Temperature bug and fan contol ???

Hi, I recently installed Windows 11 Pro on my wife's Steam Deck and Handheld Companion. I'm trying to set up the fan control, however, I'm noticing a temperature difference in the Hendheld Companion and Core Temp readings. In Core temp, the temperature is the real one, and in Quick Tools Overley of Handheld Companion, it is more or less twice as low. Therefore, the fans setting is not working correctly. When I set them manually to a higher value or to max, they increase, but my idea is for the graphics to be smooth and not to constantly spin at maximum. Does anyone know how to fix this bug?

Thanks!

I FINALLY figured out why I was having so much trouble with Windows 11 on Deck!

So, I originally went back to SteamOS cause I gave up trying to get this to run properly, and then I remembered Tiny11. I installed it...and nothing was different. Like, at all. WWE 2K24 still ran poorly with Shadows on. So, I decided to install Windows 11 Home as I didn't trust the links Ghost Spectre was leaving for their OS Ghost Spectre 11 and them used a powershell script from github named Win11Debloat to debloat it.

WWE 2K24 still didn't run well.

So, I maxed the CPU and GPU with the TDP at 15W. It improved, but not by much. I then remembered I didn't try the Shadow part of Sonic X Shadow Generations with the maxed CPU and GPU, aaaand it ALSO still didn't run. I decide to open the Deck Tools overlay thingy to check something, and I saw FPS and GPU Scaling wasn't set to anything. I remember someone mentioning GPU Scaling, and I THINK they said not to use it, but I don't fully remember. I decided, "Whatever. I got nothing to lose," and set it to Aspect Ratio(the FPS limit was set after this test btw).

It ran properly. No stutters, no slow downs, no nothing. I then tested WWE 2K24 with it on. It ran properly with shadows on AND the Action Camera set to 60FPS! FINALLY!!! I then tested it with a Balanced CPU and 1200mhz GPU.

Eh, not so much. A bit worse, but somewhat doable kinda.

I didn't test this yet with Game Recording or the other three games I wanted to test this with, but I will update this post when I do. Now, this begs the question. Am I gonna stick with getting a ROG Ally X, or am I gonna just put Windows on an OLED Deck?

I gotta be honest. I don't know anymore.

What I want the most in a handheld PC for gaming is for it to be strong enough for 60FPS, or at least close to it. I know, it's dumb to worry about frame rate, but when I think of PC gaming, I think of the only place certain games will actually run at 60FPS, as a lot of the time(especially in the past) games were locked to 30FPS on consoles, so having 60FPS home console games on the go compared to how the Switch games won't always hit 60 or will not be optimized well(the latter being kinda rare tbh), I'd prefer to have a clean experience. Ntm 1080p on a big screen like that is better than 800p, the screen has more frame rate or however you call it, and the Ally X even has more RAM overall.

However, knowing that I can run certain games on the Deck thanks to GPU Scaling makes me want the cheaper option, even if the only real bonus is the OLED screen. Tbf tho, OLED is a damn good screen, and one I hope to use for a number of games, namely pixel graphics games(Disney Afternoon Collection never came to Switch and I am never getting over that). My only worry, of course, is that I can possibly wear out the hardware with it maximized and maybe hurt the battery, even though I have been told before that there is no worry on doing that. I'm guessing it's cause the Deck is literally built for that.

But yeah, I finally figured out my issue. Now to check the other stuff I said I would check!

...as soon as the other games are done downloading!

Edit: It's been 2 hours, I should be sleeping, and I'm going to soon. Two of the games in Crash & Spyro still had a bit of frame rate dips, but Steam Recording still isn't working right. I'm gonna take the advice of the currently lone commenter on this post and set up Windows 10.

Move windows from usb stick back onto internal SSD

I successfully installed Windows onto a usb stick and its fully set up and running on the deck. Now I realised the stick I used is way too slow and Windows is struggling. I was wondering if there is a simple way to move windows from the stick onto the internal ssd to set up dual boot. I rather not start again from 0 since its all set up already. I don't own another computer beside the steam deck. Some help/tipps would be appreciated, thanks!

Games on Windows

Anyone else having problems playing non-Xbox games with Handheld Companion on Windows?

Every time I go to play a non-Xbox game for example, Fortnite. The controls do not work & act is if I am playing without Handheld Companion activated.

Any fix to this? Thank you.

Tell me about your experience with Windows on the Deck.

I'm having a tough time deciding between the Ally x and the Steam Deck. As u know some games require windows because of the anti-cheat issues with Linux (I need those games). If you've dual-booted Windows on your Steam Deck, please let me know how it's going. Do you think I'll be better off installing Bazzite on an Ally x or installing Windows on a Steam Deck?

Recently downloaded

Recently downloaded windows with the drivers onto my microsd. Problem is, my sd only has 118 gigs of storage on it. Would games downloaded on the internal hard drive run on steamos since I have windows on sd?

Windows 10 won't run Sonic Frontiers

I just reinstalled Windows 10 again using Steams method on their website. I installed the 6 files you they linked to the page. Everything runs fine as an OS.

