    Buying laptop

Just found a laptop 32gb ddr4 ram, ssd 2tb Quadro m2200 and i7 7700hq, the only bad part is that it's bios is locked, it's priced at 260€ second hand, I think it's a good deal

    Notebook Don't Work

A few months ago I bought an Asus Vivobook Go 15 notebook. To be more specific, it came with Linux since it was the cheapest version. So I decided to install Windows 10. The installation went well. I followed the steps exactly and everything was working. Or almost everything. When I tried to use the webcam, I saw that the computer was not capturing sound. So I tried everything, and I still try. But I can't find a driver that works. Also, the battery, which should last 6 hours, doesn't last more than 1:30. It has these two defects, plus not all the settings are on it, such as the advanced power options. It doesn't record audio, the options are missing and it only stays plugged in while charged. I'm really disappointed. I don't know if I did something wrong, but if you have any tips, let me know.

    Custom build idea and question.

Hey this one's more for the customisers and techies out there, I'm an experienced PC builder, however, I'm very much into retro tech, even my gaming PC is built into a retro case with an old PS2 keyboard (because it still works perfectly fine just fits the aesthetic).
However, I've had in my mind and idea of getting one of those really old laptops like a tough book or satelite laptop, gutting it and putting modern laptop parts in, obviously id have to find a replacement screen, and make some modifications to the shell to fit the correct ports ect, however I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this before? and if I can have some pointers, in particular im wondering if like PC motherboards, do laptop mainboards have standardised screw positions like how pc mobo's do? or do all the manufacturers do their own thing? how much pain am I in for pursuing this idea? Also if this is not the right reddit to ask please let me know which would be best.

What would you do if you were me - Laptop resell or keep?

Hi there, I need you to help me decide since I cannot decide for myself.

I bought a laptop this March 2024, it is an Asus Vivobook x1605

    • Laptop Model: X1605VA-MB195
    • Processor: Intel Core i9-13900H
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4
    • Storage: 1TB M.2 NVMe
    • GPU: Intel Iris Xᵉ Graphics
    • Display: 16.0-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) 16:10 aspect ratio IPS-level Panel 60Hz refresh rate 300nits 45% NTSC colour gamut Anti-glare display TÜV Rheinland-certified Non-touch screen
    • Battery Life: 42WHrs, 3S1P, 3-cell Li-ion
    • Operating System: Windows 11

The laptop I had before was a Dell Inspiron 3521, it had an i5 third-gen U processor that sucked, but I made it work with an SSD upgrade and had it for 12 years, that's why when I got my new laptop this year, I was only focused on it having a great processor, but I ran into a new problem which is: BATTERY LIFE SUCKS!

this new laptop at best gives me 2 to 2.5 hours of battery life on regular use.

Here is where I need your help:

If you were me, how would you rectify your bad decision?

Keep the new laptop and operate it as a mobile workstation, knowing that I won't be enjoying its full performance compared to a PC nor would I enjoy the mobility factor due to its battery life being so low.

Or would you resell it and take the 30-40% loss in its price, get a balanced laptop and or a mid-PC and forget about it through time.

Things I like about the laptop I have: [great performance, really nice display, relatively high specs]

Things I hate about it: Battery life

Things that are somewhat annoying but not a deal-breaker: it not having an external GPU (I don't game that much)

    >>> So, what would you do?

got my power brick fixed my laptop's battery now drains while charging....

The cable that physically plugs into my laptop, an Ideapad gaming 3, got cut recently. As I needed it repaired ASAP for a college project, I turned to a local PC repair shop, and they only changed that cable. However, now my laptop's battery drains while doing extensive stuff such as gaming. Could it be that the cable is trash and doesn't deliver the full wattage or something? help, plz.

Can I fix this old laptop screen?

    hello

I just spent 50 dollars on a new battery for this old laptop (ultrabook), Toshiba Z930

It was worth it because its performance was great for the use I have for it, basically internet browsing and videos

Two days later I see this "black moon" on the top left of the screen

A new screen is out of question

Is it possible I fix it at home myself? I hope so, please tell me what to do

    Thanks!

Folder with my name on desktop with needs adim permissions to delete - Why? -What is it? Why can't I move to new location?

This is a new asus laptop. I don't remember making this file. I just want to move it off my desktop or delete. What is it? Why is it there? Every time I try to move it, it just creates a shortcut instead of moving the file itself. Why would it need admin permission to delete? I could give it admin permission but I'm concerned about deleting something I don't understand.

The folder is labeled with my name. It's got a bunch of other folders in it like: desktop, downloads, documents, pictures... I'd rather a folder like this be in MyPC rather then clogging up my desktop, but every time I try to move it a red circle with a slash through it pops up. I'm so confused why does a folder with access to my desk top have to be on my desktop? Wouldn't it make more sense for it to be in MyPC?

I just want a clean desktop or to choose for myself what files go there.

Recommendations for usb 4 / thunderbolt dongle hubs? (display, network etc)

im looking for a thunderbolt hub that has the following

    • Video output
      • HDMI
      • Displayport
      • USBC-DP alt mode
    • USB ports (preferrably c)
    • RJ45

This is a good example, though i wish it had Displayport instead of VGA port.

    https://a.co/d/0xDBwIZ

but i cant find really anything other than this one.

note: i dont want a powered one (PD passthrough is ok, just no power brick required)

Is using my laptop plugged in all the time safe for the battery?

Is using my laptop plugged in all the time safe for the battery?

I use an Acer Nitro 5 laptop which allows me to cap the battery at 80%, I don't run my laptop one battery alone, whenever i use my laptop I just turn on the charger and use my laptop . Have been doing this since I bought it , about 4 years now.

Going strong without any issues. Am worried if this damages the battery or does this cause it to swell up eventually, so asking here for any answers.

