Firefly is an American space western drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship.

Like it says, if you have every run a Firefly or Serenity-Setting TTRPG Campaign, either using one of the official systems, or another system, tell me about your game! What was the premise? Who were the Big Damn Heroes of it? What notable shenanigans did they get up to? Did the game actually come to a satisfying conclusion(unlike the show lol)? I want to hear about it!
People often post about how they've told their friends
about firefly which is absolutely fantastic. But how many
strangers have you told? Try it, you'll get a lot of strange looks,
but if you get through, you've changed a life!
I like to see how many different ways I can bring it up in conversation. I drove a cab in vegas for a couple of years and usually only had a few minutes to bring it up, so it was a real challenge.
"So, you just came from the doctors, huh? I knew a doctor once.... "I noticed you have a
brown coat".... "Your kids like dinosaurs?, I knew someone who
... *sniff*...liked dinosaurs"... You're Canadian you say, my favorite actor is
Canadian..... "Murder she wrote? have you ever seen Murder HE wrote?(sometimes ya gotta come at em sideways)
Also, i've been a sci fi fan since the 70's, always looking for a new show and never heard about
FF until 2010, way too late to help when it had momentum. How
did that happen? The word didn't get out of the sci fi community
is why. Remember how happy you were when you first watched
Firefly? Don't others deserve that happiness? Won't you please help?
So open your big mouth today and save some wretched soul from their life of endless drudgery. (ok, laying it on a little thick, but you get my point)
Donate your own suggestions below and let's make this a better world(s)!
And remember,
"Our love keeps her in the air"
Any number of reasons they might have this plate. But I hope it’s because they like the show.
Does anyone know if these can be sold?
I only recently heard of this show and just binged the whole thing. I didn't realize they were such short episodes so once I started I had to finish. Absolutely loved seeing so many cameos. I haven't laughed this much in ages. Not sure if it was meant to end the way it did or got canceled too soon but definitely will watch again to see what I missed in the first watch through.
Hi gang!
I posted a few days ago about watching two reaction streamers and how much i enjoyed them. Since, then many of you have recommended other streamers and I tried a couple out. Something I realized after watching them is that there are many differences between these streamers and I thought it would be good to share my thoughts on each with a rating system. I would love to hear your ratings for the streamers you like as well. I would like to create a poll with the ratings, but don't know how to do that. It would be great to find the most popular streamer of them all when it comes to "reaction videos to Firefly" Anyway, here's my two cents:
My Favorite for Firefly specifically, is Funnylilgal.
She has great insights and comments about the show and has the great reactions you want to see when introducing someone to it. Also, the editing shows the good scenes we look forward to seeing on a re-watch. Be warned, though, you will need tissues for Serenity, she takes it really hard.

My next Favorite is Awkwardashleigh
She is a sassy hoot! She has some very entertaining takes and has a great time watching the show! Hers was really a toss-up for first place, but for different reasons. She is the most Fun of the bunch. Some of the edits don't let the scene play out and cut away a bit early, but for the most part are very good. Note that some of her reactions might be a little spicy for younger viewers.

Next up is "Popcorn in bed"
She was the first one i watched and she is the sweetest person on the list. If you're looking for someone most like Kaylee to watch the show with, she's your girl. Not as in depth with commentary, but she has the reactions you hope for and the edits have the good parts with scenes being given time to play out.

Next is "Movie night with Jacqui"
I watched a couple of episodes with her and she has some good commentary coming from a film backround. the editing is pretty good, but some scenes that are important are not included. Her reactions are good, but not great to me.

Next is "Vkunia"
I like her, but her commentary is a bit naive at times. The editing is also hit or miss as well. But her reactions are nice.

and lastly, "You, Me, and the TV."
This is a couple reacting. The husband has already seen Firefly, and sits to the side and behind his wife so you can see him anticipating a reaction when key scenes come up. I loved his expressions of glee and suspense, waiting for her reaction. Unfortunately, the edit is not as good on this one and the commentary and reactions are subdued. She just got braces, so doesn't smile much and he has to kind of pull commentary out of her after each episode.
