I live in the Old North End by Battery Park, and last night I had a small female cat come up to my door and try to get out of the cold. She is quite friendly, yet had no collar. Took her to the vet earlier and she doesn’t have a microchip or match any of the humane society’s reports of missing cats. She is mottled black and brown/orange, with a distinctive pattern of touches of white under her chin and by her nose. The vet found flea debris on her, so she’s definitely been outside for awhile. If you know of any missing cats matching the description or similar, please shoot me a message and a picture and we can try to find her owner. Thank you!
Hi! I live on South Union and this cute white cat with orange spots kept running inside our apartment when we’d open the door. No problem getting them out, super sweet cat!
She had a black collar and air tag. Just posting to make sure she isn’t lost and trying to find her way home or anything.
We’re going to a birthday party there but I have to bring my two young children who definitely won’t be ice skating. Is there stuff to do there for people not skating? Places to sit? Food?
How is the Uber/Lyft situation there? Do they run pretty late or is it a certain time when it's nothing available?
We need to stop with meaningless feel-good statements like, "Lock them up". People like to pretend we have plenty of room to house prisoners, but the liberals just don't want to because they love crime. It is a lot easier to blame the people across the aisle than to look at the hard reality of the situation.
The actual reason is because we have nowhere to put them. If you really want to clean up the streets Vermont needs a new prison.
It costs on average $250,000 per cell to build a new medium security prison. So, if we want a prison with 500 cells it will cost ~$100,000,000. The average cost of running a prison is $45,000 per year/per prisoner. So that same prison with 500 inmates would cost ~$22,500,000 per year to run.
So, how many cells do we need based on current and future crime trends?
Where are we going to build this new prison? Obviously not in Burlington because "We hate cops", but maybe there are some more conservative towns willing to add a new prison into their mix? Rutland? The NEK maybe? Please let us know.
I suppose some other things we should consider is how hard it is to build new places in Vermont due to regulations and harsh weather. I would like to build a reasonable timeline for when it will be ready because the people footing the bill will surely want to know that construction won't drag on endlessly. It is also worth noting that this prison might just fill up too and we will be right back in the same situation if we don't also spend money to attack the root causes of crime. And it might not be politically popular to spend all this money on housing criminals instead of struggling middle class families.
Which brings us to the next question...how do we pay for this?
Hi locals! is a job market for hospitality is good there?
Anyone know when the opening day for weenies (the new hot dog joint on church st) is going to be? It said opening this fall but wondering if anyone has updates…
Trucker here seeking a good bar to watch football with good vibes
If anybody knows some college boys who have a white BMW suv, make sure they aren’t the ones I just saw running away with the “Strong Communities Make Police Obsolete” banner on Loomis st. Absolutely zero class.
Pretty sure this is the new restaurant that will be where Jrs in Williston used to be.
Hi everyone, my landlord just notified me that my rent will increase by 6% if I choose to renew. Since I work an hourly job, this increase feels quite steep, and I'm planning to negotiate with the landlord. For those of you who are renting, are you facing a rent increase too? If so, by how much? Thanks for your input!
I know everyone is sick of talking about this but I hadn’t seen anything from them in quite a while. Who is buying a buffalo chicken pizza for $65.75 after tax and automatic gratuity?
Total chaos w a car on Nash and Colchester. Anyone know what happened. BPD there for over an hour car abandoned in middle of st
That’s all. I mean. Just look at this plate. Gorgeous.
Please keep this civil. I don’t want this to turn into an argument as to whether Burlington actually has an issue or not. If you think crime is not apparent in BVT, or it’s not a big deal, or it’s no worse than it’s ever been, etc - I respect your opinion but I’d like to not focus on that.
For the sake of this thread, let’s assume that there are issues plaguing the city. The main ones are:
What do YOU think Burlington should be doing? Some people lean on increased social & community services which may have been lacking. Some people lean towards more rigid measures that are anticipated if community services aren’t working enough. At this point, the “solution” is probably somewhere in the middle and a lot of good could come from some solid discussion on that.
What I’m looking to get out of this is more viewpoints as to what will turn the city around. I have my own personal opinions, but I’m very curious to hear from other members of the community.
Again, I’d REALLY like for this not to turn into a name calling battle like it often does. Just looking for well thought out opinions and views. I’m looking to enlighten my own thoughts, and I bet it would do the same for many folks here.

Signatures will help get attention on these ideas. Written by a group of residents and meant to be practical and non-partisan. Shared with the Mayor's Office and Council president before it was posted, and includes edits and suggestions from both.
Who do you recommend?
I'd always been used to walking into OGE or REI to get fresh Darn Toughs when older ones got a hole in them. How that neither do exchanges anymore, is the only way to exchange by mail now? If so do folks know how to get that process started? Thanks!

Anyone know what's going up there?
Was just sent this, be on the look out I guess.
Heading to Burlington VT for the weekend. 29 y/o couple that love restaurants, bars and breweries. Any place we must visit while in town?!
We are also struggling to get a resy for hen of the wood. Would we be able to get a bar seat if we get there early enough? Any tips/tricks?
I recommend everyone just watch the video, but I'll call attention to a few cringeworthy tidbits from WCAX's article:
Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak says she is trying to hire a receptionist for the police department, a project manager for the overdose prevention center, make a public bathroom map, create a rapid response team inside the library, and implement improved public education on who to call in an emergency.
Really? These are the priorities / best ideas? Anyone feeling safer yet?
While residents in the audience were not offered an opportunity to speak, the mayor’s office did take questions submitted on note cards.
Brilliant idea. When you don't have good answers just avoid any tough questions!
The third public safety forum in January will focus on drug use. The mayor’s office said there are not any deliverables or a strategic plan in place for after these forums end.
Then what's the point of even having these? No plan, no deliverables, no ability for residents to speak openly - just more mind-numbing platitudes and time wasted.
Serious question: How will the city ever make progress on the public safety issue when it's governed with this level of ineptitude?
Really awesome show this Saturday night at the Bean, 8:30pm start, 21+!
Finom is co-fronted by Sima Cunningham & Macie Stewart. Their influences run vast and varied, with their most recent album being produced by Jeff Tweedy from Wilco.
They are brilliant harmonizers & musicians, mixing pop songwriting, control, chaos, & being generally freaky-deaky.
Highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for something cool to check out 😎
1 ticket for Odie Leigh tonight. Can’t make it. $25
