26m looking for friends in nyc related to music

Hi guys, im not too sure how to write this lol but I'm looking for friends who are genuinely into music production and djing. I got into producing music for about 4 months and I'm getting sorta good at it but nowhere near the best (thev have vears of experience obviously haha), but I believe in mind over matter. Ive always had a passion for music and I told myself I'm just like every human out there and I'm gonna try till I succeed. The reason I went on this whole spiel is cause I'm looking for one or two friends who have the same mindset as me. A group where we motivate each other towards one goal no matter what. A few of the things I'm looking for are :

  1. From age 24- 30 (just an age group I put, anyone above 30 is fine too lol)
  2. Someone whose a beginner/intermediate in music production (I use ableton)

(not looking for anyone experienced because it's not fair to them) 3. Who enjoys making music 4. Having humility, no ego and friendly. ( always willing to accept mistakes and learn from them) 5. Genre I like to make is mostly deep house tech/ progressive ( Swedish house mafia, Kream, John summit etc but I listen to a lot of genres) 6. Really motived and please no drugs. ( ain't no body got time for that)

Obviously we can talk more so please feel free to dm both girls and guys ( Creeps stay the fuck away and I'm being serious). We are no different from any other person out there and I'd die happily trying to do something that I love rather than having a lot of money and working for something that I hate! (just my kinda mentality). Cheers guys.

Electronica gigs

hey /r/LetsTalkElectronica I'm struggling to find good places to go and watch electronic music in the UK & Europe, especially the more esoteric hardware & noise based stuff. Any recommendations for nights or venues I should check out? Thanks!

Seeking Guidance on Smooth Electronica

(1) I am looking for the specific genre name for smooth electronica like the links below. I am a complete newb and I am having trouble articulating what exactly I like and what it is called. Will do my best. Any insight or guidance greatly appreciated.

(2) Also, seeking recommendations for artists and specific titles of works similar to the ones below. Looking for smooth, dreamy, spacey, evocative, moving, electronica. No or very little "spoken" vocals. Highly melodic and not jarring or atonal. Not overly boomy, unmelodic, hard-percussive dance. Not drone or ambient per se but some repetition is fine. More like "art electronica" with rock fusion influence but very, very, smooth. Trentemoller is my favorite so far but want more.

This is the kind of stuff I am talking about:

How do you organising your music?

It is my long time problem. What is effective way to organise your play list? In the web, on local PC, whatever. One of the problems, how to sort it. By genre, artist is not too effective - sound inside of a such genre may be to different. So house, trance, techno - says nothing about list. You may use subgenre, but just look at this - trance - > psy trance - > dark psy - > Hi tech - > psycore. And its still can be very different. And in the end of a day I don't know how to specify a genre.
The problem occurs when you have over 100gb of music and thousands of links. I create list from time to time if what I am correctly listening but I am not satisfied. :)

Favourite danceable non-single tracks?

What are your favourite dance tracks that were never released as a single? (Single b-sides are OK. Remixes are marginal :P)

Help me figure out what this is called and where I can find more of it.

So I recently started playing Overwatch, and learned that Blizzard actually made a few songs for Lucio's lore. I realy enjoy this one but I have no idea where to begin looking for more. I thought this was deep house, but it doesn't really seem similar to anything I found. Any help would be awesome.

Who are your favorite new artists on the scene?

Anyone got any new aliases or artists they want to share? I've been in sort of a rut finding new music, hoping to discover some new acts anybody has uncovered, preferably either just a year old, under 10k Soundcloud followers, or both.

/r/LetsTalkElectronica Album Discussion Thread #2 - "90s Ambient Classics"

ALBUM DISCUSSION PROMPTS AND TRANSPARENCY

The current albums are to be discussed as followed:

  • Biosphere - Substrata (All Saints Records, 1997)

  • Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (Apollo, 1992)

There was only one other response besides mine, so that's the one we're using. Be sure to be active in the next poll guys, having two responses total is not a great turnout, and is even less than the first pre-discussion! -FE

Prompt questions for the thread include:

  • How do these albums influence current artists today, many referencing Substrata and Selected Ambient Works 85-92 as some of the premier ambient albums for old and new listeners alike?

  • How did 90s ambient culturally impact electronic music, whether through raves, festivals, movements of sound, or so on?

