What do you think about potential roommate's story?

Hey Calgary! I'm in the process of finding a roommate, and could use some advice on this situation. I usually rent out the second room in a 2 bedroom suite that I have been renting for over 2 years now. I showed the room to a couple of people recently and after one candidate didn't respond when I offered the room to him, I went with the other guy who was still interested. He mentioned he's an electrician in the last year of his apprenticeship at SAIT. Here's where things get weird. He said he didn't have all the rent ($700) and wanted to pay a partial deposit now with the remaining money on the 2nd, which is one day after move in. I didn't mind at first but then he said he also needed to bring in some of his stuff on the same day, which was 2 says earlier than the move in date. When I asked why he said his previous landlord locked him out and even though the police were present, they said they couldn't do anything for him. He said he had to stay in a cheap hotel and that's why he doesn't have the money because he paid for the hotel room. I remember when I met him the first time to show him the room, he said his landlord was a crackhead and he needed to find another place asap. But now he's telling me she locked him out. So, I told him I'm sorry, I can't give you the room because something doesn't add up in your story. Too many red flags. He claimed that he's telling the truth so I told him I needed references. He told me his sister Sam (who lives in LA) will contact me but instead another woman called Dana left a voicemail saying nice things about him and she said she'll call again later. The number is indeed from LA, but his sister not calling made me more suspicious.

I'm still looking for a roommate because the full rent is too high for me but I'd rather live alone without issues. What do you think I should do?

Microwaves repair recommendations

Sadly, our OTR that was installed last fall decided to not heat food anymore. Can anyone recommend a service that will come out and look at it? Since it's mounted, it would be a huge pain in the ass to take it in. I tried talking to Samsung, but they are useless.

Cool spaces to work on my laptop downtown?

Rarely have calls, mostly just work quietly with headphones on my ears.

Diamond Parking Ticket

Got a parking ticket at Sunridge mall from Diamond Parking. It it worth disputing (I have heard they almost never accept the dispute reasons) or just ignore it completely?

The parking lot is not a paid lot, I always pay at those, so this is the first private parking ticket I’ve ever got. I dropped my mother off at the AHS building and I went to park at the North end by Fountain Tire to wait. I got thirsty and walked over to Petro Canada to get a drink, chatted with some random eccentric, possibly homeless gentleman for a few minutes and went back to my car, about 20 minutes, and found I had been ticketed for leaving the lot. $83.15 for that, not a chance in hell I’m paying. To dispute, I have to fill out a form with all my information, which will make it easier to annoy me when I don’t pay. So basically what I asked above, worth the dispute or just ignore and have fun with the “collections” when they call?

Acorn Psychology experience??

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience with Acorn Psychology in Calgary for getting their child diagnosed with autism or anything. She's recently offered the practice in BC (where I'm from) a couple days a month but since it's new I can't find any local reviews so I'm hoping people from the original location can help share if they had a good experience? It's still dr. Keating

Aquafit Classes in Calgary

I’m looking for any recommendations for aquatic fitness classes, preferably something I can just drop in once a week or every other week. I was looking at YMCA classes but they are pretty pricy at $20 for a 45 minute class. I’m hoping to find classes that are at least an hour for that price if possible.

Vegan pubs, to watch the American election results

Hey folk's, looking for suggestions on a pub for November 5th to watch the American election results roll in with some buddies, one of which happens to be a vegan. Does anyone have any solid recommendations for a pub that serves true vegan fare? My buddy refrains from eating food that has been cooked in friers that also fry up chicken wings for example.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Study Spots

Hi, I just moved here and was wondering if anyone has any cafe recommendations (or other) that are good to chill at for a few hours a study? Where I use to live I had found one that people mainly went to to study at so hoping there’s something here like that

Car Alignment Prices

Hi all, I just got my winter tires on last week, and I believe my car needs an alignment. Kal-Tire is charging $160 to do it. Is that a reasonable price? If not, do you have any recommendations on where to get it done? Thanks!!

Anything going on from Nov 10-14?

Hey all, my partner and I are coming down to Calgary for a few days in November and we're trying to figure out what to do while we're down. I've been having a tough time finding some events/activities/date night things that are happening during that week (it seems like a lot of publicly advertised events are happening around but not on those days lol) and thought maybe asking around would have some thing pop up that aren't super advertised on the internet. Anything would be appreciated!

Root canal price

Hi all just wanted to share my experience after getting a root canal done. My regular dentist informed me I needed a root canal and referred me to a specialist because he doesn't do them. The specialist was good but made me pay upfront before the procedure, only charged my benefits and refused to use my partners saying I had to do that plus they would charge me an extra 2% if I used my credit card. $1900 I have no reference for this so I paid it. But this did not include the crown. I still had to go to my regular dentist for the crown. That was also $1900.

So I paid $3800 for one tooth. No wonder people can't afford regular dental care if they don't have benefits.

Bankruptcy

I lost my job in February. I've been wholly supported by my family since then, as I've been unable to find even the simplest job. I have no income whatsoever.

The debt for my one credit card is a monster that won't stop growing. I was told that since my debt is less than $50k bankruptcy wasn't a good idea. But the bank says it is. I've never been in financial trouble like this before. I don't know what to do or even where to go to get help. Does anyone have and suggestions for who I'm supposed to see in Calgary? Someone who hopefully won't charge me to give advice.

Thanks.

Where's the best place to buy an engagement ring in Calgary?

Hello! I'm doing research into where the best place to buy an engagement ring would be.

I've looked online at many major retailors but none of them have the somewhat specific design she wants.

If you've had a recent good experience somewhere in Calgary please let me know!

Michael Myers in Beddington

Did anybody else see a guy dressed up as Michael Myers riding a bicycle around the Beddington area. I was coming back from work at night, and I saw this guy pass me by in the dark. I looked in my rearview mirror and he was gone. Creeped me out! It was awesome!

Beware, Candy Thieves - A New Halloween Villain is Born

Tonight, my Halloween villain origin story was born. Before sunset, some brazen thief stole not just the candy, but the entire bowl, leaving nothing but a shadowy emptiness on my doorstep. It’s not the sweets or the bowl that haunt me, but the thought of all those little ghouls and goblins who came after, in hopes of treats, only to find a ghastly void.

Usually, I’d be there myself, handing out the candy, but fate had other plans. A flu plagues my friends, so I took their kids trick-or-treating, only to return to this treachery.

Next year? Oh, things will be different. I’m plotting already… Maybe I’ll disguise myself as a lifeless prop sprawled across the lawn chairs, waiting to jolt wickedness out of the candy bandits. Or perhaps I’ll hide in the shadows behind the fence, garden hose or super soaker in hand, ready to rain down justice on those who dare to steal.

Any other sinister ideas? It’s time to bring the “trick” back to trick-or-treating!
