Sub Rules

  • R1: Be respectful. No directed offensive language or personal attacks are allowed. Profanity is allowed, but not if it’s directed at others. Racism, sexism, and slurs or similar remarks are not allowed in either English or Chinese, including in usernames.

  • R2: No bad faith behavior. Bad faith behavior can include combative argumentation or statements intended to disrupt others’ points of view rather than engaging with them, attempts to provoke others into being caustic, making derisive remarks that add little value, or otherwise participating in discussions to the detriment of others. Making extreme unsubstantiated claims or sharing materials that are low in substance but high in outrage may also lead to removal.

  • R3: Media policy. Memes, images, videos, gifs, and other types of media are allowed but are strictly moderated. Media regarding real life people and events should provide appropriately sourced background context or risk deletion. On a spectrum from daily life musings to cultural commentary to political soapboxing, moderation of media will tighten. Media concerning topics that have already been discussed at length will likely be deleted. See also r/ChinaMemes

  • R4: Post title policy. Posts with low-effort, editorialized, provocative, inaccurate, sensationalist, or misleading titles will be removed and may result in a ban. In addition, posts linking to news articles or other third-party content in English must match the title of the original source or will be removed.

  • R5: No reposts / One post per topic. When posting about current events or new developments, please check if there are already other submissions on the topic. We regularly delete subsequent posts about the same topic, even if they provide additional information or context. If you would like to share additional information about something that has already been posted, please do so as a comment in the original thread.

  • R6: Posts must be related to China. Content that is only tangentially or incidentally related to China will generally be deleted.

  • R7: Submit the best source format. Submissions should be of the best available source format. For example, twitter posts should be submitted as links, not as screenshots. If your post is removed for this reason, you may resubmit it after appropriately selecting a better format.

  • R8: No meta-drama or subreddit drama. References to other subreddits that tend to cause drama, or contain Reddit Content Policy violations or other issues such as hate speech or misinformation, will likely be removed. Posts about bans or removals on other subreddits are not allowed.

  • R9: Posts with “(Serious)” flair are held to higher standards.

  • R10: Daily posting limit. Please do not make more than 3 posts per 24 hour period. Posts exceeding the limit are automatically removed, and repeated violations will result in an automated ban.

  • R11: If posting in Chinese, please translate at least the post title / 规则11:如果发布中文贴子,请至少将标题翻译成英文

    Join me around China.

Hello everyone, my name is Matteo I am 23 years old from Italy. I am planning my first trip to China.

So while I was inundated with books, articles and videos about anything related to China I had an idea:

What if I found a Chinese peer who would like to go on this trip and share his life with me for a month? I immediately thought that it would not be just another vacation, but a chance to bond with a new person and a new land, an adventure in the dark, two guys visiting China and creating from 0 a small but meaningful time in our lives. And finally to be able to imprint all this on my camera and create a short film (maybe?)

A guide, a translator, a fellow traveler and a friend to whom, I would donate, in exchange for his companion, room and board for the entire period.

We could plan the trip together and find things we both like to see or go to. If you might like the idea, please write to me.

    Is this normal?

Hi, Idk if this post will be considered irrelevant, but I need advice from people who are well aware of Chinese culture. So I`m 25F and almost a month ago I met a Chinese man on a language learning app. We talked to be friends and He is 34M. We shifted to Wechat in a matter of days and I was glad to have friends since I hate making small talk, either way, one day he asked me if I would consider marrying a Chinese guy and I told him I didn`t think it was possible because idk about China much. He said I had a 'Chinese aesthetic' so it could be possible and I took it as a compliment.

He then after some days asked me if having a big age gap matters to me being in a relationship, and honestly where I come from having 8-10 years age gap is normal and that is what I told him but idk why he took it as my consent to relationship and started calling me baby, etc and I told him I don`t like that at all. He seemed like a pretty decent guy, and I think that is why I gave him a free pass which can be a mistake on my end.

The next day I woke up to his post on Wechat declaring me as his treasure and I confronted him about it, we had a big argument and he told me that there was no pressure and he just liked me and his parents consented to it and maybe I should consider him as an option if I want to get into a relationship and I told him I`m not interested at all atm and he was like okay no worries.

