Can you keep mice found in your house?

Long story short we have a small mouse problem, assuming I get a catch and release mouse trap to catch them would it be safe to? Or do pet mice need to be specially bred? I’ve always loved small soft animals like hamsters, gerbils, and of course mice so I think this is a great opportunity to save some poor babies that would alternatively starve in the cold outside.

How many mice for my new tank?

Hi! I recently upgraded my girls to the 120cm Bucastate tank, so if is about 47in long x 23in wide. I'd say the equivalent to a 75 gallon tank. I currently have 5 girls in there but everything I have seen says I can, and probably should, get more. I can definitely accommodate some more mouths! But I am not sure how many? At first I was thinking only 3 to make it 8 but I read anywhere from 8-15 would be fine so should I make it 10? The girls I have right now are fairly easy going I don't think they would mind the added friends, I would just hate to overcrowd them.

setting up our introduction tank! any tips?

We've set up a 15 gallon with about 3 inches of bedding, scatter feeding, and 2 water sources to introduce a pair of girls we'll be picking up in the near future to our group of 3. We have 1 hide in there with some nesting materials. I'm still pretty unsure of how is best to set up an introduction tank, so any and all suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated!! please let me know if I'm doing anything wrong!!

chunky mouse

i put my male mouse on a diet of just science selective pellets for a week and he’s still chonky. for context he’s about a year old, he’s a non agouti ( not a red mouse so wouldn’t have red obesity gene) and a rescue. i used to feed him the getzoo mouse food and decorate /clutter the enclosure with sprays, which i have now stopped. he has a wheel as well that he uses and is fairly active * but i just feel so bad because he is quite fat

Found a mouse today

UPDATE : sadly I don’t think little mouse is going to make it. Checked on her this morning and things have taken a drastic turn. She’s alive but barely moving. I’m sad about it, but atleast she got to be warm and comfortable and fed, instead of wet and freezing outside. Sadly we have no idea what she got into, how she was treated or how long she was out there before I found her. 😢

I live in a 2nd floor apartment and I walked out on my balcony this morning and I saw this tiny little white mouse walking along all the fallen leaves in the open area behind my building. Not hiding, not running, just walking. It was quite cold out, so it looked a little stiff walking. I walked right up to it and picked it up and it curled up in my hand trying to get warm. So I have a mouse now. Im guessing someone released it, or it escaped as a pet or food. Im guessing its a girl, cause I see no signs of testicles, but this is my first mouse. Ive had gerbils and hamsters and guinea pigs and rabbits and everything else, but never had a mouse before lol From what I read, if it is a female, shes going to need a friend... but I wanted to wait a little while, incase shes pregnant. I know if shes a feeder they dont much care if they are kept together cause they arent going to live long anyway. But... anyone have any suggestions to make her life more comfy? Anything special I should know? Im an avid researcher when it comes to pets, so im all ears!

Edit: and im immediately seeing online that sexing a mouse is vastly different than other rodents lol Going to have to check again tomorrow since testicles are not what were looking for lol

Rest in peace honey.

I don’t know what happened.. she was fine yesterday but it looks like my other mice killed her. I am beyond upset and I am so sorry for doing this to her. I feel like it’s my fault but I didn’t see any problems with her and the other mice at all but she was perfectly fine yesterday when I was playing with them. I’m a horrible mother and I don’t want to hurt my mice any more. I don’t know what I did wrong and I loved her so much I can’t believe this happened. I took her to the vet 2 days ago because she seemed to be in torpor and they said she was okay and I don’t know what happened. She loved to be held and she was my most friendly mouse. I miss her so much already and I am just in shock I’m sorry

Advice on What to Get for 40 Gal Breeder Tank? First Time Mice Owner

Hello all! After lurking on this sub for a while, I decided to get mice! I have a Syrian hamster who lives in a 40 gallon breeder tank, but I’ve since learned it’s too small so she will be getting an upgrade.

So I will have a free 40 gallon breeder, and am debating between what would be better, 1 male or multiple females? If I did females, what would be a good number?

I’d personally prefer females as I want to see them interact and don’t want to be it’s only source of socialization since I also have a hamster to take care of, but all the rescues near me only have males left. And I’d rather not get pet store rodents if I can help it, though I’m willing to if it comes to that.

Of course I need to do some more research on mice, but I have the majority of supplies already from my hamster (lab blocks, seed mixes as a treat, lots of bedding, unused chews, and reject hides that were too small for my Syrian). All I have bought so far is a water bottle and 9 inch wheel. If there’s anything else I’m missing, please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

advice on adding more mice?

We currently have a 50 gallon with 3 girls inside. I wanted to ask the best way to go about adding a pair of girls to our group of 3? How long should introductions be done for? I feel like having 5 will give them all a more balanced dynamic, as one of our mice does sometimes chase another one around (nothing aggressive or anything so far, just some chasing). Any advice would really be appreciated :)

Would it make sense to keep mice short term to release them all together in one place after catching them?

I know this subreddit is for people who voluntarily keep mice as pets. But since my question is about ensuring the wellbeing of mice I hope it is ok for me to ask here, since you guys are the experts. I have mice on my attic for the second time. Last time I caught and released them all in one place. It was three in total over two days. Now I have them again and I just released the first one.

