  • No more than one meme post should be made per user, per day.
  • Spoilers in art, discussion or merchandise must be marked as such.

    Spoiler Tags

    To use the spoiler tag type the following;

    [Spoiler Title](/s "Spoiler goes here.")

    It will look like this:

    Spoiler Title

When using spoiler tags, instead of writing "spoiler title" write the number of the volume of the manga or light novel, then the number of the chapter, or the number of the anime episode and its season.

Piracy will not be tolerated. Do no mention pirated material, do not link it. This is a Reddit rule and is just common sense.

Waiting on 3 volumes to arrive in the mail, but my collection is complete (for now). I love seeing them take up half a shelf!

Until I need to start buying volumes of Wolf & Parchment after I finish reading these 😆.

Started reading volume 3 last night.

    Curiosity about the remake

Hey everybody, i am a new fan of spice and wolf. Through images and memes i knew about this series and i find out that it has the original series from 2008/2009 and a remake.

I was curious to know about the remake, how much it does change from the first two series. I decided to watch the first two first, out of curiosity, cause i read a lot about how good they are(and right now, i am loving them).

Does the remake changes the story? Follows more the manga/LN if they exists? Is it worth to watch after the old series?

Holo is a cutie pie btw :3

Finished volume 2 of the LN tonight. Spice & Wolf has absolutely risen to one of my favorite series already.

Really, I cannot wait to see how the anime adaptation remake handles the events of volume 2. This is doubly so for the events that occur later in the volume and especially chapter 6 and the epilogue.

There was an amazing amount of character development/progression throughout this book. The characters already had a great foundation because of volume 1 and Hasekura-sensei just did an incredible job building on that foundation in this volume. The increased closeness between Lawrence and Holo was practically palpable.

When Lawrence finally loses his fear of Holo’s wolf form and rides on her back I couldn’t help myself from thinking “Yes! Finally!”. The entirety of chapter 6 and the epilogue were just so unbelievably awesome and a great cap on what the earlier chapters built up.

A lot of my speculation was thrown off too which is always fun because it kept me engaged and wanting to know what happened next. For example, I was almost positive that Norah would discern Holo’s true form of her own intuition. In the end, it was only Enek that ‘sensed’ what she was and her true form was ultimately revealed of her own free will, which I did not see coming.

I’ve enjoyed the last two Afterword’s from Hasekura-sensei as well. At the end of this volume, he talks about how he invested in stocks after volume 1 and how there were some unfortunate parallels, as his stocks were trading a bit lower (which is ironic given volume 2’s event with the armor devaluation). I hope these days his stocks are doing better! 😆

I was just so content after finishing this entry in the series and I might even find myself starting volume 3 tonight.

Talk to you all Monday for the next episode of the remake that airs 🐺🍎

Help! How to get an Autograph!

So Lawrence himself (J. Michael Tatum) is coming to a convention near me soon. I would like to get my collectors edition of Spice and Wolf signed.

Small problem: I’ve never been to a convention before and am quite socially anxious. So I know where and when to lineup at the autograph tables but I have no clue what the procedure is with these things.

I assume I shake the man’s hand, say I’m a big fan of his work, put the page in front of him, hand him a writing device or he’ll use the ones he has on hand and then he’ll ask me what I want him to write, and how big?

Issue is I have no clue what I would want him to write and it feels wrong to say “whatever you want”, some ideas from here relevant to the show would be nice, and is it the default to have the signature dated or would I have to specifically request that?

Additionally I’m worried that using a sharpie would bleed through the pages even though they are relatively high quality, not sure I should be concerned about that but maybe I should bring a pen instead?

I wasn’t sure where I could get these questions and concerns answered in any meaningful way so I came here. Sorry for the trouble, it’s been a whirlwind of seemingly meaningless frivolous concerns in my head for the last few days. So much so that it’s even putting me off going entirely regardless of how close to the convention I live.

Volume 14 Question: Lawerence & Holo

In the epilogue of volume 14, how far did Lawrence go? Did he simply kiss her or did he like do something else? Also why did he suddenly feel pain when Holo fed him some eel? And why did his cheek hurt?

Not sure of the majority opinion but

So far I'm on episode 3 of the remake and I can honestly say I'm really impressed. I know nothing will top the original opening, but in my opinion this new opening is perfect for the remake. It feels nostalgic, like it's reintroducing the same beloved characters from 16 years ago in a sentimental reunion. To me, the opening felt like a love letter to the long time fans of the series, and it captured that sort of essence really well. Again just my opinion, and while I know the original is superior, I think this one holds its own.

As far as the animation, fantastic. At first I was wary because the original had so much charm to it, but this is a very clean, respectable looking art style that appears to be more in line with the more recent manga artistic style. I haven't actually read any of the manga, so I can't really speak on how much this remake is more true to the source material. But from what I've read it seems to be pretty close. Story wise it appears that it's also staying true to the story, not deviating and even refraining from the Chloe change. That's probably another matter of discussion in terms of preference.

