Vancouver Marathon May 4

Hey all!

(22M) I’m planning on running the Vancouver Marathon this May—super excited! This will be my first time traveling to a different province for a race. I’ve been looking into hotels, but the prices are ridiculously expensive.

For those who is planning on racing as well, would anyone be interested in splitting a hotel?

Let me know!

Immediate fog issue (underground parking)

Hello!

I’m living in a condo where we’re lucky enough to have underground parking. They keep it quite warm and we also have a car wash station so it’s humid as well.

The issue I’m facing is that every time I come home on a cold day, my car fogs up so badly and so quickly that I can’t even use my mirrors to reverse into my space. I always roll down my window and scrape at my side view mirror but it barely makes a dent. Is there anything I can do to stop this or at the very least, lessen it? It’s driving me crazy.

Ordering online with Canada post

Hey everyone,

Sorry I know this isn’t exactly Edmonton related. But I want to know if people in Edmonton have recently ordered something online.

I’m not sure whether to use a courier or Canada Xpresspost. Which normally takes 2 days with Canada xpresspost.

I haven’t used Canada post to order anything since the strike and was wondering if anyone here has had delays or not as I don’t want it to take forever to get to me.

It’s coming from Langley bc to Edmonton , if that even matters or not .

So basically just wondering anyone in Edmonton having delays with Canada post or not?

Thanks, and buying Canadian .

Looking for a place in or around Edmonton that does screen printing for baby onesies.

Looking at screen printing places in Edmonton and all the websites I've looked at are mostly showing adult clothing. Before I start calling every store I figured I'd ask on here if anyone knew any places I can get pictures printed on baby clothes like onesies or bibs. Thanks!

What to do about 2 smashed up vehicles on Edmonton street that the city will not remove?

Last Monday, I drove past two vehicles that are smashed up near the interchange of 101 Street NW and 120 Avenue NW. There is a small white vehicle completely written off, at an angle slightly protruding on the street in front of a "No Parking" sign. The second vehicle is a dark SUV that is immediately north of the intersection, parked facing the wrong way, which is also written off.

Myself and others have reported this to the City of Edmonton, yet the vehicles have been just sitting there. The white car looks like someone smashed the windows, peraps to see if there was anything valuable enough to steal. I don't see this in rural areas, let alone in a busy are of Edmonton. Our tax dollar at work, I guess?

If the City of Edmonton will not move the abandoned vehicles that have just been left in No Parking areas, what does one do about this? I would not be surprised if someone just decides to strip the vehicles of their tires, and anything salvageable in the coming days.

anti homelessness programs?

Hi everyone! I’m posting asking if there’s any anti homeless programs? I work 2 jobs. I always have my bills paid on time. But I’m January I had Covid for 10 days. (Doesn’t seem long) BUT it was. And I missed out 10 days of working. I’m short on rent now. Does anyone know if there’s programs for loans specifically for this? I have bad credit as is because I was a dumb 19-21yr old and now I’m 27 unable to get a loan. (Young adults take credit seriously please)

Baseboard Heaters in the Cold Snap

Is it normal for apartment baseboard heating to not quite keep the place hot with the temperatures being around -30 right now? My thermostat "clicks" around 18-20c, and even though the heaters have been running constantly the floor & surfaces are all cool to the touch.

Cybertruck Owners

Any Cybertruck owners in here?

With all the attention they are getting, what’s it like driving one in Edmonton?

Are people always taking pictures of your vehicle?

Are you getting more love or hate?

Coming at this from a place of curiosity, not judgement! Would be interested to see how driving a “celebrity car” like this has affected your day to day.

What can Edmonton do as a city re: Trump threats?

Okay so Trump just now doubled down on Canada becoming a state and using economic warfare to pressure such a outcome:

"“We don’t need them. As a state, it’s different. As a state it’s much different. And there are no tariffs,” Trump said. “So I’d love to see that. Some people say that would be a long shot. If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100 percent certain that they’d become a state. But a lot of people don’t like to play the game. Because they don’t have a threshold of pain.” - source

I am wondering what we can do as a community to prepare for this kind of economic warfare. Off the top of my head things we could do as a city or at least council could talk about:

  • Direct EPCOR to move out of America: EPCOR runs business operations in America. We should consider wether or not we would want to continue doing that business.
  • Fund Foodbanks & Stand Up Local Produce: City council could move to increase funding for foodbank operations and funding to open local alternatives, like the different farmers markets, so they could operate 24/7. Most of the biggest grocery chains in Edmonton are American owned and providing and communicating the direct local competition would provide more food security.
  • Cancel Software Contracts - The City of Edmonton uses Google services for its IT. These are big contracts, millions of dollars. It might be a big learning curve to switch to Canadian IT providers however it would be a big message to the corporate tech oligarchs stateside that this is serious.
  • Review Contracts for American Companies - On the same vien as the last, what contracts does the city have that are with American companies? Can those be rethought?

Anyway, thats what I got off the top of the dome. Anything else yall can think off?

Edit: Latest news is 30 day pause on tariffs. Plenty of time to open up these debates at council. Lets get going!

