The Adirondack Park is the largest publicly protected area throughout the entire United States. More than 2.5 million acres of land in the Adirondack Park has been protected by New York State since 1892, creating a "forever wild" region of natural splendor and rich wildlife habitat in the Adirondack Mountains.

First, my family of 4 just moved to Corning from TX (thank god) and we want to start enjoying our new beautiful home. We want to go camping this summer in the ADK region but we are not campers- doesn't mean we're idiots, we just don't have alot of experience. We are also conscientious about waste, etc. I would like to find a good spot where there isn't a ton of ppl, where we can go swimming without fear of contamination or parasites, clean fishing, and just being alone.
Any places that might be a good stepping stone and also any good guides online about equipment and such? Ty all, happy to be here.
Hi! Heading to the Whiteface area soon with my boyfriend who is an avid snowboarder, and I am… less so. Looking for some other fun activities to do during the day while he’s on the mountain. I am an experienced hiker and will have microspikes and snowshoes with me. Any suggestions that would be a fun, tough hike but not a safety risk to do alone? I was looking at potentially snowshoeing the toll road as an option?
Other option would be some chill xc skiing in the area if anyone has some faves! Excited to explore.
Heya,
I'm planning a somewhat ambitious kayak tour for next year. I'm a bit of a novice so this is a goal that I'm planning on training most of the season for.
The route will be from Soctia (near the Jumpin Jacks) to Jennings Landing or near it. It will be on the Mohawk, Erie Canal, and the Hudson River and will require several locks to be navigated.
Is anyone here a paddler or have done something similar to the route? I'd love to ask some questions about people who have been on these waters more than I have.
And if you'd like to join me on training runs or legs of the real thing, I'd love to have some company!
Looking into doing a ADK paddling trip last weekend of April, depending on ice situation. The earliest I have been out on Lila/Lows is mid May and the BFs were definitely out. Was wondering if late April is typically a good time to get out there before the flys do.
Hey all. I am planning on doing a canoe trip with some friends this coming year. I was looking at the map of moose river plains and I noticed that it looks like you can paddle from the launch at cedar river plains to the cedar lakes. I looked on google earth and the stream connecting them looks pretty rocky. Does anyone know if you are able to paddle from the flow to the cedar lakes? Any info would be helpful!
Someone had told me about some cabin that you have to hike like 20 minutes to get to. It's near Lake Placid. It's supposed to be really nice, not a rustic cabin. Does anyone know which one this is? I should have written it down.
specifically regarding the panther gorge lean-to; it looks like this is going to be my site for multiple hikes this year to hit my 46… usually i start my weekend hikes on fridays around 2PM, presumably reaching the lean-to around 4-5PM…
hike 1 will be: elk lake to panther gorge lean-to followed by hike up haystack-Basin-Saddleback-sawteeth
hike 2 will be: elk lake to panther lean-to then hike & back to blake-colvin-nipple-dial
first question: how crowded does the panther lean-to typically get on weekends in June/July? (i have a flexible schedule and could hike in on sunday or monday if need be to avoid people & crowds, but prefer weekends…)
Next question: has anyone done blake/colvin/nippletip/dial FROM the panther lean-to? seems like a lot to bite off in a day… if yes, how is the hike overall? avg. distance in a day? anything notable or challenging to consider?
thank you!
Probably a silly question, but with the proper equipment, should we (wife and I) hire a guide to hike Cascade in mid February or ok to do it on your own?
My fiance and I plan on doing our first hike in the High Peak area. Ideally Mt. Colden. Unfortunately the place were staying at is an hour and some change drive from the lot. We'll be going end of February. Does the parking lot, primarily the loj, still fill up by 6 this time of year? I'm cool with having to wake up at 4:30, as I've done that for the Rocky Mts, but I would prefer not to. Thanks for any and all advice.
Coming up this weekend and wanted to skate on Mirror Lake with my gf. Is it solid yet and is there a place by the lake I can rent skates. Thank you
How popular is ice fishing in the Adks?
I was a camper at Camp Woodsmoke in the mid to late 90's, have many fond memories. I know the camp is closed now. Does anyone know of the current status of the property? I was there around 2017 and took a boat out the to the property. Nothing had been built yet except the pylons for a new boat house. Does anyone know if that construction was ever completed or is the whole property still vacant?
Quick question about winter parking if anyone has any info.
I'm looking to park near the Putnam Pond Campground and hike out to Grizzle Ocean. I see on the map parking right on the South shore of Putnam Pond. Does anyone know if the road and parking lot are maintained in the winter?
Thanks for the help.
Planning on going to angel slide during the weekend. Anyone that’s been up there have any info on it and the current conditions? I plan on skiing it.
We are planning a trip to Lake Placid, NY for the first time in August and debating between staying at the Golden Arrow Lakeside vs. High Peaks Resort.
Right now, I am planning to book a Lakefront Room at Golden Arrow or Waterfront room at HPR in their "WaterFront Collection" building. We do not have kids, so trying to look at where we might have a bit of quieter experience. p.s. Nothing against the families visiting with kids and totally understand it's a peak season, not a deal breaker.
I am not able to make a decision based on the reviews and pictures (they all look similar) I am seeing online. Where we could get a relatively better experience, for example at renting a kayak, peaceful environment, updated rooms, views, service etc. Thanks to whoever can help out with their feedback from their recent visit. Appreciate it!
Hey y'all! I'm hoping to do a short backcountry hike (2-3 nights) in the High Peaks area, and I'm finding it super confusing to get information on 1) where the sites are and 2) if/how to book them. From my understanding many of the sites in that area are first come first serve, but I'm having trouble finding any kind of map of the site locations, which obviously makes it tricky to plan a route.
For reference, I'm from Ontario and our backcountry map and bookings systems are incredibly idiot-proof and centralized so I'm not entirely used to this, lol.
Any suggestions?
Where are some of the best places to go birding in the dacks?
I saw the below article online, and wanted to see if anyone has found these birds yet?

I'm thinking of joining a local hiking trail group this Saturday, Feb. 1 to hike Black Bear mountain. I've hiked the ADK before usually around summer and fall but never in winter time. What would one recommend for clothing and packing essentials?