However when I go to open up Sonic Frontiers, the game immediately crashes upon startup. This happens with any other game too.

I've had the solution before on a previous windows installation by installing drivers from a program called Amernime. But I don't know how to do that settup again and it was a long process.

Basically, I'm just asking if you guys have another solution. Because this apparently seems to be a problem to some other people as well.

I recently found one in my area but the guy is running windows os on it.... All the guides I found online about checking the battery health, dead pixels and analogue sticks are based on steam os... How do I properly assess a windows os deck before I commit to getting it ? And if possible could you let me know if I should check for anything else before buying.... Thanks in advance🙌

Fortnite New Update Bans Me

Been playing Fortnite for a bit now, but this new update bans me whenever I play (Specifically it says you've been kicked for VPN or cheating). I disabled SWICD and it works fine so I'm guessing Fortnite doesn't like these controller programs anymore.

Is there a replacement controller program that works for this new update? I heard Steam Deck Tools is also banning people.

UPDATE: You can add the Epic Games launcher to steam and use the controller configs from that. https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsOnDeck/s/pS5b9iWgGP The top comment from this post has a great explanation on how to add Epic as a non-steam game properly

UPDATE 2: Nevermind I guess. Steam input still kicks me out after a bit, but playing without any controller programs works fine...

UPDATE 3: Try to disable location services on Windows 11, this worked for me (I have no idea why but whatever 🤷‍♂️)

Need help! Gparted not loading

Hey folks, I'm trying to get windows on my steamdeck, but I can't seem to partition the damn thing. I try running Gparted live, but my deck is stuck on the debian copyright screen.

I tried using KDE but I can't seem to partition the home drive using that, its unresponsive when I try and change it.

I tried joining the discord for help but its telling me the invite is invalid. Please let me know if someone can give me a hand!

Keep getting kicked out of Fortnite matches every time I load in... Never happened to me before?

Hey all. So basically I took about a 3 month break playing Fortnite on my SD, so I'm not too sure if anything has changed since.

Basically what happens is, every time I start a game, it would go to "Connecting..." loading screen, then "Preparing shaders...", then I would see the battle bus like the game loaded up successfully, then 2 seconds later, it mysteriously goes back to the "Connecting..." loading screen. About 5 seconds later, it eventually kicks me back to the lobby with the following message:

"You were removed from the match due to internet lag, your IP or machine, VPN usage, or for cheating. We recommend not utilizing VPN or proxy services while attempting to play Fortnite"

Clearly, this is the anti-cheat kicking in, and I'm doing nothing of the sort of what it's saying in that message.

Was there a change made with the game that I'm not aware of? Is there a fix to this? I I've never had a problem with Fortnite since I got my SD. Kinda sucks, because I'm trying to play with an old buddy of mine.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: SD OLED with the latest drivers btw. I'm using Steam Deck Tools for only the control functions, no changes to TDP, fan control, etc. on Windows 11 Pro. Wanted to add this, just in case.

Better battery life?

Everything is set up good just the battery drains so fast when all I'm doing is tweaking settings and such not even playing games

Fan setting is to Steam os And TDP is 6W on desktop mode

Shouldn't be 1 hour and down 40 percent I don't think any advice?

Epic Games Launcher Preventing Steam Deck LCD from Turning OFF Display while Download

I've noticed that when using the "display off" feature on Windows 11 (pressing the power button to turn off the display temporarily without putting the Steam Deck to sleep), the Epic Games Launcher seems to keep the Steam Deck awake during downloads. This behaviour prevents the device from entering a low-power state, which can be inconvenient for extended download sessions. Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions or workarounds?

Setting TDP per game how?

I have steam Deck Tools installed great for controller configuration and fan control just need to figure out how to set the TDP per game

Also any tips on not having the battery dies super fast I'm guessing this is linked to TDP power consumption

Can I repartition my dual boot to allow windows more space?

So as the title says, I want to take more of my steam os memory and put it on windows instead, is it possible to do that after already partitioning space for the windows dual boot install?

Straight Windows, no dual boot

Windows on deck! I put straight windows 10 on my deck, and havent looked back. I had to reimage steam OS on two different occasions because it would black screen and get stuck on verifying installation after unplugging from dock. ( Different dock both times)
Lost all my saves, twice, the second reimage was enough for me to boot SteamOS to the curb, it worked great otherwise, but thats a pretty serious bug if I lose my 20+ hr Persona save after trying to get into it a second time and succeeding. Plus so many other saves.

I guess i just want to know your experiences with SteamOS? Are you a dual booter? What do you use on your windows to make it more handheld friendly or just generally better?

What's the best way to debloat Windoss 11?

I was told that I could "debloat" Windows 11 to make games run better, as I had a few games not run at 60FPS that I swear didn't have that issue on SteamOS and could run without needing to lower literally everything in the game settings on top of maxing out the CPU, GPU, and TDP(ex. Crash, Spyro, AEW Fight Forever, WWE 2K24).

Without resorting to a modified ISO of 11, what's the best way to debloat Windows 11 on the Deck?
