Congrats to Wolf Tree in WRJ!

They’re a 2025 James Beard Award semi-finalist for outstanding bar. Well deserved! Great drinks and nibbles, nice people, nice atmosphere. Lucky to have them in our neighborhood. Best of luck!

Taijiquan/T’ai Chi seminar for martial artists and other students of the human body

Hi UVers,

Upper Valley Martial Arts will be putting on a seminar teaching the basic internal mechanisms that power Taijiquan/T’ai Chi as an actual martial art. All experience levels ages 16+ are welcome! You don’t necessarily need a background in Taijiquan or any other martial art. We’ll just be exploring an alternative way the body can engage with force that doesn’t rely on muscular contraction, so if that sounds interesting to you, you should join us!

Taijiquan is an internal martial art that has grown to global popularity in the last two hundred years as an accessible form of exercise for the elderly and infirm. Part of the tradeoff of this spread has been extensive dilution of the standards that originally made it an effective combat art. Many people may train Taijiquan for years without ever figuring out how it’s supposed to work as a martial art. Upper Valley Martial Arts seeks to preserve and transmit authentic internal gong fu by demystifying the training process and bringing out actual internal skill in students. Often alluded to by Taijiquan schools but rarely actually delivered, internal power is the critical litmus test of correct practice. We’re very proud to offer genuine training in this fascinating art!

This seminar, Internal Mechanics of Taijiquan, introduces the basic mechanisms inside the body responsible for generating internal force. Using a range of teaching methodologies from referencing classical theory to visual illustrations and physical models to practical demonstrations to solo and partner exercises, you will not only be able to experience internal power for yourself, but you will be clearly shown how you can train this power into your own body. Our goal is to present the clearest and most detailed instruction you can find in the fundamental mechanics of the Taiji body.

When: February 22nd, 2025 | 1:00pm-4:00pm

Where: Okinawan Karate Academy | 351 Miracle Mile, Lebanon, NH 03766

Cost: $60 at the door, or $55 if registering before February 21st

Contact Upper Valley Martial Arts at UVWushuguan@gmail.com for questions or to register

Sad about Lalo’s in west leb closing

They easily have the best tacos I've had in New England, really bummed that they're closing up shop. They always seemed pretty busy, I went recently and they had sold out for the day so not sure what happen but I hope the owners are doing okay and wish them the best.

Geography quiz time…

What’s the snow covered mountain you can see from Rt10 in Hanover by Kendal and then again just before you get to the boat launch?

It appears when you’re heading north…

Best weather app for Upper Valley?

I have noticed that the Apple weather app never has accurate forecasts and current weather is almost never accurate.

Wunderground used to be pretty good, but it seems like it’s falling off.

What do you all think is the most accurate these days?

Lodging for a family reunion in July

We're hosting a family reunion in July with 25+ guests from out of town. Any suggestions for places that would be able to accommodate that many people? We're looking for something other than the regular hotel chains.

Fun things to do around here between Dec. 26th-Jan. 1st?

I would go skiing or ice skating but there doesn’t seem to be enough snow or cold enough yet.

Any other ideas of fun adult stuff to do around here?

What are the large white signs posted along the edge of the CT river?

Driving south on 12A the other day, I noticed a couple guys hanging up signs along 12A just south of the dump in West Lebanon.

As I was driving to Mac's Maple on River Rd. I also noticed groups of people along the road/river bank staring across the river at the the various signs.

My best guess would be eagle nest markers? But, I'm not sure.

Korean teacher

Hi, I’m looking for a Korean tutor in the Lebanon/hanover area! I’m a highschool student, I’ve already emailed the Dartmouth KSA and the Lebanon Korean Presbyterian church but no luck. I’ve had an online tutor but think I’d benefit more from an in-person tutor. Any help would be appreciated even if it might not be super close to Hanover or leb.(30 min drive is okay).

Lost Photos of Deceased Family Members

Posting from r/FoundPhotos on recommendation from someone there.

