Trinbagonians, given the crime rate in Trinidad why aren't you protesting?

Hi everyone and good day. I wanted to ask this questions to undersand why people living in Trindiad are so complacent towards government corruption and the crime in Trinidad. It seems to me that this is a state of emergency and it's survival at this point. Why aren't you all standing up and protesting against such fearful conditions to live in?

Digicel Wifi

Hello everyone, I just have a few questions regarding digicel wifi. So I recently moved into a new house with my cousin and I am living on my own for the first time (meaning no parents etc). So this is the first time ever I have to get my own wifi lol.

I decided to go with digicel but I saw I needed to sign up online first because I didnt see any phone number on the website. The website said to sign up and an agent will contact me soon.

So I was wondering how long exactly do they take to contact you? And after that how long do they take to come do the installation? And lastly, is digicel wifi reliable as people say? Btw I live in the EAST

South asians in trinidad

From what i have seen of indian diaspora around the world ,from the pre modern migration era, indians tend to be in the business/ political class of the country .This is true in east africa ,fiji and south africa and to some extent England. However im not aware of the situations of indians in south america and the caribbeans, is the same true for indians there?

Again, this is for my tobagonians in the sub!!

With regards to the DATAS Bursary, how long did it take for you to recieve it/ be approved for it? Reason being, I'm a bit stressed about the wait time. I've applied since January, been pre approved since early March (there were some hiccups during my pre approval process in mid February), and been waiting since then but we in mid may🥹. Idk if I'll be able to apply for my visa on time and not sure if I can/should take another loan to pay for the visa process / school deposit?

Indian languages spoken in Trinidad?

Has anyone from Trinidad ever heard any Indian languages being spoken socially in Trinidad? If so, what part of Trinidad did you hear this and when?

Btw, I'm specifically asking about in social or everyday scenarios rather than for religious or academic purposes or environments and by Trini Indians rather than foreigners.

Any Trini beaches that could rival Tobago's?

Any beaches here with water bluer than Store Bay, Pigeon Pt, etc?

People seem to talk about there being beaches nicer than Maracas, Las Cuevas etc...where are they? We're a kinda small community here so don't be afraid to share...lol.

Can you record someone without their consent in Trinidad?

Like is it a case where it only matters if you're trying to use it in court?I don't really understand what the law says about this.

Example, lets say someone recorded me saying something. Would it be a crime? Would it matter if it was brought to court?

Please explain

I asked this is question already in the "Ask Ah Trini" thread earlier but got some opinions that left me confused. I'm on an extended visit to Trinidad and have been dining in restaurants more frequently. I have noticed that restaurants are adding a 10% service fee to the bill. I was told by management that this is divided amongst all the staff on a monthly basis as their "tip", however on 2 separate occasions in 2 different restaurants I have been asked for a tip by the server in addition to this charge. What is the proper protocol?

Tip more in addition to the included 10%?

Don't tip assuming it's included and risk annoying the server?

I didn't realize that tipping was now rampant in Trinidad and very expected; I don't mind tipping but not if it's already included in the service fee.

Can long-term contract employees work two jobs.

I'm currently on a one year contract, with hopes of it being renewed when the contract is over, however, I'm thinking of getting another job in the private sector. Will this be a problem in terms of NIS? Is this legal? Will IRHIS know. Any tips on going through with this?

How safe is Hiking Solo?

Hi folks, I'm wondering if hiking solo is something I can reasonably do or if y'all think things are bad enough where safety would be a rel big concern? I recently did breezy hill by myself without issue and wondering what other ones I could go do when that kinda vibe comes back. Suggestions for places to go, or even to avoid would be welcome

How do I get my CXC certificate?

About 13 years ago I wrote exam for 2 CXC subjects and received a soft copy certificate with my passes. However, I never followed up on the hard copy and now I have no idea where to go for the hard copy CXC certificate. I was told by a friend that I could pay for a new one but the site I've looked at doesn't seem to be working. I am hoping that my original copy is somewhere in Trinidad still awaiting my pickup.

Visitor/holiday SIM cards

Hi everyone,

I am visiting Tobago for the first time in June. I will be staying for 3 weeks: 2 weeks in the north and 1 week in the Black Rock area. I was hoping to get a local SIM card to use whilst I am there. Is it possible to buy a digicell/bmobile SIM from the UK? Maybe an eSIM or something like that? Or is the only way to buy one when I arrive at the airport?

Didn't study and failed csec

Let me be honest, the title isn't entirely accurate, but hear me out. I'm a fifth-form student from Tobago, and I must admit that I didn't put enough effort into studying for my exams. I neglected to push myself, and it's highly likely that I'll fail the Mathematics Paper 2. Although I performed well on my SBA and will certainly pass Paper 1 next month, Mathematics remains a significant concern.

I'm considering the option of repeating the year, but I'm uncertain whether this is the best course of action. Additionally, if I do decide to repeat, I'm wondering if it's possible to do so at another school, as the thought of repeating at my current school is quite embarrassing for me. You see, I have various goals that require some level of higher education, whether at UWI or another college, and I want to ensure that I'm adequately prepared.

Please bear with me, as I may come across as somewhat ignorant about certain aspects of this situation. I would greatly appreciate your guidance and insight on whether repeating is advisable and if it's possible to do so at a different school + other advice

Kamla: Young women should become mothers

OPPOSITION LEADER Kamla Persad-Bissessar is urging young women to consider the opportunity to become a mother. She said one of the most beautiful feelings in life is the happiness and joy experienced “when you return to a home of happy children."