I would love to hear your take on any of these you have watched and of course any others you all would recommend. remember, this post is so that people can find the best reactors(?) out there. I have already watched the series all the way through three times in the last week, so I really don't want to sit through half the pilot again to find out I'm not vibing with someone.
Re-watching Firefly for me is sacred act that I don't want to overdo. This is why I want to find the best of the best or at least the best for what different people want out of the experience. Please give it your best shot when describing why you recommend someone.
Thanks y'all, and remember:
"Our love keeps her in the air"
Found this great plate and plate cover in my travels today. Unfortunately, still too soon.
As far as I know, Firefly-class ships are supposed to be cargo haulers (hence the large cargo bay) and also provide a home for the crew (hence the kitchen/lounge upstairs). But I can’t for the life of me figure out why so much of the aft deck is taken up with a full infirmary, awkwardly placed and fully stocked with expensive medical equipment (not just supplies, equipment). It would make sense on a spaceship of that size to have a small infirmary out of the way somewhere, but Serenity seems to have a very oversized one for a ship with its crew requirements and intended use. Ranch homes don’t have a whole room dedicated to first-aid, for example.
My husband and I are on our honeymoon in FL, and I was checking the weather. This was Carrot’s snarky tagline today. 🥲
If you’re in the area, come see me and Serenity, my Firefly Tribute Truck, this weekend, at the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis CA. Saturday 11-8 and Sunday 12-6. Available for pictures.
So, here I am, having a week FULL of feelings and struggling to let them out. So, I sat down and turned on Firefly. I'm mid rewatch, and guess what episode was up. Yeah. The one with all the feels.
So, now I'm all stuffy and red eyed but feeling much less full of feelings.
Gawd, this episode is my favorite.
Hey, guys. Thanks for the generally positive response to my last post. You probably won't care as much for this one, but I wanted to write it anyway.
So as an Asperger's-having individual, I've noticed a lot of what River does could be seen as autistic-coded, though obviously she's not.
I've seen people be upset at River for this scene, and though Book tried to keep the peace and take a glass half full approach, I feel like more good things could have been done that obviously weren't done for the sake of maintaining the air of mystery.
If this were real life, the obvious questions would be, what is it about the tins that upsets you? What's on the labels? If you can't say it, then could you please point it out to us, please? Then maybe we can look into it ourselves, and you can help us if you start to feel up to it, but no pressure.
Obviously, they didn't write this in because then we'd be focusing a bit too much on the Blue Sun corporation, when that was meant to be a plotline for later.
But the thing is, I've seen people be upset at River, with the most extreme reactions being she's crazy, she's annoying, etc. And that does really upset me, not only as an Aspergers-having individual, but also as someone who has to go, well, wait a minute, by this point in the show, we know River's been tortured and experimented on, so what do you want from her exactly?
I don't think enough people focus on what Book, Simon and Jayne could have done in that moment. Again, plot convenience, I know. Again, River was tortured, she wasn't actually autistic, I know. But I think it's a good thing to consider if only because it helps put the scene into better perspective and because of how it could help you in real life if you ever find yourself in a situation like that.
And please don't start in with the whole 'personal responsibility' thing, have some empathy. We try our best but shit still happens. Just do what you can if you care to, and don't call us 'crazy'.
Mal may have complained about Simon getting kidnapped in broad daylight, but he never said he was going to abandon the Tams. What he did was prioritise. Book was bleeding out, so that needed to be dealt with immediately. It would have taken far too long to find the siblings and rescue them. Furthermore, Mal knew the kind of world they were on. He must have theorised that Simon was kidnapped because the townsfolk needed a doctor; therefore, he must have figured that Simon would be relatively safe for the moment and not get into further trouble, cos Mal knew Simon. He knew he'd help out.
Hell, Wash literally said that settlers sometimes abducted tradesmen, and Mal said that two people had been taken (the siblings), so they needed to focus on the third: Book.
And yet, people still seem to think Mal was being cold-hearted and ruthless.
