hi all redditors of LA, seeking some advice about neighborhoods for an upcoming move.
TLDR: Looking for eastside and westside recommendations of walkable neighborhoods for a couple with a dog in their late 20's.
I (29/F) and my boyfriend (29/M) are moving to LA next year, and we're starting to think about neighborhoods that we would want to check out since we have a few trips coming up to scope some areas out and would love some insight. I've read tons of posts on here, but it's definitely overwhelming so was hoping I could ask the experts.
work: I work remotely, but my partner will most likely be commuting every day - nothing is set in stone yet, but he'll likely be in central, DTLA, or century city based on his industry. We'll cross the bridge of narrowing down neighborhoods once we have a better idea of his commute.
neighborhood wants: We'll be getting 1 car between both of us, but since i work remote and he'll be in office most days, its really really important that we're in a walkable area. Ideally, we would be within walking distance to some sort of "main street"/area where we can grab coffee, dinner, drinks, shop, etc. My absolute dream would be to live close to a farmers market since I am very into cooking.
lifestyle: we're a mix between homebodies and social. I love going out for dinner + drinks, and trying new restaurants. We also like going out with friends, but keep it pretty casual. He likes having access to outdoor space for hiking or sports. We have a dog, so also being in a walkable area with parks, or having access to trails on the weekend is ideal.
Additional context: I've only lived on the east coast in walkable cities [currently NYC, previously Philly], and I haven't had a car in many years, so this will be a huge change. I gravitate towards more residential-y areas that still have a bit of an artsy/eclectic feel to them. My boyfriend was born and raised in LA but hasn't lived there as an adult, so while this is definitely a homecoming for him (and likely a more permanent move for us), there are still some neighborhoods that he/we haven't explored.
We have a few friends in LA right now in BH and Venice, and his family is in Pasadena. From what I've seen, I like the vibe of the east side like the Los Feliz, silverlake, echo park area, but I'm afraid it could be too isolating considering where our friends live, but my concern with being close to the beach is being far from his family. We have a decent budget - probably up to $4500 [max] for ideally a 2 bed, maybe with a little outdoor space. It's clear that this unicorn apartment I've made up in my head probably doesn't exist because something has to give, so i would love everyone's perspective! Thank you!!!
edit: added a TLDR
Hey All! I’d love you guys input on an idea I have. I want to move to Los Angeles, but I’m not sure exactly where I’d like to stay yet. Do you think it would be smart to just sell all of my things and move to an Airbnb in LA for about 2 1/2 months until I figure out what I want to do? I have $15,000 saved up, and I’m 26. haven’t started school yet, but I plan to whenever I move to LA, Another dilemma I do not have a car.:/… please give me your thoughts
Hey everyone, I just released a online property, car, and vehicle inspecting Chrome extension that makes it super easy to send one of of our trusted inspectors to visit any online listing!
Instead of you moving to an apartment sight unseen, or traveling long distances to see if you even want to buy a car or see if a desk will fit your room. Just click on the little extension logo and we will send some one to take photos, videos, write a report, bring a tape measurer! For property we even show the entire neighborhood and street parking!
Being able to send someone to inspect any online listing saves you time and money, my favorite examples is sending someone to see if the the neighborhood of an apartment you like is safe at night but you dont want to waste your weekend driving around town and night
Dibby handles making an appointment with the online seller and can ask them any questions you want us to ask. It doesn't require signing up for an account so you can try it out with minimal effort. Plus its reasonably priced at only $30 dollars per visit of apartment and cars and only $20 for furniture
This is my first chrome extension and I feel like I have a lot to learn but I want to show people what I've built and I'm really proud of how this one turned out:)
Enjoy, and I'd love to hear what you think!

Hey all! My friend and I are planning a move from Boston to LA at the end of next August. Has anyone here had experience securing an apartment from across the country without seeing it in person? We're curious about the best time to start looking and signing. We'll be visiting in January to check out areas, with a focus on Pasadena, as we’re hoping for a suburban vibe and loved it when we stayed there last May. Thanks for any advice!
I’m planning to move here as an early 20s female with no car. I want to know the safety and walkability to grocery stores!
Planning to move here close to my job and there’s Ralphs nearby. I would like to know more insights around Oxford Ave and Imperial Highway?
Hi,
I’m 27M and looking for a room or studio to rent in the Valley, preferably near CSUN or with CSUN students. I’m currently located near Balboa and Devonshire and am interested in finding a place as soon as possible within the area.
