at 0:02. Also makes more sense when I also saw wren comment on a post here talking about how he knows a lot of people here despise of corridor lol.
I feel like 90% of what I read in this sub is “abandon ship! the industry is dying! there’s no future, time to work at McDonald’s!”
Does anyone have any positive insights? Or advice that’s not downright depressing? I’m sick of feeling like I just wasted 5 years of my time and money for a field that allegedly doesn’t exist anymore.
I understand things suck and aren’t the same as they were 5, 10, 20 years ago. But someone somewhere has to be doing okay..right?
Sincerely, a recent grad with a degree in 3D animation
I see people saying they have done freelance jobs here and there, where do you find these types of jobs?
Edit: I mean to have my own clients, not to work for a vfx company.
I've been in the industry for about 4-5 years, mostly as a low-wage overworked generalist, although I specialized in Autodesk Maya.
I did Matchmove, Rotoanim, 3D enviorment proxies, and basically anything else they threw my way.
After the whole AI shakeup and protests in Hollywood I was left jobless, I got a few freelance gigs here and there, but work is scarce.
I'm also seeing a lot of AI Video Generators popping up, the latest one being Open Source which means it's only a matter of time before some studio grabs the code and builds an in-house VFX specific AI.
My profile on LinkedIn has been on "looking for work" for almost a year now.
Bills are piling up and I can't sit on my butt all day waiting for someone to hand me a freelance job for 8$/h anymore.
I'd be happy to hear any solutions from the community. Is LinkedIn worth it right now? Should I look elsewhere?
Should I abandon VFX?
Planning to shoot my first short film and I have a shot where its someone running and jumping over a balcony thats far up.
I wanted to challenge my self as a beginner vfx artist and do something I havent done before, which is a digidouble handoff. So I was wondering if theres some info that goes more into depth of the process, like how to put a clean plate in the shot, transition to the digi double, all that stuff.
animators compers modelers rigger roto etc?
Corridor video came up on my feed, clicked because it looked somewhat interesting. Replace green screen???
I am currently in my second year as a Pipeline TD in the animation industry, and I’m incredibly passionate about building a career in technical development for animation. My dream is to one day work for a studio like Pixar or Walt Disney Animation, and I’m eager to learn as much as I can about what it takes to thrive in this role.
For those with experience in pipeline development or recruitment in animation: what advice would you offer to someone , who's in the intermediate level, on how join these two studios? Are there particular skills, experiences, or qualities that these studios value most when hiring for technical roles?
Any insights or recommendations for further growth would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to share their knowledge!
I know it sounds a bit dramatic but I see a lot of opening positions about producers, supervisors, comps, fx…what’s going on with this department? I am in uk and the pipeline is pretty covered with jobs, except for this department which has no sense to me.
Looking for a laptop that can somewhat decently run blender on 1k euro max , the cheaper the better tbh. please do leave your recommendations since im not particularly pc savy even when i went laptop browsing i couldnt tell what can actually run blender
I dont know how many times this has been asked already. BUT I’m learning blender and that’s the only software i really knew of till last week when I found out about Houdini. I’m more interested in houdini, but should i just ditch blender?!?!?
What i wanna know is will learning blender help with houdini or will i have to start from scratch? And for my skill level, probably wud say beginner. And I want to learn houdini but i have college and sm stuff on my plate.
If i have to learn houdini seperately from scratch might not continue with blender right now cuz ik it takes really long to have proper control and skill etc.
pls help 👩🏽💻
I want to start vfx (and make videos like James Lee or Corridor Crew) but I don't know what program to use that's free. I want to use something like After Effects because I've heard that is popular amongst vfx artists.
Hi everyone,
I m just trying to stack x2 sources with the same framerange on RV, and swipe to compare it.
Unfortunetly, even if the framerange is the same my stack is always unsync, from -1 frame.
-->Even If I setup the framerange on top bar of RV : ShotGrid > in the session pref > to full length
Someone an idea please how to setup a simple RV stacking please ?
I've heard many things about this topic... Some say the market will restart in 2025, while others say that nobody knows what will happen. What's your thought?
every time i try to set the floor i get this error.
pls help.
Hello, I'm tracking a shot which is more of a nodal pan shot. I'm using PfTrack 2017 for this. The shot is taken in DJI Osmo pocket 3 in 10 bit. The shot follows a car going from right to left. I need to track the shot to replace some parts of the road and the card. In the shot, where the camera pans, there's a lot of motion blur and a rolling shutter effect. I'm having a hard time tracking the fast panning part. There are 2 reasons for this.
