/r/rabbitry reopened

I have been granted mod status of /r/rabbitry and am closing down this sub.

This sub was created when a renegade mod nuked the old /r/rabbitry sub, now that I've been able to restore the old posts there and reopen it, this sub is redundant.

Show name ideas for my pedigrees

I mainly raise my rabbits for meat, but I do also show and the rabbits that I do show need names for their pedigrees. Coming from a more show type back ground I don't want to do simple names for their pedigrees. I find it more fun and unique to put "silver oaks queen of hell" on a pedigree vs just "silver oaks Lilith"

That being said, I need themes and ideas if anyone has any. I have 4 separate litters and each needs a different theme. 1 is 3 kits, I may only keep 2 however as the 3rd is lacking in loin. Another litter has 2 boys im keeping, the last 2 are just 1 kit each.

I'm thinking of doing beattles songs for the litter of 3, but have no idea on what to do for the others. Any and all ideas will be deeply appreciated.

baby rabbit issue

Hi all. I live in Florida and have just begun breeding rabbits. They are colony caged and were doing great. About 2 weeks ago we started noticing our 4 and 6 week old kits were getting odd symptoms and dying. We have had 2 different litters, different mothers same father. They begin just looking a bit lethargic, not eating, not drinking, then they have a head tilt and begin rolling.  It then progresses to not being able to control any movement and eventually will just lay on its side til it passes. All adults are perfectly fine but we started with 12 kits and as of today have 4 left. We'd lose a couple, a few days would go by, then lose a few more, then a few more days, then 2 more. I have treated with ivermectin, corid and panacur. Nothing is working so far. From lethargic to death is usually only, at most, 12 hours. The vet says an autopsy but we have already buried the deceased ones. I was hoping maybe someone would have some insight for me. I'd take any advice I can get.

I found this in my rabbit’s cage. What is this? Idk where it came from. Is it miscarriage or something. But I didn’t know she was even pregnant.

It’s like a meaty bloody piece of meat

Giant Breeds

Hi everyone! Does anyone here raise giant breed rabbits or have good sources for giant specific raising? I'm still in the early phases of building my rabbitry for my giant angoras and their temporary housing is fine for the time being, but all of the guides regarding building that I'm finding only detail for standard size rabbits or smaller. I'd love to pick someone's brain regarding the different requirements raising giants.

Any Recommendations for Ear Mite Medications I can get online preferably through Amazon? Thanks :)

One of my bunnies unfortunately has some pretty bad ear mites and it looks like it came from his previous owners as none of my other rabbits have any. I’ve never treated this before, any brand recommendations would be helpful, thanks

Keeping breeders together m/f

I have a question, if I wanna breed my rabbits I read it's recommended to keep thrm in seperate cages unless you are wanting them to nate, why is that?

FYI- I know they will mate, any other insights on why breeding rabvits shouldn't be kept together?

Pregnant rabbit

Pregnant rabbit

my rabbit is currently 29 days pregnant. I saw her trying to build her nest 2 days ago but she seemed to stop (running around with hay in her mouth )., should I worry?! I have a nesting box she seems to like to mess with but I’m not sure if she’s going to use it when she gives birth? What should I do tonight to prepare for the possibility of her giving birth tonight? I read online that rabbits sometimes eat their young so should I be worried for that? I’ve had a bad experience with that before. Thank you .

(x-post to r/meatrabbitry) Has anyone fed a total or partial diet of azolla?

It's an amazing plant! I have been migrating my chickens over to it, they are at about 50/50 right now with their other feed, but they love it, it's easy to cultivate and is super good for them. I haven't started my rabbits yet, but from what I've been reading, rabbits can also be on a 100% azolla diet. Has anyone tried it?

Show season 2020

Hi everyone!

Hope your winter has been treating you well! Are any of you starting to make plans for your show season this year? The rabbit club I was in kicked off our region’s show season with an early February show every year - Smoky Hill RBA’s Valentine’s show. What are some of your favorite shows to go to?

Winter with rabbits

Hi folks! Just checking in on how people are doing with their rabbits over the winter months in the northern hemisphere? Anyone struggling with icy water dishes? Have any tricks for making winter chores better?

State/National Convention season

This time of year is convention season and I thought it might be good to work to build this sub with informational posts.

What do you always try to bring with you to convention?

We always tried to bring our nail trimmers, brush, and folding chairs (at least for state convention). Always brought Neosporin (good for you AND the animals if someone surprised you with sore hocks after you got there). We ended up with one of those plastic coated wire with a carpet square storage things and that was our “show box”.

Feed sources in smaller quantities

I used to raise rabbits when I was a kid (10 years or so until I graduated high school) and we would buy about 300lbs of feed a month from the local grain co-op. One of our fellow breeders had their own grain blend and enough people used it that the co-op kept it on hand.

Nowadays I have one Netherland Dwarf (instead of the army of French Lops I had) and I couldn’t go through a 50lb bag of food in a year unless I really tried. What do people do for feed when needing smaller quantities? I find the rabbit food you can get from pet stores pretty lacking and pretty powdery. Thanks!

How to treat sore hocks?

Anyone have a good treatment for Sore Rabbit Hocks? I am not interested in fancy medicine that must be prescribed, I am interested in the old ways of treating animals and cures that I can find locally in a supermarket and if I have to a feed store.

Rabbit poop for compost/fertilizer...

So... I’m trying to fertilize a garden crop. I’m unable to find information about what I need to do to separate the urine or if I even NEED to separate it.

Our rabbits have a potty that they use but they do both in the same pot. The poo smells so much like ammonia that we are afraid to use it in the garden.

Do I need to do anything to this poo or is it ok?

Thanks!
