Steamdeck as a games console

I'm thinking to buy a SD but I wonder if I can use it as a game console. Meaning to hook it up to my TV and only use a controller to navigate menus and play all games. And to also allow for two player couch co op games with two controllers.

is this possible?

Do full body cases increase temperatures?

Do full body cases like the jsaux mod case or the killswitch increase the temperatures of the steam deck?

I’m trying to decide between getting a full body case and applying the get mechanism kickstand to it or just buying something like those jsaux grips which only cover the outer portion and then just buying the whole get mechanism bracket stand.

Thoughts?

TIFU by damaging my Deck

It's been a rough week. I feel like I have to get this off my chest, so thanks for indulging me. I'm a student and as a reward to myself for completing my term papers and a belated Christmas present, I decided to get myself a Steam Deck. The day after it arrived, a pipe burst in my student accommodations and my room flooded. I was moved from a room with carpet to a room with hardwood. This is important because, in the haste to get all my things to the new room, I set the SD down outside of its case, knocked it off a box, and it hit the floor.

It's 100%, unambiguously my fault. No dispute there. Thankfully, none of the internals were damaged. Every game still boots fine, but a crack under the left thumbstick prevents me from articulating it upwards. I reached out to Steam who said all the repair centers in my region are temporarily closed, but I could try repairing it myself. I reach out to a computer-savvy friend of mine, order a replacement front plate off IFixit, and decide to give it a go.

The part arrives and my friend hasn't even unzipped his tool pouch when he sees replacing the front plate is a 3-5 hour job that requires tools and expertise he does not have. From there, I try all eight electronics repair shops in town, all of which refuse to so much as look at the Deck. I can't go further out because I'm studying abroad and don't drive.

Steam got back to me yesterday and has advance quoted me 136 Euro for repairs. So I'm left with the choice of finagling returns on the front plate and shelling out more for this major purchase I've gotten to use three times, or throwing in the towel.

):

Longtime follower. First time poster. New SD taking forever during initial install.

Unboxed and began install 512G OLED (not a refurb) and it has been on this install screen for over an hour now. I don’t see anything during a quick glance of troubleshooting guide. I’ve done a power cycle but we are right back to where we started.

Any ideas?

Steam deck crashing on games

So I've been playing hades 2 on my deck, and every now and then my deck just glitches out when I pick up certain items and just glitches out so I have to restart the whole thing

I'm a bit worried because if it's just the game I'm not really worried but if it's the console than I am

Also the game is in early access so I was thinking that could be a factor

CheatEngine Help

Playing Soul Calibur with some cheat tables (offline to be clear).

Having an issue where it only works/launches with the game when the launch options for the game have the file path for the installer.

When I edit them to lead to the .exe file, it won't launch along with the game OR find the process when I start it manually (in other words SCVI won't show in the process list even though it's active).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Does Witcher game save importing work on SD?

I wanted to know if the save import feature of the Witcher games still works with steam deck while I’m still on the first game.

If someone could confirm if it works for 1 to 2 and 2 to 3, I would be very grateful.

Unknown name “NaN B”when updating

Hey everyone. I recently updated my steam deck and noticed that in the notification / recently updated section is shows a different username “NaN B” than what I assume the standard is (my username.) Is this normal? Never paid attention to it before.

Steam Deck can't connect to servers

I'm at my wit's end. I just got the Steam Deck, was excited to play some games only to find out i can't connect to the Steam servers. The internet connection is fine, i can still browse the web but it won't connect to the servers (it can connect when I use a local Circle K's Wifi though). I tried everything: Wifi power management settings, offline to reboot, switching to beta, factory reset, etc. Nothing worked. I am now stuck with a fancy looking tablet. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Has the 3.6 performance issue been fixed yet?

Since roughly 3 months ago when SteamOS updated to 3.6.19 i was getting terrible frame times and just an overall worse performance introduced with the update
3.6.20 didn't do anything either
Is it good to update now? or still just stay on 3.5.19
or is there a fix to all of this? / can we expect a fix from valve?

Soon to be new to Deck - Xbox Game Launcher on the deck and low resolution?

Hello, so i am going to be getting ym first steam deck at the end of the month for my 21st!

Now i built my first PC about 4 years ago and i have found now i am moving on through my degree and career i have less time to sit down and game at my setup so handheld gaming seems to be my best bet!

i have 2 questions that hopefully you gusy can answer! This sub does seem really helpful from what ive seen!!