Also wondering since I capped my battery, where does the laptop draw power from when plugged in, the wall directly or thru the battery. So does a laptop discharge simultaneously while charging?

Is there any way to completely run on wall bypassing the battery since I can't remove my battery. I remember removing my mom old laptops battery when I was a child 😂😂, prolly could run without a battery with the power from wall alone.

    Any ideas appreciated

    Thanks

    Which laptop do I keep?

Im in the process of pairing down just about everything I own. The next section up on the chopping block is laptops. I had 3, sold the macbook air, and am now down to 2 pc laptops.

    They are:

    -> Acer 15.6" gaming laptop. 12th gen i5 1200H / 32gb RAM / 2tb ssd / RTX Nvidia 3050TI 4gb gddr6/ 1080p screen 165hz

I originally got this one to act as a desktop replacement and occasionally carry around if I travel, etc. Overall works very good. I like the smoothness the larger amounts of RAM gets and I have the least money into it. I think I originally paid $750 for it new.

    -> Asus Zephorus G14 14" (2024 Base Model) AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS / 16gb DDR5 RAM (soldered) / RTX 4060 / 1tb ssd / OLED 3k 120hz screen

I wasnt planning on buying this one earlier this year but I was just perusing Best Buy and found this in the returns. The stacked discounts on it were wild. I picked it up to have a somewhat powerful yet compact laptop that fits into my professional leather bag. I can turn the lights off on the lid and it passes as a stylish laptop. The fixed ram gives me pause though for the next number of years.

I do heavy office work, tons of web apps and tabs open, basic video editing, photo editing etc.. Just hoping someone can give me an opinion outside my own which I should keep. I appreciate your time.

    Thank You,

    R

Do laptops need to be shut down every day?

Laptops need to be shut down every day when not in use.

Laptops are not tablets, let alone mobile phones. Although they are used in similar ways, they are completely different devices when it comes to the issue of turning on and off.

Although mobile phones and tablets also need heat dissipation, most of them rely on the thermal conductivity of the material itself to dissipate heat, while laptops are different. There will be at least one fan inside the computer. If the computer is not turned off and is turned on for a long time, the fan will keep turning. Even if it is an original fan, although the quality is good, it will wear out if it is turned on for a long time.

Therefore, if you don’t need to use the laptop, there is no need to keep it turned on, and the so-called standby mode cannot replace the shutdown operation. In addition, scheduled shutdown will give the computer a rest and extend the service life of other internal accessories.

In addition, most laptops have been equipped with solid-state drives and their memory has long been equal to or exceeded 8GB. Even the latest Windows 11 system will not occupy more than 4GB of memory. Therefore, even if the laptop is turned off, it will only take a few seconds to boot up if there is no problem with the system. There is no need to keep the computer turned on to save a little time.

    Lenovo laptop versus Apple MacBook.

I'm going to get either a Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in1 14" 2K 16GB Memory or an Apple MacBook air 13" 16GB. In the past I have always like the Lenovo ThinkPad's and I have also owned a couple of Yoga's but I have had issues with the charging ports becoming loose and overheating issues and these laptops only seem to last me about two years now. I do like the smaller size of the Apple, I want something light weight and sturdy. How does an Apple hold up if it is accidently dropped. Lenovo's hold up well in that area. Can anyone please give me information on either of these computers?

Looking for a work laptop budget sub 2K, would like to have graphics card to run photoshop/indesign

I work in real estate and need a new laptop. My company is forcing Dell Latitude or Precision on me since it is business standard. Dell 5690 for 2,500.00 USD.

I am looking for a reliable laptop that can run photoshop and indesign with at least:

    1 TB SSD

    32 GB DDR5

    Nvidia 4050 or better

    core 7 ultra or better

A lot of the reviews I have seen for products are scaring me away from pulling the trigger. Wanted to see what your thoughts are on getting something like this.

Please help. 3 laptops doung same thing... Gotta be operator error.

Hey folks and Gurus... My folks gavr me 3 older laptops. They worked fine, but they were loaded with all my folks' stuff. I restored them to " out of the box"... And now all 3 "cannot locate" the network drivers in the machines, to reinstall. They also will recognize EVERY network, around me, but not mine.

I am NOT computer savvy. All my attempts to find and install, through internal menus/ settings, have led me in never ending loops that go nowhere. The internet is chock full shit that doesn't work, as well. And command line scares the hell out of me.

Before I pull any more hair out, I thought I'd ask for help, here. There has to be something I'm doing/ not doing, that's common to all 3...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...😎

Asus logo and Bios does not show up on screen

Hello! So i have a problem and i want to hear your opinion. I recently broke the screen of my Asus Vivobook S16(oled sadly) i had to change it and so i brought it to a service.

Basically almost everything went good (i ordered the new screen with the exact serial number code and everything, so basically the same screen) and it works fine, BUT the laptop now boots directly into the windows screen. So the OS works completly fine and everything but from what i can understand the resolution from this screen does not support the bios resolution so it simply does not show it. I cant access it and neither does the asus logo when you power the laptop shows up.

I have 2 options: change the screen anyway and try to live without accessing the bios or wait another on month or so and POSSIBLY having a chance of a laptop screen that is compatible with the bios resolution.

Keep in mind that the laptop screen is 100% the same with the exact code and everything

What do you think i should do? Thank you!

    Issue regarding F12 modes

Windows 11 auros. I cannot seem to switch my modes. fn+f12 does nothing. When FN is pressed the F12 key is the only f key that is not lit up. It is not an issue with the actual key, I have tried using alternate keyboards and it has not worked. I have tried using every key combination to lock or unlock the fn function. I cannot find the options in the BIOS settings. I have the newest game driver installed and i have tried restarting plenty of times. Please help!
