New twist on the new to the area question

Hi everyone, 45m returning to the county after being gone for almost 20 years. I still have family and connections in town but am looking to meet new people, I will be living in Leonardtown and like how that area has transformed since I left. I did have a few questions:

  1. Is there any place to play basketball indoors? or is anyone willing to partner with me to form a group and get a regular game going?

  2. How is Method gym in Leonardtown?

  3. Any recommendations on book clubs/tabletop gaming/trivia where I could join solo?

Thanks all!

Gas price fluctuations

Recently moved to the area and have noticed a pattern with gas prices near Gate 1. Prices seem to drop by a couple cents each day for a few weeks until they get below $3, then shoot back up by about $0.30 a gallon (as they've done today) only to start lowering again. Is this just a coincidence or is there a pattern here? Should I be making a point to refuel at a certain time so I can save a few dollars before they spike?

Best way to make friends?

My fiance and I (24F and 25M) moved to the Lexington Park area a couple months ago for work (we are both contractors) and haven't really met anyone our age yet. How do 20-somethings meet here and what do you do for fun? Thanks!

Looking for SoMD Tattoo Artists

I’m relatively new to the area and looking for a solid tattoo artist, preferably traditional/neo-traditional. I’m willing to make the trip to DC, Annapolis, or maybe even Baltimore if the work is worth it. TIA!

Food Deals / Happy Hours

Looking for some tips on food deals or happy hours between Leonardtown and Lexington Park. For example on Mondays you can get a Harris teeter pizza for like 9 bucks.

Real Estate lawyer and zoning question

Has anyone have any experience or knowledge of a real estate lawyer in rezoning...Calvert County? Anyone have any luck or am I just stuck with a worthless piece of property I can't live on? Would love any advice on who to turn to that has experience and success, if any in doing so, and an idea of the costs.

Coyotes in Leonardtown?

I’m familiar with the fact coyotes have been documented in southern MD and I’ve seen cases of them dead as roadkill. This morning while I was exiting a building near the down town square around 6:00. To the west out towards a school I heard the unmistakable sound of yips and howls of coyotes. I lived in VA where this was a daily occurrence. Has anyone experienced this in the area or was it most likely just dogs. By my best guess it was sounding like 5 different individuals. Anyone know else’s encounters would be interesting to hear.

Are there any astronomy groups in the Lexington park area?

I've heard some places have groups where people get together with telescopes for stargazing and the such, I'm thinking of building my own telescope with my 3d printer. Figured it would be smart to see if I could try it out first before spending that time building my own

I need some help finding a concert please?

As the title says I’m looking for a concert I have to write a concert review for a concert I attended live for my music appreciation class in college. Unfortunately most of the concerts I’ve seen advertised since the semester started are all concerts in dc or around there and all are costing over $100 per ticket. I’m hoping someone knows of any upcoming concerts that are relatively cheap in southern Maryland can anyone recommend anything please? I really don’t want to fail this assignment.

Donating pillows

Is there any place in SoMD where I could donate a bunch of old pillows? I’ve been on the search for the perfect pillow for a few years as a side sleeper and I’ve bought and tried a lot of random ones that I only used once or twice. I feel bad throwing them out though and wanted to try and donate them somewhere if I could.

What is special needs education like in SOMD?

Are any of you working special needs education in SOMD at the highschool level? Any parents with experience?

I would like to find a school, either public or private, that would be best suited for my 10th grader. They're diagnosed high functioning but they are very independent and capable.

What have your experiences been with expenses? Quality of education and opportunities? Bullying in school?

I had a previous post that was deleted by the mods in which everyone recommended I move to Calvert County area. Does something like this exist there? The realtors I've spoken with have either outdated information or don't have answers.

Starlink in Calvert County and surrounding areas

It's hard trying to find information about actual speeds, I don't think there's going to be much of a speed difference regardless of where you are in Calvert. I'm looking to switch over to starlink, currently have Comcast. The price of starlink is a little bit more but if the speed and quality of service is better. I might make the switch. They do offer a 30-day trial, I might just do that and keep my Comcast during that trial.

Does anyone in southern Maryland or Calvert use or have starlink, what are your actual speeds during the day? How reliable is it?

Looking to move down for a Contractor job on base

I received a pretty decent offer (slightly above $206k/yr) for a position with a contractor out there but have had some concerns about the area in and around the base.

I would be moving from the west coast with my family (myself, wife + 2 children, 2 doggos)

I have been checking SpotCrime in pretty much every area I considered, California, Hollywood, Lexington Park, and they all seem to have significant crime listed. There was one area I was looking at that seemed nice but had several shootings surround the area. I even went as far north as Waldorf and that was even worse. I saw other threads on here saying Waldorf was fine and one posted like 14 days ago there hasn't been any shootings in months but there was one reported the beginning of last month along with a large amount of thefts, arrests, and robberies. In any case, not looking for a daily commute of 2-3 hours round trip.

The cost of living down there initially seemed the same as where I would be coming (technically costing me more but only because I have a 2020 interest rate on my current home). Now, digging deeper it seems like there's a small subset of places to actually rent out there that meet my criteria. The plan was to move out there, see if we want to stay in 6-12 months and buy a place at that time. Right now, I'm not even finding places I would be interested in and that seem to be in low (reported) crime rate areas for around $2500 a month. Anything higher just isn't realistic and most things higher I have found jump from 1500-2000sqft to 3000+ which is way too large for us.

I come from a 24/7 city and that's never been my thing so not really concerned about that. I understand the food selection out there is not so good which I took into consideration but for the money it kind of seems hard to pass up. If I have to drive 45 minutes north every few weeks for a KBBQ fix, not a big deal.

Besides that, high-speed internet is important to me. The pinned post mentions the ISPs out there suck but it looks like Breeze offers 1Gbit for $50/mo which is about $100 less than we are paying now for it. When I hear "rural internet" I think Texas and having to use satellite because there's no cable provider in the area.

Almost every thread I read references racism, is this an east coast thing or that specific region? I figured with the base there that it would be pretty diversified people and a melting pot but it seems like that might not be the case.

(For reference, I am white, I don't want my kids to grow up thinking racism is OK or the norm, which is why I brought it up. It seems several folks are on far ends of the spectrum with experiences and I thank you on both sides for your insight as it does help)

I have no plans to move up towards the beltway and the lifestyle they live up there is not something I want anyway, swapping between companies every 6-12 months during a contract change and worry about how long the next "gig" is going to be.

Temperature-wise it seems pretty mild, how much does it snow down there? Do you have to get chains/snow tires to drive around in the winter? Not sure if the area is north enough for those issues.

Thank you for your responses :)
