LGBT scene?

We are two lesbians on Antigua (married couple, feminine) so we can go out to straight places for night life but would prefer an LGBT venue

Does anything exist? If not what is the best place to go out this weekend? 😂

Taxi?

We are planning on grabbing a taxi from the airport, do they take credit cards or will we need cash? Are US dollars okay?

Also, is there a fare finder, or a way to predict about how much the ride will cost?

Hiking trail recommendations?

Hey everyone, my boyfriend and I are visiting for a week in late November. We both very much enjoy hiking and love a good look off view from a mountain. Does anyone have any recommendations for easy to find/follow hiking trails that have a nice look off/waterfall/swimming hole or anything of the sort, that doesn’t involve the risk of getting lost in the jungle? lol

Thanks in advance!!

"Antigua Locals: Got Wild Stories of Street Feasts & Raw Nightlife? This Podcast Wants You!"

Alright, Antigua roamers and night creatures—

I’m cooking up a podcast, but this isn’t your polished, pre-packaged, bite-sized BS. No, the first segment’s all about Antigua and Barbuda—the raw, sweaty pulse of the islands, the side only real locals know. I want to hear from the streetwise legends who can lead me straight to the greasy spoils of food stalls, the spots where a few crumpled EC dollars can score you a feast fit for the gods.

And don’t even get me started on the nightlife. I’m after those shadowy corners of St. John’s where the rum flows cheap, the soca or dancehall beats throb like a pulse, and sanity is just a distant memory.

This isn’t your glossy brochure garbage—no tourist traps for the wide-eyed visitors snapping photos. No, this is about real life—gritty, unfiltered, and maybe a little dangerous. The kind of stories that are soaked in sweat, chaos, and late-night regrets.

So I’m calling out to you—the mad ones, the locals who’ve lived it, breathed it, and stumbled through it at four in the morning. Jump on a virtual call with me and spill your guts about what makes Antigua tick. No fluff, no scripted crap—just the truth, as raw as the streets and the beaches themselves.

If you’ve got stories that would make a tourist think twice or know the back alleys, hidden rum shacks, and underground vibes better than your own reflection, hit me up. Who knows—maybe when this podcast blows up, we’ll share a drink at a dive bar far from the guidebook crowd. Let’s make some noise.

Need a car for 6 months

Hi all!

My wife & I (she a Trini, I'm British) have just moved to Antigua for 6 months. We need a car and are debating hire vs buy a good-enough-for-6-months pre-owned.

Trying to get a handle on what the prices should be for both and how not to get ripped off - any tips would be really appreciated!

P.S. boy is Antigua beautiful 😍

Antigua Bella

Has anyone stayed at or heard of the Antigua Bella villa near Jolly Harbor? Any feedback? We are supposed to stay there later this year. A bit concerned because few reviews and they have a lot of open dates. If anyone has experience with this place and the nearby area would be grateful to hear!

Christmas/NewYears Antigua

This will be our fourth visit to Antigua, our favorite island in the Caribbean, and we’ll be staying in Jolly Harbor from Dec 25 to Jan 1 (previously stayed in English Harbour). We’ve enjoyed some of the top experiences—swimming with the pigs, stingrays, dining at Sheer Rocks and Catherine’s—but this time, we’re looking for something more local. We plan to take a private boat to Barbuda for a meal at Uncle Roddy’s, head to Shirley Heights for Sunday or New Year’s, and visit the Antigua Dog Rescue and Donkey Sanctuary to make donations and establish a connection for ongoing support. We’d love any recommendations for local experiences—favorite restaurants, reggae bars, beaches or activities we may have missed! Thank you!

Dive club on Antigua?

Spending six months on Antigua soon and would love to get some (SCUBA) dives in every week or two without going on (and paying for) a tourist boat. Are there any dive clubs that meet up regularly to do some shore dives? Hoping to meet some people to hang out with too.

Virtual World Trip: Antigua and Barbuda (Update)

Wah gwaan!

This post is an update of my previous publication after another week exploring this country.

On the market of St John's in the videos of Hensley Isaac I noticed these small little pineapples and I didn't think much about it, but it seems to be a celebrity here. The famous Antigua black pineapple! I did check online if it was possible by bending space and time and get some in Europe, but it’s sadly impossible. From what I read, it tastes sweeter and has less acidity than a usual pineapple.

As in Angola, there is also a strong culture of Carnival in Antigua and Barbuda and I really love to check the videos of Hensley Isaac and other Antiguan creators (As Told by Ali and TheAntiguaChannel) about it. Steel orchestra music is now one of my favourite music styles (In fact, I'm writing this post while listening to “Mambo Jumbo” by Brute Force Steel Band). The Calypso Monarch Competition (what a name!) is also held during Carnival and reward the best songwriter and singer of Antigua and Barbuda. In Germany, we also have a culture of Carnival but, it’s essentially in the west part of the country, and we seem to not have the same definition of fun lol.