But I feel really horrible at the thought, that the mouse just lost its family since they are social animals. I doubt they can find each other, even if I release them all in the same place. So I thought about making a little home for them in a box and waiting until I didn't catch another mouse in three days and then release them all together.

Would that make sense? Or would they get aggressive being locked up in a box together and end up killing each other? Is it a bad idea for another reason?

If it's a good idea, would a box with holes, some hay, water and veggies for food be enough?

The girls got introduced to each other last night and a new cage 🥰

I was gifted my original mouse Stassi by my boyfriend’s mom a few days ago. She came from a kid who attends the music school she manages that tried to give her away as a secret Santa present and she seemed very stressed and timid for days. I think part of it is that the kid took her to a fucking rock concert which probably scared the shit out of her and she had a very chaotic couple of days before she came to me. I came on here bc I am a first time owner and with help from people realized that she needed companions, so I got two more mice (Wendy and Cookie) yesterday and since I finally got paid I was able to get them everything they need (I was completely unprepared when I got Stassi). I introduced them after letting them get used to each other’s scent for about 12hr and they get along great! Stassi seems a lot happier, she was way more active than usual and I’m glad they’re all getting along! ☺️

Cat recently caught a juvenile mouse. We found it with its leg and potentially one of its arms broken. We could not release it as it is winter and it would die, so we took it in. It has been eating and running around and burrowing. Anything else we should do?

He's currently in a 10 gallon as he is very tiny with about 5 inches of substrate, plenty of food and water, and a toilet paper roll as a makeshift cave.

A poem I wrote.

I cut four pieces of apple today.

Each morning, I wake up and smile when I see your faces. You pace back and forth in the cage, waiting for my warm hand to reach in and say good morning. When the rusted cage door moans you peek your heads out from your hammocks. You run, and jump, and play, and anxiously wait for cuddles.

All of you are so different yet so alike. I notice all the little things you do, all the silly traits you have. Without one, I would see the absence of your character.

I cut four pieces of apple today.

As I reach into the cage, each of you happily takes an apple slice. First, gentle and calm. The next as if I'm starving you. The other, who took a while to crawl out of their hammock, grabbed the sweet fruit impatiently.

I wait for the last of you, usually there is one who always takes forever. I look around, trying to find where you are. As I search the cage, I slowly come to realization.

I cut four pieces of apple today.

It's hard to break the habits I've learned. Without you, it's so clear you aren't there. I wish I didn't love you so, but I'm happy that I cared.

The enclosure is missing an important piece. One I can't replace. I wish you could come back again, and fill your favorite space.

Watching you go tore me apart, but I'm happy you are no longer in pain. I will cut only three apples from now on, so one is not cut in vain.

There are so many things that you take along with you, and your absence will be clear. But either way I must move on, since your other friends are here.

I loved you more than you could know.

I cut four pieces of apple today.

In loving memory of the rats and mice I've lost.

Over wintering deer mice

I caught some deer mice close to winter in a frigid area and am overwintering them. The first 4 are so sweet and live in perfect harmony. When I caught the next 2 everyone freaked out and those 2 somehow got out. Fast forward, I got a second cage caught a final 4 and all was well with 2 separate families of 4. It's been several weeks without issue.

Last weekend while cleaning cages, one from the 2nd family got away. I trapped the mouse and put "it" back in the cage this morning. I keep hearing commotion/squeaking and when I look I am seeing some chasing/minor "scrapping" and someone jumping on the cage ceiling or running/ hiding. I don't know who is who or if these are males/females or what the issue is. Any thoughts? There was no issue before.

They are wild so I can't easily tell gender or who is who due to how fast and not domestic they are. Catching them to clean the cage is hard enough, but do I need to separate them or will they settle down? I know they aren't solitary creatures so don't want someone to be alone 😔

What do I do with this little guy?

My apartment is old and has a deer mouse problem.

Earlier in the year I caught a female that gave birth in my live trap. I set her up in a tank with her babies, let them all grow out, and released them. A month and some change ago, I took a baby deer mouse out of my cat's mouth. He was shaken up and slobbered on but unharmed otherwise. I set him in my 10 gallon and let him do his thing. He's grown out now but I live in Maine and it's very cold outside. I figured I would just keep him through the winter and release him in the spring.

This morning my cat got another baby deer mouse. I didn't have anything ready quick enough so she dropped it on the floor when I caught her and not in a container. I had to chase it around the room and thought I lost it, only for her to almost catch it again. I finally cornered it and got it into a critter keeper. I feel so bad for terrorizing it but I didn't want my cat to kill it.

I have no other containers besides these miniscule critter keepers. This mouse who I think is female is just too little for me to release, and I don't want to put her out in the cold. I don't know what to do with her. I'm at capacity and I just hoped I guess that I wouldn't catch another wild mousey before winter was over.

Do any wildlife rehabs even take mice? Would anybody even care to help her? I don't want to release her somewhere where she's going to get inside and get trapped, poisoned, or hunted by a pet.

Would it be possible to put her in with the other wild deer mouse? He is fully grown now and she's still a baby (or juvenile I guess?) It seems like a bad idea, I don't want them to hurt each other.

Just seeking general advice on what you might do in this scenario.

Tldr: Caught another baby deer mouse in my house, it's in a critter keeper and I have nowhere else to put it. Too cold to release and too young in my opinion. What the heck do I do with her?