My only hope is that the ending isn't the same as the original anime. I hope that with two cours, this becomes more fleshed out and there's no gaps, and also not an emotionally abrupt ending like how the original felt. But from what I've seen so far, I really like the remake. I feel like the series was respected and there was real investment in it. Also bringing back the original VA's (both for sub and dub) is so awesome. You can tell how much more experienced they all are and it makes it all shine more. I couldn't imagine Lawrence being voiced by anyone other than Jun Fukiyama, and it made me happy to hear him and the others again.

Hopefully this isn't a divisive opinion, but I wanted to take time to appreciate the work I've watched thus far.

    Just started Volume 6 audiobook

It’s very funny how Tatum and Brina mimic the voices of their character counter parts. I sort of wish Yen press would have allowed them to at least speak their character’s lines during chapters they don’t read.

I updated my English lyrics for On a Journey/Tabi no Tochuu

A while ago I posted my English lyrics for "On a Journey" here. Since then, this song has remained my favorite song and I've also learned a bit of Japanese. I realized now some of the meanings and thematic ideas were missing from my original lyrics. So, I procrastinated on work and instead spent a whole Friday afternoon revising my lyrics to capture the actual original meaning:

    On a Journey

I was journeying as a lonely being.
Found I had lost my way.
With legs frozen still and my fading will,
Just my heart moved - astray.
    But now I realize I’m revitalized;
    Nowhere’s too far to roam.
And it’s all due to my meeting you
    On this wandering road.

All of these songs that these travelers sing
Are - to my ears - unknown.
Even so, they start carrying a familiar ring
When you save me from being alone.

If the world that makes our dream’s not
Just a dream, then we can’t lose heart.
Shall we seek it? Shall we embark
On a journey ‘cross the winds?
    Through the freezing winter mornings,
Through the parched days - summers scorching,
Through the nights - dark and abhorring,
Let us find what’s at their end.

I see in the light of your silver eyes:
    Loneliness you have known.
And then with a blink, that same coloring’s
    Mirroring my own.

I’ll take the lunar form soaring up high,
    Crescently glowing alight.
Minty stars sparkling dimly and dotting the sky:
Fragments of tears in the night.

Deserts and snowfields and forests and prairies and blue, shining seas,
Cities and villages, towers of riches and warm, lively streets,
Mountains and valleys and labyrinths of alleys all share the same night sky.

So as long as you will let me
Take your hand, join and connect, we
    Have no limits, have no boundaries;
How far shall our journey last?
When I’m with you - us together -
We’ll brave any wind or weather.
Let us witness all this stellar
    World unfurl before our eyes!

I'll leave a comment with a deeper dive into how I interpreted the Japanese lyrics. Also, if anyone would like to work with me to make a recording of this, hmu. Would love to get an actual recording of this.

What did you feel after watching/rewatching the original Spice and Wolf Anime?

I first started watching Anime sometime in 2016 and Spice and Wolf was one of my firsts. I remember liking the Anime a lot and at the time it was a 10/10 for me. I enjoyed the journey, loved the characters, found the economics very interesting, but at the end I felt empty and unfulfilled.

8 years later I still think to myself that I would want to be a traveling merchant, if the internet was not a thing. I binged the original recently and I appreciate the work even more, but I feel very related to Lawrence from episode 1 - with a dream, but very lonely.

Not a single show managed to make me realise how bad my loneliness is. So I am wondering, if anyone felt the same/similar or what else did Spice and Wolf make you feel? Or was it just a good piece of work you enjoyed watching/reading with no personal attachment?

I haven't read the Light Novels yet, but I am going to buy them and plan to read it sometime after the ongoing remake ends. I regrettably am aware of the existence of Wolf and Parchment(as in I have an idea how the story ends), but I am also wondering if finishing the Light Novel got you closure in a story you love?

Ayakura Juu on designing Lawrence and Holo

    Source: https://twitter.com/haino/status/1787530307325083667

    狼の挿絵の話が来た時まだ挿絵の仕事未経験という事もあって、まず前半三分の一くらいの原稿を頂いて、先にホロとロレンスのキャラデザをして それを見てから実際に依頼するか決定するという感じで進める形だったのです

When the talks about doing the illustrations for S&W came along, I didn't have any experience doing novel illustrations, so I read the first third of the manuscript and designed Lawrence and Holo, and only took the job after looking at the results.

    で、実際請けることになって原稿全部読み終わり、とても頑張って考えたホロの服がはじけ飛んでた時の気持ちはたぶんずっと忘れない

So I got officially involved, and then after reading through the entire manuscript, I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of seeing the clothes I spent so much effort designing being ripped to shreds.