Apart from the two main islands, I explored the little, remote island of Redonda. It’s a small piece of land, which inhabits no constant human settlement, but a large population of birds like the Brown and Masked Boobies (no pun intended) and other wildlife. Thanks to restoration and preservation works by Environmental Awareness Group Antigua and other agencies, the fauna and flora of this island is on its way to be completely restored. If you are interested, you can check this video about the means used for the restoration. By the way, this add by Environmental Awareness Group Antigua about sea turtles is really well done.

Enough talking, let’s cook something!

This week, I cooked the following dishes:

  • Pepperpot

https://preview.redd.it/fiwib8klmwsd1.jpg?width=6152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65a4b078a7dabd5b3ef393fd40a1917cb733a7e4

I got the flu and this was the perfect remedy. The recipe calls for Scotch Bonnet, but Ghost Pepper does the job well too (just be prepared to suffer)!

  • Coconut Sugar Cake

https://preview.redd.it/gili3r2omwsd1.jpg?width=6936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf93c46d827c541f3073f41f31f5f6be0bc1c7bf

Simple and tasty! With a little bit of food coloring, you can make some nice-looking sweets, but I kept it plain and sprinkled some rock candy on top.

It seems (so far at least) that the hurricane season swept over Antigua and Barbuda without many damages. The Tropical Storm Ernesto crossed the Caribbeans in August and since then no over big hurricane was recorded. Hope it stays like this for this season.

All right! That was it for my little exploration of these two (three?) islands! It was a nice introduction to the Caribbean, and I can’t wait to explore the other islands countries!

Stay safe everybody!

Bye!

Things to do in Antigua

Hello all!

My husband and I are staying at Keyonna beach the first week of December and are looking at things to do while we are there! How much exploring of the island can we do on our own? Any excursions that anyone could recommend? Some of them are pricey so just want to make the best out of the money for our honeymoon 😊. If we do explore on our own, is it best to get a rental car? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Virtual World Trip: Antigua and Barbuda (Country #5)

Hello everybody!

Just for fun, I began to do a "virtual world trip" of all* the countries in the world without leaving my home. Each week I "visit" one country by looking at live cams, cooking some dishes, listening to the radio, and checking the news.

I know, it's not like visiting the country in real life, but time and money are two limiting factors, and this is (sadly) the closest I will be to experience the country.

My first posts were about South Africa, Albania, Algeria and Angola. Here we go with the fifth country on my list: Antigua and Barbuda!

Let's begin with the usual "What I know of the country": well, ... It's in the Caribbean (insert Jack Sparrow reference) and does Rihanna not come from there originally?

Anyway, first thing first, I checked out the meaning of the name "Antigua" and "Barbuda". Both have Spanish origins and mean respectively "Ancient" and "Bearded". "Ancient" I kinda get it, but "Bearded"? Wikipedia says "The "bearded" of Barbuda is thought to refer either to the male inhabitants of the island, or the bearded fig trees present there." The mystery remains...

There is one live webcam working in Antigua located at the Deepwater Harbour of St. John's and provided by Kings Casino, but because of the time zone's difference I mostly look at it at night where nothing happens. On YouTube, I discover this very interesting YouTube Channel. It's a guy filming his road trip and his visit to the market of St John's. I particularly like his strolling to the market. By the number of rastacaps, you really notice, that we are nearing Jamaica.

While checking out some radio stations, I found Healthy choice FM. It's a radio station, which broadcast jazz or Antiguan music most of the time mingled with short health advises (for example positive affirmations). I may sound old, but I find this quite cool!

Without much surprise, the traditional dishes of Antigua and Barbuda are very similar to the one that I made for Angola, because of historical reasons. Ochroes seems to be a staple food here, inexpensive and abundant, but in Germany it's totally the contrary. First, most people don't know it (like me, one month ago), and when you find it, it's quite expensive (7€/Kg or 11EC$/Lbs, if my conversion is correct)!

Luckily I found some and cooked Cou-Cou with Cod fish and Chop up.

https://preview.redd.it/uih0vt3h6ird1.jpg?width=6936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7466956c30407de482f5e5a89c0f1c522e042f15

My cou-cou was too wet, and I couldn't make it stiffer, but the whole dish was tasty!

Online, I also read that cod fish is also eaten with Ducana, so I made some.

https://preview.redd.it/j6e2dhym6ird1.jpg?width=6936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aba87002726ea6ddaeb78c46113cf4d00968bf55

It's one of the most exotic dishes that I ever ate. It's so nice, and it's so strange at the same time.

All right guys, this is it for the first week. I hope you found my post interesting. If you have any recommendations about dishes, places, songs that I should make, check out or listen, I will be happy to do so. See you next week for my update post.

With hurricane season coming right now, I hope you are all safe and sound!

Have a nice day!

Bye bye!

*Some country like Afghanistan, North Korea and others, I will sadly not do. Or perhaps, we will see...

24 hrs in Antigua

I will be staying in Antigua overnight in mid-December between visiting Dominica & Montserrat. I’ll be traveling by myself and need to figure out where to stay that is convenient to the airport and where I can get in a good 5-6 mile walk and enjoy a couple local meals. I’d prefer to stay at a locally owned guesthouse if possible. I would appreciate any suggestions for places to stay and other things I might want to do on a short visit.