  • How did ambient make its mark among other rising sounds at the time, most notably big beat, jungle, and some emergent techno artists?

  • Try to think of any other questions to ask yourselves concerning the artists and albums included; what mark do you believe they had, either on you personally or in the industry as a whole? Are the artists making new leaps in sound currently, or are they still grounded in their origins? Where do you believe these artists will stand in the future, and will their albums stand the test of time (or have they already)?

"It's almost impossible to put your finger on something as amorphous as ambient music. In spite of mounds of academic writing and manifestos on the subject, the genre remains as elusive and gauzy as ever. One common idea is that ambient is a description of space, or an attempt to use the shape of the sound as the foreground subject (instead of vocals, melody or classic/pop song structure). Perhaps a concise definition could be: music for liminal spaces, either real or imagined. In 2015, ambient is most often found in private settings or art-related spaces: museums, galleries, college concert halls. But once upon a time in the '90s, chill-out rooms playing ambient music at raves and electronic music festivals were common..."

-Jonny Coleman, LA Weekly (2015)

RULES

  • These discussions are planned to happen weekly. Since this is our first time initiating album discussion threads, we will have three to four days for this pre-discussion thread to stay open. The ranks of the discussions offered after the threads close will decide on the order to decide on the topics and albums chosen for that week.

  • From there, we will have three days to vote on two albums for discussion, and the rest of the week for listening. Hopefully this works out so new albums will begin to be chosen Sunday, and then discussed and listened from Wednesday onward. If there are other opinions or tips concerning the timeframe, please let me know.

  • Be sure to offer some other album discussion topics concerning genre, artists, movements, labels, and so on. It helps when topics are hard to come by or are too broad in necessity.

  • The pre-discussion thread should be utilized to narrow down album choices, propose new topics once this thread closes, and generally provide recommendations or other albums that could possible be voted for. In discussion threads, you can offer reviews, similar listening, experiences with the album, artist, or sets affiliated; just generally whatever you want related to the album honestly.

  • Try to make discussion prompts with at least twenty characters, enough to allow others to respond to your post properly!

Anyone here use IEMs (in-ear monitors)? [X-post from /r/Electronicmusic]

Hey all,

I'm looking to purchase some IEMs (in-ear monitors), which will be my first pair. I've been looking through a bunch of different models from different companies but am having trouble deciding on one. Although my musical tastes are diverse, I mostly listen to techno and minimal house. I thought I wanted a balanced and neutral output but after trying one out I felt a lack in bass. I was wondering if anyone here uses any IEMs and could recommend some that would work well with the type of music I listen to. Obviously I'm completely new to all this, and have already checked in with /r/headphones, but I thought I'd also check in with you guys to get your advice as Im sure there are some audiophiles here.

Here are some models I'm considering - Earsonics SM64, Mee Pinnacle P1, Shure SE535s, Heir Audio 3.Ai, RHA MA750, Westone 3, and TDK BA200

Thanks!

What Have You Been Listening To? (February 21st - February 27th, 2016)

Regular discussion threads should be up by next week, sorry for the delays everybody. Along with that, official rules and outlines for weekly posts will be outlined around the same time. Currently there are no need for mod stipulations about what users should post; just that they be electronic related and spur discussion. Users are allowed to have free format as to what they post within those guidelines, but must also follow reddiquette.

So, first up, the WHYBLT threads are returning for every Sunday, and should last throughout the week, unless the users decide on a different timeframe (please, leave any comments for the topic in this thread to collate them all together). These threads should just be used to share music you've listened to in the last couple of days or weeks; any legal music platform for sharing is acceptable, and a write-up is appreciated. Last.fm 3x3s or 4x4s are welcome, but not required. The music you are listing do not explicitly have to be electronic; just share any music you've consistently listened the most, feel like you want to talk about, or want to share most with others here.

