Anybody got scoop on a safe winter parking spot near Freeman Creek grove? Planning a winter trip and curious where is best... Happy to hoof it a few miles to the TH too
Hi everyone!
We are a group of UC San Diego students who are working on a project to develop a new novel way to connect hikers. For our class project, we need to interview hikers (and/or birdwatchers) to see what they think of our idea. It would be a chill interview over zoom where we get your feedback. If you'd be interested or have any questions please fill out our survey https://forms.gle/pvWW4p3noWG9nqn77 . Thanks!
I just did an overnight camp in Caspers Wilderness Park and was so bummed to hear the road noise from Ortega Highway all night long. It drowned out all the awesome nature sounds. Any recs for a campground in SoCal that offers a quiet, peaceful wilderness experience without the noise of civilization?
Hi all, looking for a challenging hike (5-9 hours, out and back) for a small group in January of next year within an hour of San Diego. This hike would serve as a test run of the group who plan to climb Mt Rainier later in the year. Understanding conditions are different than Rainier, this hike serves to assess the groups personalities under some pressure, conditioning, mental endurance, team skills, and to have fun. If Rainier is rated as a 10 on a scale of 1-10, the hike we’re looking for would fall in the range of 6-8. Thank you for any recommendations!
Search efforts for the missing hiker in the Chantry Flat area are continuing. Ground teams, dogs and drones are all being used in the search.
Searches involve continuous investigation and refining what we know and don’t know about our missing person and their plans.
Thanks to insight gleaned from hikers and bikers that reached out we’ve been able to refine when Mr. Neutzel was in the Chantry area.
If you were in the area between 10/14 and 10/16, please check to see if you have any photos or other info that could add to what we know.
How small can a hole in the rocks be and still be considered a cave? These caves, such as they are, can be found in Chumash Park in eastern Simi Valley.
Also, sorry for the somewhat excessive panning. I am still learning how to move when holding a GoPro.
Red Rock Trail
I'm looking for a good car camping spot to go with some friends in November.
In the past I've had a lot of success with camping in Anza Borrego and Joshua Tree in the winter, but I'm looking for somewhere new.
Does anyone have more recommendations for a spot that's not too cold to camp this time of year?
Lost my Sony Rx100 M7 this past weekend (Oct 27th) out in Owens Valley. Not sure where else to post, but it fell out of my truck either on Antelope Springs Road (east of 395) or in Lee Vining (Mobil Gas Station, or local liquor store).
This was probably the last photo on it (took the same photo on my phone), but there's many of my kiddos, bicycles, etc.
Any info helps, I just want my memory card.
Hey, I’m hiking Mount Whitney next Monday on the third is there anything else that I need to know or have besides food water and a lot of layers cause it’s gonna be cold? I am in fairly decent shape. I am a marathon and plan on doing it as a day hike my only concern is the wind And cold any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
If anyone was hiking on the Chantry area from 10/11 up through last weekend and you saw the individual in the attached picture, please contact the LASD at Temple Station (626-285-7171). The missing hiker was likely alone, wearing jeans and carrying a day pack.
I've got some time off next month and I'd like to do something fun. Not looking to do anything too winter-y so I'm limited to the coast/desert.
Backbone trail seems pretty cool but camping seems logistically tough in some areas and it seems pretty standard in terms of cool terrain (living in LA I'm just used to dayhikes in that area).
I was also looking at Big Sur, chaining together a big loop starting from the east and heading closer to the ocean.
Is there anywhere else I should be looking? San Gabriels have a lot of closures. Maybe something cool in the Sespe Wilderness? I'm curious to hear what you guys would go for. I'm willing to drive 5-6 hours from LA, and there will be 2 of us so point-point routes are an option.
Thanks!
I’m considering doing Mt. Langley in a single day in 2 weeks but am unsure if the weather and trail conditions will be optimal. Does anyone have a recent experience?
For context I did Mt. Whitney in 2017 in a single day. I can’t get any more time off due to school and work commitments so it basically has to be done over the weekend of November 8-9th.
Weather looks…cold, expectedly. But how much am I going to suffer on the way up? Is it worth it still so late in the year? There hasn’t been a winter storm yet so I feel like it should be better beautiful still.
Any advice or perspective is appreciated
The Naked Menace strikes again😃😃
Anyone interested in a summit to Mt. Whitney in spring or summer 2025? I hear the permits are a lottery system in April? so the actual date depends on if we can secure permits. Would be my first time doing this. I’m seeking anyone who wants to team up for this 22 mile hike. This is a challenging Bucket List item I plan to check off!
Just another beautiful day here at Griffith Park. Great I look forward to the cooling weather. Great views of the LA basin from here.
Feel the need to climb some rocks, not bouldering a steep wall or anything. But climbing up some rocky hills or a mound of boulders. Don't know if this is possible here but it's worth a shot asking. I live in Long Beach btw.
