All about the classic 90s sitcom

The audacity of calling "NewsRadio" just a 90s show! It’s a masterpiece, a finely crafted world where chaos meets genius! You don’t watch it, you survive it - like juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle through a hailstorm. But sure, “just a sitcom”... Next, you’ll call Bill McNeal “just a guy.”
Perhaps his inspiration for a podcast came from "Our 50th episode". A chilling taste of things to come!
Sorry for the potato photo, I was definitely not taking this while driving.
I loved the show and treasure every moment, but my absolute favorite will always be Super Karate Monkey Death Car (from the classic literature, Jimmy James, Macho Business Donkey Wrestler). In case anyone needs a smile, here you go!
Transcription... "From Chapter 3:"
I had a small house of brokerage on Wall Street. Many days, no business comes to my hut. But Jimmy has fear? A thousand times no!
I never doubted myself for a minute for I knew that my monkey-strong bowels were girded with strength, like the loins of a dragon ribboned with fat and the opulence of buffalo dung.
The glorious sunset of my heart was fading. Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans, and pants to match.
The monkey clown horrible karate -- round and yummy like a small baby chick would... beat the donkey.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of NewsRadio on March 21, we’re putting together a fan tribute for Paul & co. Deadline is March 1! Please send your words, images, songs, stories, videos, and art about what NewsRadio means to you, to wnyxfans@gmail.com
Has Joe Rogan ever had any of the Newsradio cast on his podcast? It would be great to have the full cast on a show some time.
1-4, GO!
I have this scene in my head where Mr. James hides different snacks in Matthews desk as a way to market test out different types and he spies on Matthew squirreling away the ones he likes. I remember it being a hilarious scene, but cant think of what episode it its.
My sister is the best gift giver, and this year she topped herself ten times over. I have no way of knowing if it is genuine, but the brand (StarWears) and the era seem legitimate. There is no way of knowing who wore it (likely crew), but to have a tangible piece of memorabilia from my favorite show is just more than I would ever even think to ask for. Just need to share it with someone! It brightens my mood every time I pass by it:)
Back at work after 2 weeks off. I need this.
For the life of me I can't remember what episode features the line "You barfed in the punchbowl we all share, and now you expect us to believe it’s alphabet soup?"
What is it?
The recent post on Jon Lovitz reminded me of this great piece of work, which in part covers the character dynamics and the show post-Phil and how the balance was never right.
The website died sometime in the 00s and is now only viewable via the Internet Archive, so I figure some people might be unaware of it.
Anyway, it's basically a thesis that dissects the show. As a bonus, it features some charming 90s style graphics.
I love Jon Lovitz, but I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I found him an underwhelming replacement for Phil. Phil’s genuine gravitas and dramatic chops were a big part of the Bill MacNeil character and Lovitz just didn’t have that skill set.
So, if not Lovitz, who?
Thomas Lennon: The State and Viva Variety were done by ‘99 and Thomas could have been a good addition as a smarmy broadcaster. My only issue is his inherent ‘normal guy’ relatability kind of duplicates Dave’s role on the show.
Stacey Keach: Real dramatic and comedic chops, a bigger name than most of the cast and the fact that he was in his 50s would help Stacey stand out. His ‘Mike Hammer’ relaunch also ended in ‘98, so he would be available. He also has a talent for being genuinely evil, which would be a fun departure from Bill’s arrogant but ultimately harmless character.
I don’t think there’s a good fit among Dave’s KITH castmates, nor among Lennon’s The State cast (maybe Michael Ian Black, but he’s not much of an actor).
Any suggestions?
There is a guy with glasses and a beard in the background of a lot of episodes. Is he ever named in the credits, or is he just an unnamed background character? Heard a rumor that he's a director or producers son.
I'm sure we all have them: those moments that are just so good you have to see them/hear the punchline/experience it multiple times.
For me it's Beth and Bill's performance during the talent show. She's such a great singer, and there's a specific piano/singing combination during the performance that itches my brain just right ("another sunny honeymoon")
What are yours?
In which episode does Jimmy James slide across the floor ala Tom Cruise in Risky Business?
Happy... New Year.
Just wanted to get that out of the way early.
