I've worked as a rehabber before but I've never met a squirrel like this.
I've been recovering from covid and haven't been outside much with the critters. Well... One squirrel I've kept an eye out for for months REALLY missed me. Before I got sick he'd casually eat by my feet. When I stepped out for the first time in awhile he was all over me. I always wear long sleeves and pants when I go out, but he gets so excited to see me he climbs all over my hands with his little dagger claws and I get covered in scratches.
I thought he was just excited to snack, but he genuinely wants to be on me and around me.
Do I start wearing gloves or will that freak him out?
Here's a picture of Toddy- the scritchy culprit.
I would die for him.
Just in case anyone wanted an update.. My partner and I had a chat with the neighbours and they've agreed to leave the squirrels alone, so happy days!
Less happy though, my squirrels are showing up a lot less the last few days. After showing up like clockwork for a small breakfast, lunch and dinner(I make sure they still have the need to forage for their own good), they only come for one or two snacks a day now. I've been seeing other people say the same recently, that they barely see theirs atm. What on earth are the babies up to?
Approx. 10 to 11 weeks old. It isn't cold here in Ireland yet and my fear is that if I keep him until March, he'll be irreparably dependant on humans for life. He's very energetic and his instinct has moved away from crawling onto my foot / up to my shoulders and towards skittering down my leg to then run away. Gotten under the couch twice and uses every opportunity to try to make a break for it. Can shell a pistachio in seconds. My plan is to release him in a thicket of trees next to a horticultural garden, as high up as I can, in a wicker birdhouse with a load of nuts and a towel in there. Can't do a soft release.
Not sure what type of squirrel this is but so pretty
My cat hurt a baby squirrel this morning and I have it in a box now away from my cat and the other neighborhood cats that were trying to get it. I don’t know how old it is so I don’t know if I should feed it solids or puppy milks supplements. I checked it over and there is no puncture wounds it just has a hurt back leg and can’t walk on its own. What do I do??
This is Mabel at 4 weeks looking possessed as she sleeps. So cute though!
This is Mabel when she was 7 weeks learning to climb and how to fall with grace.
Highly Successful rehabbed blood sisters - rehabbed and released. One sister giving the other a back rub while the other sploots. They r still going strong over 3 yrs later ☺️😁 Btw, she did actually rub her back for several minutes. Squirrels r amazing!
Found 4 baby squirrels that fell from a really high nest at the park.. I placed them in a beanie I had and left them in hopes mama would come back (it was really cold and people said they were there for a bit). About 4 hours passed and we went back to check and mom was nowhere in sight and it was already dark out… So I brought them in my home to keep them safe from coyotes and other night predators. I will be taking them back to the same spot in the morning hoping the mama will come back.. but in the mean time, should I be feeding these little ones or just keep them warm?
If the mom doesn’t come back tomorrow, I will be giving them to a rehab.. but I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing at the moment to ensure their survival until I can get them to where they need to be..
I found what looks to be a 6-7 week old baby squirrel, it's visibly injured with two little puncture wounds on either sides of it's face, I suspect was the neighborhood cat. I own large dogs and I think a bite from them would have killed it so I know it wasn't them. We waited around for mom, but I was more afraid of the cat returning to finish what it started. Unfortunately, the rehab center around us said they're overflowed, and we'd have to wait for them to call us. They informed we leave it in a box...and I don't want to do that. We're animal people and would want to do whatever we can to make this little guy seem comfortable. I went online, it states to not feed any water but only electrolytes which we did, he latched on to the little bottle pretty well, and I also went in and cleaned the wounds on either side of his face, and applied a topical ointment we had for our dogs for minor cuts. He seemed to calm down quite a bit after that. I warmed up a wool sock with rice in it so it could cuddle up to it and warm up. He occasionally starts squeaking, an I'm afraid to bring him back outside in the box in hopes of his mom coming to get him but knowing he's injured he could easily fall pray to that cat again...
This is also my concern, since picking him up, he's had heavy rapid breathing and his forehead seems to be pulsating with every breath, just in and out, it stops when he drinks, and also when he slows down his breathing. I'm not sure if this is due to the head injury? Or if it's normal in baby squirrels that are stressed? To my it seems like it's the injury.
Anyways, is there anything different I should be doing at least until morning. I do have puppy formula, which I can try an feed him either tomorrow if he makes it or later tonight I just don't want to pester him anymore than what he's already been through.
Mustard’s been extra friendly recently and is always happy to stop by for treats and scratches while I watch her little ones making their first explorations out the nest 🥰
on vacation in Florida at Disney with my family and this gal came right up to us in the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge portion of the park. seemed to be foraging things for her nest. she was so friendly🥰
They mess with her all the time…just out of reach!
