Hi Everyone!
I will be working in Shenzhen for the next 2-4 years. I live a conservative lifestyle and I expect to save money. Let’s say I save $50k in the next 4 years. How can I move that money?
I heard that you can only take $5000 in gold/cash/valuables while moving to or out of china?
I might move to the US after 4 years. Can I move money to the USA?
To avoid conversion fees, I don’t want to send money to my home country.
Preferably at a dental clinic that has English-speaking staff.
Hi, I'm wondering can I purchase the ticket in-person? would it be more expensive compared to online purchase? Also, are there tickets for seniors?
This is my third year in Shenzhen. I'm an "extroverted introvert" and I've gotten on quite well with colleagues but it'd be nice to meet people and maybe even do things in person. Frankly, it would be nice to know more people who can relate to having their lives caught up between two cultures, and generally people who share similar worldviews. Are there welcoming groups or meet-ups for awkward saps?
Edit: I was vague since I imagined WeChat groups, meet-up groups and the like, but in response to a reasonable comment here, I’ll give more information about myself.
I’m an American in my 30s, male, non-religious. It’s my third year in Shenzhen but my tenth in China. Most of my friends in China are Chinese, and most of my non-Chinese friends have either moved on or intend to; I don’t. It would be great to meet people who are comfortable living with one foot in China and the other elsewhere.
I enjoy hiking, and I go to Lianhuashan pretty much every other day since I live in Futian. I don't go to the gym, but I would like to start, so finding an accountability partner could be fun. I particularly enjoy travel, either to talk about or as something to do.
I have a nerdier side. I enjoy playing games like Civ 6, Untitled Goose Game, Crash Bandicoot, the Legend of Zelda, etc. I primarily play on PC.
Mostly, I like the idea of finding someone to have a drink or two with every so often. I don't regularly drink, but I like the environment. Coco Park is most convenient for me. I'm most familiar with Futian and Yantian, but have seldom had a reason to venture out to Nanshan, where I'm guessing a lot of you live.
Hi moving to Shenzhen soon and want to know how to best orient myself. I currently use Google Maps to look for everything from restaurants, to kids playgrounds, to nearby attractions. Does a comprehensive app like this exist or will I need to use separate apps or sites? What would you recommend and why? I appreciate any details you can provide.
Nihao. I have been away from China for several years, and I will be back to tourist visa living there for a long while very soon. I use Trip for everything, but if you have any leads on a place with a good view somewhere along the Shenzhen coast for relatively cheap, please let me know. I will just be trialling different hotels for several days at a time until I find one that is right for me for long-term, otherwise. I may drift to Zhuhai and Xiamen in time, although Shenzhen is what I am most comfortable and familiar with.
I am also very(!) open to making new friends, local or laowai. Me in brief: 38m, artist and musician, white but raised in Asia, working on a doctorate. I do not "party," so no alcohol or drugs for me, sorry for being boring in advance in this respect. I have lived on and off in Shenzhen since 2015, off in recent years, and it is a good time to be on again. I like to wander aimlessly when in Chinese cities, going nowhere in particular, enjoying architecture, lights, and feeling. I used to spend too much time in Shekou, and I will probably do so again because I am a basic bitch laowai, but also Futian and Nanshan are the kind of spaces that I gravitate towards.
Xiexie.
I am due to fly to Shenzhen from London Heathrow. I made the booking through Booking(.com) and have an E-Ticket number and details on that app. When I have looked on the Shenzhen Airlines website, I am unable to locate my booking. I called Shenzhen Airlines’ Chinese help centre, they managed to locate my booking. He told me I should get my boarding pass at the kiosk in Heathrow. I’m a bit weary of this and my inability to check-in online, has anyone got any advice for me? Thanks in advance.
Anyone know when the Huaqiangbei electronics markets open again after Chinese New Year? I went there today and everything was sadly closed.