I’ve held many jobs, I’m a team player, I’m ambitious and working towards a career, I’m a working man, just looking for a peaceful environment! Not looking to start any issues
If you are looking for a candidate, I have inquiries about the following:
1. What is included in the monthly rent? (e.g., utilities, parking, internet)
3. Is the unit furnished or unfurnished?
4. is there a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry machines available for use?
I look forward to hearing from anyone!
My new work will be in Encino LA. I currently reside in Gardena, but I am planning to move near Encino, even though it is hybrid work, I want to find a place within 15-20 miles from Encino.
I am not looking at the North Side tbh, my relatives live in Northridge and the amount of heat and how hot it is... just notorious.
Here in Gardena I can live the whole year without air conditioner. This may not be the case near Encino but I want to live somewhere that is not TOO hot and somewhere I don't have to blast my AC all day.
What are some good neighborhoods near Encino that is not too hot and not too expensive?
Currently looking at places like Culver City, Brentwood, Tarzana, Lake Balboa, etc.
Anything helps!
As the title says, I’m moving to L.A. in the spring from Minneapolis for acting and to get away from winter. What areas would you recommend for a 36 yo male in a power chair?
Is it loud? Considered safe? How's the walkability?
I inherited a house near 5th and San Pedro. Wondering if this is a safe area and if there are any decent jobs within a 10 minute (or so) walk.
Hi everyone would really appreciate insight on what to expect living in this area!
I’m 31F, no kids or pets. I work remote and have limited friends in the city because I’m new here. So I was hoping to live in a neighborhood where I’ll be able to get out often not have to drive everywhere and make friends
I found a really great apartment and when I went to check it out and checked all the boxes.
However, that was my first and only time in that area so I wouldn’t really know what to expect moving there
I’ve always Wondered to Anyone that Live in the Area that I Circled in Black do Yall ever get annoyed because you life so close to one of the Busiest / Biggest stadiums in Cali / LA I would assume it has its perks in Some cases but Normally you’d hate to have to wake up to whatever event is going on that night?
We are looking at a place located near the pin, off of Los Feliz Blvd. Curious on people’s thoughts of this location?
My wife and I really like the vibe of Los Feliz. We decided it’s our goal to find a 2br place there. Found the place referenced but had some questions about the location. We’d love to have something very walkable, especially every now and then to a coffee shop or restaurant. We are fine with walking about 20 min but is this a bit too far to get to Hillhurst/Vermont? Also unsure about the traffic of Los Feliz Blvd with everyone getting onto the 5, would it be terrible?
We have a dog so thought it might be a good location at least to be able to walk the dog to the nearby park, around the neighborhood and up into Griffith park.
Would love to know if anyone has any thoughts on this area.
Hi, recently I contacted a real estate agent on a listing of his to see if there were any one bedrooms coming up for rent in this particular building (the listing was for a two bedroom)
Another one of his agents reached out to me a few days later, and has been looking for one bedrooms around the same area on my behalf, asking listing agents if they would come down to my price, etc.
How does this real estate agent benefit from this? Will I have to pay him something? Is it just an attempt to drum up business? Thanks in advance.

I am straight out of high school and I want to move to la to be a producer, I already have a remote job with a us company working as a contractor, and I make pretty good money and I want to first get to Santa Monica college since its pretty cheap as a college overall.

Hello!
I'm a 27 years old, currently working in Houston, Texas. I'm originally from Canada, I got my degree here in Houston a few years ago, been working a really nice job ever since, (got really lucky I suppose), I am also doing my PhD on the side at the moment, and I honestly don't really like Texas. I want a better place to move to in the next few years or so. I know someone will ask, but money really isn't and won't be a problem for me, even in a city like Los Angeles. I also have been to Los Angeles before, and I do plan on visiting again, this time a bit longer, in the near future, among other cities.
I just have a few questions!
Everything else related to moving I have been researching in my own time! Los Angeles is just one of those cities that checks a lot of boxes for me (mountains close by, culturally diverse, lots of things to do, good food, decent weather). It isn't the only city / state I am looking into, mind you, but it is one of them!
Cheers!
Looking for some insight and advice from those who have moved their dogs from Hawai’i to the mainland, specifically California. Any recommendations on companies or should I just book and coordinate everything on my own? I’ve read mixed reviews about IPM which I initially thought I’d use their service for this move but kinda second guessing it now!
Besides a healthy dog and a health certificate and apparently a rabies vaccination for him what else is needed for entry into California?
Koa is a three year old 90lbs Golden Retriever. All help is appreciated!!
