My German classmates don’t greet me back. They just stare, acknowledging that I addressed them, and then walk away. They don’t smile or change their facial expressions.
At first, I thought they didn’t like me for some reason, but now I’m wondering if this is a cultural thing.
Sometimes they do greet me back, but there doesn’t seem to be any obvious reason why they choose to respond one way or another.
Can someone enlighten me on this? Is it cultural?
Hello there,
I've moved to Germany few months ago: I'm Italian and so far I'm working in an Italian restaurant, however, I would really like to change it, since here the pay is kinda bad and the shifts are pretty messy. Everyone is telling me to avoid working for my compatriots, yet without German - I've started studying it but is pretty hard - seems impossible to find another job.
I've sent my curriculum to dozen of warehouses - in Italy I've worked for Ikea and we had people that didnt speak Italian there - yet no luck so far. Any tips you can give me? I'd take any job, just not for Italians.
Right now a jingle bells german remix is playing
As far as i understand it, there was a coalition of three german parties, and that coalition did not get along. FDP was one of the members, and prepared to leave. For this reason, they developed a detailed plan how to leave, whoch they called D-day paper, for some odd reason, possibly linking in to WW2 D-day?.
Now, somehow this plan got made public, and it was seen as a total disgrace, and several high ranking members of FDP resigned over it.
I do not understand why. is it not the job of those people to prepare stuff like that? I would have assumed them to resign if they did NOT make a detailed plan to leave some coalition they do no longer want to be a part of.
What am i missing here?
Hi everyone, I live in a WG (shared flat) in a student residence hall in Germany (4 person living) from the they I came to Germany, and so far I was registered for ZDF payment with the Beitragsnummer of a roommate who was living there before I came.
She moved out 2 month ago, and the new roommate who came to the WG said he would register the WG instead of her, and he did.
My question is, now that my old roommate whom I was using her Beitragsnummer is gone, how can I register myself with the new Beitragsnummer of the new roommate for WG, when I have not yet received any letter from the ZDF to use the aktenzeichen code and in reply I enter the new Beitragsnummer?
I searched all the forms available in their website, and the only forms that I could use needed a Aktenzeichen code coming in a letter which I do not have yet received.
Do I even need to enter the new Beitragsnummer or they automatically register me under this new contribution account?
I have even filled 2 contact forms so far and explaining them the situation, but I have not yet receive any response.
Thanks in advance for helping me.

Hi, I wonder if anyone from Germany has bought from this site? Is it safe to buy from? I sent an email in English to customer support but received a reply in German. When I translate this on Google into Swedish, it seems that they do not have the product. When I translate to English, the product seems to exist. Can someone help me translate if the product exists or not? Have a nice day😊 / Lina
Hi everyone, we're travelling to visit some friends overseas who have kids aged 1, 2, 4, and 5. What are some German things I could bring them? Are there any typical Germany toys, non-food products, etc for small kids (but nothing too expensive, under 10€ pp)?
Things I can think of so far are all in the food/sweets category, like Milka, Kinder, etc which is maybe only ok for the 4 and 5 year olds, maybe the 2 year old.
Thanks in advance!
I was quoted €350 (including 19% VAT) for repairing a front apartment door. The work includes removing the door, milling out and realigning the lower hinge, installing a new hinge, and remounting the door.
Does this price seem fair? Has anyone had similar work done?
Hello, I travel to Germany a lot and I am considering to buy the BahnCard 25. The description says:
The BahnCard 25 gives you a BahnCard discount of 25 per cent on flexible, saver and super saver fares within Germany in the corresponding coach class.
But my German friend told me he has never been able to get any discount for the saver and super saver fares, only for the most expensive flexible.
Thanks.
I was looking at the Fernbahntunnel Frankfurt and was almost shocked to see that it was forecasted to take TEN whole years in planning!
I know that you need to get environmental clearances and address concerns of local communities as well as actually design the thing. But there's no logical reason it should take longer to plan the thing than it does to construct. I mean, it's not a nuclear reactor lol.
Is there any specific reason why a project like this would take so long in planning??
Hi everyone,
I’m planning to buy the Apple iPhone 16 Pro 256GB in Desert Titanium, and after comparing prices using the Idealo app, I found the best deal on eBay. The price is lower than in stores like MediaMarkt, making me wonder if buying from there is safe.
Has anyone here bought high-value electronics (especially iPhones) from eBay? Were there any issues with authenticity, warranty, or receiving the product? I am asking as I never bought anything from eBay.
Also, do you have recommendations for trusted online retailers or any tips to save money on this purchase?
Thanks in advance for your advice! 😊

Hi All,
My lawyer applied for my German citizenship at the end of June and I have not heard anything back. What are your experiences as far as waiting time and requests for additional documentation?
I was offered a job in a real estate company as a half-time architect. She said she will call me back in few days to tell her my decision.
But she didn't talk about the salary. Does anyone have an idea of what a junior architect would get in real estate field as a half-time job in Berlin?
I’ve lived in Germany one and a half year now and I’m very lonely here. I’m finding it very hard to find friends here. What should I do?
Hello everyone,
I applied for a National (D) visa under the EU Blue Card category at the German Embassy in Islamabad. All my documents were complete, including a pre-approval from the BA under Section 36 and a statement of comparibility from ZAB. Now, it has been more than 3 months since my application was submitted. No further documents were asked for.
I am considering hiring an immigration lawyer because they are said to regularly have the better know-how in dealing with the authorities in order to have a positive impact on the case.
