New Years Ideas

Looking for something to do this New Years. I went to Argos a couple of years ago and that was super fun, does anyone know of anything similar going on in the area? With music and space and some food.

Why isnt the library open sundays?

Its literally the only indoor public place people can loiter in without having to spend money. I guess if money is really a problem to keep the library open 1 extra day, the county should be able to use the work-study program considering there are 3 colleges in this county.

Affordable long-weekend Winter destinations from Ithaca?

Looking for affordable (<$160/night, $10-$25 meals, free/cheap attractions) long-weekend destinations in New England/NE during the Winter.

We tend to prefer small to medium-sized cities over large ones. We enjoy history and art museums, good food, city parks, sports, thrifting/antiquing, hiking limited to 2 hr in the winter. Not deterred by cold weather, but wet + cold is far less enjoyable.

All season tires & cables enough?

4WD Acura MDX. Will all season tires with cables on the front wheels be enough for Ithaca winter? Or should I buy snow tires or studded tires & chains? If so do some of the tire shops offer storage of your off season tires?

Bridal makeup artists for WOC

Hi all, I’m on the hunt for a makeup artist in the area that has worked with women of color and aged skin for my wedding. I’m a black bride and my mother is interested as well but I’ve had no luck finding a single person with experience. Any recommendations are welcomed!

Can I buy your frozen rhubarb?

I’m trying to make a strawberry rhubarb pie 🍓🥧for a special someone (it’s their favorite…) but obviously rhubarb is not in season right now. Anyone have some frozen rhubarb they’re willing to part ways with? If yes, DM me and let’s chat 🙏🏼

Edit: thank you beautiful strangers from the internet! Rhubarb found.

Do not go to the Yellow Deli

The Yellow Deli is the main source of funding for the Twelve Tribes cult. Besides that, they actively try to recruit people in the restaurant, and the workers there are unpaid labor consisting of cult members.

Don't believe me? Check out the documentary A&E investigates: Cults & Extreme Beliefs S1E6 about the Twelve Tribes. It is watchable on youtube. Their literature promotes racism, homophobia, and child abuse.

Do not give them money.

Come watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas" at the Library Tuesday Night

There will be a free showing of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" at the Tompkins County Public Library Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. Put on by the Comic Book Club of Ithaca.

The very first of the Peanuts TV specials, this program was a hit at its debut in 1965, with its charming animation and excellent jazzy score, and the story is a holiday perennial to this day.  Whether you would be seeing it for the first time or the 59th, and whatever holidays you celebrate, join the CBCI in watching a wondrous adaptation of Charles Schulz's amazing comic strip!

Tuesday, 12/3/2024 7-8 PM, at the Tompkins County Public Library, in the Borg-Warner Room

Does the friends of the library still have a drop slot?

Their website has donations times listed. I’m wondering if there’s still a drop slot that can be used off hours.

Email Sent to City Council Regarding City Losing Credit Rating

Dear Council – I wanted to follow up on the status of the City of Ithaca bond rating. The City of Ithaca lost its credit rating in April 2024 due to incomplete audit records. The last city audit was for fiscal year 2020, meaning that audits for 2021, 2022, and 2023 are currently outstanding. Below is a link to an Ithaca Voice article with more information.

https://ithacavoice.org/2024/04/city-of-ithaca-credit-rating-withdrawn-over-backlogged-financial-audits/

The City of Ithaca uses a financial services firm in Syracuse (Fiscal Advisors) to issue revolving annual debt used to fund operations. This year, the City has issued $43.9M in debt across three short-term bonds. Prior to losing our rating in April, the City issued two bonds at a weighted average interest rate of 3.7% (3.68%, 3.76). After we lost our rating, we issued one bond at 4.1%. While it is difficult to attribute causality to the interest rate increase, it is likely that some percentage of the change was driven by the credit rating withdrawal. If we issue the same amount of debt in 2025 as we did in 2024, but at the higher 4.1% rate, the City will incur an additional $175K in interest payments.

https://www.fiscaladvisors.com/bond-and-note-sales

Below is a table (also attached) of all Bond Anticipatory Notes over $1M issued by the Fiscal Advisors firm in 2024. Almost all of the bonds on this list have a 360 day term. Of the 30 municipalities with issued notes, the City of Ithaca is the only one without an active bond rating. Additionally, of the 37 bond issuances, the City of Ithaca had one of six notes with an average interest rate above 4.0%.

(table only attached as image for post)

I encourage the council to request an additional follow-up regarding our Credit Rating / Audits. According to the Voice article in April, the city expected to complete the 2021 audit in May 2024, but that audit is still outstanding. While I understand that COVID placed strain on our bureaucratic resources, it is concerning that we are the only municipality on the above list without a credit rating. Even a small increase in the cost of debt can have a long-term impact on City finances. I recommend the council allocate whatever funds are needed to complete the state-mandated audits (2021, 2022, 2023) and request updates on a regular basis.

I just read that Tompkins County is going to be building a homeless shelter at the current site of Found, the antique store. Does anyone know if they are moving, or closing?