His reasoning was also the reason why Inara insisted on Alliance medical care rather than advocate for Simon, cos she understood the situation. It wasn't because Simon scorned Kaylee back at the shop, and so she wanted revenge, it was because she knew their doctor couldn't be rescued yet.
Jayne was the only one being an arse about it by stealing Simon's things, but he still came through in the end and returned it all to him.
Firefly books I’ll start by saying I REALLY enjoyed going through these books. It wasn’t the same as seeing the actors bring the characters to life, but it did scratch that itch that was left after Serenity and I can’t wait to read the next one coming out. Anyway, here’s my thoughts on each one…
Big Damn Hero: What a great first installment! Mal gets kidnapped by a group of browncoats who accuse him of being a traitor. It actually followed 4 different narratives; 2 for Mal (one in the past and one in the present), Shepherd Book in the planet, and the crew back on Serenity having to deal with the Alliance. There was some really interesting back story for Mal, and Book’s narrative really showed how useful he could be. There were several callbacks to some of the episodes, which is always nice. And I gotta say, the story really drew me in the further Iread. Being in the book format as opposed to the screen, there was a lot of dialogue to fill in some of the space and I did find some of it to be a bit unnecessary. But that being said, I would still rate this book a 9/10
Magnificent 9: This one was very much a western with the focus on Jayne. It was fascinating because it kinda humanizes him a bit. He gets a call from an old flame to let him know he has a daughter (!!!) and Jayne’s response was kinda surprising & quite noble. As a side note, River’s talents were really becoming evident in this book, which was fitting considering this book takes place in between the last episode and the movie. Being almost entirely a western, it was a much simpler storyline and while not as gripping as the first book, I give it a 7.5/10
Generations: This book was the opposite of its predecessor, as it was entirely sci-fi. The crew embarks on a salvage mission and gets a bit more than they bargained for, finding another victim of the academy from which River came. This book was very River focused, and while not necessary to understand the movie, it gives a lot of info about what they did at academy, the “hands of blue” agents, and it’s at this point that River realizes what she could be. It was actually a bit odd how normal and conversational she was, even moreso than in Serenity. The story itself was solid but unspectacular but the background info and writing merit this one an 8.5/10
Ghost Machine: Sooooo, this one was interesting. It started strong; it was a delivery gone wrong starring our favorite interplanetary trader Badger! However, once the item in question begins invading the thoughts of the crew, it becomes almost all fantasy. We get lots of insight into crew’s desires & fears, which was cool but frankly it got tedious after a while. A large portion of the book was just the alternate lives that each crew member was imagining and they were not really pertinent to the plot. That said it did have a really great ending. I feel like it would have made a great 42 minute tv episode. 7/10
Life signs: This was a good one. Inara has been off the ship for a while, and now it’s fully explained why; she’s dying from a disease and Mal & the crew are trying to break the man who could save her out of prison. It was a great premise with very good execution. I did think that some of the things Mal did were out of character, so that knocked it down a peg. But there was lots of action and good dialogue. And we did get a preview of River’s piloting skills! 8.5/10 for this one.
Carnival: The crew finds themselves in a planet during kind of Mardis Gras type celebration, enjoying the festivities and finding work, but the work goes awry and two of the crew get kidnapped until they can make amends. The plot itself was decent but the writing was incredibly entertaining throughout. I found it had some of the best humor among the books. There was lots of Classic Wash dialogue… “Was there violence? Was there wounding? Are there wounds??” Every member of the crew had good moments in this one. This was the book that I felt was the closest so far to the actual show. For that reason I give it a 9/10
What Makes Us Mighty: In this book, Serenity makes a delivery to a planet with a charismatic leader who treats them wonderfully and seems like an all around great guy… Then it turns out he’s neglecting the rest of the planet’s people so as to let those at the core enjoy all the riches. You know… like the Alliance. A revolution is brewing and the crew need to decide which side they’re on. There some very interesting parts; you get a look at some of the companion rituals while Inara is with her client. There were lots of episode callbacks, as well as lots of inner thoughts from crew. They did a good job letting you know what everyone was thinking, and you could see that they all had good motives…well… except Jayne. It wasn’t my absolute favorite but it was a very good installment… 8/10
Coup de Grâce: Ever seen the movie True Grit? A young girl hires a mean old tracker to avenge her father’s death. That was basically this book except on a foreign planet, Mal playing the role of John Wayne/Jeff Bridges. This book was was set up a bit differently. Every other chapter was written in the first person from the perspective of the young woman whose father was killed. And therein lied the problem for me. I found the protagonist to be insufferable. She was self-righteous and irritating. Numerous times she insisted on her way, despite the crew (as well as the reader) knowing she was wrong. So the story centering on her made this book a challenge for me. There was very little focus on the crew and almost no character development. The Serenity crew just seemed like props in this one to me. And quite frankly the narrative wasn’t terribly gripping. I definitely didn’t hate it, but it was easily my least favorite of the series. 5/10 for this one.
