I am raising painted ladies. They've all begun emerging from chrysalis which is so exciting. However sometime while I was out this evening, one of the butterflies got its wings wet in the nectar solution I had set up in a dish and it seems to have fallen over flat onto the bottom of the hut. Its wings are flat and it is on its back. It is not moving. Previously when I've noticed a butterfly or two get stuck, I've nudged them with the end of a pencil or a q-tip and they climb on for a ride or I've been able to flip them over. However this one seems glued to the bottom of the hut and I can't help it. I don't think it's alive anymore. Should I extract it or leave it until I release all the others? I'm worried leaving it in there will make the others sick. What is the right course of action in this situation?
Found this on a truck bed I was installing and decided to hatch it with my kid, what sort of bug can I expect? Around 1/2" long and wiggling. Located in the bay area, CA thanks!
I am a total beginner at this, but I wanted to check with butterfly enthusiasts about how to do this. I live in an apartment and would love to have some milkweed on my balcony to feed caterpillars and such.
does this actually benefit local butterfly populations?
I live in Michigan and it’s still quite cold here so when should I start my plants? I have a source nearby I can get plants from, but I also am up for trying to grow it from seeds. Any tips for this?
Thank you! 🦋
Dose anyone have any experience with painted lady caterpillars? I have 2 containers of them I got for my son through his school but I have no experience with them. They are currently pupating one fell and is not moving I'm assuming dead. The other's are still on the lid but the few that are making A chrysalis seem to be cutting off a part of themselves? Is that supposed to happen? I have 3 of them that seem like part of the caterpillar got cut off and left out? I hope these guys are OK...
I was at a farmers market today. There was a dude selling caterpillars in a clear plastic container (vented of course). There was a plant inside and the concept was the caterpillar would go through the metamorphosis process and then you release it when it evolves. I found one on Google but they just threw some leaves in a mason jar. Anyone have any input on this?
I have painted lady caterpillars. 5 in one container and 8 in the other. They came that way when I ordered them. I haven't opened it at all cause it says not to. Alot of them are starting to J right now and I'm not sure if he fell or if he started cocooning on the ground but this morning I found one of my caterpillars on the ground half cocooned. I'm not sure if there is anything I can do for him.ive read things that say you can move them if your gentle but with 4 currently other J-ing caterpillars on the lid I don't think it's possible for me to open it and help him. He is not currently moving so I'm not even sure if he is alive but if he is alive, what are the odds of him being able to finish and survive being on the ground like that?
I’ve only noticed this only with the Zebra Longwing Butterflies. They’ll sit on the chrysalis of another Longwing, sometimes 3 at a time. They don’t seem to be damaging it in anyway, but it’s still peculiar to me.😅 Anyone have any insight? (I’d attach a video but this community doesn’t allow it)
Hi, I need some advice with some Owl butterflies I’m keeping. One of them has an antenna sticking out of its pupa (has been like so for a few hours) and it hasn’t been doing much. Another butterfly has emerged since… I’m not sure what to do and is there any way I can help it? Does it need helping?
As an amateur photographer I’m so happy with this picture :)
