This is a place for fellow hikers and backpackers in Southern California to organize meet ups, post gear reviews, trip reviews, and etc. Hopefully this will unite local hikers and allow us to meet and explore the beautiful landscape we inhabit.

Need hiking tips in LA

Hey everyone!

My partner and I are on the hunt for some sweet hiking spots around Los Angeles. We don't have wheels, so we're looking to hop on the bus to get to some nearby trails. If anyone's got any rad recommendations for bus-accessible trails, we'd be stoked to hear 'em!

Also, we've got a buddy with a car who might be down to chauffeur us to trails a bit further out, like within about an hour's drive or so. If anyone knows of any dope trails further out that are worth the trek, even if we need a lift, we're all ears!

Backpacking recommendations

Any recommendations on a 4 day backpacking trip 3-4 hours away from San Diego? Planning to go in mid may. Would do eastern sierras but there might be too much snow.

So exited to climb Mt Baldy!

I just got my first pair of hiking boots and have completed my training for mount Baldy (the stair master at my local gym 2-3 a week). I’ve been very patient waiting for a good time to go, and my friends said not to go in the winter so I’ve waited untill spring so there’s no snow. I’m so glad my wait has paid off. I’m setting out at 3 in the afternoon this Sunday, so I can hopefully get down by sunset. If you have any tips feel free to let me know. Can’t wait to be part of the exclusive Mt Baldy club! 🙌

Weather for Mt. Whitney mid-August?

Was planning to overnight hike Mt. Whitney in August, around mid-August, and was wondering if anyone had experience hiking during that time and what the weather might be like? Specifically the temperature--online has a range of temps. Thanks!

San Jacinto hikeability atm?

Hi all! Thanks for all of your help and advice on my last posts and questions.

I did end up going up Mt. Baldy even though some of you cautioned me against it... It was wonderful! A few closer calls but caution and knowing my limits paid off (plus the main trail was fairly packed down, except for the switchbacks after crossing the bowl)

I wanted to aim for San Jacinto tomorrow. Looking back at trail reports on this subreddit, I can't find any recent mentions of san Jacinto after that storm 2 weeks ago.

Could anyone share their experience of it? Their gear (ice axe crampons spikes etc), and how it went?

Thank you all!! Especially you HJ, you're awesome :)

Non-Backpacking Hiking Trip Recommendations

Hey guys, so long story short I got laid off in December and have capitalized on that by hiking almost every week around the San Gabriel mountains. Unfortunately I must return to participating in capitalist society again, and I start on the 22nd. For a while now I have wanted to go on some type of trip and just hike for a few days before I start a new job.

Ideally I want to get a cheap AirBNB or hotel, then wake up and hike the whole day. My original idea was Yosemite but I think by next week it will just be too crowded/expensive since off-season is coming to a close. Sequoia is also a possibility, though it seems like some of the more intense hikes around there like Watchtower are still closed for winter conditions. Walking around in the snowy Sequoia groves does seem pretty cool though, and I can probably just combine a few of the longer routes for a good day of hiking.

Does not necessarily have to be a National Park. I would prefer mountains/Sierra Nevadas and have gear to deal with snow but I am not looking for extreme mountaineering either. I like doing 3-4k ft elevation gain hikes, so something like that.

Meysan Lake to Mt. Whitney - Question

Hello,

I won a permit to hike from Meysan Lake exiting Mt. Whitney. So as long as I start at Meysan Lake I can summit Whitney. Has anyone done this hike before? Meysan Lake looks like it is very close to the Mt. Whitney portal and the Whitney Trailhead. Are there any issues with starting here you are aware of? Permit is for early August. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sabrina Basin Day Hikes

(picture for attention)

Hi there! I'm trying to find a good day hike for a group of 8 or 9 in the Sabrina Basin (I know it's not exactly SoCal, but there's always some great advice in this sub). I'm thinking something around 7-12 miles total. There's so many different lakes in the area, so I was wondering if anyone had a strong preference for any of them for any reason. TIA!

Planning a trip. Looking for campground recs.

Hey all! I’m planning a trip and am looking for some recommendations. A couple friends are coming and I wanted to stay at a designated campground the night before the hike.

The only requirements are that it’s close to the trailhead (icehouse canyon most likely), has a fire pit, and vehicle access.

Bonus points if it has any kind of water: stream, creek, etc.

Thanks for any ideas you can provide. 🙂

Season's windin-down, n we gotta makit count...

4cast is lookin ali'l "iffy" for Sat, but better on Sun.

At this point, I'm waverin betwixt hittin 1'a tha 3 cyns, abit W of Temecula, or'a desert location. (Possibly Guadalupe?)