Anyone here who hired a lawyer for this specific purpose or a similar administrative purpose related to visas and work permits that can share their experience?
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some advice on how to handle a difficult situation with a couple of tenants in our two-storey apartment building, which has a total of 11 tenants. We have two tenants who are consistently noisy, often making loud noises from activities like cooking, moving around, banging doors, and shifting furniture well past 10 PM. To make matters worse, they smoke and have been throwing cigarette butts into a neighbor's garden, leading to complaints from our neighbors on two occasions.
Several of the other tenants have approached them to address the noise issue, encouraging them to be more considerate. We've also taken our concerns to the landlord, but unfortunately, nothing has changed.
I'm frustrated and wondering what my options are. Can I call the police to report the noise disturbances myself? Are there any other official channels or procedures I can use to escalate this issue effectively?
TL;DR included at the end, sorry this is long, I just want to be as thorough and certain as possible.
My partner is a German citizen and I am a United States citizen who came here to take an intensive language course and eventually integrate into Germany. My partner rents a 50sqm one room apartment (and if I remember correctly this number only includes the living area and not the kitchen/bathroom/hallway?) in Baden-Württemberg. The plan was for me to come here, which we informed the landlord of, and then do my Anmeldung here asap so that I could go to get my residence permit. I even had my appointment to Anmeldung, until I suddenly had to cancel as when we asked the landlord for required forms, he said that I was not permitted to live here, saying that another person would be "too much" and that he had only allowed me to stay for a "short visit". We've been beyond stressed about this for the past week or so now, searching desperately for housing for me, which... I can't reasonably afford another whole rent bill to pay myself, especially when this whole time I had thought my partner and I would be splitting our rent. However, as I did more research on renter's rights in Germany and stumbled across a post on here from someone who was in a similar situation a while back, it seems like he can't prevent me from staying, that we don't need his approval as long as we inform him and that he can't kick us out for it. I wanted to make my own post on the matter though, because the post I saw was about a married couple, which my partner and I are not. That didn't seem to factor in, but again I just want to be completely certain and I don't want to do anything that would compromise my residence in Germany. If it's true that the landlord can't stop me from living here, what are all of the steps I need to take in order to do this correctly/legally? What forms, actions, or anything do I need? I would appreciate any and all advice on the matter!
TL;DR my German citizen partner's landlord for her 50sqm 1 room apartment in Baden-Württemberg says that I (United States citizen) am not allowed to move in. Can he really stop me from living here? If he can't, what steps do I need to take in order to register my address?
Saw a number of scam posts here recently. In case some people don’t know, it’s also a scam. Especially if you’re Mama, not Papa. Or if you don’t have any children at all
I have a resident permit for studying here for my Master's degree, Type 16B ABS. 1 , and it will expire in March next year, and hopefully i will finish my Degree in February. I wanted to know what are my options or your advice or recommendations on what to do if i cannot afford to pay another 11K Euro for the blocked account,, aside from going back home.
Thank you all in advance.
I'm looking for a new WG and I went for a house visit a couple of days ago. I met the 3 people who lived there, they showed me the house and we talked a bit about ourselves. They mentioned that the landlady likes to be paid in full installments, so they all pay their share to the main tenant, who then pays the landlady.
One day later, I got a message back from them on WG gesucht saying that they would like to have me. When I confirmed that I was interested, they said that they couldn't have the contract ready right away, and that they would ask me to pay half the first rent now as an assurance that I wouldn't cancel last minute. They sent me an iban so I could make a bank transfer.
I haven't paid yet. My friends say it's fishy, because every time they moved to a WG, the contract was ready in a couple of days and they only had to pay after signing it.
On the other hand, it would be a weird scam. It's not that much money (170€), I've been to their house and I've seen and talked to them, and they asked for a bank transfer, not cash.
What I'm worried about is that I'm not getting any security on my side. They get some money that assures them I won't flake, but I get no guarantee that they won't cancel on me for whatever reason.
I sent them a message asking if I could get some kind of signed document stating the purpose of this transaction, and that I would like to have the contract ready as soon as possible.
I have moved into a new apartment 6 months ago, everything was fine untill it started getting cold, now I have some mold spots all over the apartment. I do ventilate my appartment twice a day, I cannot do more because I am working from home and its genuinely cold outside and my heater is on 2 all the time. How can I handle this ? should cleaning the mold from time to time be enough or I need some special stuff ? should I tell the landlord ?
My mum’s in need of some cheering up and she was trying to find a comedy movie she watched a few years ago - she thinks it was German, and it’s about a man who loses his job but his neighbours all know he has a holiday planned, so he ends up staying in the basement pretending to be on holiday! Any help would be so appreciated 😊
Would you say there is a strong mentality difference in between different regions in Germany? I heard for example people in the north are more direct, honest and somewhat more positive. And people in the south are more polite but also reserved and somewhat less positive. What is your experience?
So I moved from one city to another almost a year ago. I waited for the rundfunk letter to come (I was expecting it to come because my friend that I moved with had received it). Waited a year before I decided to anmelden myself on the rundfunkbeitrag.de website.
Another friend got her owed fee deducted immediately because she applied for SEPA. I chose Überweisung and have been waiting two weeks now without any answer/ letter back? Am I missing something? I really just want to pay off this damn thing already because I'm unexpectedly leaving Germany by the end of this month.
Anyone else who applied to pay rundfunk through Überweisung, what happened next?