Question 1: i do game at high resolution regulary, mainly for story games, on a 4k monitor with good colour accuracy, so will the steam deck oled look too low resolution or is it much better on the smaller screen?

Question 2: i own forza horizon 4 via the xbox game laucnher on my pc, and stupidly didnt buy it on steam before it was delisted, can i run Forza H4 on the deck throuh xbox games launcher?

Also if anyone has any advice on things to do when i get the deck it would be appreciated, if you ahve already watched a few videos but any more niche tips and tricks would be great! I mainly play story games, witcher, red dead, horizon stuff like this!

Thank you in advance!

Buttons and joysticks not working on startup

Lately, upon starting up my deck, the buttons and joysticks haven't been working. Restarting the deck doesn't always fix the problem, although logging out and re-logging into Steam does, for some reason. Up to date on my software updates. I've found some older posts covering a similar issue, yet to try out the solutions.

In the meantime does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong? Thanks! :)

HOWTO ( CLEAN & SAFE ) MOD MORROWIND ON STEAMDECK WITH LAST OPENWM 0.49 RC2

HI there again,

because I am on fire , I will show you a little short guide about how to mod Morrowind with openmw 0.49 in a safe and clean way , all for our beautiful Steam Deck !!

If you do not know howto cleanly install Openmw 0.49 RC2 on Steam Deck it s right here : OOhhh I want to install the last optimized version !

Desktop mod :

-1- First of all, you have to create your own custom MOD folder anywhere in your desk linux env (you can call it : mods, sauwerkrautt, myLittleDonkey, baguette, whatever ... )

From now on, you will put all unarchived mods inside it , I created 1 folder and choose to call it mods ... (yeah, the name sucks and looks provided by openwm , but it s not ... )

From now on, I will start to download all the MODS from the net , because they are just BEAUTY !

Now let s say that I am downloading the Better Bodies mod .

It s downloaded, then I double click on this archive to see which files I have inside : I have meshes and texture folder and an esp file .

All mods have texture and meshes folders , all of them ... and I want to keep track of my mods , so I will create a new sub folder ( inside my custom so called mods folder ) a new empty folder called better bodies .

better bodies

Once created , I open that empty folder then drag & drop the files from the mod archive . That s it !

Next , tell Openmw that you have a new mod to take care off by browsing into your ../mods/better bodies/ folder :

Highlighted is the main morrowind data file, and it must not be modified .

In Data Directories, when you will append your first mod, you will see 3 path , ghosted :

they are BIBLIC . Do not modify them.

Just click on Append and browse to your custom MOD directory, then select your custom mod folder .

DONE !

It s not showed above but better bodies has a little swiss army knife icon on the left meaning that we have to activate an .esm or .esp file in the Content Files tab .

And here we are and yes I just validate the better Bodies mod

Now , you can play the game with your new MOD, If it breaks the game , meeeh, quit the game, remove the mod from the lists , delete the folder from your mods folder, , relaunch and you are good to go again !

EASY PEASY, BAGUETTE & FROMAGE SQUEEZY !!!!!

The pause and resume feature is a god send

Thank you Valve for implementing a pretty robust pause and resume functionality. I love that I am able to just put the deck down for days and pick right back up from where I left it. It’s super useful to sneak in a few minutes here and there while waiting for things and I am able to complete more games thanks to it.

STEAM/••• buttons clicky mod?

Not sure if I dreamt this, but I recall a post from a couple of years ago where someone modded the menu buttons with microswitches to give them a tactile, clicky feel.

I’ve searched but come up with nothing.

Just ordered the extremerate clicky kit and figured I’d have a look at the menu buttons too. Just need to figure out which microswitches to buy.

Can anyone help?

[edit] Looks like it’s already a microswitch, albeit a different type compared to every other. What the hell was the mod I’m thinking of then? Did they replace the switches with a different type? Ugh, come on brain!

Dumb question, but can I fix how some games only display mouse/keyboard input?

I tried playing AC: Black Flah recently and it’s sowing WASD controls rather that steam controls and really messing me up. I also have an Xbox controller connected to my Deck but it doesn’t appear in any input settings within the game. This isn’t the only game this has happened with- just the one I’m hoping to get working the most lol.

If it matters- I’m still completely new to owning a steam deck. I have barely messed with any settings and generally stick to anything that can just be easily played but some games I want to try and fix if possible!
