About C&C grids

I had been wanting white grids for a long time, and I finally got some and built a nice cage for my piggy, and just yesterday I introduced a teeny baby to her. But for some reason, I had never heard of the square sizes being a problem, and now I'm super worried. Is an 8x8 okay with 15cm high coroplast edges, with a baby and an adult? If not, should I order some 9x9 grids, or is 8x8 okay for adults so I can just make higher edges until the baby is bigger?

Heart disease and muscle mass

Our vet said it’s just something that happens, but I’m very concerned by how weak our boar is and how boney his rear is. As he continues to drop weight, he gets even weaker. In Dec. he started to have a raspy nasal breathing and constant sneezing. Baytril killed his gut, so he went on Doxycycline instead. A bit of sneezing here and there, but the Dec. symptoms came back over the weekend. We think it’s nasal scarring. Nasal drops and nebulization are off the table since his heart disease diagnosis. It can add liquid into the lungs. He also has soft stool and a sensitive stomach lining cause of sludge/stones we give him Sherwood tablets for. Doubtful they do anything, but surgery isn’t happening in his condition. I try to keep him on critical care, veggies, pellets, oats, and hay, but he protests all but veggies and oats. He was one of my first rescues when I started an in home rescue, so I just want to see if there’s anything else I can do besides the above and his heart meds. Some form of exercise that won’t put strain on his heart?

He’s at least 5.

Edit:

The wet nasal and chest sounds were definitely from lung fluid so he’s on meds now for that. Anything to remove sludge/stones is obviously not recommended cause of his other diagnoses. If he wasn’t on heart meds, he could take some medication for sludge. As is, both could put strain on the kidneys, so not a good idea to double that risk.

Any advice for the muscle mass or is there really nothing to get his energy up besides force feeding?

Advice needed for transporting guinea pigs

Hello everyone,
I will be moving across country in the coming months. I am moving from Far North Queensland to Victoria Australia, which is a huge move but sadly, unavoidable. I can't bare to rehome 2 male guinea pigs, as I love them to bits and feel it may be too stressful for them as I have had them for almost 2 years (since they were babies). Additionally, I'm not sure if their new home will be able to care for them as they have been accustomed to (they are very spoilt).
Unfortunately, Australian airlines don't allow any pets in the cabin unless they are support animals. This means they will need to be placed in the cargo hold during the 3 hour flight, which I know may cause them a lot of stress. However, they will be transported to and from the plane by the pet transport company that I am going through.
Another option is to use a road pet transport company. However, this will take around 5 days and they will be in the same van as up to 30 other different animals. Additionally, the vehicle may not have air-conditioning which will be particularly nasty for the pigs in the Australian summer.
It would be preferred that I drive them down, however it will be a 30-40 hour drive and my very old, beaten down car probably won't make it unfortunately. And I can't afford to rent a big van, as the trip will take me awhile by myself and will be very expensive
I'm just looking for some advice on what I should choose in this situation, as I know both transport options will have their own risks unfortunately :(. I am very scared for my pigs and want what's best for them, unfortunately I just can't afford the car rental for the drive.

New Time guinea pig Owner

I’ve been thinking about getting guinea pigs and had a few questions I couldn’t find answers to while researching.

I heard that Petsmart isn’t the best place to get them and that it’s better to adopt from somewhere like the SPCA. I’m on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada. What if my local SPCA doesn’t have any available?

I’m also looking for a good cage for them. Because of the space I have, I’d like something with two levels and a roof, since I have a cat, and I want to make sure the guinea pigs are safe and have plenty of room. Also, what’s the best brand of hay and pellets for them?

Thank you, Chae

Can we please ban pictures of dead guinea pigs?

The rainbow bridge crossing posts are fine but the ones with actual dead guinea pig pictures are to much.

What does this sound mean?

He comes and snuggles up to me when I have him out, and then makes this noise when I pet him? But also stays completely still?

I don’t know how y’all get all these costume pics with your piggies. Mine hate costumes! I can keep them on for only like a minute/just enough time to get a cute pic. Happy Halloween!

Recently adopted older guinea pig a bit smelly, is this normal?

Its not awful but its noticeable when I pick her up and the scent rubs off on my hands. She's eating, drinking, and grooming normally, but she smells bad. She has that sick guinea pig smell but everything else is 100 percent normal, so I'm wondering if its just her older age and long hair. I been keeping an eye on her for the past few weeks and she's been happy and active as usual.
