I won't expose my surprising ignorance on this matter...but what do we all think the tariffs will do to motion picture and episodic production and post-production?
Since Disney bought Lucasfilm, they've been using light up props for lightsabers in their movies and shows.
And for that I have a question regarding ignition shots:
How do they paint out the plastic prop blade so only the lightsaber blade is visible?
Here's an example: https://youtu.be/wUGH_wBUQnA?si=RXvpFGAP2bixxzBa&t=13
So judging by the faces getting illuminated in a realistic way, the plastic blade prop must have been there in the raw footage.
But painting it out would be a huge pain, wouldn't it? You'd have to reconstruct parts of the background, the background being the character's faces.
Or do they have a much simpler solution? Any ideas?
I always put myself as a non-bianary lgbt person if given the option on an application, since the vfx and especially game studios seem to love that stuff. But not sure if this is still the best approach now (for US studios) in the wake of Trump killing all the dei stuff, at least in the government sector. I do hear a few companies actually doubling down on the dei stuff, albiet smaller ones.
Should I retire the rainbow bracelet during interviews? Just trying to get every edge I can get, no matter how small it may seem.
I want to work in major VFX studios like ILM as a generalist. In their job posts, minimum 3 years of work experience is required for a intermediate role, 5+ years for a senior role and 7+ years for a lead role. I know it's a competitive field but I was wondering what they are looking for in a generalist demo reel? Do they want to see all epic 3d environment shots from major sci fi blockbusters in a demo reel otherwise I won't stand a chance? I would appreciate it if anyone who landed a generalist gig or actually worked as a generalist in ILM could share some of your experiences and advice.
Anyone who works in this field, can you tell me if it's a good idea to plan to go to college for 3d animation & visual effects? What are the chances of getting a good job and what are the prospects in this niche?
I want to go to an American community college as an f-1 student, but I'm hesitant to choose a direction, out of all the options I like VFX/3D the most, but I'm not sure about a successful future and a high paying job
P.S I would like to work in America after my studies.
can anyone plz composting showreel material / footage share me plz đ
im wondering why no one is talking about this âŠ

Greetings me and my friend were wanting to start a render farm, We have the following GPU's available and were wondering if this would be sufficient to have processing frames for blender projects or what have you?
Here they are:
2x 1060 - 6gb
1x 1070ti
1x 1660 super
1x 2070
I've been looking for the source of the roughness and bump maps that Blender Guru and other youtubers used for their realistic earth renders, and I've been scouring the visible earth site and I can't find all the textures. Where can I find hi-res NASA bump and roughness maps for the earth?
Thanks
Hey everyone! I am a graphic designer who focuses on photography and filmmaking, but I want to level up my multimedia knowledge and get better filmmaking opportunities. I barely know anything about 3D animation and VFX. Would you recommend an online master's degree, an online course in VFX, or any short VFX certification?
I would appreciate it if you could write down a few schools below
Why are my Roto Shapes changing positions even after I correctly animate all frames? When I adjust one frame, it seems to affect the positions of other frames. Anyone have the solution for this?
I'm getting frustrated by adjusting again and again.
Hi I was wondering if you could some how transfer the nodes you are working on to a different object . I have 2 characters with the exact same body (exact same uvs, topology and geometry) but they have bastly different heads (like different animals for heads) I want to transfer the nodes I am working for the 1st character to the second one but only the body parts cause its is what they have in common and the texture will be the same between them. Is there a way to do this? Ideally I would need the nodes to be transfered not jsut the texture incase I want to edit the nodes a bit between characters to change details, colors, specularity etc.
EDIT: to clarify, only the body from the neck down share the same topology the head is completely different topology and uvs
Okay obviously experience in the industry has a bit to do with this, like any job. But roughly as an average, who do you say pays the best for senior artist and who pays worst for senior artitsts. From what your experienced or have heard from colleagues.

I donât see VES streaming seats available for sale this year on their site. Does anyone know if theyâll eventually be available?
Hey r/vfx folks,
Iâm a DevOps/Cloud Infra engineer by trade, but Iâve never worked in a studio. Iâve always been into rendering as a hobby (mostly real-time graphics), and lately Iâve been thinking about some open-source projects to tinker with in my free time.
Iâm trying to better understand how cloud rendering fits into VFX workflows. I figure larger studios probably have their own in-house solutions, but for smaller studios with limited resources -- or hobbyists -- what are the biggest pain points when it comes to setting up and managing cloud-based render farms?
What solutions are you currently using? Whatâs the most frustrating part of getting up and running? For example, I personally use AWS Deadline/Thinkbox, and it seemed setup was straightforward enough to get going, but Iâm curious about othersâ experiences.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
So I liked these movies, obviously I know thatâs a hot take, but I think most people would agree that the release strategy from Netflix was really weird. I understand they had to shoot scenes for both at the same time, but does anyone have any idea what the process was like? Did they wait until the initial versions were out before doing VFX for the r rated cuts
As the title says, when importing a PSB into Flame the font weight of just one layer is shifting.
Any tips or advice?
I am a producer from India, I have not worked on a lot of VFX intensive films. I am start to look at scripts that have some heavy vfx and I was wondering how one budgets for it at the prep stage of a film. Do companies/supervisors read a script, work with the director and dop and prepare a rough scope of work and give a quote or is there an other process?
I realize that accurate budgets for VFX work might be only after the company sees the footage that has been shot but is there a way to estimate costs during the prep stage itself so as to arrive at good estimate that can be included in the entire film's budget to understand the total cost of the film. Thank you.

So, i need to track a bottle and replace with a 3D object. Any advices on how to track it properly?
Hi, On Jan 13 this year, Québec opened up for applications to their PR application program for professionals working in VFX and AI.
There was supposed to be 150 spots for non French speaking applicants. However the immigration consultant I used told me that she did not succeed in uploading any applications, and no other immigration consultants she has spoken with succeeded in doing so either.
I just wanted to ask here whether there were any lucky Québec residing VFX artists in this channel who managed to get their application uploaded.
If so it would be great to know which immigration consultant you used, so my immigration lady can have a chat with him/her.
Maybe the Québec government decided to not accept any non French speaking applicants anyway.