All options'r gonna hurt, in their own way, but'a TEAM can do more'n an "army of 2".

LMK if this sounds like your jam...

Ascending Mount Langley: Reflections from the High Sierra - Part Five

Foxtail Pine, Cottonwood Lakes Trail

Took this photo while descending from a day of hiking up to the summit of Mt. Langley. Below is a excerpt of part five on a series currently being worked on.

The trail changed as I descended. Rockslides had been cleared, and people had taken shortcuts. The way along the canyon face didn’t seem as stable as it had earlier in the morning when I climbed up. Now High and Long Lake looked like big rain puddles in the sunlight. Though it was a bit past three in the afternoon, it felt directly overhead, casting minimal shadows. I kept looking towards the boulder where my tent was, wondering if marmots had entered or nibbled a hole into the backpack.

Around that time a group of three or four were ascending the pass. We greeted each other and continued on our way. After about an hour the trail began to even out slightly. New Army Pass now seemed like a canyon of hightowers. More and more patches of green mossy grass came into view the lower the elevation it got. My steps going down were slow, but my body felt light. I scanned the trail below when suddenly my eyes saw wildflowers moving with delicate excitement as the breeze blew. Things were looking good. After reaching the foothill, I searched for my tent.

Trans- Catalina- 3 days- ferries in November?

Do you guys think that ferries will be reliably running between Two Harbors/San Pedro on Monday Nov 11th (this is Veteran's Day), or Avalon/San Pedro Friday 11/8? Open to reversing the below itinerary if need be. Ferry schedules still aren't posted for November but if anyone has had experience in past years I would love to hear your thoughts!

Here is my proposed itinerary:

Day 1 (Friday 11/8)

  • Ferry to Avalon from San Pedro
  • Camp at Hermit Gulch Campground

Day 2 (Saturday 11/9)

  • Hike from Avalon to Black Jack Campground - 11 miles
  • Camp at Black Jack Campground

Day 3 (Sunday 11/10)

  • Hike from Black Jack Campground to Two Harbors - 13 miles
  • Camp at Two Harbors

Day 4 (Monday 11/11)

  • Ferry from Two Harbors back to San Pedro

Thanks in advance!!!

Hikes with Elevation Gain

Hi all!

I’m looking to summit a few big mountains in the summer (Mt. Whitney, Pico de Orizaba, Mt. Baker) and looking to train for those.

I’ve already done Mt. Baldy and Mt. Wilson, and can generally handle up to 5k elevation and 25 miles a day. I’m looking for both short hikes with an elevation gain of around 1k elevation that I can do in the morning before work as well as longer hikes with an elevation gain 4k+ for the weekends. Any recommendations? Location for weekday hikes preferably in south OC area but weekend hikes can be as far as 2 hours away from OC.

Thanks in advance!

Mount San Gorgonio single overnight camps

I'm trying to choose a camp for a single overnight to summit San Gorgonio. I'm hiking the South Fork trail on the north side of the peak, and looping into Dry Lake Trail on the descent. It looks like Dollar Lake camp and Dry Lake View camps are the last options before the trail to the summit. Since it will be in July, any advice on best potential water sources would be helpful. Thanks!

Best overnight backpacking trip for an inexperienced backpacker +dog?

Hi hi,

My partner has never been backpacking, and I hurt my knee a few years back on a strenuous trip. That said, the knee is feeling much better, and she's open to giving backpacking a go, so I'd love to find a relatively easy overnight trip near(ish) to Los Angeles this Spring (May) to get our feet wet together and maybe even bring our dog.

Off the top of my head, something that takes us 4-7 miles into the back country would be ideal. Would love some watering holes/lakes to dip into, and even better if the park allows campfires at night.

I'm open to driving 3-4 hours even into the Sierras if that's our best option, but even better if we can find something local(ish).

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom!!!

What’s your limit?

Recently I did Condor Peak via Trail Canyon. All Trails says it’s 16 miles. This has been my longest hike and honestly wasn’t super enjoyable because it was a tad too long.

Maybe it’s because I need to condition more (although I’d say I have pretty good stamina), but as of now, I think anywhere from 6-12 miles is my sweet spot for an enjoyable day hike.

That leads me to ask: What’s your sweet spot for an enjoyable day hike?

Backbone Trail Saddle Peak Parking

Hey I am new to the area and wanting to do the Saddle Peak section of the backbone from Piuma Canyon.

I see from google maps and some trail reports that there are turnouts on Piuma Canyon road and people sometimes park there.

Will I get hassled if I park there? Or should I just park at Robert Corrales?

Thanks
