Insects - Bermuda

A need some deep info on the insect situation in Bermuda - or any other scary wildlife.

I’m interested in Mosquitos or anything that bites, and Cockroaches or anything else that’s scary. If there are cockroaches do they fly? I know some can fly, I learned the hard way. Also, spiders? How big are they here?

Important!

Admiralty house park cliff jumping

I am in Bermuda for vacation and do cliff jumping pretty often and I heard Admiralty house park was a great option. Can any of the locals give me some details? Like if I have to worry about tides or how deep it usually is. Going there Thursday 11/26 any responses will be appreciated, thank you!

March, June or October in Bermuda

I was wondering what season would be best to visit Bermuda because I only have school holidays off

These are my possibilities

The first week of March. Off season but it looks like maybe the ocean isn't warm enough to swim?

Last week of June. The beginning of high season and more expensive but maybe warmer?

Mid October for Canadian Thanksgiving and some education office days. Might be hurricane, but might not and could be beautiful with the food festival on

Any advice is appreciated, thank you in advance

ugh, rental scammers

I am so dishearten and upset , I was showed a place a few days back and the pictures looked great online only to go there and the walls were broken down and the walls were literally black and cracked all over- it’s right next to a demolished house with cement everywhere. On top of that, there are scammers asking for upfront “application fees” and promising to send documents from another country. It’s heartbreaking that people are being misled like this, especially when they’re just looking for a safe place

People are genuinely taking advantage of the housing shortage :(

Immigration Visa Requirements Changes. Which USA, UK, Canada visa?

Hello, last year the government changed the immigration requirements. Now certain nationalities need multi entry access to US, UK or Canada.I’m trying to get a visa for my Filipina wife, she is a sponsored dependent on my work visa. Does anyone know which visa to apply for in these countries? Why doesn’t a transit visa suffice if we have no reason to go to these countries?

What is your take on getting a job as a Teacher (primary) as an expat wife?

My friend was offered a job in Bermuda but his wife is a Primary school Teacher. Will she be able to find a job easily as a dependent or will it be a challenge? I know Teachers were on strike recently but I dont know enough to give her a solid response.

Christmas Trip Questions!

My wife and I are considering a Christmas trip to Bermuda and after reading through a bunch of posts and comments, I wanted to double-check a few things/gain some insight from you lovely folks. Apologies in advance if any of these thoughts/questions are misinformed.

To start, we were between The Rosewood and The Loren and while it seems Rosewood is much more expansive, the rooms seem much larger at Loren. Also, the food prices at Rosewood seem pretty astronomical whereas Loren felt more on par with NYC (where I currently live). So I feel pretty good going for the Loren especially considering the rooms are cheaper too.

What I can't tell is if we stay at the Loren are we relegating ourselves to an isolated staycation? Don't get me wrong, I love some downtime, but I have some wonderful, childhood memories exploring Bermuda with my late Father and I'd love to bike (railway trail), maybe cruise around in a twizzy, check out horseshoe bay (I know it will be too cold to swim, but I don't mind) etc.

From what I've researched, it seems cabs are very expensive and while Loren does seem to rent out Twizzy's on their site, it also seems to show cars are only available at the Hamilton Princess location.

It seems like the Loren hotel might be kind of isolated and staying there is a potential roadmap to spending a ton on cabs if we want to sightsee?

Also, would y'all generally recommend against a Christmas visit? Too cold? Or not too crowded and perfectly comfortable?

Any insight would be immensely appreciated and if any of you ever made your way to NYC - I promise to return the favor!

Canadian-Bermuda Expat Tax Accountant Help

I'm planning on moving to Bermuda for a full time position once the work permits are all in order.

For my fellow Canadian expats, did you find an accountant in Bermuda to help with the Canada/Bermuda taxes or is a Canadian accountant that specializes in international accounting good enough? I just want to ensure that my primary/secondary ties are severed properly and to know what to do with my existing RRSP accounts.

How to deal with the high humidity?

As a result of yesterday’s rain, the apartment got moldy in just a day! Also it feels like we have to rewash all of our clothes, as they started to smell badly.

Any suggestions how to keep the rooms less humid? Dehumidifiers are quite pricey.. Should we run the ceiling fans 24/7? What can we do with bathrooms?

TIA!

Another moving to Bermuda post

Hi all,

I'm considering an offer I've received from an FS firm and was just hoping to get an up-to-date gauge on how sufficient the package might be/not be, for which I'd be very grateful.

They emphasised the cost of living being very high etc, and I've tried to go through older posts about prices but im not sure hownuseful the info is with how naturally dofferent each situation is.

