Used Car Sales Recommendations

Does anyone have a recommendation for a used car dealership or alternative to sell my jeep to? We're moving off island and don't have a lot of time, we haven't had a lot of traction on facebook and as time presses we're looking for a quicker sale. There are so many used car dealerships and I know there are probably some good and bad ones. Any help is appreciated! 🤙

First time visitor - question about getting around and what we need to do

Hi all, I’ve never been to Oahu before but my wife and I are considering a trip this June and I’m really excited about it.

We’d be traveling with our son (11 years old) and Italian exchange student (17 years old) and probably staying in/near Waikiki.

If we’re there for a week would you recommend that we rent a car, or are there enough public transportation and Uber/taxi options to get us anywhere we want to go?

Also, any suggestions on what we should see/do while we’re there would be very much appreciated. We love the outdoors so we’re excited about hiking, snorkeling, etc. We’d also like to explore the art and culture of the island and see important historical locations.

Thanks in advance.

Things to do with an infant in Waikiki

Hi all! We're visiting Waikiki next week with a 10 month old for a wedding and would like to keep our little one engaged. Not really into doing the standard tourist stuff as a lot of it seems not too baby focused. Any cool places we can visit that local parents take their kids for fun?

Early Morning Sports Bar

Looking for a sports bar or really any restaurant or bar that will have a TV and be playing the Knicks game. It’s on at 7am locally on a Sunday morning. Perhaps a good breakfast spot with TV’s?

Music everywhere

So I’ve hiked a lot of the trails on the island. I’ve noticed that no matter where I hike almost every hiker I run into is packing a Bluetooth speaker and playing music. Sometimes fairly loud music. I don’t remember this on the east coast. Is this a specific Hawaiian thing?

Know any good spots to read?

Looking for a place for me and my partner to just sit and read, like a cafe with comfy seating or something similar. Preferably not a starbucks type place but cozier.

Favorite salons for curly hair?

I'm a girl with type B curls. I don't trust people who don't regularly do curly hair. The people I prefer are taken. Any recommendations?

Shipping household goods to mainland

Kid is preparing to move to Montana for school. Does anyone have recent experience to share about shipping additional boxes or plastic containers on airlines or UPS? Just wondering what airlines and mail services are willing to tolerate (and at what price) these days. We likely would do a combination of both based on what he takes.

Review of Arancino di Mare

My husband and I booked a reservation for Friday night (last night) based on all the wonderful reviews. We’re here for a couple days from another island where we live and we’re excited to have Italian.

The waiter was nice but would disappear for 30 minutes or longer, didn’t refill waters, and would forgot to bring us drinks we ordered.

Okay. So not bad. You might be thinking the food will be worth it.

My uni was slimy, very bad smelling, and so gross. I thought maybe it was just me, since I haven’t had it before but if it was any other seafood I would have thought it was bad.

Well. Yep. There’s a reason I only had a few bites…. Stomach cramps and vomiting have ensued, high fever. But the uni wants out. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but then again maybe not.

So would I go back? No.

Pickleball Court Recommendation

Hi Friends!

I like pickleball and I’ll be traveling to Oahu in the next few weeks from SoCal, specifically staying near Waikiki.

Where are your favorite courts to play at?

Thank you!

Is there anywhere that does ACH transfers over 5k?

All the banks want $75 bucks to wire transfer over 5k. Everyone keeps telling me ACH transfers are super common and extremely cheap but no banks in Hawaii that I know of offer external ACH transfers

Recommendations for retail demo/construction?

Aloha, I have a ~1600 sq ft retail space downtown Honolulu that I need some demo/renovation done in. Nothing major - flooring, removing walls, maybe a little build out. Company recommendations? MUST be certified with insurance.

Waikiki beach hotel recommendations

Trying to decide where to stay

Beachfront and easy beach access is the top priority followed by at least somewhat modern rooms

Looking at Outrigger Waikiki beach and Moana surf rider but not in love with either of them. Any insight would be appreciated !!

Teachers- How Bad/Not Bad Are Private School Parents?

So there was a post awhile back on a lifestyle blog essentially about the accuracy (or lack thereof) of media portrayals of various jobs. One person commented:

“Former private school teacher – Big Little Lies felt uncomfortably accurate (minus the murder!). The queen bee parents, the obscene wealth, the politics, the parents nosing into how the school handled other people’s children.. still makes me shudder!” Others agreed.

Oahu/Hawaii teachers- is this accurate or are local parents a bit more laid back? I imagine it will depend a bit on the school, etc., but as a parent considering private school in the future I’m curious to see if anybody is willing to spill the beans.

So, what do the police actually do?

Every time I've called the police (for sketchy or aggressive individuals/theft/domestic disturbances/illegal fireworks/etc), they never show up.

I never see them pull people over. Not for speeding, driving slow in the left lane, texting and driving, etc.

I regularly see 5-10 cars a day with an issue with either their headlights, tail lights, or brake lights (and I don't do a lot of night time driving). So many people drive with no headlights, and on THREE separate occasions I've seen cars with completely non-functioning brake lights.

So, do the police here actually do anything? It's giving GTA cop vibes (they don't actually pursue anything unless you hit their car or shoot someone). Bunch of NPC's.

Entering state parks for free using library passes?

Saw this in another post. Does that apply to Oahu libraries? Last time I went the library in Ewa was struggling to get anyone to come.

Blockbuster Video Hunt (Pokemon Snap Station)

I am searching for a Pokémon Snap station to buy that was in many blockbuster video locations in 1999-2000. Does anyone remember if the locations on Oahu had one? Or know anyone with one? I attached a photo of what they look like, mahalo!

Ho-hum… what to do on a rainy day off

So far… I’ve taken an online quiz, cleaned out the fridge, did the dishes, talked the dog out of playing in the mud. I’m near Lanikai. What else can I do? Mahalo

Grief of leaving Hawaii

I moved to Hawaii almost 21 years ago. It was my dream come true when I arrived here and I have been living my dream since that time. I've been so fortunate to become a social worker here and learn from incredible leaders and cultural practitioners and just love this land and her people so much. Have amazing friends, good job, great apartment.

However, at this point in my life I feel like I need to move away and it's not wanting to leave but rather a feeling like I need to. When I look online about when to know if it's time to relocate nothing quite hits because leaving Hawaii is a special kind of grief and it's very different than moving from elsewhere.

For people who feel a deep connection and love for Hawaii, and have moved away, can you share with me how you moved through that? Feelings of loss? I read an email yesterday offering me a job interview and I immediately broke down crying because it's starting to be real. I'm trusting my gut and taking a leap of faith, but my heart is breaking.

Thank you so much in advance for sharing your heart.

Edit: the responses to this post exemplify why it's such a conflict to go.. thank you everyone for so much kindness and warmth. It's really quite moving. All the aloha 🙏🏼

Century Park Plaza

Looking into apartments in the Pearl City area and this place keeps catching my eye. Unfortunately from some reviews (many of which are years old), I have seen mentions of tenants getting fined for dumb things like computer LEDs shining in the window, wrong outside bulb color, etc. I was hoping to get some real feedback from people who live/ have lived there before and to see their actual experience. I'm a pretty introverted person, so I don't suspect I'll have many issues, but I'd hate to get locked in for a year and it turn into a nightmare.

A bonus would be any tips or a resource on being able to check out these kind of things before moving into a place. How do people vet apartment complexes before moving in? Finding out average utility costs? Standing around outside to ask residents that come and go seems like a bad idea lol.
