front porch forum - concerns / censorship

I want to hear others' takes on a situation I had involving Front Porch Forum over the weekend.

As all of us are aware, many school budgets took a couple voting rounds to ultimately pass. While I know a few districts are still figuring things out, my school district's budget finally passed, by a comfortable margin, after voting last week.

In reading an FPF update email for my community on Friday, a fellow townsperson posted a very sarcastically toned statement that pretty much sounded like something we may see over here. Summary: those of us who voted "Yes" on the budget are personally responsible for forcing more Vermonters out of their long time homes, and have made it harder for us all to live here.

Well, no shit. We don't like that costs are going up either.

And given the individuals rude tone, I made a submission calling them out for this, and then presenting points as to why it was time the budget passed.

Saturday afternoon - I get an email from FPF Admin. My post was flagged and held for moderation, and specifically I was directed to edit my post in such a way that removed the call out for the other person being rude/sarcastic.

I replied back within seconds, telling the FPF mod team "Morgan," that I would not make any changes, and if they were going to allow a sarcastically toned post slandering other voters, we are allowed to call them out on this and respond in kind.

And it wasn't like I said that the other person was r******d, or even she was an idiot or wrong. I simply said "It was unacceptably rude, and similar to what may be seen on Reddit." Sorry, it's true.

"Morgan" replied back about an hour later, with all sorts of condescending bullshit..."that it's not OK to launch a directed attack at any one poster or person," "we stand by both our decision to not publish your response, and publish the other persons post. It was a judgment call, which not everyone will agree with, but we're going to leave the conversation here and move on.." Which I took as blatant censorship.

I replied to Morgan later that evening basically saying that FPF has shown its true colors, and that it was a bullshit decision, and then deleted my account. Also, fuck you for your condescending tone.

If someone is going to accuse me of driving other Vermonters out of their homes, but know that they have safe harbor to do so while anyone criticizing that position is considered out of line, Front Porch Forum can fuck itself, and I will be content remaining out of touch on neighborhood affairs, I guess.

The 2025 Real ID deadline for new licenses is really real this time, DHS says

Most Vermonters already have a Real ID compliant license. If you have a CDL or an EDL, it is Real ID compliant by default. If you have any license (or Non-Driver ID) with a star in the upper right corner, it is Real ID compliant.

No one is required to have a Real ID license. There is no extra cost to have a Real ID.

For details on Vermont Real ID visit our website here.

Crushed Stone Delivery

Hi all,

This might be a dumb question, but I figured I'd ask. I'm looking to have crushed stone delivered to my home; however, I have a wooden fence that prevents delivery to the location I'd prefer. The area I want it delivered to is right next to the road. Is there any way to have it delivered "over" the fence? I'd rather not carry each bag or use a wheelbarrow if I don't have to.

Do you remember your graduation speaker?

And if so, is there anything from the speech that's stuck with you?

Our producers on Vermont Public's talk show Vermont Edition are working on an upcoming show about graduation speeches, and so we're curious -- what do you remember from yours? What do you think young adults graduating from high school or college need to hear right now?

We'd love to read some of your responses on the air. Thanks!

P.S. We're new to r/vermont, hi hi.

Maple creemees in Waterbury?

Hi all, scoured the subreddit hoping to find specific maple creemee recs for Waterbury but was unable to find any. I’m heading up to Waterbury for a girls trip and have only had maple creemees in Burlington but was hoping to find some closer to where we are staying. Does anyone have any maple creemee recs for Waterbury or surrounding areas? I saw Cold Hollow Cider Mill had them in the past, does anyone know if they have them currently? Any help is appreciated! :)

Local HVAC installers

Hey there! Living in Williston and looking at replacing our furnace/boiler.

Got a few quotes and I really like the vibe I got from Peak Mechanical and Vermont Energy in Williston.

I’m going basically off of Google Reviews only, but wondering if anyone has had a good or bad experience with either of these companies?

Vermont drivers school for teens - help request

Can someone tell me straight up the skinny on Vermont Drivers Ed for teens?

Unfortunately my teen did not get in to drivers Ed with school- and now we are navigating through various summer class options.

It seems they all have a very strict attendance policy. Like you can’t miss any classes-ever. Finding 6 weeks in a row to complete this is an extreme challenge, even with online options due to travel and summer programs.

Anyone find a 1 or 2 week compressed class? Any locations that allow you to make up missed classes?

Signed, Tired chauffeur

Adult summer lacrosse or soccer leagues in eastern VT?

I just moved to the Lebanon/Enfield area of new hampshire and am looking for an adult summer lacrosse league. I would do soccer too as I've played some pickup, but would prefer lacrosse.

Does anyone know of anything in the area? All I've been able to find is either Manchester or Burlington and I'd rather not drive that far on a weekly basis.

Bear surprise

Woke up at 4am to the sound of thumping and rummaging.

We were greeted by a very large black bear standing up with its paws up against our living room window (looking in). Scared the shit out of us. Wish I had a photo but all we got was a dark video of one walking by a window.

There was a baby bear up on the deck walking around and a third that we couldn't see much of.

We didn't want to knock on the windows so I pressed the car alarm button on my keys and that spooked them away.

Wide awake, I was thinking about anything I might've done that could have triggered them to show up like that. We laid some grass seed down because we had construction work done recently. We also laid down a lot of new mulch which has a fragrance for a few days.

I was also wondering if I should get some kind of motion-sensored alarm sound thing to spook them but I wouldn't want it to annoy our neighbor.

Curious if you do anything or just let them be?

Fast-moving rivers for kayaking in Northeastern VT vicinity?

Looking for rivers moving fast enough so that paddling isn’t necessary to move down-river. Any suggestions within an hour or so of Burlington would be much appreciated!

Let's talk about 'new gun laws'

Every year I see the same legislators proposing the same ridiculous gun bills and people get all excited and say are "common sense."

You know what the common theme is on all these Vermont gun control bills? They don't solve any problems with criminals. Seriously. Who do they target? Regular people.

Fun fact, In Vermont felons are not barred at the state level from owning guns unless their felony is one of a few on a list (eg burglary is ok but burglary of an occupied dwelling is a gun prohibition). And if they get caught with a gun it's only a misdemeanor.

Why do I have to take a firearm to an FFL for a transfer to my neighbor I've known for 15 years if the state won't even prosecute some felon with a gun? Why can't I have a standard size magazine for my firearms but somebody who has a prior Lewd or lascivious felony conviction can own a gun and be in compliance with state laws?

How about we get real here and go after actual criminals? Make all gun possession by ALL felons to be a felony with significant jail time. Then we can forget these ridiculous laws chipping away at the rights of normal tax players.

It's not hard.

Possibly moving interracial couple

As the title suggests, myself and my fiancé are considering moving to Vermont from Florida. He’s half Chinese and half white while I myself am just white. I worry about the possibility of racism against him in his day to day life , that’s not something that happens (against him at the very least) here in Florida. Are there other Asian individuals here who may be able to share a bit of their experiences living in Vermont? If so, I would be very grateful to hear from you! Thank you!

Edit: I want to thank everyone here for their responses that were helpful and shared their experiences! It was very reassuring but also very eye opening to get a better idea of what moving there could entail. Thank you!

As weird as it sounds. My son’s girlfriend would like to do yoga with baby goats for her birthday. Is that a thing somewhere in Vermont?
