Tips to find housing (and not get scammed)

I know alot of people are looking for housing. This may be because you are wanting to cut your housing costs from your current place, your lease is ending, you need to get away from bad roommates, you broke up with so n so, or you are new to CSUDH & want to get a place closer to campus. It may even be a combination of these things. Either way, I have some tips to help you.

Some tips & things to remember when searching for a place to live online:

  1. If the seller is rushing you and does not appear to be doing anything to vet you, it may be a scam.
  2. If they insist you tour the room alone or are uncomfortable with you bringing someone with you to check out the rental? It's a scam.
  3. When you tour the room/apartment, make sure all the light switches and outlets work. You can check the outlets by plugging in your phone charger., Its a small thing, but you don't want to move into a place where some/all the outlets do not work.
  4. When touring a place, turn off the lights and close the curtains. Open the camera app on your phone & scan the room/apartment. If you see any bright white lights, it may be a hidden camera. You can also use the flashlight. look inside vents, and smoke detectors. If it looks odd or the light shines in an odd fashion, there may be a hidden camera.
  5. Check ratings or get a referral from a reputable place. If a friend, family member or the school refers you to a person/place, it is probably a legit place to get housing. If you are referred by some random person on the internet, it may be fake.
  6. If you are subletting a room, ask to see the lease to verify that the person you are renting from is on the lease. There's been plenty of stories of people who rented a place moved in & were later evicted by the actual owner or renter of the place.
  7. Make sure you get a copy of the signed contract. Take pictures of it on your phone as well after signing it with the landlord. Feel free to make a video of it as well. Make sure to ask during the video if you have permission to record the Landlord & make sure to state their name (First & Last) in the video. (If you have any issues after & no contract, you can be evicted).
  8. Video and/or take pictures of your move in & move out. This helps to ensure that you are not charged at move out for returning the place in a different condition then it was at move in.
  9. If the homeowner or landlord never meets you, it may be fake. Why would they avoid meeting you? They don't own the rental place!!
  10. Trust your instinct. if it's too good to be true, it probably is fake. If it don't feel right, walk away.
  11. Get some roommates. Meet them and find out what their lifestyle is like. If their lifestyle is too different from yours, then you may not get along with them. For example, if you are thr type that studies weekdays and parties weekends, look for roommates like that. On the otherhand if that was your lifestyle and the other roommates are quiet and study all the time, it wont work. Y'all wont mesh well.
  12. Renting rooms from a family can be good. They like quiet at night and are gone in the day. This can be ideal for us as students to work, study and sleep respectively.

People will frequently use your ignorance and urgency to try to scam you with various things, especially when it comes to housing. I have found many places over the last decade on Facebook & Craigslist. (I have also bought 6 cars in the last 10 years off of both of those websites successfully). There are scammers out there but take your time. Look at ads to spot red flags. Don't let your urgency blind you to a bad deal.

Do not wait until the last minute to check for housing. search the ads now. Over time, you will learn how to spot the red flags and scams. From my experience, the cheaper the potential rental may be, the higher the likelihood of you getting scammed Is it possible to find a (for example) $500 room for rent in the area? Yes. Is it easy to do so? Of course not!! But those cheap rooms/apartments are out there & can be found if you are patient.

If you are using a proper site such as apartments.com or realtor.com, etc, it is probably all good since these are legit websites that screen the listers. do your due diligence. Remember when we were all told as kids "Look before you leap?'" This is exactly why. Do your research before you sign on that dotted line.

If you have any additional advice, feel free to list it below.

Take care Toros!!

Off-campus housing for CSUDH

Hey! I was trying to find off-campus housing @ CSUDH and I realized that the process is not too ideal. It was super stressful and almost got scammed on the facebook group chat. I found a website that CSULB students had and I was thinking of creating one similar but for CSUDH - https://www.instagram.com/csulbuniverse_housing/

If I were to create it would you all use it? It would have a roommate finder, housing and a marketplace. Let me know :) Happy Halloween

Winter classes - What's your experience been?

I am enrolled in a 1 unit class for Winter session (BUS 302) so I don't anticipate that to be too tough compared to a regular semester which is about 1 month long. I am thinking of taking a 3-unit class. My question is, how is the workload? Will I be stuck doing work daily or will I still have time to enjoy the holidays? due to a 3-unit class? What are some good classes to take in WInter that are do-able in 4 weeks? Which classes would you avoid in a short winter term? Thanks for any insight. =)

Paying for Winter Session

According to the page listed at the bottom of this post, one needs to submit a Winter Session Deferment Form in order to have their Winter fees deducted from their Spring financial aid allotment. I know it takes 3-4 business days (per the Financial AId department) to process the form. My question is once it is processed, will they email me or would they place a note on my.csudh.edu somewhere notifying me of the form being processed? I'm new to DH & don't know how this all works. TIA for your help!!

Well, this is awkward

Alright, I don’t even live in California, much less have gone to CSUDH or know anyone who has gone to Dominguez Hill.

I’m just posting this here since it seems kind of odd. This was in a YouTube video I watched involving a fictional person “Tom,” choosing to major in business. The creator Whatifalthist singled out your university in particular as a “crappy college in the area.” That was around the 25 minute mark

https://youtu.be/MLl2D5VRL0o?si=cJRxa6DNT7RjuSwE

If I may ask, what did any of y’all do to deserve that title? It sounds needlessly inflammatory since it looks like there are over 20 other state schools in CA

Any English majors in here?

I'm heavily debating switching my major to English butttttttttt... I don't know. I'm currently a psych major and a lot of these profs suck booty-- I've done all my GE's so I'm wondering what it's like for you guys? Are most of your professors good or is it a mix? I've had only good profs with the few English classes I've taken out of my free will so I'm basing my current opinion on that.

MAKING FRIENDS - SO many ppl eat/walk alone

I'm a transfer Student and this is my first semester and I'm trying to make some friends and I know a lot of people struggle with it as well but I always noticed that a lot of people eat alone in the cafeteria and sometimes i just wished i could just ask if i could eat with them but i know that can be weird, specially as a guy, but i just feel that this could be an easy to make friends. anyway, quick thought i wanted to share.