Me and my partner (from HK) looking for an apartment with 1 or 2 bedrooms near nanshan/ qinhai/ baoan/ shekou area. Budget 5K prefer direct landlord, anyone have a lead or group can add me please, thanks
I am travelling to HK in april from Brussels. The most convenient way while checking flights now is flying direct from Brussels to Shenzhen and then by train/bus/... to HK Island.
Do I have the option to take a bus/mini-bus/taxi straight from Shenzhen airport to HK Island? Or do I better plan to take the high speed rail from Futian station?
If the first option is less convenient, do you think I will be able to book a seat on the high speed rail on the spot as soon as I have an idea which train I will make (after immigration, once i'm on metro to Futian) Maybe this high speed rail is always fully booked in advance? I'm landing in Shenzhen airport around 5AM.
I’m visiting the PRD in early June this year. I’m going to be staying in Shenzhen but I’m also going to visit Hong Kong. I was told it could take awhile to get across due to customs/border patrol. I’m going to be taking high speed rail, so how long should I be looking at? Are certain days better? Someone I know told me that it’d take like 2-3 hours because I’m a foreigner but that doesn’t sound right so I thought I’d ask here
P.S. What’s the fastest way to get to Macau? Everything seems to be like 2 hours long and requires going through Hong Kong. Do I just have to take that route? The only fast option is to spend $100 on a taxi and I’m not gonna do that.
Hi I have a flight booked from Barcelona to Osaka with Shenzhen Airlines. When booking through Lastminute.com it never asked for my middle name. Now, I wouldn't be to thoughtful of this but I seen on here somewhere that someone had their middle name missing from the flight details and they were refused check in at the airport and had to rebook at their own cost.
I have phoned the airline they said to contact the booking agent. The booking agent said I need to contact the airline and so on.
Has anyone had any experience with anything like this before especially with shenzhen airlines? Or has anyone flown with shenzhen airlines recently? Do you enter these details when checking in online the day before?
Hopefully I can put my mind at rest here!
I’m (23f) looking to start out MMA in Shenzhen soon. Does anyone know some good places to visit? Thanks
Hey everyone,
Planning a trip to Shenzhen and need help with some recommendations.
I'm looking to start a business so trying to get some inspiration. Was told Shenzhen is a good place to visit.
Here are some areas I'm looking at:
Huaqiangbei electronics market, yiwu market, dongmen shopping district, oct-loft, yishang pet market.
Things I need help with:
Is there any spots that I may have missed?
What are some things I need to watch out for? Beginner mistakes?
Fun places to go, hottest night life spots and especially food recommendations?
Best area to stay?
Is mid February a good time to visit?
Sorry I know there's a whole bunch of questions. It's my first time visiting and going on such a trip to look for inspiration. Would appreciate your advice and recommendations, thank you!
I'll be traveling with my wife and 2 kids (4 and 3 months) to HK and want to spend some time exploring China. It's the first international trip with the kids, and things are a bit daunting bc I can only speak in Cantonese and wife can't speak Chinese at all.
I'm looking for any suggestions but also some questions below too.

I know this sounds super weird. It’s not for me. My friend wants to do a YouTube video and he wants to do this so I’m just checking on you. If anyone knows the service or if there’s any Chinese guy that speaks English that wants to pretend we rented you as a friend, we can pay you lunch
I hope this never happens to my foreign friends. If you are an American citizen, visiting or living, in Shenzhen, do the following;
I hope you never have to go through this. I cannot travel or exchange currency for six weeks.
Friend wants to visit shenzen during cny (day trip) im afraid it will be super busy.
Hello everyone! I am looking for old Huawei routers Huawei B525S-65a HUAWEI B715s-23c 4G I found some on Taobao, but I want to know the source of these goods. All suppliers told me that these routers are refurbished and imported from Hong Kong. They are imported from Hong Kong and change the packaging because of shipping costs How can I know the source of these routers? I don't want a dealer. I want to know the source so that I can buy directly. Is there any supplier/website/app for refurbished Huawei routers in Hong Kong?