I dont plan on applying to the apartment yet, but they want a credit check before i even view the property. Is this normal or a scam? I dont want to spend $30+ if I dont even know the space yet or if I am even going to apply.
Long story short, the company I’ve work for for multiple years plus is based out of here in California. The branch / region I worked for back home in Texas is closing down and I made the decision to volunteer, travel and hit the road with my company wherever they need help at throughout the states in the country.
Now they recently just moved me here in California working in one of the outter towns from Los Angeles, the dream place I’ve always wanted to live in since I was younger . I’ve visited here before was real cool but as I’m aware, 2 completely different things from visiting or vacationing somewhere to actually living there.
Then back home before everything went south back at my home shop, we always had so many Californians always moving and relocating back home in Texas. They’re all really cool and nice people but I always just seemed so confused to why they left where they’re from to come here where I’m from out of all places lol and all alot of them would do is trash talk the state they’re from at how expensive it is, the laws are dumb and so on and so forth . I’ve always looked at them puzzled at how they could have so much hate to where they’re from, to the place I’ve always dreamed of living and just guessed it just wasn’t for them idk .
&Now here I am in their shoes away from my home state in their stomping grounds, the place I’ve always dreamed of living waiting to see if all the “horror stories” I’ve heard are true or not . Made alot of friends already here at work already, they all think it’s cool that I’m from Texas and all but to my surprise alot of the friends I’ve made that live here and that are from Los Angeles too since that’s the closest shop to where we’re working at say most of the samething also that the other Californians where saying and telling me back home. The only difference I see is the way they tell me what they say it sounds more like a dream or goal of them leaving and getting out of California moving to Texas compared to the other guys that were already gone and already moved over there too. That plus the guys here take way more pride and dignity in there home state and city which is more of what I’d expect compared to what those other guys would tell me. Just find it really shocking now that I’m here, the guys I’m working with that are natives here and still live here too that I have so much in common with plus we literally do the same thing for a living also so you’d think these are the best guys to get advice about living here are telling me the samethings I’ve heard before .
I’m just a phone call away from my company taking me off the traveling department and making me a permanent employee here in the state and city, just idk if I should or not now that I’m actually here . I’ve drove around and through the city past couple weekends and it just feels so big compared to what I’m used to, makes me feel so small as if my existence here doesn’t really matter and irrelevant honestly. The beach is really cool and all but besides that idk if it’s the “right move” to try and stay here permanently or just stay on the road once they’re all caught up here. Just like everywhere else I’ve worked at that my company has sent me so far, I’ve always told myself what is the point of staying wherever I’m at without a purpose .? Just feels like I’m on a real deep journey right now in this chapter of my life on figuring out and finding out what I really want in life or not.
Always been my dream of living here but now that I’m here, idk if it’s what I actually want . Figured I’d turn to the internet of all places and see what yall have to say or what advice yall can give me too on the subject. I just don’t want to dig myself into a hole here, digging my own grave .
Hello! I have just received a job offer to start in a few months, it is located near LAX and the LA Air Force Base. I am concerned about the cost of living and finding reasonable accommodations. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, and the neighborhood above LAX? Are these good areas? Cheaper or more expensive? Outdoor activities? Do you need a car? Can you bike places easily there? Thank you in advance for your help!
Hey all. Currently live in New York. Thinking about moving. Recently separated 33 years old- thinking about starting over. Never been done before. How much is a good salary to have a decent place to live? And the cost of rent etc? I know it’s subjective but I’m really trying to figure out my life.
I’m looking for the Good, bad, and ugly for these areas. Burbank, Toluca Lake, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, and also Encino.
We are a family of 5, however our oldest is going off to college, so we will be living as a family of 4. My husband travels for work 20 days on, 10 days off and can fly out of Burbank airport. We’re looking for a neighborhood with great walkability to shops and restaurants and highly rated public schools or private schools that aren’t impossible to get into. Family friendly is a must! 75% of the time it will be me with our 2 boys (9, and 13).
We’re coming from Houston and ready for a change. We’re prepared to spend more in cost of living and greatly downsize.
Hello I'm 25 living in Michigan thinking of moving to California to pursue work in animation
How much should I have saved up before I move?
What are good area to look for apartments?
Are there any other places outside of LA that's good for artist/animators ?
I am searching for rentals under 1k in Los Angeles on Zillow and pulled up around 100 results
Has anybody had experience renting in some of these cheaper units such as those in Korea town or this one here : https://www.zillow.com/apartments/los-angeles-ca/18th-street-apartments/5XnCCp/
Are these in safe areas?
