Tips, PSAs, & Resources

Low Quality TN Displays

A lot of laptops today still use low quality TN displays. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p.

Comparison pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notable models:

  • Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.
  • Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available.

There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many IPS displays are far from perfect still.

False High-Res Displays

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models.

Notable models:

  • EUROCOM Tornado F5/F5W/X4C
  • Clevo w/ Samsung/LG '4K' 15.6"

Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K.

Confusing CPU branding

U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. More info is available here.

Looking for a laptop for an interior design course.

Looking for a laptop I can take to university which will be able to run Autocad, sketch up, photoshop and potentially other 3d software applications in the years the come.

Ideally the laptop will have a reasonable battery life so I can use while in class, but will be able to charge during the day so don't need it to last all day.

The course lead has suggested a gaming laptop so I've been looking at the Acer Nitro 5, any thoughts or suggestions from the community?

These are the two I'm currently considering :

Looking for feedback on Lenovo LOQ R7 7435HS + 4060 setup under 80k INR for casual gaming and editing [🇮🇳]

Hey all, I'm looking at getting a Lenovo LOQ with these specs: AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS, RTX 4060 (6GB), 24GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. Main uses would be casual gaming, video editing, and Entertainment (YouTube, movies, etc.). I’ve got an 80k INR budget, and this seems like a good fit. Just wanted to hear if anyone's had experience with this model, or if there are any alternatives I should consider around this price.

Thanks in advance!

Need laptop suggestions for personal use

Hi all, I'm a professional looking for a personal laptop for below use cases:

  • personal programming projects (Python)
  • drawing/image editing (Photoshop or any other app)
  • ML projects in the future (optional)

Below are the specs I'm looking for:

  • Budget: Up to INR 1.3L
  • Processor: Intel core 5/7 or Intel core ultra 5/7, U series
  • GPU: Not required
  • Display: 14 inch, Touch screen (with stylus support), 180 degree rotation preferred RAM: 16GB (minimum)
  • Storage: 512GB/1TB (preferably 1TB)
  • Refurbished/used: No
  • Other requirements: Windows OS, fingerprint reader (optional), type C charging support, light-weight laptops preferred but willing to invest in bulkier laptops if other features are good

Here are the laptops I have already researched:

  1. HP Envy x360 - I read that HP touch screen laptops have very flimsy hinges, which was also an issue I encountered on a non-touch HP laptop that I owned, so I'm leaning away from HP
  2. Asus Zenbook 14 - I've heard a lot of negatives when it comes to this laptop, in terms of the OLED pixel burn in, refresh rate, frame drop, and the customer service being very unhelpful. This laptop would be perfect for me if it weren't for all these issues, so if anyone has any experience with this or any Asus laptop, please let me know your thoughts
  3. Lenovo Thinkbook 14 - This laptop has all the features I'm looking for but I read that it is very very less durable when compared to ThinkPad, so again, if anyone has any experience with this laptop, please help me consider or eliminate this from my choice list
  4. Lenovo ThinkPad T series - Overall, these laptops have great specs, and I'm able to customize them on the official site according to my preferences. I have used an X1 carbon previously for work, and the only issue I had was the battery backup, which was barely 4 hours. I'm not sure how the T series are in terms of performance, durability, and other features, so please share your views or experience on this

Apart from the above ones, please suggest laptops from known brands like Dell, Samsung, etc. (I'm skeptical to invest in laptops from Mi, MSI, Infinix, Zebronics, etc.).

If there are any good upcoming laptop releases I should be aware about, please share those too. I really appreciate any and all suggestions that I can get. Thank you!

Edit: I’m not aware of the performance of Snapdragon processors, I’m willing to consider them if they are comparable to Intel core

Laptop for Art Student, Under $1k & from the USA

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

  • Under 1k USD, purchasing from/in the US

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

  • Brand New

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

  • Preferably 2-in-1 that comes with its own pen. If not, any other is also OK. As for performance, I just want it to run smoothly without any crashes or time outs. Preferably around 16+ hours of battery life or more.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

  • Semi-important. Not too thin but not too thick.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

  • 14 inches to 16 inches

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

  • Desire to run almost all adobe apps, blender, toonboom, unreal engine, and Music programs such as FL studio. Basically apps that can do 3D modeling, animation, graphic design, and digital art.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

  • Not much of a gamer but maybe Fortnite & Hatsune Miku Future Tone.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

  • Screens just like MacBooks,iMacs, iPads. OLED I believe.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

  • I don’t want any Apple PCs or laptops because I want to utilize the VOCALOID2 software which doesn’t work on MacBooks or iMacs. I tried to fill this out to the best of my ability but I don’t know anything about specs or RAM or Processors. I was originally going to get the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 edge, but saw that it couldn’t optimize Premiere Pro, so I’m wary.

