ʻEwa Beach O'ahu

Aloha and welcome to /r/EwaBeachOahu, a place for anything local, like news, pics, sports, events or just stop by, talk story. It's not a place for stink eye or downvote menehunes.

ʻEwa Beach or simply ʻEwa is a census-designated place (CDP) located in ʻEwa District and the City & County of Honolulu along the leeward coast of Oʻahu in Hawaii. The word ʻewa means "crooked" or "ill-fitting" in Hawaiian. The name comes from the myth that the gods Kāne and Kanaloa threw a stone to determine the boundaries, but it was lost and later found at Pili o Kahe. Hawaiian settlement on the ʻEwa Plain dates back at least to the 12th Century C.E., at which time Kanaka maoli expanded the main channel of Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor) before creating fishponds and terraced agricultural fields in the surrounding area. Scholars have recognized ʻEwa's ancient fishponds as exemplary evidence of Native Hawaiian ingenuity.

Should the classification for 911 Dispatcher be labeled as 1st responders or kept at Clerk/receptionist?

For years, our Country has seemed to not fully understand the difference between 1st Responder or Clerk or receptionist as a profession classification. Now, the differences are extremely important for a lot of reasons, 1 important reason is : Being classified as a 1st Responder will change the pay rate and how to get raises will change, as a Clerk or receptionist the way pay increases and benefits are limited on accessing it, with 1st Responder label it changes the entire playing field.

But here is my thought and I would love to hear about others - When a person makes that emergency call to 911 the VERY first person you hear is the dispatcher, when it's sorted out to what type of call that is received, the dispatcher will immediately (or should) start assessing the situation with the a barrage of questions, once that's sorted out, that Dispatcher will then start giving instructions to the caller what is best for the scene/situation, so technically the dispatcher is the 1st responder thru the caller's description of what is going on. I dispatched for a 911 center to pay my college education and enjoyed everything about it except the title of clerk or receptionist and not the true title of 1st responder.

Do you agree or disagree and why do you feel the way you answered.

HINT: There is no right or wrong reply only a way to express your opinion on a very sensitive issue.

Tuesdays Topic of Interest is about "Foster care and DHS" and how Federal funding was not approved.

The State's social media and News media platforms are buzzing about how Federal Funding to aid DHS and Foster care was not approve due to statements submitted to the Federal Agency on the number of "unlicensed Foster Homes" there are in Hawaii and the still places those in need of care in those foster homes. (you can read up more of the requirements on the DHS site under "Family Foster care, it's quite detailed)

What really upsets me when I was reading the article (Very good article in Civil Beat), was how the state gave extensions to those homes needing to certify or recertify with the State extensions averaging out to 311 day, and instead of moving the foster children in that household to another certified home until the requirements were met by the home they left those children in their care and abuse was reported amongst those left behind. Please share your thoughts

August 8 2023 Maui disaster

Two weeks ago - Maui and Lahaina suffered one of the worse Worse Wildfires in 100 yrs. I would like to make everyone aware that this happened on Maui and it can happen to any of the other Islands with the drought drying out all the forests, Brush so changes have to be made, putting Utility lines underground, be more strict as catching the violators of illegal fireworks and trash burning.

My heart goes out to the people of Maui and Lahaina and for as bad as this is, all the other islands need to show support as well as learn from it, Oahu Leeward side has already had 2 wildfires that have burnt over 60 Acres and caused damage to the wildlife, So please feel free to post here how or what your feeling, if you know anyone or lost anyone in the Maui Apocalypse post it, DONT post the name but let us know so that they can be kept in prayer,

Keiki's back to School this month ?

As a parent of two grown boys, and living in Hawaii, I feel as one of the new Mods for this sub its my morale duty to post the start dates for many of the schools, and remind everyone of important things.

Back to school starts for most of the Public Schools in EwaBeach / Oahu - 1st Day of classes is August 7, 2023, and with the bus driver shortages my suggestion is make arrangements to make sure your keiki have a safe mode of getting to school.

