like to see them again. But honestly, I'm alright. I don't know what that other life would have turned out like. I don't look back, I can't. I have a good reason to be down. But why should I? I don't feel sorry for myself and I don't expect anyone to feel for me. They never found the person who shot me but I forgive him. That's all there's to me. I just survive. It's all a dream." *Jerry Nave grew up in Watts and Pomona. He graduated from Ganesha High in '81. He played varsity basketball for three years. He was recently in the hospital for six days. He had walking pneumonia and was diagnosed with some sort of lung disease. He says he is happy. Jerry has a gentle soul and is positive about life. He panhandles downtown for change. #angelenoheart#lastory#lastories
Hi all!
I saw this post recently re: a Photo Critique Group and was wondering if this is something people would be interested in getting started. Unlike photo walk groups (e.g. Beer & Cameras LA), this group doesn't focus on taking photos together but rather giving tips, feedback, and friendly critiques. More importantly, this group serves as another group to socialize with like minding individuals to talk photography.
To get a pulse check on if this something of interest and something we can get up and running, I created the below form. Complete it if you're interested!
Hello! Anyone recommend any places to take pictures where’s there’s a lot of people bedsides Hollywood blvd.
Or even events coming up?
I'm wondering if anyone knows of photo critique groups around LA? I know of Beers & Cameras LA, but wondering if there's a group that meets regularly to critique/give feedback for ongoing projects rather than just take street photos together. Thanks!
My partner and I are getting married in a simple yet big event in East La. We are looking for a photographer who captures moments, candid, portraits of loved ones… nothing cheesy. I also love the look of film. We are tight on budget. Any suggestions?
I don't see rules for this sub so let me know if this is against them.
I'm an up and coming NYC based photographer and I'll be in LA visiting friends around thanksgiving. I was wondering if anyone here knew of any events/meetups happening around then or general photography must sees.
I'd also be interested in meeting up with any models looking to build out their portfolios for a portrait shoot. It doesn't seem like I can add images to a text post so I'll just link to my website:
