Anybody know where a good legal spot/range that I can try out my 12 gauge on? Looking for east of red deer. I found one near stettler but it is not good for shotguns. Sorry if this was posted already.

Work to hunt

I currently live in unit 248 and I’m looking for some private land access for the 2025 deer season. I am hoping to give a helping hand to anyone that needs it to get access to some private land for the hunting season. My understanding is that paying for land access is illegal so figure sweat equity is a good way to get a foot in the door. Dm me or comment if you’re interested!

Ps. I only bow hunt so there will be no shooting of rifles.

Thanks in advance.

Hunting rifle recommendations

Looking at purchasing my first hunting rifle for myself.

Looking for personal recommendations. I’m looking for something lightweight to be able to hike with, that I can load with rounds good enough for deer to moose and anything in between. Undecided but considering .308 300win mag, 30-06 or .253.

Kind of looking at the tikka t3 lite. Like that it seems to shoot well and can be customized.

Needs to be able to be left handed, and for a decent rifle and scope set up I’m thinking between $2-$3k.

Something that’s going to last that I can possibly hand down to my kids later on.

What's the best .22 rifle in your collection?

Looking to mess around with a .22 rifle. Something that's fun and can maybe get me a grouse or two.

Any hunting mentors or buddies?

Just looking to get into hunting, and could use a mentor or someone with a few hunts under their belt to help get me started on the right path. Open to any game. Brand new to it and just not sure where to start. I’m located in central Alberta, more than willing to just tag along and learn the ropes and do the grunt work for experience.

Hunters Education

Does anybody know if I took my hunters education in the United States if it would cover me needing to retake it here? I’ve been hunting since I was 12 so around 15 years so hoping I don’t have to retake the course. I am now a permanent resident in Canada residing in Alberta and really hoping to be able to get back into it. Thanks!

Shooting/Hunting near Edmonton

I just moved here from a small town in sask and have so much regrets. I’m used to crown land 15min away from me. Deer hunting grazing land and crown land was a 20min drive. 2 hours in elk and moose country…

The shooting range was so close to my house too…

Anyone have any recommendations for skeet shooting and just target shooting near edm?

I have hunting rifles and shotguns just wanna get out and group some new bullets and shoot some skeet.

It is unlawful to: Use a light

From the hunting regs prohibitions section 5.

I believe the intention of this prohibition is to prevent lamping or dazzling animals? Is that correct?

Does it extend to using a light to for example: find the rifle magazine you just dropped, check the map as you walk in to your spot...

What about using a light which is invisible to the human eye? An infra red light and scope for coyotes for example?

Anyone got any experience in night vision scopes being used for Coyote in Alberta? Hearsay or otherwise? 😉

Seeking advice for grouse hunting (Green Hunter)

Hello, I'm a new green hunter just joined about 2 weeks ago. I wanted to make the most use out of the remaining grouse season (until Jan 15 I believe?) So Ive been going after grouse pretty much on every single days off and no luck 🙃

Everybody on the internet and YouTube generally portrayed a grouse as the dumbest bird on the planet, so it kind of gave me impression that it was gonna be a smooth sailing.

I'm hunting with a shotgun and I don't have a ton of experiecne, so i have to pause, make aim and take a shot, which takes a good amount of time.

It keeps ending up the way either grouse notices me approaching first and flies away, or I spotted a grouse, attempted to move a little closer and make aim, and then grouse hears me walking over crispy leaves rustling and flees.

I did see a fair number of grouse but I lost them all in this ways. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. What's the best way to approach hunting grouse with a shotgun?

What Caliber Would You Choose?

Hey everyone! I decided I wanted to treat myself to a new go-to rifle for all my big game hunting (elk, mule deer, moose, et) and im debating changing calibers. I currently have a 308 im practiced to, but wondering if im missing out in terms of potential.

My ethical range (species depending) is 400 yards max! I'll always work towards getting closer, regardless.

Here are some contenders im debating

30-06

270 Win

7 Rem Mag

Thanks for your opinion!

Slingshot hunting

Hello, I recently got into slingshot hunting and I really want to know if there is any place that is close to Calgary where I can hunt Hares/Rabbits and I really want to learn more about public and private land. So if anyone knows anything about rabbit/hare hunting with a slingshot near Calgary please reply.

mini bikes for hunting

does anyone know if mini bikes like the ones that sell at princess auto can they be registered and insured to drive on crown land. I know i could probably buy a 50cc gas scooter street legal and use it. Some reason i think mini bikes are just for private land .

Taking my buddies son for yotes.

My good friends son is 16, I helped him get his first deer this year (WT Buck) and he expressed an interest in coming out for coyotes.

We arranged a day out for tomorrow but now his dad has to work. Do I need a note from his dad saying I have permission to take his son hunting?

We'll be taking a couple of rifles, his dad has a bolt .243 that his son uses. I know I have to be within arms reach of him at all times etc.

How viable is truck hunting

My friend and I are both new to hunting and this year we've gone after whitetails and elk. My friend wants to stick mostly to the truck, and doesn't like waiting around. He wants to drive around trying to spot game. We've come across a number of animals this year that we could have bagged this way, but we spooked them all away with the truck.

I started to think this was a waste of time, but then found posts online from others claiming to approach hunting the same way. So, how? How do you take an animal this way? The truck is such a loud, bright, obvious thing, these animals are spotting us from incredible distances. We've gotten very close to some in the truck, but then how do you actually get out and get into position for a legal shot before they take off? I don't get it.

522 late season elk

Anyone else on here gonna be hunting 522 late season (Dec 21 kick off)?

I'll be scouting a day before opening and I believe I have enough private land permission to have a good start.

Just wondering if anyone has had much luck on the crown running the banks of the peace river. And if anyone wants to share some info back and forth if we're hunting the same zone same time

Not needing or looking for permission or honey holes just offering to share info with some people

Cheers

Rabbit/hare hunting

Travelling from Ontario to Alberta for a camping/small game hunting trip. Planning to camp out in the mountains/foothills to go after grouse. Can I expect to find rabbits or snowshoe hares in these regions? If not, there where should I look? I’d imagine the jackrabbits are more-so in the prairie regions. Thanks!

CWD test results.

My head was submitted Nov 15 and got the results Nov 22. Next cold snap I’m calling in sick and making sausage when I can use the deck as a blast chiller.

What was your turn around time?

One cartridge for Alberta, what is it?

I recently moved back to Alberta, Edmonton area, after 15+ years away and finally have the time to get into hunting. I’ve started going with family, borrowing a rifle, just learning the land. They have mostly 308, a couple 3006, and I’ve heard about the punch of a 338.

Before next year’s season I’ll buy my own rifle. Preferably only one rifle for a while, not indefinitely, but for at least 5 years. I’ll also have a 410 and some sort of smaller rim fire for small game.

The majority of my focus would be mule/wtail/elk.

First - what cartridge would y’all recommend?

Second - budgeting for $800-$1200 with $1,500 being the top range for the rifle itself - any specific brand/rifles y’all would recommend?

Apologies if this has been asked before, can’t wait for your input!

Cheers

edit I should mention that I’m 6’7 320lbs so I’m not concerned about kick or gun weight.

Don’t be these people.

Out on my moose hunt and found this deep in some beautiful crown land. Keep this up and we won’t be allowed to have access to this type of land anymore. I never made a post like this before because I try to stay positive but this really upset me. Clean up your garbage people.
