The Spirulina Reddit

Spirulina - a cyanobacterium that can be consumed by humans and other animals. There are two species, Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima. Wikipedia: spirulina

Arthrospira - a genus of free-floating filamentous cyanobacteria characterized by cylindrical, multicellular trichomes in an open left-hand helix. There is a dietary supplement made from Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima, known as Spirulina. The maxima and platensis species were once classified in the genus Spirulina. There is now agreement[vague] that they are in fact Arthrospira; nevertheless, and somewhat confusingly, the older term Spirulina remains in use for historical reasons. Wikipedia: Arthrospira

Good Morning. First time using reddit. Decided to start growing fresh spirulina with my dad with the promise that businesses were going to buy it up. Well that hasn't been the case. Anyone have any recommendations on how and where to sell spirulina? We freeze it to preserve and maintain shelf life. Got a website and made a couple sells there: www.sevaspirulina.com NC based farm. The product is tested regularly.

Has anyone grown spirulina at home??? need help with buying culture and led lights in India.

I found this youtube video explaining how to grow spirulina at home indoors and it looks easy to start. I'm not able to find the led lights (red or blue) and spirulina culture in India (Delhi).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akoDKM6Ogzw

I plan to keep it by the window for whatever sunlight is available for few hours in the day but need the led lights for consistency.

Can someone help direct me? Also any tips to keep in mind before I start growing.

Baking with old spirulina

I’ve got some 3(?) year old blue spirulina in my cabinet. Looking to make some blue buttercream, wondering if that would be safe? I know it generally doesn’t taste like much in icing, but if it’s old does it get funky?

Also got some backup fresh spirulina, but it’s very green. I’m assuming it’ll make the icing green as well?

What Are Benefits Of Spirulina Powder?

Spirulina powder, derived from a type of blue-green algae, is known for its rich nutrient profile and various health benefits. Here are some of the key benefits:

1. Nutrient-Dense Superfood

  • High in Protein: Spirulina contains about 60-70% protein by weight, making it an excellent source of plant-based protein, including all essential amino acids.
  • Rich in Vitamins and Minerals: It is packed with vitamins, including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), and minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium.
  • Powerful Antioxidants: Spirulina is a good source of antioxidants like phycocyanin, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.

2. Boosts Immune System

  • Spirulina can enhance the immune system by increasing the production of antibodies and infection-fighting proteins. It also helps in the production of white blood cells, which are essential for a strong immune response.

3. Supports Heart Health

  • Lowers Cholesterol: Spirulina has been shown to reduce levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).
  • Blood Pressure Regulation: Some studies suggest that spirulina can help reduce blood pressure, particularly in individuals with hypertension.

4. Improves Muscle Strength and Endurance

  • The antioxidant properties of spirulina can help reduce muscle fatigue and damage caused by exercise, making it beneficial for athletes and active individuals.

5. Aids in Detoxification

  • Spirulina is known to bind with heavy metals and toxins, helping the body eliminate them. This makes it a useful supplement for detoxification.

6. Supports Weight Loss

  • Low in Calories: Spirulina is low in calories while being nutrient-dense, making it a good supplement for those looking to lose weight without sacrificing nutrition.
  • Appetite Control: The high protein content can help curb appetite by promoting feelings of fullness.

7. Enhances Digestive Health

  • Spirulina can improve gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and aiding in digestion. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with digestive issues.

8. May Help Manage Blood Sugar Levels

  • Some research suggests that spirulina can help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, making it potentially beneficial for people with diabetes.

9. Potential Anti-Cancer Properties

  • Early studies indicate that spirulina might have anti-cancer effects, particularly in preventing or slowing the progression of certain types of cancer, such as oral cancer.

10. Improves Skin Health

  • The antioxidants in spirulina can help protect the skin from damage caused by UV radiation and environmental toxins, potentially reducing signs of aging and improving skin elasticity.