So many laptop options

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: under $2k, USD

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?- Refurbished/used is okay, if it's sold directly through a reputable retailer (with 1 year coverage if any issues come up)

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? performance and battery life. i usually have 10 google tabs and adobe/word open as a student, i need something that won’t overheat. for battery life ideally around 6+ hours of usage.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you? not super important, but i’d rather avoid carrying around a brick if i can.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-16 in.

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. i will be taking a GIS course for a semester of college and need something with a window operating system that can run that program,

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 16GB RAM, finger-print reader is ideal, honestly not sure what else but i do like the touchpad of my current (dying) macbook pro

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. i want something reliable, preferably to last 3-5 years +… feeling overwhelmed with the amount of options available. i want to make sure my money is well-spent

USA 1000-1400 budget Need an all purpose laptop that can run some games

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000-1400, preferably 1000 or less. Willing to stretch budget for a great deal.

• Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes.

• How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

1 – build quality, 2- performance, 3 – battery life – Looking for something to last me 5 years if possible.

• How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important. Build quality is more important than thinness or weight.

• Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Prefer around 14 inch. Will consider 15.6 but not bigger than that.

• Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate for games. Some 3d printing, maybe some audio editing, gaming and schoolwork. Also use VTT - a virtual tabletop to play D&D with friends.

• If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I have no idea about settings but games I would like to play – Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate. I don't game so whatever FPS/settings is decent will probably work for me - I don't need anything special. My current laptop can’t play those games so I’ve never tried.

• Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality and nice looking screen is important. Probably want 32GB RAM or the ability to upgrade to 32 myself. I don’t like touchscreens but again not a dealbreaker – I just won’t use it.

• Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Just want a portable laptop I can use for college that I can also try gaming on. Build quality is important as I don’t want to have to buy a new computer for a while. I like my old T450s so I was looking at T14s but open to other models/brands that are better fits.

Heavy Processing Laptop that acts as Ipad as well - for Engineering Major

Hello!

  • Country: US, budget: $1000-$1500
  • Not open to refurbs/used
  • looking for a 2-in-1 with excellent performance and 3-4 hour battery life. Good RAM as well would be preferred if possible!
  • weight and thinness don't matter much.
  • No preferred screen size.
  • I don't do video editing, but I will be doing CAD.
  • I don't game.
  • A touchpad would be ideal, but not necessary if everything else is satisfied!
  • I'm an engineering major looking to buy a new computer that can act as an iPad as well! Ideally, the computer can process heavy applications like Matlab, Excel, Word, R, etc. while also being totally foldable and with a pencil.

I currently have a Macbook (nearly 3 years and going), and I usually use pencil and paper for my classes, but it has become too time-consuming. If anyone can offer any excellent suggestions for laptops that satisfy these specs, but are heavy processors, I would be extremely grateful!

$700 Budget, light gaming & CAD on the go

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$700

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Don't care about touchscreen, build quality is semi important. good battery life when not running cad would be great, but it can be plugged in while I'm working/gaming.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not hugely important

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

16"

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming & CAD; AutoCAD/Fusion 360/Inventor

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

world of warcraft, low settings at ~45fps acceptable

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

power & display over USB C would be great but not necessary.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I work remote as an engineer and am looking for something to travel with as a personal laptop.

My main limitation is that I would like ~1440p and high refresh rate (120hz is good, 90 is acceptable)

I found an Ideapad pro 5 with a 3050 for $600 on backmarket and it ran out of stock before I could snag it. There are plenty of Legion laptops that meet all my requirements but they're priced a little too high in the $800-900 range. I had my eyes on this slim 7 but saw some bad reviews RE: intel drivers.

https://www.backmarket.com/en-us/p/lenovo-slim-7-16iah7-16-inch-core-i7-16-gb-ssd-1-gb-hdd-999-gb/6f4e78e1-2e1d-4866-8d0a-d88ed1de0f82?l=10#

Any suggestions?