In her Mother’s Day greeting on May 11, Persad-Bissessar said she made the call based on her own experiences.

“There is nothing more completing for a woman than the sounds of her children’s feet running through the house, the shrieks of their blissful laughter, the tender touch of their hugs and kisses, the satiating innocence of their smiles, the quenching love of holding a newborn baby in her arms for the first time.”

She said concentrating solely on careers, and not motherhood, during a woman’s 20s and 30s would not negatively affect a woman psychologically at that time because she would usually have a lot of single friends and thus a vibrant social life.

“However, as the years go by and women surpass 40 years and older, social life slows and friends get married, moving on with their own families. While you may have achieved your career goals, life without a family and children may get very lonely as you get older.

“Without familial love, money, and achievements become worthless when loneliness envelops your older years. All humans need love and companionship to achieve their fullest potential; women, in particular, have an inherent drive to nurture and care. It is very possible to have a career and be a mother at the same time— you don’t have to choose between them.”

Persad-Bissessar said mothers have long been the pillars of families at home and the foundation of progress at work in Trinidad and Tobago. She said the nation’s development and growth were built by generations of mothers who, against all odds, ensured their children attained better lives in a progressive nation.

“That is the legacy of many generations of mothers in our nation, and to them, we owe an eternal debt of gratitude.

“To all the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other maternal figures, I thank you for being our heroes and inspiration.

“This Mother’s Day, I extend my best wishes to all mothers for a safe, enjoyable day. I hope you feel loved and appreciated today, and may God bless and keep you always.”

Where Are All Of The Jobs (Why Are There So Few Opportunities)?

I tried to get a job as a garbage collector - no open positions.

All the jobs I see available online require some kind of degree. I apply for basically every job listing I see, no offers.

Are there no factory or plant jobs available?, because I'm not seeing anything online about it and I'm not sure where to go or look to apply for a job.

Where does one look to find a simple entry level job that only requires basic qualifications?

I'm really not seeing a path forward here, been stuck at home for months and it's starting to feel like I wasted my time studying and I should have just done a trade instead.

What was the point of all the effort if it only holds any weight if you have a degree. It's like you either have a value of 0 or 100, and there's no in-between.

Child born abroad, first time entering Trinidad.

Seeking advice. Any guidance will be appreciated, as there's limited info on the MNS site. I'll be entering Trinidad with a newborn who was born abroad. Baby's both parents are Trinidad citizens, and baby will be obtaining a Trinidad passport in Trinidad.

My question is, with baby entering on a foreign passport, will she be limited to a 90 day stay, and have to leave and re-enter with her Trinidad passport?

The Need for Healthcare Reform, Retraining, Customer Service Training, and Accountability in the Healthcare Sector

Mt.Hope, Trinidad & Tobago — In a heart-wrenching incident on January 27th 2024, a glaring light was cast on the deep-seated issues plaguing our healthcare system. At a time when medical advancements are at their peak, a 96-year-old woman was left waiting for six hours in an emergency room for a CT scan. But what unfolded during those hours is a tale of neglect that ended in tragedy.

A man, whose name may never be known, entered the same emergency room, visibly in distress. Witnesses report he was experiencing cold sweats and had difficulty breathing – classic symptoms that typically trigger immediate medical attention. Yet, in this case, they did not. Despite his obvious discomfort, he was told to "sit and wait."

This man’s wait ended not with medical care, but with his quiet, unnoticed passing in the very waiting room he had hoped would be his refuge. He was later wheeled away, almost as an afterthought, a stark and harrowing symbol of a system failing those it is meant to serve.

Such incidents raise critical questions about the state of healthcare in Trinidad and Tobago, where citizens' tax dollars fund public hospitals. It's a story not just of one man’s untimely death but a broader narrative about systemic issues needing urgent address.

The emergency room, often the first point of contact between a patient and medical care, should be a place of swift and efficient treatment. However, the reality, as this incident painfully illustrates, is often far from this ideal.

The need for reform is undeniable. It begins with retraining staff to recognize and appropriately respond to medical emergencies. Customer service, often overlooked in healthcare, plays a crucial role. Patients are not mere numbers; they are individuals in distress seeking help.

Accountability in healthcare is another cornerstone requiring reinforcement. Incidents like these should not be brushed under the carpet. They should be thoroughly investigated, and those found responsible for negligence should be held accountable.

But beyond accountability, there's a dire need for systemic overhaul. This includes better resource allocation to ensure that emergency rooms are not understaffed or under-equipped. It calls for better triage systems to ensure that those in dire need are attended to promptly.

Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. The citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, and indeed people everywhere, deserve a system that upholds this principle. A system where no one dies waiting for care that never comes.

As we mourn the loss of a life, let it not be in vain. Let it be the catalyst for change, stirring those in power to take a hard look at the shortcomings of our healthcare system and to commit to the reforms necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future.

second/third generation trinis living in trinidad

im a British-born Trini and was wondering if anyone has ever come across someone from the diaspora (born and grew up abroad) moving to and living in Trinidad and what their experience was like, and how easy was it for them to find employment? Just asking out of interest rather than me having plans to do so