/r/LetsTalkElectronica Album Discussion Thread #1- "Los Angeles Beat Movement" (Baths, Teebs, & Nosaj Thing)

ALBUM DISCUSSION PROMPTS & TRANSPARENCY

The current albums to be discussed are as followed:

  • Baths - Cerulean (Anticon; 2010)

  • Teebs - Ardour (Brainfeeder; 2010)

  • Nosaj Thing - Drift (Alpha Pup; 2009)

We had a three way tie, even after leaving the thread up for an extra day to see if any more results would come in. Four overall responses were recorded. With the rest of the pre-discussion topics chosen for the next couple of weeks, these threads will proceed as planned starting next week: Choosing the topic Sunday through Tuesday, and opening album discussion Wednesday through Saturday. Other discussion and weekly threads are still being debated, so we'll see how popular this thread gets for measure of how to proceed with next couple of ideas planned for the subreddit. Let's get some activity going everybody, there are over 700 subscribers, and only a couple of responses in the last couple of threads! -FE

Prompt questions for the threads include:

  • What did the artists do in terms of sound and marketing to make their mark in the LA Beat Movement?

  • How did the labels of this period help curate sound and encourage other artists to sign?

  • How did this movement help propagate later movements in sound, or aid in cooperating with other upandcoming artists at the time to mature their sound? (i.e. Nosaj Thing producing for Chance the Rapper and Kid Cudi).

"Los Angeles has always been a breeding ground for progressive artists, and in the late 2000s, experimental forms of hip-hop took root. These artists produced styles ranging from maximalist beat structures with heavy glitch influences, vacant and claustrophobic synths with heavily modified lo-fi samples, or producing full-on pop acts that bordered between two worlds. Within this little bubble of beatmakers came some of the most acclaimed and still utterly unique producers in the electronic hip-hop world, where they were most prominently curated into major labels such as Warp, Anticon, or even the well-known byproduct of this movement, Brainfeeder. The strides made by the likes of Baths, Flying Lotus, Teebs, TOKiMONSTA, and Nosaj Thing have acted as pioneering fronts for many newcomers struggling to ace that LA sound, and even influenced other major artists in the industry to adopt a new style altogether. Almost a decade later from the movement's entry point, the LA Beat Movement still holds strong weight over the sound progression in underground and mainstream electronica."

Alright guys, the first official album prediscussion thread is up. The LA Beat Movement won the most votes, followed by 90s Ambient Classics, and Ninja Tune Essentials, which will follow each week respectively. To ensure that we get some proper discussion, two albums will be chosen from the pool to be voted on by users, and two albums will be chosen in the end to add some commentary for comparison and contrast. Be sure to vote for the artists or albums you believe could provide the most discussion, we will have this thread up until Sunday for voting. For any help, contact the mods and we'll be sure to get to you! -FE

[Single Discussion] Moderat - 'Reminder'

“Reminder" is taken from Moderat’s upcoming Reminder EP to be released February 19, 2016.

The track is also featured on Moderat’s forthcoming album III out April 1, 2016 on Monkeytown/Mute. -Mute Records

This is the first unofficial singles discussion thread, and is more of a test to see how it fares. The general idea is to provide a thread whenever a new single is released, but it will not be mod-reserved, and users can post new singles to upcoming albums, and have the community provide discussion about it. There's not really a need to have heavy moderation over these type of threads, but as a rule of thumb, (at least until we finalize what new threads are coming) single discussion threads should be ordered as such:

TITLE: [Single Discussion] Artist Name -- Song Name

TEXT: Description about the single or album release date.

[Artist Name - Song Name](Streaming Source)

Personal opinions would be preferred to be placed in the comments, but can be placed in the text wall as well.

  • Please participate with at least 20 characters; "It's good" or "This is crap" does not provide great commentary or allow others to respond accordingly to a comment.
  • As stated, all users can post single discussion threads, so be sure to get a post going if you have an album single you want the subreddit to discuss about.
  • Try to post a song link that everyone can access; Spotify and Google Play are allowed, but only use them as a last resort if no other alternatives are available.
  • Futher, be respectful, you may have disagreeing opinions, but do not bash others for not feeling the same way that you do.

Look in the Casual Discussion Thread, or message the active mods for any general questions concerning the subreddit!

Casual Discussion Thread - (February 9th - February 15th, 2016)

This thread is reserved for otherwise off-topic discussions to the subreddit, questions about the subreddit, or for short, casual and brief discussions that are unsuited to the general theme of the subreddit. As it stands, the rules are very lenient for these threads, but may be subject to change or be altered in the future. This can be a place for talking about what you've done this weekend, what you're anticipating, or just other things on your mind you'd like to share!