Hello!
I am currently working and living in Shenzhen and I will stay these day of spring festival in the city. Could you advice me activities to go during this week?
Thanks in advance!
Im a us citizen in HK rn and wanna do a shenzen day trip. I know that in the past people got Visa on arrivals at the luohu port. Is this still possible after trump? I saw many third party sites saying i can get a VOA for shenzen but having trouble finding any official chinese gov source confirming this. Also figured after trump got elected the law may have changed. If anyone can tell me if its still possible i'd really appreciate it :)
Is it also the case that the port still has some quota system?
For background, I’m 23M currently working in the biz analyst realm in the US at a smaller, but still multinational company. We have a few offices in China (but not SZ) so I’m trying to network and meet some Chinese colleagues.
I’m a Chinese American who frequently travels to China, and eventually wants to make a permanent move. I speak advanced mandarin, and my Chinese friends say I have no accent/sound native, but I personally don’t think I’m at the level where I could communicate professionally with professional lingo.
I did a language exchange in SZ a few years back, and have visited SZ a few times since then. I’m in love with the city and it’s people/vibes/environment and would love to move here in the future
For other foreigners currently living in SZ (or maybe even elsewhere in China) - what do you do for work and how did you get to where you are today? As much as I would love being a teacher, I would ideally like to continue in my field of IT/IS/data analysis/governance/etc. Kind of lost and don’t know what my best plan of action should be, besides network within my company and look into an internal transfer, though we have no offices in SZ.
Thanks so much (:
Hey everyone, I’m looking for friends in Shenzhen or group activities to join. Below is a bit of an intro.
I’m a Chinese-Canadian raised in Canada (27M). Growing up I heard no mandarin though, so I’m not too good at it, started learning recently. Conversational Chinese is generally alright for me, but I still have a ways to go with this language for sure. Used to work in the US as a hardware engineer for a few years but then fell in love with China and well next thing you know here I am in Shenzhen.
Some interests: Cooking (trying to learn Chinese dishes, but I’m pretty bad right now haha), hiking, chatting over drinks, classical music, philosophy, hockey. But I’m honestly pretty open to trying most activities and talking about any topics~
Regardless of mutual interests though, most importantly I’d love to build some friendships and get to know you more. Whether you’re a foreigner or a local, I want to hear your story and learn about you!
Feel free to reach out to me if you’re interested in meeting up. Oh and on a side note if anyone knows any groups or activities to join to meet people around here I’d love to know - I’ve seen some names of groups mentioned on other threads (board games, hiking, running, badminton?) but in some cases was not sure on specifics on how to get added to them.
Looking forward to connecting!
Rental Options Near Polytechnic University Shenzhen
Hi Everyone! I will be moving to Shenzhen with my partner. I will move in the end of March and I need to do something about my accommodation.
How should I find an apartment for rent near Shenzhen polytechnic university? I have tried ziroom app but I found limited options. Many apartments are pretty expensive and others are bad. We will be cooking at home. We need western toilet and just a nice little apartment with 1-2 bedrooms. Is it possible to find that within a budget of 4000 rmb?
Also how much do utilities cost in Shenzhen for a 40 meter square apartment? I would love an estimate.
What is the cost of milk per litre? Price of 30 regular eggs and bread?
What is the average cost of vegetables at a local shop (not supermarket)?
Is there any online shop for buying second hand stuff? I will be staying in China for 2 years maybe. I would love to get some used items like an office chair and table. I work online and my partner will be going to office. I would also need cooking equipment like an instant pot, utensils etc.
I am trying to figure out a budget so I can get an accommodation accordingly.
Hi, I have an Irish passport and will be working in Hong Kong for 9 days in March on a working visa.
I would love to take a day trip into mainland China. Is it possible to just arrive at the customs from HK without a visa and just hand over my Irish passport for entry? Is it that simple or is there some other visa needed?
Thanks !