Spirulina is generally considered safe, but it's important to choose high-quality products from reputable sources to avoid contamination. Always consult with a healthcare professional before adding any new supplement to your routine, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

First time culture tips

Hi there ☀️ I am a first time spirulina grower, I grow diatoms and ulvella culture as a part of my job. I am receiving spirulina cultures (2x 20ml) and have realized it is coming in a MLA/ SW media. I will be looking to grow it in salt water and use f2 media in the lab before I move to regular fertilizers once it can be moved to larger outdoor spaces. Any tips foe when it arrives what to do with it? Totally out of my depth on this one 😅

Spirulina aide effects. Should I try again or just leave it?

Yesterday I found someone here on Reddit that said spirulina was good for his symptoms with gallstones. I wanted to try so I went to a shop and bought a bag. I added half a teaspoon to my yogurt and started to feel better. After dinner I took another half teaspoon with water. 1 hour of separation. Later I was going to take a shower and my body had itchy red patches and areas around the neck and the low belly-leg. I was scared. I also started having fast heartbeat next morning. Did I do an overdose or I'm just kind of allergic to it and just leave spirulina at all?

Thanks

pH doesn't rise

I've added 1 cup of baking soda to 4 gallons of water and that brought the pH to 8.3.

I wanted a pH of 10, so I've added more baking soda (a lot more), but the pH doesn't rise.

Am I doing something wrong?

Are these particles normal for spirulina culture.?

Hello. My culture came with a kit from ARS. I did everything in the kit. It's been 4 days in low low light. I'm seeing these white clumps at the bottom forming. Can it be dead spirulina? And is it normal for the culture to do this at day 4.

Nutrex Hawaiian Spirulina Tablet Disintegration Poor?

just read through a report by consumer lab yesterday and they claimed that nutrex pure hawaiian spirulina, now spirulina, and swanson spirulina all did not have adequate disintegration as they did not disintegrate within the allotted 30min, and with an additional 60min they still remained "mostly intact".

the report is from 2022 so im wondering if things are different now? have you guys struggled with any of these dissolving in water lately or something similar?

Using Hawaiian Spirulina while Cooking

Has anyone cooked with spirulina? Or know of the benefits and drawbacks of cooking with spirulina? I mixed some with a small omelet and although it still tasted good, the smell while cooking was not enticing to me until I added a lot of cheese. I usually have it in a smoothie or with yogurt but wanted to try something different.

Zarrouk medium fails

I tried to make zarrouk medium by myself many times but it always turned cloudy with white, powdery silt at the bottom. I have found that all the chemicals can be dissolved perfectly fine and clear when without sodium bicarbonate. But when I added sodium bicarbonate, the pH quickly raised and then boom. Soda-like gas bubbles and the solution turned cloudy immediately with falling white silt. I have tried so many times with various ways of mixing and separation steps. But it always tuned out the same. I’m going insane. I’m going to drop my latest method that’s “a bit” less cloudy and silty in the reply. Please give me some advices, corrections or your media formulas or anything. Thank you TT.

What can I do to keep my spirulina fresh?

My starter culture just came in the mail a bit earlier than thought. The thing is, I don't have the right water for my tank. Can I put it in the refrigerator? Or should I give it air and sunlight? I'm going shopping soon

Spirulina an ALS

I have been taking spirulina (5-10g) for around 2 months now and love everything about it including the extra energy it gives me. however I have seen scattered information online regarding spirulina sometimes been contaminated with BMAAs and therefore perhaps causing ALS. Ive tried researching if this link is valid and trustworthy but I'm unable to debunk or confirm it. Either im not looking in the correct place or don't understand the science. I was wondering if anyone has any credible information/links stemming from where this idea has come from. As it must have some origin. Im assuming a published paper or research but Im unable to locate it. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I would really like to continue taking Spirulna but if the risk of ALS is too high then it's an easy choice. Apologies if this question has already been asked I am unable to find any similar quires from a search.
