Algaculture news and trends, for seasteaders, autarchists, and followers of the blue revolution.

The Algaculture Reddit

Algaculture - a form of aquaculture involving the farming of species of algae.

The majority of algae that are intentionally cultivated fall into the category of microalgae (also referred to as phytoplankton, microphytes, or planktonic algae). Macroalgae, commonly known as seaweed, also have many commercial and industrial uses, but due to their size and the specific requirements of the environment in which they need to grow, they do not lend themselves as readily to cultivation (this may change, however, with the advent of newer seaweed cultivators, which are basically algae scrubbers using upflowing air bubbles in small containers).

Commercial and industrial algae cultivation has numerous uses, including production of food ingredients such as omega-3 fatty acids or natural food colorants and dyes, food, fertilizer, bioplastics, chemical feedstock (raw material), pharmaceuticals, and algal fuel, and can also be used as a means of pollution control.

Community DIY chlorella growth medium recipes

Hello fellow Algae enthusiasts! There is so much information out there for Spirulina growth medium but near impossible to find for Chlorella. That brought me here to start this thread in hopes of helping others wishing to get started in home Chlorella cultivation :) please any experts willing to share their knowledge, your input is appreciated.

I’ll go first. Growth Medium used in the Philippines, fish farms: Pellet Fertilizer NPK (N-16 P-16 K-16) Urea (N-46 P-0 K-0) Dolomite lime Bran Molases (from brown sugar) EM4 (Effective Microorganisms)

Can bioluminescent algae be used in algaculture?

Hello, I am doing some research for a project, and am wondering if bioluminescent algae can be used as a fuel source? What determines if algae can be used as a resource?

What's your yield per day?

I'm curious to know what a realistic yield per day (in grams) is per square meter of growing spirulina. Googling around is showing an extreme range of 5 grams per day on the low end, up to 120g+. Seems like an interesting hobby to pick up!

Best algae for single use plastic replacement?

I've been doing a bit of reading on the ability of seaweed/kelp/algae (seaweed) to be used as a replacement for single use plastic products.

What species of seaweed are best suited for this process?

Solar air pump for outdoor algae farm

Looking for advice on what would be a good air pump for a large fish tank style algae farm. Something sturdy so probably not eBay but want to keep it solar powered as the aim of the project is to minimise the carbon footprint. Any suggestions ?

How to grow your own Nannochloropsis monoculture in a saltwater solution at home

Hey, I figured this was the perfect place to put this. I'm an undergraduate biochemistry major and am going to be doing a research project and want to have an algal monoculture of Nannochloropsis to save some money.

I am totally new to algaculture but I have bred fish and bacteria before. I was hoping you guys had some resources and/or advice on how to grow and maintain a monoculture.

What sort of price range are we talking for such setups? Money isn't a huge issue but this is going to be a small scale operation and isn't actually the focus of the research so I'm hoping to do this as cheaply as possible while not compromising on quality.

I haven't decided exactly which species of Nannochloropsis to use so if there are differences in breeding them, I'd appreciate an explanation.

Thank you for your help!
