Questions before planning a vacation to Antigua

Hello all!

I am thinking about visiting Antigua for family vacation and had some questions since I do not know anything about the country.

My quick Google search tells me it's a safe country to visit. But are there any racism toward Asians? US citizens?

Is it safe to travel with a rental car exploring wonderful beaches?

I'll be travel with my wife and my son who will be 5 years old. Other than water play, anything fun for 5 year old to do? Waterpark maybe?

Do people speak English?

Are there specific parts I should not explore? Beyond certain time? I guess I am asking if there are any bad neighbors I should avoid if I visit.

How are the beaches? Are they soft white sands? Washed up bleached corals? Big rocks? What about seaweed washing up on the beaches?

Currently looking at some townhouses in Jolly Harbour. Any opinion regarding Jolly Harbour?

Thank you in advance!

Moderate Snorkeling

Good evening! I will be visiting St. Johns and wondered about snorkeling. I’m a fair snorkeler, so nothing too intense. Wondering about public or private transportation from the cruise port. Thank you!

Two nights NW side of Antigua guest house Feb 2025

Hi - looking for recommendations on a guest house roughly between the airport and a few miles south of St John’s. We land about 6 PM so a place that is within walking distance of a decent pub/restaurant (doesn’t need to be fancy) for dinners and breakfasts, a beach (or a good view) and a shop to get some beer, snacks etc. Target $150-200 night is possible. Thanks for suggestions.

New years eve

Looking at possibly coming back to the island around New years for a week and was just wondering what the best area to stay in would be during that time? We will have a car to visit all of the beaches however driving on NYE might not be to wise so considering staying in one location for most of the week and moving to a different location for at least that night but it really is dependent on what is going on where. Typically we enjoy walking to dinners but not sure that is really an option though I'm not too familiar with the island as I typically stay at resorts with quite a bit on campus. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Ganja

HYPOTHETICALLY: if a traveller wanted to come across green stuff, is there a way/place to do so?

Asking for a friend of course 😅

Driving and Vacation to Antigua

I really want to surprise my wife with a trip to Antigua island. I've narrowed down my choices from 6 islands down to Barbados and Antigua. I personally prefer Antigua because of the more adventurous feel and opportunity for secluded beaches to ourselves. Barbados feels a bit overcrowded and the areas where you get the baches to yourself seem to be not exactly what i was looking for. The only thing holding me back is driving...I want to drive, and will drive which ever i select. But it sounds like Antigua is way harder to drive in. I've never driven on the left, but have driven in Iceland during winter and costa rica. I'm not scared of the roads, more so the roads + left hand driving. What are opinions on driving? Is it safer to go with Barbados?

Citizenship by Investment

I’m looking for information on this. From my research, real estate looks like the best option ( single unit, not fractional )

Can someone help me with the rules, stipulations and approved agents to work with? Or who to contact? It’s going to be for my sister and I

Our hotel reservations on Antingua just got cancelled and we are now looking desperately for a room, hopefully near the beach for 9 nights starting Dec 4th. Any thoughts without spending a fortune?

Thanks!

Valtrex

Is there valtrex available OTC at the pharmacy or do you need a prescription? If I bring my own, what do I need to do to make sure I don't have problems at customs?

Your Favorite History

What's your favorite historical stories or facts on Antigua and Barbuda? I am half, but I know nothing apart from very little and very sad stories my parent told me.

I also have a cousin from cuba who is of Antiguan descent and I'd love to tell him something interesting too

LGBT scene?

We are two lesbians on Antigua (married couple, feminine) so we can go out to straight places for night life but would prefer an LGBT venue

Does anything exist? If not what is the best place to go out this weekend? 😂

Taxi?

We are planning on grabbing a taxi from the airport, do they take credit cards or will we need cash? Are US dollars okay?

Also, is there a fare finder, or a way to predict about how much the ride will cost?

Hiking trail recommendations?

Hey everyone, my boyfriend and I are visiting for a week in late November. We both very much enjoy hiking and love a good look off view from a mountain. Does anyone have any recommendations for easy to find/follow hiking trails that have a nice look off/waterfall/swimming hole or anything of the sort, that doesn’t involve the risk of getting lost in the jungle? lol

Thanks in advance!!
