Cost of Pregnancy

Hi all quick question, I am not really seeing any specific costs laid off for the cost of having a child in Cayman Islands. Can someone give a little more insight into the cost of particularly labour and delivery. Thanks much

Tropical depression coming?

Hi all!

We are visiting your beautiful island this Saturday for 2 weeks. Looks like a tropical depression is forming south of you. Just curious what the locals take is on this storm system? I assume it’ll be windy and rainy for a few days and then should hopefully get back to beautiful unless of course something changes? Looking at the forecast now it looks like cloudy and rainy everyday but I’ve learned not to trust weather reports too much on small islands.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Why is the nickname Caymans disliked?

Not meaning to bring offence or anything, just wondering why Caymanians don’t like the term “Caymans” for their islands? I live in the Falklands and we call it “Falklands” a lot so I’ve gotten into a a habit. Just wondering

US dollars, Credit Card or KYD?

Any recs on what to bring ? My card has no international fees so I'm good there. I just know some countries tack on extra if you use a card sometimes, or will give a price break if you use local currency.

Help?

Do you think those Camana bay and government shuttles have a public transport license?

I have an idea but I have no one to ask about this stuff nor who to go to, any help would be appreciated. But do you think the Camana Bay shuttle or the GAB shuttle have public transport licenses? I’m assuming so but you never know.

Rain on our parade?

Hi folks,

We are visiting during the second week of November and are seeing forecasts with high percentages (60-70%) for rain/thunderstorms/high winds pretty much all week. Does weather like that typically last all day, or is it usually just storm for a bit in the afternoon or something and then blow over? We were hoping for plentiful beach and hiking time, but want to temper expectations or at least pack accordingly. Thanks!

Car insurance claim

My car was written off, and the at fault party’s insurance gave me a lowball offer that I couldn’t even afford an older model of my car.

Anybody over here who’s had a similar experience? And how do I deal with this moving forward?

Stingray City Recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a charter (preferably private) to stingray city. I am thinking private would be better since we have a 19 month old and if he’s not enjoying himself I’d prefer not to ruin anyone else’s trip. Since it could be short lived I’m hoping for a reasonably priced option. TIA

Visiting home for Christmas after being gone for 5 years - need recommendations

I haven't been back in Cayman for over 5 years, having last been back in Summer of 2019 when I was visiting/working some internships for the two months I was there between university semesters. Then COVID happened, and then my own immigration process up here in the USA which meant I was unable to leave. Now that I'm able to travel, I'll be able to come home to Cayman this coming Christmas with my spouse and I'll be there for just over 2 weeks. I was hoping to get recommendations on things to do while I was there - of course there's a handful of typical touristy things I want to do with my spouse to show them the island, but I hear the island has changed a lot since I was last there. What are some things I could do to show them Cayman?

So far my list includes:

  1. Diving
  2. Beaches (Governor's, SMB, and/or Smith's Cove)
  3. Botanical Garden
  4. Turtle Farm
  5. Blowholes
  6. Caibo/Rum Point
  7. Crystal Caves
  8. Stingray City/Sandbar
  9. Stroll thru town/waterfront
  10. Pedro Castle

Also considering a possible visit to the Brac, and will most likely stop by Hell early on since my mother lives near Birch Tree Hill. Wouldn't mind some recommendations for any local food spots that are still around as well (aside from A La Kebab - I plan on making that my first stop right out of the the airport lmao).

Importing Car from Japan

Hi all,

I’m thinking of getting purchasing a car from Japan and have looked at a couple of companies that advertise on FB. Has anyone got any experience of doing this, specifically using LVS Auto Traders (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088321036286&name=xhp_nt__fblite__profile__tab_bar&profile_tab_item_selected=about)?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Mastic Trail Parking/Taxi Question

Hello all,

I will be visiting Grand Cayman for the first time in 2 weeks and would like to hike the Mastic trail. I will be renting a car so my plan is to park it at either the north or south trailhead and get a taxi back to the car after hiking the trail in one direction. Is this feasible? Is there parking at either trailhead? Is it safe to leave the car there? Will I be able to get a taxi at the other end? Should I go north to south or south to north? Thanks for your help.

RSM Cayman

I’ve recently seen a Senior Associate position open up within RSM Cayman’s Captive Insurance unit. It’s something I’m considering applying for, however, what is their presence like within Cayman? Additionally, they seem to have good work-life balance, is this something I can look forward to? Or will the work hours be similar to B4?

Thanks.

Childcare costs - relocating with $100k USD job offer

My wife and I have both received job offers, and we're due to relocate to the Cayman Islands in February.

Based on what I've read in this group, it seems like a $100k USD salary alone might not be enough to sustain a family of 3 with a good quality of life. However, our combined salaries come to about $170,000 USD.

I have two questions:

  1. What is the cost of childcare?
  2. If you're frugal, is a $100k salary really that bad?

Since both my wife and I will be working, we'll be looking for assistance with childcare. Any insights are appreciated!

Where to appeal to get this fence removed or replaced?

This small fence at the intersection of Shedden Rd and harbour dr (Cayman Island National museum) blocks the incoming traffic view for low floor car drivers waiting to turn into Church St. You can only see incoming vehicle when it passes this fence.

Not sure what the purpose of it is given the open space around it.

Is there a way to appeal to anyone to get this removed or replaced?

In case this isn't familiar, it's a 6ftx3.5ft wooden fence.

ETFs or Low-Cost Index Funds for Cayman Residents Seeking

I’m a resident of the Cayman Islands looking to invest in ETFs or low-cost index funds. I’m curious about what options are available to us here. Specifically:

•	Are there any US or UK investment platforms that allow Cayman residents to open accounts?

•	What platforms or brokers (local or international) do you use for investing in ETFs or index funds?

Restaurant Picks: Feedback/Advice - First Time Visiting

My husband & I are visiting for 6 days from the end of this month into early November for the first time for our anniversary and I look forward to food above all else when I'm traveling lol. Here are the restaurants I have on my radar so far:

  • Macabuca
  • Czech in Grill
  • Taikun
  • Calypso Grill
  • Casanova
  • Coconut Joe's
  • Tukka

Any we should pass on or other recommendations? A fun atmosphere or good views are preferred. Bonus if they offer blackened/jerk style or have Mahi Mahi on the menu.

Also I know (from what I've read at least) that the time of year we're coming isn't as crowded, but is it typically busy enough where we should make reservations anywhere just in case?

Snorkeling questions TIA!

I'm wondering if it's better to do a boat tour or rent a car and snorkel from shore. This will be our first time to GC. We're on a ship and in port from 11-7. Snorkeling is our thing and the main reason we took up cruising... to see a bunch of islands and decide where we want to come for longer. It seems there are a lot of places to snorkel from shore, but if the reefs are in better shape off shore, we'd probably prefer a boat tour. So.... Ocean Frontiers 3 stop snorkel or rent a car for the day? Thanks!