Affordable Laptop for College

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Located in the US, Under $500
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Biggest Priorities are battery life and performance
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? somewhat important, I need something on the lighter side due to chronic pain, and I use a smaller backpack for school so i need it to be relatively thin too
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12.4in is preferred, could go a little smaller but nothing bigger
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Audacity (voice recording), and some games. Must be able to use Microsoft apps (word, excel, PP, ect.)
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I currently only play one PC game from steam (papa's quiz), but I am interested in getting more "party" style games, as well as osu! and zenless zone zero (this is not a big deal to me as I mainly intend to use my laptop for school and voice acting)
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? headphone jack, usb ports, basic stuff i guess?
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a couple preferences that i don't know would fit anywhere else. I need something with a simple/easy to use/learn file management system. I also currently have an Ipad, and while I don't want a Macbook, I would like something that would be not completely incompatible with ios stuff, more specifically my goodnotes app (not completely necessary but would make things a lot easier haha). I currently have a microsoft surface go 2 which worked well for the first few months but now everything takes forever to load and it dies super quickly, and I've only had it for a little less than 2 years. I want something that will last me at least 3 years without it feeling archaic. Thank you!

Looking for a reliable long-term laptop for school and light gaming

I absolutely love older ThinkPads (pre 2018ish) because they work long-term, are super durable, and are great for school and light gaming. I've been stuck using an old t450 for a while since I've been worried about getting a newer laptop. I just don't want to have to replace it after 2 years because the hardware got outdated, Windows got really sluggish, etc. I've had my laptop for about 4 years now and although it works great I know it won't work forever since it was already a bit old when I got it. I wanted to get a new laptop that I won't have to worry about planned obsolescence or big bottlenecks like some brands have, with good durability and reliability like a ThinkPad.

Requirements:

Under $1000, but as cheap as possible the better

I'm willing to buy used but I still want as new as possible

At minimum an 10th gen Intel i7 or equivalent AMD processor

Discreet graphics card comparable to or better than a GTX 1660 Super in performance

16gb+ DDR4, any speed really

SATA HDD/SSD support

Ease of servicablility in case I want to change the battery, ram, SSD etc

USB A ports

Not too thin/flimsy, sorry for the ThinkPad analogy again but about as thick as an older ThinkPad

Small enough dimensions to reasonably fit in a backpack

I´m looking to buy a Notebook/Laptop (mostly for work), any suggestions? My budget is around $800

I’m looking for a new laptop/notebook mainly for work. I´m a a graphic designer and a video editor, so it’s gotta handle Adobe software with no problem. I also do programming and game design from time to time, so it’d be great if it could run some 3D programs and development tools like Visual Studio without lag.

My budget is around $800, and while I could stretch it a bit, inflation’s hitting hard where I live, so I’d prefer to keep it as close to that as possible. I’d love any recommendations you have, especially if you’ve used something similar for design or editing work.

Looking for a decent affordable gaming oriented upgrade to my Dell Inspiron 13!