Drivers please drive sensible and safe, look all ways when approaching school districts as well as housing areas, REMEMBER the first day is going to be full of Excitement and less worry about oncoming traffic and careless drivers, Remember the girl who lost her life this time last year down behind McKinley HS.

The driver was speeding, and didn't stop to render aide, then after further information was released he had like 14 priors of driving without a license , DUI, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Which tells you, where our Legal systems priorities are with dealing offenders such as this.

POI OR NO POI ?

Reading thru the other Hawaii subs, there was a pic of 2 bowls of poi. Now, this spurred a question or two.

Now, there is no right or wrong to the questions its just something that has my "Monkeys" ( Brain generators) running in circles.

(1) What is the best way to enjoy Poi , and do you enjoy it with every meal ?

(2) Is it wrong to eat Poi with sugar topping or Milk mixed in ? Our mother who also was a local and absolutely loved her Poi up to her final days. She would either eat the Poi dusted with Sugar and if she didn't use Sugar, she would use a bit of whole milk. Now, is this right or wrong ? or does it even matter ?

would love to see what others think.

Violence On the Westside .. Why?

Its becoming a daily reality that someone is hurt on these Islands and what I can see is things are only destine to get worse if people of Hawaii don't start coming together our definition of "Aloha" will be like every other word used which basically nothing,

We have Fentanyl dealers who are behind bars now, and yet still have product being delivered while they it in Jail, 8 grams of Fentanyl with street value worth $50k and yet if they would been home to accept the product who knows how many more of the people would of died or be laying on a respirator for getting caught up in such stupidity

There is a teen girl fighting for her life at Queens after being shot in the Head by what I'm guessing a truck load of trouble makers and mistaken identity, Mis taken, identity. My heart goes out to this young lady and her family.

The reason I wanted to write this is because people need to understand these are NOT isolated issues which everyone on this island is vulnerable to losing a love one and its time we all need to get involved, but how? How can we the people of Hawaii stop these senseless acts,

HPD is understaffed and even if they had enough Officers I don't think they are trained well enough to be out there to say "Enough is Enough"

Again, this is happening all over this great State and its only going to get worse if the Locals and Residents step up and take Action. The Young lady shot in the head opened my mind up to what are the steps one can take to keep things like this from getting more out of control.

Feel free to comment, and lets see what we can conjure something.

SCOTUS OR NOT TO SCOTUS ?

Today I'm going to start a post that will make you go Humm, I will close it out each day with a question that has no right or wrong answer and you shouldn't feel like you must answer, but will make you go "Humm" , Reply if you like or laugh if you will but overall enjoy.

Today's Topic is Supreme Justice of the US or otherwise known as 'SCOTUS"

In the past 72 hrs, SCOTUS have taken what confidence most Americans had left in our leaders and have grounded it up to look like dirt. Yesterday it was the College's and Universities with the Affirmative action, they attacked and then today SCOTUS shot down Bidens Student Loan forgiveness program and Starting in September everyone with outstanding Student Loans will have to start working their butts off to survive. These and then to put the cherry on the top is " SCOTUS have sided with a web designer by not having to make a website for a Gay couple. Where has the world gone too.

so here is my closing " We as American people / and Human beings would be much better off with no SCOTUS and if there comes a time where something needs to be handled by we would hold a lottery to draw 9 random names, put them in a room with just the facts of the case and whoever was involved, allowed them to handle this, whatever the end result is that's what the people must live by no appeals, to prolonging anything.?" How many agree this will make you go "Humm"

Want to talk Story ? I'm a new Mod

Aloha O'hana, I just recently volunteered to become one of the Moderators for the Ewa Beach/Oahu community, I want everyone that stops by this Sub (Ewa Beach) to know I will always have time to talk story with hopes of making friends and just giving that "Aloha" that the State in general is missing. I've lived in Hawaii on this same Island since 1993 so I would hope to be help in any way one may need it.

But if I can help anyone in this Community please let me know, you can either message me so that when I come on I can work on setting up a reply. Thank you again, and lets try to make new friends.