But like I told it started progressing really badly he would talk about marriage and having kids and I would always tell him that yes he could find a good wife in the future and plan it. But I was uncomfortable the whole time and it was creepy, 2 days ago I took the plunge and told him I didn`t like all of this and I wanted to stop talking with him since I only consider him as a friend but he has feelings in his heart for me.

Next, I knew is he cried and stopped having meals and sent me a lot of texts about it and it was my fault for being gullible so I caved in and told him to eat and maybe I would talk to him. But 10 minutes in he started talking about marriage again and I felt so guilty, I don`t anyone to fall into depression because of me. Please tell me what to do and be harshly honest if you have to, I need some help.

    Houses in China

So I was wondering as an American who has only seen videos of China why are most houses built like this and a majority live in these types of houses. Why don't they build American style suburbs, wouldn't it be better to have American style suburbs, because your closer to nature and all and with american style suburbs there is more space.

How much is the Chinese economic woes and unemployment crisis a self-manufactured problem?

Laowai here, sent to work in China for a while now and I have the following observations:

    1. Tons of phone scam here in China. My phone has been blowing up ever since some unknown company sold my phone number. Apparently I am not the only one. People are reporting getting 10, 20, 30, even hundreds of calls/texts a day.

    2. Tons of real scams here in China: any type of membership in China is potentially a scam. But what has alarmed me even more is how hospitals are also run like scams. Doctors selling you medication or giving you tests that you don't need, or even selling equipments in their office with a 3rd party contractor. Been through all this just within a few month of arriving here!

    3. Tons of fake goods here: you buy someone from online and there is a good chance it is not what it has been advertised. The interesting part is that sellers here have a way of vanishing into the thin-air. You can't even leave a bad comment. Xianyu? That's a scammer's nest.

    4. Other expats told me many school here produce fake students with fake GPAs and teachers pump out fake research. This causes all sorts of employment issues down the line.

    5. Fake food. I found lots of plastic a meal before and gave a bad review. Afterwards the owner directly called my phone and demanded that I remove the review. A coworker recently told me one of the huge reason people are not having kids in China is "having a kids in China amounts to feeding him/her poison." This is apparently some kind of Chinese adage found online.

Best part with 1 - 5, the government doesn't give a damn! The government is more powerless than a "paolu" gym owner here in China.

Personally I have stopped spending money here except for the necessities due to all this fakery, scams and trust issues. I went to the doctors recently and actually declined their treatment plan (4 days of hospital stay costing thousands of RMB for a cough) because I could smell the BS from a mile away.

I can only imagine that there are tons of people here in China (both expats and locals) who think exactly like I do. Obviously the economy will suffer because people are hesitant to spend their money.

I live and work in China, obviously I want a better China not just for me but everyone. But it seems hopeless!

I would like to know how I can do business legally in China without living there permanently. My brother and I offer football camps. Do we need to partner with a Chinese company to promote this service? What visa we need for short stay?

    What's Chinese people's view on PDiddy/Epstein scandals?

I was watching a video on youtube in Chinese about PDiddy and saw this hilarious (i thought) comment underneath.

    "在美国的资本主义,自由主义,个人主义体制下,富贵不搞点低俗享受那不是白富贵了么。爱泼斯坦,吹牛老爹这种掮客也是必不可少的。[吃瓜]"

Basically saying like "people in capitalist countries do evil stuff when they're rich"

As if rich Chinese are saints!

Does China Record Every Phone Call Made in China?

Is China currently, as of today, recording every phone call made in China? First, this is easily within the technological, financial, and ideological abilities of China. The data storage needed to do it for a year is around that of The Way Back Machine, a non-profit company dedicated to making archives of public internet sites. The cost to set up the actual recording would be more expensive than this of course, but it would easily be affordable in China’s internal security budget. And it sounds like the type of thing the regime would do. But... googling doesn’t show any suggestion that this is the case. It seems like some US agency would know about it if it were the case and leaked the message “Hey, EVERY phone call you make to China is being recorded!” at some point. Or Chinese news would have a suspiciously large number of incriminating phone calls from people out of favor with the regime. Or some IT guy would have defected and told the world about it. So ... I’m going to say that no they don’t. Which raises the question, why haven’t they started doing it yet?
