Bonaire is a Caribbean island and is also known as Divers Paradise. It is one of the last unspoiled paradises in an emerald green sea. Whether you like diving, surfing, kiteboarding, sailing, hiking or simply soaking up the sun, on Bonaire you are on the right place.

Is Belle Car okay?

Their rates are super good and the people very personable. My only concern is handing over a cash deposit since they don’t take cards. My experience with Avis has been awful and I have read that the local agencies are reliable on the whole.

Any input? TIA for your advice.

Snorkel vest and water shoes suggestions

We are arriving in Bonaire in December for two weeks and this is our first time to the island. We are new to snorkeling but would like to explore the island. Looking for suggestions on types of snorkel gear to buy from the U.S. especially snorkel vest and water shoes. TIA!

Migration

Hi I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, A levels education, English only Spanish I can understand not speak considering migration to any of the ABC Islands. How does the process work, what should I know before making big steps, what jobs are OK for English speakers. How easy or difficult is it to make friends and so on.

I'll be honest I have almost zero knowledge on the ABC except as a tourist destination but that's most of the Caribbean so all insight is helpful even if you think it's silly or something.

Thanks

Fine Dining Recommendations

Hi - out of the fine dining spots, which would you recommend going to first? Would ideally love to try all 3, but our time is a bit limited.

  1. CHEFS

  2. Zara's

  3. Brass Boer

Staying in Kralendijk vs Sabal Palm Area

Having a hard time deciding between going with a hotel in the middle of town vs a more resort-vibe hotel like Delfins / Windsock.

We have a group of 5 who’ll be diving most of the day. Not planning to do a car rental as we’ll be doing guided dives + drinking. Wanted to stay close to town to hit up some bars / restaurants. But, the resort scene at a place like Delfins looks appealing as well.

Does anyone have a strong preference that leans them one way or the other?

Tips for 1st time visitor

Planning to stay at Delfins for a quick diving trip in December. We’re doing guided dives, so the dive shop will be transporting us.

However - we’d ideally want to make our way into town a few nights to hit up the bars and restaurants. Are there taxis / car services we can use without getting a rental?

Our whole group would ideally be drinking, so that’s the main reason for not wanting a rental.

Bonaire - snorkeling and fishing

I will be traveling to Bonaire to dive and snorkel in a couple weeks. We’re staying at Divi resort.

What are the best places to snorkel? (We’ll have a vehicle and don’t mind taking a trip to islands)

What are some good bone fishing outfitters?

Car rental over Christmas

We are super last minute and just booked flights this morning. Hitting some dead ends with rental cars. Anyone have any experience with Pickup Huren Bonaire? They are showing availability (12/23-31).

Any other recommendations? AB has no inventory. Prins has a truck.

Custom cost for Amazon deliveries

Hello, I’ll be returning to Bonaire after 2 years in the Netherlands with my family and I’m ordering some essentials for my daughter’s room. I’m comparing cost of buying the items here and carrying them down in my suitcase or having them shipped directly to my apartment in Bonaire. Can someone tell me where I can find information on customs cost and the overall process?

Are teachers needed in Bonaire? In what areas?

Hello! I've posted before but my family plans on moving here down the road, and I was wondering if teachers are in demand here? I heard that the government jobs were the best paid/most competitive so it made me wonder if perhaps teaching is also quite competitive?

And if it is in demand, which areas(primary/secondary/math/etc)? I'm planning on continuing my degree in education prior to moving down, and I'm mostly debating whether to get a degree in primary education (I understand that B2 level Dutch is required to teach primary levels?), or a degree in English as a second language (but I found conflicting information, some saying English isn't taught, others saying English is a foreign language class for students 12 years old+, and I couldn't find how commonly students take an English class).

Or is there a governing body I can contact about this? Just to make sure I'm not making any errors.

Much thanks for your help!

Any communities of freedivers looking for dive buddies? I'll be freediving in Bonaire from late November till februari, looking to join others.

Recently got into freediving, but I notice I am able to go way deeper than I think I should do on my own. So for safety, but also because I'd like to meet likeminded people, do you guys know of a good community, whatsapp group, or facebook page I could join to meet fellow freedivers on the island?

Solo Traveler to Bonaire in January - Recs please!

I’m traveling to Bonaire for the first time in January by myself to dive for a few days. I’d like to go on a few guided dives (I’m advanced but like going with a small group). Any good dive shop recommendations?

Also, it looks like I should rent a car to explore and get around easily. Any favorite shops to rent from?

Thanks a lot for any help!! I’m very excited!!

Do arriving planes disembark from front and back?

Currently my family has exit row seats on our arriving flight (AA), but we have the option to move closer to the front of the plane if that means we get off the plane quicker. I may be overthinking this, but our flight last month to a Caribbean island, it made a big difference in the customs/immigration line whether you were one of the first or last off the plane. It’s been many years since our last trip to Bonaire and I have no memory of the airport.

Place to sell car for parts

My car on the island has recently broke down to the point it’s not worth repairing the issue on my own. The engine and transmission still run really well, the body is just pretty rusted. Do you know of anyone on the island that will buy the car for parts?

Lost my daughter's watch

Hello, friends! My daughter lost her watch while we were in Bonaire this past week - it's a Verizon Gizmo, with a teal faceplate and an orange strap.

We were staying at the Chogogo resort, near Kralendijk - but we have no idea where we might have lost the dang thing.

If someone spots it - long odds, I know - I'd appreciate you lettin' me know.

Access to prescribed testosterone?

Hello! My family has been considering moving to Bonaire, and I understand that gender affirming care is legal in Bonaire but it's quite small so I was wondering if, regardless of legality, if it's possible to access testosterone for ftm transgender individuals as someone in my family is transgender- or if it's not readily available from the island, is that something that can be shipped from the Netherlands. Thank you 🙂

Local recs for hikes, yoga, massage

Arrive Saturday for a week and hoping to augment the trip with some extras. Please share any favorite hikes (trail heads or starting points are helpful), yoga classes, and massage practitioners.

Many thanks for the restaurant recs previously posted and pinned!

Edited to add: Recs for live music too, please! I’ve found Eddy’s, Little Havana, and Club Trocadero, but please let me know what I’m missing. Thanks again.

Reef health?

How is the current state of the reefs with the bleaching? I'm going back in December and someone on a scuba sub said basically everything is dead or beige. Is it really that bad everywhere??