So there ya go. Those are my thoughts. If you haven’t read the books, I do lhighly recommend checking them out if you need a Firefly infusion. I’m greatly anticipating the next book that comes out next month. Thanks for putting up with all these words!
Showing Firefly and Serenity to friends is one of the great joys in my life. Recently, a "Reactiion" streamer named "Popcorn in bed" came up on my youtube feed and she was watching Firefly for the first time. I didn't currently have any friends that haven't seen the show, so I tuned in. I found that just watching someone I don't even know experience the show for the first time is really just as satisfying as if they were my good friend. After a couple of episodes, I started to feel like I knew them and felt so happy that they were getting so much out of the show. I watched the whole season and Serenity with this young lady and it filled me with all the old feelings again. She is very sweet and kind and in her comments section, her fans have called her their very own Kaylee :)
The day after I finished the first watch, I saw another streamer's episode 1 reaction video and couldn't help myself. This lady's channel is Funnylilgal and the watch with her was just as satisfying. She has a lot of great analysis of each episode that adds to each viewing. She is just a tad more experienced and more down with the rougher aspects of the show while still gushing over the romantic parts. Be warned though, she takes if very hard during the parts of Serenity that we all hate. I cried more than I did at my original watching because I felt so bad for her. But man, it reminds me why i can't let go of this show. It gives you the feels like no other show can.
Congratulations to both these ladies( once you have experienced Serenity, you are a full fledged member of the crew) You have to know the full extent of what we have lost to fully understand what is means to be a Browncoat!
So if you want some company the next time you get the urge, try watching it with one of these ladies (or even another streamer) it's not the same as watching it in person with someone, but it's still surprisingly comforting to watch it together.
Please be aware that the free watches are edited, so you don't get every frame of the episodes, just the important parts of each. you can join patreon and watch along somehow if you have your own copy of the show. I really enjoyed the edited format as I want to watch it all the way through in the future anyway.
Just finished big damn hero. Consumed it in five sittings, munched it up whole like grandad chewing grandmas stew affer' coming home from the mine during my sunset evenins. What a ride. Slow in parts but made up for it with the book details and some real shiny details about Mals past. Personally can't wait for the book...book. Here's hoping the rest are as good. Was also fun seeing river get to be her whacky self at the stables and Id say the writer did a pretty good job getting everyone right.
If you’ve seen this posted before, I apologize, but fine folks on this sub suggested I upload a clear shot of Serenity in a bottle in lieu of a stylized photo shoot. So, her she is.
Forgive me it serenity is different enough from the show that talking about it is a violation
I had the intrusive thought reviewing Mal's conversation with the Operative, where he says "Of course you care, you're not a reaver Mal." and it got me thinking, what if he was?
They lead the reavers straight to the alliance fleet to level the playing field, but what if he actually snapped and did turn reaver? What if anything would have to happen to make that possible?
I'm thinking Mal would have to lose most, probably all of his family, especially Zoe, Kaylee and Annara, his hatred of the alliance would have to consume him to the point where reeking their destruction would be the only thing that mattered. I could honestly see him leading the reavers, not letting himself go completely, but through ruthlessness and rage I can picture him corralling them to a certain extent, steering them to attack the alliance specifically but not losing sleep over any innocents caught up in it all
I think he's capable of that