First is the motion blur and rolling shutter and the second is almost 50% of the shot is covered by the car which is masked out of tracking.
I have already tried to eliminate lens distortion by photographing a distortion grid with the camera. Should I fix the rolling shutter before attempting to track?
Hello! I’m looking for some feedback on my demo reel. I’m trying to do effect work for animated shows. I have started applying, but only got a rejection letter and a lot of silence… I’m sure I’m not the only one haha, but I’d still love to know what to work on to improve my chances. Thank you in advance!! Here is my website.
I’m a Modeler from Belgium and I’m planning to work in London, since it’s very easy for me to get to London with a 1h30min train drive. The expensive part is the actual staying in a hotel or airbnb. Since most good hotels are around 100£ per night, and an apartment is easily 2000£ a month, then how do you even live with the money you have left? Am I overlooking something obvious or? Let’s say I make 3000£ a month as a entry level (I think this is reasonable?) then I only have 1000£ left, just for staying there, and also the taxes and everything on top of this. How do people do this?
Are you guys seeing 10 comp job post every time you Login on Linkedin? Are you seeing the momentum in comp job postings.
Hi,
I am wondering how character creation texturing/detailing of characters is handled in professional VFX environments.
Imagine you have a realistic or semi realistic hero humanoid character in a high budget animated movie. Throughout the 90 min runtime the character will be viewed from any number of distances, from super far away, to super intimate facial close ups and even something like eye a close up detail of their twitching eye or something.
My question is - in modern productions, are multiple LODs in textures made for these characters, or is just one ultra high res textured character created for the close ups and then the renderer is left to optimize the farther shots as required?
Foundry is winding it down: https://www.foundry.com/news-and-awards/foundry-winds-down-modo-development
My fave Modo story was its use by ILM's John Knoll, who was a fan of the tool, including for a Death Star reconstruction 'hobby' project around the time of 'Rogue One'.

Hello,
I’ve applied for several compositing positions but unfortunately, I’ve been turned down for all of them.
I will link my demoreel below and with it could you list all the reasons and the areas that might not align with recruiters' expectation. I'm always striving to improve, and your insights would be incredibly valuable to me. (no need to sugarcoat) I know some areas i need to work on but i'm sure there are some other net picky stuff i can't see due to my level (junior) !
Here is my demoreel : hugobertrandcompositing.com
Thank you very much!
Hello friends. I will collect a system for CPU render farm. The programs to be used are 3DS Max and corona renderer. There will be more than one case in this system. I will use these cases by connecting them together.
I need your help for system recommendation on this subject. “I am open to changing all the parts.” I want to build the most optimal system. I don't want to allocate budget for unnecessary parts, instead I think to allocate it to the necessary parts. I created a system in my own head. I will specify it below. We can go through it and make changes. I would be very grateful if you could help me.
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (tray)
Motherboard: ASUS Prime B650M-A II.
RAM: Kingston Fury Beast 64 GB (2x32) 5200MHz (KF552C36BBEK2/64) DDR5.
M.2 SSD: WD SN530 256GB or Samsung MZ-VLQ2560 250GB.
Cooling: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280.
PSU: Corsair RM750e or MSI MAG A750GL.
Case: Dark Guardian Pro (I'm closer to this one) or MSI MAG Forge 100M.
GPU: ASUS GT1030 (don't know if it's needed)
Current unit cost of this system: 1220$ (price in my country)
Note: If I make the RAM 4 slots 128 GB in the future, will it support it? Is it necessary to replace the processor with a 7950x3D (I have a brand new 7950X.) Will I have compatibility problems, are AMD parts suitable for the system?
What would be better to change in this system? Or is there a need to change anything? Or are there any unnecessary parts? After all, this system will not be used by a person with a monitor.
I graduated recently and am currently a full-time runner at a great studio in the UK. I’m passionate about compositing and eager to build my career in advertising, but I’m concerned about its long-term stability. With industry changes like AI, outsourcing, and strikes, I worry about how secure this path is and what would happen if the landscape shifts, potentially forcing me to switch careers in the future. As someone who’s career-driven and thinking about long-term stability, I want to make sure I’m making the right choice as I want to settle down with a house, kids etc at some point.
For anybody looking for a job, Framestore has short contracts open for animators and compositors. Posted on LinkedIn and their website. Check it out.
