Rats Ignoring Eachother During Carrier Method

Is it normal for rats to ignore eachother during the carrier method? I'm trying to bond two rats (one from a former colony and my newest rat). They've had some problems in the past, but it was usually because the new/younger rat would run from my other rat and hide from him, leading to frustration and conflict.

I decided to try the carrier method. I've had them together in a hamster cage for a few hours now, only substrate and water (I also just added a scatter of treats). They've mostly ignored eachother and kept to separate corners, aside from some sniffing. No fighting or bites though! Is this normal? Will boredom/stress eventually push them to start interacting?

Is my rat being bullied by its cage mate?

So my 2 ratties Nori and Tofu have always loved each other but ever since Nori got injured by getting her leg caught between the bed and the wall Tofu has been terrorizing her by constantly digging into her and not leaving her alone...

Nori seems terrified of Tofu and freaks out when shes nearby, any advice?

Best ways to keep a cage less smelly/ some questions about litter training and bedding etc(pic for rat tax)

1, best type of bedding to put it the litter box to hide the smell. 2,I change there water/basic food daily/add water to there soil Pick up any poo on shelves/wipe down any wee on shelves every other day Every few days replace any wee tissue Change the fabrics in there Sputniks/chil boxes every week and then do a deep clean every two weeks. Is this to little/to much? 3 how often should I be changing the litter box during little training (picking up there poos and placing it in there so they start popping in there more) 4 I wipe them down with small animal/rat wipe each once a week and they don’t really seem to mind should I start doing it a bit more or keep at once a week? 5 best stuff to absorb urine ? Any advice would be appreciated thank you !

Is this cage suitable for rats?

I saw this cage for a good price online. Does anyone know if this would be ok for two rats?

The cage measurements are: Height: 90 cm Length: 47cm Width: 36cm

is he too fat?

i'm with my rats a lot of the time and can't see them getting bigger at all, and last time i checked with a vet he was a healthy weight. however my friends are saying he's getting to fat and i just wanted to check if i'm going blind and actually need to put him on a diet. (bic pen for scale)

What bedding has the lowest dust?

My rats have struggled with sneezing on and off for the year I've had them. They act completely themselves, still as playful as ever and no excess porphyrin. They've been to the vets numerous times, but their lungs are always clear and it's too early to treat. They sneeze a lot but no wheezing etc. it doesn't ever escalate any further than that so not much can be done. They live in sanitary conditions, and I always make sure the room is well ventilated. Their cage does not smell.

I've tried both bedmax and paper based but they're both too dusty, even though they're highly recommended in the rat community. Bedmax is especially dusty in my experience. The only thing that works is using towels that I wash daily, this makes a huge difference to them and they rarely sneeze now. However, I know that using towels is not ideal as they need to be able to dig. I've been considering cardboard bedding but I've heard even this can be dusty because it's cut through a machine. What is actually a bedding that has virtually no dust? Can I just keep them on towels if it's the only thing that works?

Exposed bars

I don't understand why people think this is so bad for rats to walk on. I had the bars in my cage covered at first, but they would walk under the blankets anyway. Same with the platform and ramp covers. I have now taken all of it out and my rats seem perfectly fine. Eventually, I will probably take the bottom grate and tray out and put in a bin that fits in the very bottom portion but right now the way I have my cage set up is very quick and convenient for cleaning and is helpful because I have a very clingy baby. Anyway, if the bars are so bad and uncomfortable for them to walk on, why would my rats choose to walk on them even if I had them covered?

Play or Aggression?

I discovered a large cut on my baby's back the other day. He has received vet care but the vet believes it may be that his cage mate is bullying him. I don't believe I've seen any aggression, just some playing with small squeaks. I'm now worried when I return him to the main cage when he is healed that something will happen. Any advice?

Does anyone have experience with Coastal Quills in South Texas?

I'm looking for a Texas breeder to purchase rats from, and Coastal Quills came up as one of the breeders on AFRMA and I was wondering if anyone has experience with their getting rats from them and if you'd recommend them.

I’m bringing my new mischief home soon!

I’m rescue-adopting three girlies and they come home in three weeks! I am so exited! I’ve ordered their cage (Midwest Homes). And I’m looking at treats, toys, hammocks etc. Post your favorites available in the US. These girls have lived a tough life and I want to SPOIL them!

Rat having excess porphyrin after loss of cagemate

Hi everyone, I just need a bit of advice, regarding one of my rats.

Recently I had to have one of my rats put down, and now a few days later one of her cage mates behaviour and mood had changed, which I expected.

However when I came to check in on her the past few she's had porphyrin all over her arms, neck, eyes and nose, she was absolutely covered in it. She isn't wheezing or struggling to breathe so I don't think it's a respiratory issue, I thought it could be due to stress.

A weird behaviour she's also has started doing is some sort of stretch where she'll push up with her front legs, and do an action similar to nodding her head with her nose pointed up, and she does this frequently, anyone know what shes doing?

Is this normal for a rat when they are grieving? Should I be worried?
