How is the City of Newburgh as a place to live for empty nester?

I am looking to move out of Westchester in a few months. So I started exploring Hudson Valley as possible destination. Schools are not important to me. I am looking for a town that is reasonably affordable, good food, close to nature, and dog friendly. Newburgh seemed as good as place any to explore.

My family and I had a great lunch at the Newburgh Waterfront today. Is the rest of Newburgh built up like the waterfront? The few blocks near the waterfront seemed to be industrial and urban.

Thank you in advance of any insight.

First time to Mohonk: would ubering to Testimonial Gateway Trailhead make sense?

Hi! My girlfriend and I were thinking about visiting New Paltz and Mohonk Preserve for the first time this month, but don't have a car. A couple questions:

  • How bad of an idea is it to uber to-and-from Testimonial Gateway Trailhead? Just checked the app, it seems like it's a long wait for rides but is otherwise closeby to New Paltz?
  • Are the other trails further into Mohonk Preserve dramatically better than the Foothills Loop? (Granted, those seem hard without a car)

Handcrafted Octoberfest at Dutchess County Fairgrounds?

Hello everyone!

My husband and I are traveling to Rhinebeck tomorrow to spend a few days. We can't check into our hotel until 4:00 and I was wondering if anyone has been to this festival and if it's worth it?

I know there are a lot of other festivals at orchards in the area, but we're going to try to avoid those on the weekend. We live near Albany and stop at the various orchards a couple of times a month (shout out to Golden Harvest's donuts/pies and Samascott's ice cream!), so we don't feel the need to be immersed in the apple orchard culture like some visitors.

Favorite leaf peeping routes?

Took 32 up to Cairo–23 to Windham–296 to Hunter today. Gorgeous reds and oranges up there. Coming back south 214 was very orange through the steep valley section near Devil's Tombstone but the rest of it and 28 from Phoenicia to Kingston was still very green. Might check eastern Dutchess again in a week or two.

Anyone else get some good foliage sightseeing in the Valley yet? Where are your favorite spots?

Produce/meat/gardening

Hello!

I'm curious as to how the Hudson Valley local food sources are. For instance where I am now I have a variety of farms to visit and get fresh seasonal produce, or be part of a CSA. Lots of options to buy into locally raised lamb/beef/chicken/pigs and buy shares of it to stock up. I have access to freshly made cheese and raw dairy products.

Are there these sort of options in the Hudson Valley area? What is the growing season like and what sort of crops tend to do well? Apples certainly seem to be VERY prolific.

I'm really looking for that sort of community support to access farm to table, fresh locally sourced food options.

Thanks!

Where to donate DVDs and Blu-Rays?

I have a bunch of DVD movies and BluRays that I am trying to get rid of. They seem not to want to sell well on eBay, and Beacon Reads doesn't take DVDs. Is there anywhere in the lower/mid Hudson valley that will take DVDs as a donation? I mostly want to clear them out, but I don't want to trash them if there's some place that can use them...

Tenants Rights

If you are a tenant in the Hudson Valley, you have protections and rights! They are not self-enforcing though so you need to know your rights in order to get landlords to behave. If you live in the cities of Kingston or Poughkeepsie, you could be an ETPA (rent stabilized) tenant or Good Cause Eviction tenant. Here's a really helpful website with info and if you have extra questions, call the Tenant Hotline at 845 481 0882.

Northern Lights in the Hudson Valley…

I keep seeing a few things on Facebook that the northern lights are visible here from tonight(Friday) until Sunday night, does anyone know if this is true? And if so what would be the best times to view them? I’m in Orange County NY and thinking of going to Orrs Mill road / Moodna Viaduct in Salisbury Mills between Cornwall and Washingtonville or 218 going towards West Point

Dentist in or near Pleasant Valley

Are there any dentists in or near PV that take medicaid/child health plus (NYS insurance) and attend kids? I just moved to the area and I'm having a hard time finding one for my kid around here.

Foliage peak Hudson Valley

Hi everyone, I'm going to Beacon and Cold Spring on a foliage cruise from Manhattan to see the foliage colors. What is the best weekend to see the peak of the foliage in Beacon? My cruise is on Saturday the 12th, but I think it would be a bit early or do you think the peak will be there by that weekend?

Anger management in mid-lower HV

Hey folks, I need a little guidance finding some anger management in the vague Peekskill area or more north. Not sure if my perception of AM comes from movies or what, I think I assumed there would be programs like AA that were more drop in/offered at churches or something.

Most of what I’m finding is guidance toward direct 1:1 therapy, which has been difficult for me in the past.

Appreciate any recommendations or at least some clarity on whether or not AM as I’ve described is, ya know, real.

Free campsites in the Hudson valley?

Is there any free campsites that offer fishing in the Hudson Valley? Looking to get up there this weekend before it’s too cold but don’t have a clue where to look. Id like a spot I could drive up to in my truck and just park and set up a campsite near by, and maybe be able to walk to a good fishing spot. Please lmk!

Has anyone had experience with getting a mortgage through Hudson Financial Credit Union, or any other local lenders?

I’ve had an account with ***Heritage Financial (got the name wrong in the title, they used to be called Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union) for over a decade and am currently looking into mortgage lenders.

I do my main banking with Capital One though, which doesn’t do home loans, and I would prefer going with a smaller, local chain anyways that keeps their mortgages in-house to avoid the potential headache of having a mortgage sold over and over between banks/lenders.

Trying to do my due diligence as a future first time homebuyer so any experiences you can share will be helpful!

Rough week for the striping crews?

Problems with the NYSDOT striping trucks, or just drivers oblivious to freshly applied paint?

Take a look at 9G in Red Hook between Bard and 199.

Headless Horseman or Pure Terror Scream Park?

Hey everyone,

Tis the season for haunted houses! I’ve done Headless Horseman and had a blast, but I’m wondering if anyone has been to Pure Terror in Monroe. I’ll admit from the outside it looks a little rinkydink, but I was talking to someone last week who said it’s legit.

If anyone has other recs I’m open to those too. Thanks!

Replace Central Hudson with a public utility

I'm sure if you have any dealings with Central Hudson, you'll want to give this a looksee.

There's a bill to replace Central Hudson with a public utility. Sponsors, Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha and Senator Michelle Hinchey, are looking for signatures in support. https://actionnetwork.org/letters/hvpa/?link_id=2&can_id=5026ab8fe658a108442aceac99aab937