Back in 2018, I believe, my parents had a storage unit in the Upper Valley Region of NH that we were supposed to go back and get after moving a few years prior. Unfortunately, due to money troubles, they weren't able to keep paying on the storage unit and we lost everything in it. I don't mind losing most things in it, but what hurt the most was losing our physical family photos that were stored in a cream colored box with light pink flowers on it. I also lost my baby clothes, but I won't put much stock in finding those again. I wasn't very old back then, and never forgave my parents for letting go of our stuff after telling us to leave a lot of it there because "it's okay, we'll come back to get it soon". If I could recover even just the photos, I feel like I would regain a sense of my past, especially since some of the photos are of relatives that I don't have any photos of myself.

My dad said a year or two ago that the storage place we used to store our stuff in shut down since then. I can't ask my mom, either, because she passed away last year. I know they must have auctioned off our stuff. I'm just not sure how to find it, but please, if anyone can help me, that would be wonderful. I miss my family's photos dearly, and especially ones of my mom when she was younger.

Stories about all things New England strange!

Hey Upper Valey!

I started a new weekly podcast that dropped last week on all things New England strange called Weirder After Dark! We are three cousins, born and raised in the North East (we all currently live in NH), who mix humor with facts to take you on a journey into all things New England weird—our current episode, which dropped 12/3 is on The Berkshire Abductions! An incident where 200+ people claim to have seen a UFO and 3 people claim to have been abducted on the same night!

On Tuesday, we drop a new episode on the Lake Winnipesaukee Mystery Stone!

To give you a taste of what else we offer, we have future episodes on the Jane Toppan (Serial Killer from MA), Bridgewater Triangle, Smuttynose murders, Coos County Wood Devils, The Kennedys etc! We also already dropped an episode on the Haunted S.K. Peirce Mansion from Gardner, Ma!

We'd love to hear ideas on other local New England mysteries for us to go after! If you know/have anything spooky, share it here! Feel free to reach out if you've had any strange experiences with the paranormal, aliens, weird events, unknown artifacts, cryptids, or urban legends!

Also, if this sounds like your vibe, feel free to follow/subscribe/listen on the following platforms:

Instagram - Weirder After Dark

Link Tree to Podcast Sites (This will bring you right to the pod where you can subscribe/follow). A listen and feedback would mean the world to this new podcaster!

Keep it weird :D

HanoverPlace Apartments

Has anyone rented at HanoverPlace apartments? Other than being small, and expensive, does anyone have any thoughts?

My lease is up soon and I’ve started to browse.

(This building was the Elements hotel that blew up a few years ago)

Moving from Florida

We have been spending the weekend throughout the area to get a feel for things. What are the best places to live for young families? We are late 30’s and have an 11 year old daughter and 7 year old son. Would love somewhere that really feels like a community with others raising their families.

Looking for gas stove repair

We have a Lopi gas stove that was purchased from Esersky's hardware in Claremont, which is no longer in business. I've spoken to the stove place in WRJ who doesn't service Lopi stoves and with the stove place in Lebanon near exit 17 and they won't service it because it wasn't purchased from them. I also called our gas provider and they don't work on these stoves either.

Can anyone suggest another place that might work on this? I just want to have it checked, out, cleaned up inside, adjusted if needed, and have a replacement glass gasket installed.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Looking for private driving instructor around Lebanon, NH

I'm looking for a private instructor or someone who could help me practice for the roadtest and a vehicle that can be borrowed for the actual DMV road test in Concord. It seems like all the driving schools are out of reach for me as they are either impossible to get to without a car or out of state or they are all filled up until next year of August.

I'm a new resident in Lebanon, NH and just moved from a different country because of my medical job. I've alwasy relied on public transportation and have only realized the situation I put myself in. As of right now, there's no way for me to get to work on the weekends as the Advanced Transit (AT) buses don't run on weekends as early as I need it to and I'm pretty sure they don't even run on Sundays. Given that's the case, I'm currently walking about an hour for commute to work on the weekends and another hour to get back.

I've heard from the locals and coworkers telling me that I will have to get a driver's license sooner or later due to the forseeable winter as it can get pretty snowy. I guess not planning things out was a idiotic mistake on my part.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Gungdo or similar styles of archery?

Does anyone have any experience with Korean-style traditional archery or similar? I was exposed to the Korean horse bow a long time ago and always wanted to explore it more. If anyone does this kind of archery, I’d love to learn.
