Which community ODRs are open?

Itching to play some hockey. Anyone know which ODRs are open around the city or specially in the NW?

PS: if anybody lives in the Hamptons, is their ODR open? Used to live there but I don’t anymore

Best place to get dashcam installed on a budget?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get a dashcam installed in my car and was wondering if anyone knows the best place to get it done without breaking the bank. Ideally, I'd like a place that does a good, clean install but is also reasonably priced.

Should I go to a local shop, a chain store like Best Buy, or try installing it myself? Also, any recommendations for affordable but reliable dashcams would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Why do Canadians hate Calgary?

I’m American so this is outside looking in. Real talk, I see Canadians badmouth Alberta all the time but as an outsider it clearly seems to be the best part of Canada. Quebec has French people and the French aren’t cool, Toronto has fake gangsters like Drake, Vancouver has people from Seattle except it’s in Canada. Alberta is clearly the best place except for maybe the parts of Canada that are in the country and basically Skyrim. Alberta is the home of everything cool in Canada, from Bret Hart to Calgary Stampede. So why do they hate it?

Anyone able to recommend personal cyber security consultation local to Calgary?

So my parents have various finances and investments including crypto and they are just tech savvy enough to be dangerous to their own interests… I am fairly knowledgeable on most cyber security issues and mitigation and I’m their go to IT person but I run my own business and don’t have time to monitor, assess and dive deep into all of their stuff to help them.

My mother is fairly careless when it comes to passwords, downloads, phishing scams, information scams(she’s heavy into the casino letter scam and I can’t convince her that they are selling her information) she’s so heavily money driven she sees dollar signs, not risk.

I’ve suggested MFA, a specific password generator and password keeper such as Bitwarden(instead of a post it note 6” from her laptop screen with all her passwords on it) and also different passwords for every login.

TLDR;

I’m looking for a trusted cybersecurity company that is local that can come in and assess their network, look for any possible breaches, same with any devices on their network. Help them set up MFA for everything they need and password generation. Do an assessment on everything they have on the go and give them a report of it. Coming from an IT professional may carry more weight than I can so she can see she is at serious risk of being taken for significant amounts of money if someone had the right access.

Money isn’t an issue for consultation fees for them and no offence to someone like geek squad but I would rather have a dedicated cybersecurity firm that offers coverage for smaller clients.

I’ve called a few places and they only offer medium to large cybersecurity services and didn’t have anyone to recommend for smaller clients

RV Dwellers on Moraine Road NE Being Relocated

Police and tow trucks have been there this morning removing the RVs from the road. They're down to the last RV being lifted up to tow right now. Has anyone heard where they're being relocated to?

People are getting worse at walking here too

Tons of complaints about bad drivers in this sub, but I haven’t seen anything on what a complete mess the walking and cycling paths have become. There’s a nice yellow line down the middle of them and signs everywhere telling people to stay to the right, and still people just walk wherever they want. It’s driving me insane.

Last month I was out for a walk with my eight year old daughter, who had a broken foot and was wheeling around on a mobility scooter. She kept trying to move into the left lane to avoid the people walking straight into her. I kept telling her, loudly, that the other people were in the wrong lane and to let them move for her. Very few people did. I ended up losing my temper and yelling at two women for having the gall to expect a disabled child to move out of their way when they were already in the wrong. I got a dirty look and they walked off without saying a word.

I can deal with this fine when I’m by myself. I just walk into people. I’m not proud of doing this, I’m old enough to handle myself better than this, but there’s only so many times I can tell strangers to walk on the right before I stop caring. However, trying to reach my kids walking and cycling rules feels fruitless when I teach them to walk and cycle on the right and seemingly half the people around them are doing whatever they want and expecting others to move for them.

Get a dashcam for Calgary Winters, you'll be glad one day

Dashcams are one of the most worthwhile investments in Calgary Winters. The front 2 drivers didn't have dashcams and they said they didn't see what happened. But I gave them this footage so it'll help with their insurance case.

Dashcam, winter tires and keep distance everyone

Dermal piercing recommendations

I'm looking for piercing shops that do chest dermal piercings. I assume it's like tattoos and not all shops are equal. Looking for quality work over lower prices.

Car Damage - Max Bell Arena, Nov 23-24

This is a 2 part post. I've hesitated to post this, but I eventually felt compelled to. Someone ran into the driver's side rear door of my parked car either Saturday November 23 or Sunday November 24 at Max Bell Arena during the Western Canada U18AA Showdown. This person left and didn't leave a note and now I'm on the hook for these damages.

Part 1 - If you have kids, please, for the love of God, instill in them the concepts of accountability, responsibility, and doing the right thing. Don't raise your kids to be people who don't take responsibility for their actions.

Part 2 - On the highly slim chance you or someone you know did this, please contact me. I'm not even angry about it because things happen, I'm just really disappointed and discouraged. I love this car and it's entirely defeating to come out and find this.

Shrink-flation in coffee

Well. I’m done with phil and Sebastian’s coffee. Their new packaging masks a nice little surprise of 50g less coffee. And for $18 at most retailers I’m out. Old man shaking fist at clouds now, but I miss when cafes retailed a pound of beans for $8-12 tops.

250g won’t last my house a week.

ISO: Glasses Repair

I’m visiting for Canmore/Kananaskis for a week. I broke the hinge from one of my glasses’ temples (ie. the arms). I think I’ll need both temples completely replaced. The option to order new temples from the manufacturer is probably nil because the glasses are two years old and slightly higher end (Alain Mikli).

I had originally bought the frames at Costco in the US. The last time I brought in an older pair of cheaper frames with a broken hinge to Costco, they were unable to fix them.

Is there an optician in Calgary that you can recommend that would be able to get this fixed in a week.

AVOID EB Stoney Trail SE at Deerfoot Trail SE interchange.

Semi flipped on its side at the flyover. Cops say it could be shut down for several hours as of 6am.

Seeking quiet pub/bar in the NW/SW with decent food where you can talk.

I'm looking for a good pub with decent food where it's quiet enough to talk on a weeknight. Ideally looking for something north of 18th Ave SW, south of 20th Ave NW, not too far from Crowchild or 14th St. But could go further afield.

Men's mentorship in Business/Entrepreneurship

Hey Calgary!

I’m an aspiring entrepreneur and have been working professionally in a service based company for about 4 years now. I love how this city is such a great place to meet people and build connections, so I thought I’d put this out there.

I’m looking for men’s mentorship programs or someone with business experience in services who might be willing to volunteer some time to share their experience. Even just grabbing a coffee and chatting about building a business would mean a lot about.

If you know someone I should connect with, let me know—I’d really appreciate it!