Place to stay

I am currently staying on a friends couch. (Not much room here and they have kids so I’m a bit of a burden) I’ve recently split with the mother of my kids. I’ve put all my belongings in a storage unit, aswell as sent my dog to a pet sitter that I found on the app “rover.” I was laid off around the same time. (I have great luck) most of my funds have gone to the storage unit and pet sitter. I have put in an application with income support, and I’m waiting on a response. I have found a new job which I start on Monday. My question is, is there any landlords, or people who may know of somewhere that would allow me to move in on a promise to pay at a later date? I’m aware that this is probably not an option but figured it doesn’t hurt to ask.

First (and last) visit to LaunchPad

Took my 6 year old daughter to a birthday party at LaunchPad over the weekend, what a mistake. WAY too many kids bouncing and being reckless. A bigger kid (probably 12ish) jumped on my daughter's ankle when she had fallen, and bounced away without even checking if she was okay. No staff around to help, had to leave the party early to get her checked out. Now she can’t put any weight on her ankle and it’s badly swollen (sprained).

Here's the kicker - the doctor told us they get 7-10 kids in the Grey Nuns ER every month from LaunchPad in the west end. This is crazy to me.

Seems like it’s only a matter of time until a child gets seriously injured from this place, if it hasn’t already happened.

PSA: Over the next three days if you can't handle people driving under the speed limit, stay off the roads

Significantly more people are going to drive under the speed limit the next three days. If you can't deal with it, stay off the roads.

Salt works by lowering the melting point of ice. Typically this is enough to melt the ice and it's no longer as slippery. However, when it's too cold outside the melting point of ice is not lowered enough to melt the ice, meaning it's virtually useless as it just freezes.

Over the next three days the forecasted temperature is low enough that salt will be ineffective and that means icy road conditions. These will get worse as the days goes on, especially near intersections, as people spin their tires and slide their vehicles which in turn polishes the ice to a nice smooth finish. Hopefully by Wednesday the weather will be better, however the city will have a lot of roads that need attention and it's likely they will all be very icy still for several days after the temperature rises.

People will and should drive slower in these conditions. If this frustrates you to the point that you can't control yourself and make dangerous driving decisions because you get frustrated, get off the roads. Take the bus, take a taxi or just stay home.

Don’t forget to boycott Krispy Kreme.

Same thing with chipotle,McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr, KFC, Popeyes,Timmie’s pretty much all fast food get ready to support your local businesses.

don’t put your money into the pockets of Warren Buffett and American interests, same thing with Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Budweiser, Canada dry Ginger ale, even your big gulp and slurpee from 7-11 same goes for your vape/cigarette/tobacco coffee/tea in the morning, don’t forget your afternoon Best Buy trip and Walmart stop for our children’s school supplies. these are things we can do to minimize the impact this has on the generation that follow us we need to rely on each other for the sake of our children and put any silly, petty, out right dumb issues to be put aside well we unite and fight back for a common goal against a common enemy.

These are things that a lot of us won’t do overnight, but we can make these changes and better our city and our people and unite with a common goal to see our city of Edmonton fight back against this terrible situation and become stronger as a city then we already are. 🇨🇦team Canada 🇨🇦

Edit: Damn the positive and negative comments are wild too see. thankful these tariffs will be on hold for 30 days as the Prime Minister just announced after speaking with presidentCheeto

This post was not to call out fast food or smoking or tell you to change your own enjoying of products and services I made this post too see my city’s response too something that would change your day to day life’s for all of us not to call out individual companies or businesses but to bring awareness to Canadian brands and our city’s strength and independence not in a political or social justice sense but as a team.

Are there any public/available plugs I can use for my car's heat blocker in Edmonton?

I am new to Edmonton, and I am scared as my Honda Civic's car battery may die or the oil freezes if I don't have the heat block plugged in -- especially in this cold temperature. I would appreciate any info and help!!

Best Pho Place

Hey! I’ve been trying to find a good pho place but at most of the places I’ve been, the soup base has been bland or the meat quality is just not that good. Looking for some restaurants that sell good quality pho.

Thanks!

Taking transit today.

Wearing my down ankle length coat, snow pants, winter boots, two layers of clothing plus undies and a belaclava hat combo. I feel indestructible right now and am looking forward to sweating my butt off for the 20 minutes while I take off the outer layer at work.

I’d rather stay warm than look cool.

Stay warm out there, folks! Frostbite is not a joke, cover your skin!

Thoughts on how the economy is going to go? Anyone nervous about making ends meet?

Honestly i’m not one to post about current events usually but my boyfriend and i were going to upsize/ upgrade to a better apartment in a couple months and now we are debating if it’s even a good idea. The canadian dollar is pretty low now… and honestly if most places start charging $2100/m for rent then i’m honestly debating on moving back into my parents lol. Im a longterm renter type person so im not looking to move after a year every time. Im shocked to realize how many of my “couple friends” have moved in with their parents again to help make ends meet on both their side and their parents.

i’m honestly wondering how many people in edmonton are able to afford such outrages prices since i know there are so many people that make less than my household. My rent has jumped from 1075 in 2021 to 1700 this spring. I’ve never seen so many people steal PRODUCE from the grocery store until now.

Idk. So basically what the fuck are yall doing nowadays to keep afloat?