I would be moving from the North of England, am 29, single with no dependents. The offered salary is $150k w/ additional bonus, benefits, relocation, and temp accommodation (awaiting further details of the benefits)

However, I am also aware of the need for health insurance, which could be important as I have a pre-existing condition that requires regular medication. Would this likely be a big increase in cost? How would that work?

In closing, is the package good by today's standards, would i be able to have a social life? Or would I be left with fairly little to live comfortably?

Really appreciate any potential answers :)

Money Transfers

Just moved to Bermuda and need to transfer some money into my new HSBC USD account from Canada. It seems Wise (Transferwise) doesn’t send to Bermuda and I’d like to avoid the fees RBC charge when doing an international wire. What’s the most economical way you’ve found to get your $$ into Bermuda? Thank you!

Roommate(s)? Buehler?

Hi All:

31M moving from Canada to Bermuda. Lawyer by training. As is patently obvious to anyone looking, the rental market is tough. In particular 1 bedrooms. Are there an ex-pats out there that are looking for a roommate? Perhaps you are already settled in Bermuda with a vacancy or are planning on making the move shortly. I am aiming for a February/March lease. Would like to stay somewhat central i.e. Pembroke/Paget/Hamilton etc. The vast majority of two bedrooms are ~$5000 per month.

Shoot me a note if you are interested!

Vrbo and airbnb

I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about both these services over the past few years; hosts canceling your reservation so they could repost their property at a higher price, multiple fees added, people finding hidden cameras in private areas like bathrooms, super long chore lists (we are perfectly willing to clean after ourselves, but not scrub the place top to bottom and THEN pay a $200 cleaning fee).

I’ve also talked to some Bermudians I know and they recommend using one of these to find a place for our family vacation next year.

I’m interested if anyone has stories or recommendations, good or bad, about any rentals they’ve stayed in. I’m willing to give them a try to try to save some money, since the resorts are looking to be twice and three times more expensive. We are really only looking for somewhere with 3 beds (my husband and I, plus two older kids), and somewhere close to a bus stop.

Thanks for any info!

Help with Trip in December 2024- Where do we stay?

We are taking a short trip to Bermuda,, for the first time in December. It is 2 adults and no children. We want to be near a beach but we don't want to miss being able to get to restaurants and do other things. What is the best suggestion? Do we stay at a resort, and if so, which one? If we do, we would be looking for a hot tub and heated pool since I understand it is not that warm during that time—any suggestions on where to stay and things to do. Thanks

Bermuda ( Caution!⚠️)

Amidst the pristine pink sand beaches and beautiful water is a growing danger to its residents and visitors alike. What? You may ask. Dog attacks! Yes! Dog attacks! The small island of Bermuda has seen a fast and high spike in the amount of attacks mainly from one of the most viscous dog breeds; Pitbull! Yes! Pitbulls! There is a growing number of attacks on the elderly and even most recent a baby! People are having there face chewed off and left traumatized with extensive hospital stays and lifetime scars. Pitbulls are bred illegally on island and the authorities it appears have little to no grasp on the problem. One has to be bitten for a case to ‘be counted’ and even then owners are being let off with warnings. Most recently, a owner made the decision to put down his Pitbull after the dog he raised for years turned on him chewing him up pretty badly.

Dog owners can be seen any time of the day walking Pitbulls just about anywhere ( walkjng trails, public parks, main road) without even a leash on!

The authorities are most definitely sleeping on this issue. Maybe they also own said breeds!

Majority of Bermudian homes do not have concrete walls that could hinder a dog from attacking someone passing going about their business. Their boundaries are mostly cherry trees or other bushes neatly maintained which leaves passerby’s to the mercy of the dogs.

The island is widely advertised as safe and in comparison it is true but its an entirely different story with dog attacks! PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Be extra cautious when walking on the streets in beautiful Bermuda!

Expat 1-Bed Rental Price Range

I'm planning on moving to Bermuda pending work visa, etc. My work will be providing 1 month of housing to get me settled in. I had a few questions regarding how the rental market is in Bermuda:

  1. Is a budget of $3-3.5k USD enough to get a 1-bedroom/studio apartment in the Pembroke/Devonshire/Paget areas? I see on property skipper the cheapest is $5-7k USD per month (But the 1-bed room apartments are crazy big, I don't believe I need all that space)
  2. Is 1 month time enough to find a place once I arrive on the island? Am I able to secure something while I am not physically there? Can I just wire cash from a foreign country to lock down a place before arriving on the island?
  3. Are there any preferred real estate agents to contact to get some extra listings? There aren't too many on propertyskipper.
  4. Where is the majority of the traffic located during rush hour? I hear that there is one part of the island where the traffic backs up due to the traffic lights? I would like to avoid that area.

Your responses are much appreciated!