____________________

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $400-$600
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Definitely!
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Important, I don't care about 2-in1's too much, I have one now and it's nice to have but it seems to just add unnecessary cost for me, build quality is important, as long as it lasts and doesn't feel cheap, I don't mind it feeling basic, performance is the most important thing seeing as I need an upgrade from my laptop now so I can play some better games, but even still I'm not looking for anything too powerful. I want something that can last idk maybe 4+ hours? I'm not in school and I don't take my laptop out too much, but I would like to be able to work on things during a road trip or out and about if I can.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, I don't want a laptop I can't just fold up in slip in my backpack without it being too bulky, main reason why I'm looking for a laptop and not a desktop despite wanting it for gaming is because being able to take my laptop and work on other things pretty much anywhere I want is important.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything below 16" is probably reasonable, I feel like anything above that will be too bulky.
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yeah, but my computer runs pretty much everything I want to fine, other than some more intensive games.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Yes! I want to preface this by saying that my laptop right now can just barely run sea of thieves smoothly 95% on the lowest settings, and it can't run the long drive for some reason. But almost all of the games I'm interested in do run on my laptop now which is fine, but I do very much want an upgrade. The most intensive games I'd like to be able to run are games like Teardown, My Summer Car, The Outer Wilds, only game I have is Teardown so that's one I care about most so forgive me if these are very much different in need for power. I'd also like to be able to run Minecraft a little bit more intensively, same with Sea of Thieves.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm not too concerned with any of this other than having at least 2, very very much preferably 3 or more USB ports
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Storage is something I really don't want to have to battle with so I'm really looking for something with a TB, I'd consider something near 512gb though. This is the Laptop I have right now: Dell Inspiron 13. This Laptop: Refurbished Dell Inspiron 15 3520 is the closest thing to a decent upgrade and the right form factor and everything for a price I can afford that I've found, the only problem is the graphics processor is really not as powerful as I'd like. Still and upgrade and what I'll go with if I don't find any suitable alternatives, but I'm basically coming here to see if I can find any laptops that are this but more powerful, I'm not quite knowledgeable about Electronics, Laptops, graphics processors etc. to really be able to scope/hone in my research to find what I'm looking for and I really hope one of you can help me! Thank you to anyone who's taken the time to read this :)

laptop under 2lbs, 64GB RAM

Tldr: I'm looking for a machine at or under 2lbs, with minimum 64GB RAM. Looking for alternatives to GPD Pocket and Win Max lines.

* **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

Doesn't matter. Work pays.

* **Are you open to refurbs/used?**

New only. Because work purchasing rules.

* **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**

Under 2lbs, 64GB of RAM are my only requirements. Don't care about touchscreen etc.

* **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Under 2pbs, weight is crucial.

* **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

N/A

* **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

N/A

* **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

N/A

* **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Minimum 64GB RAM. That, plus Under 2lbs weight, are my only specific wishes.

* **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I know of GPD laptops. I'm looking at the Pocket 4, that's about to be released. I'm posting here to see if there's anything other than GPD that would fit my requirements, since Pocket 4 and Win Max are closest but not ideal (i don't need the game controller stuff of Win Max, and Pocket has a really tiny screen).

Thanks!

Need a new laptop for college?

Hi guys, recently my laptop just broke. Don’t even know what happened, it just died. Anyway, I’m looking into getting a new laptop for college next year. I’m majoring in stem and probably have a budget of NO MORE than $1000, less is preferred.

I do like gaming and used to have a gaming laptop. But I probably won’t get a laptop with a GPU, because they have so many downsides. So, if it had a solid integrated gpu, good enough to run a few basic games like stardew valley, that would be pretty cool.

Edit: also, not going to lie, it has to look cool or at least be like dark grey/ black.

(Also I hate macOS!!)

AMD Ryzen 5 7000 Series VS Intel 12th Generation Core i3

I am looking to get a new laptop and don't know much about CPUs, GPUs, etc. The two laptops I am looking at are almost exactly the same but they have different CPUs one has an Intel 12th gen i3 while the other has a AMD Ryzen 5 7000 series. The one with the intel chip is on sale while the other one isn't so I am not sure.

Btw the intel CPU laptop is 200 dollars cheaper than the 500 dollar AMD one.

Need a thin and light gaming laptop to replace PC.

* **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

 Up to $1600

* **Are you open to refurbs/used?**

 Yes

* **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**

I am open to ultra books, and laptops in general, but 2-in-1s are cool.. I need good build quality, and at least 6 hours of battery life. I NEED A DGPU or an EGPU option.

* **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Very. 4 lbs max. I want something thin and light if possible

* **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

 13-14 inches.

* **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I am a gamer. Two Point games, MSFS 2020 and 2024 (when it comes out), BeamNG, Forza, Minecraft

I want to be able to play at least at 250 fps medium settings.

* **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Not really. I love good keyboards though.

I am considering either getting something like a Legion Slim or a Zephyrus G14. Another option is a ThinkPad P14s with a 3070TI EGPU

~$1500, ~14", USA -- A very portable laptop that can be used for Working Anywhere. Matebook X Pro?

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$1500 --- USA

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Very important. Lighter and thinner is better. High quality build. I love(d) my current laptop: a Huawei Matebook X Pro. Battery life is also important (>5hrs).... I don't need a 2-in-1.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Same. Very important. Lighter and thinner is better.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

About ~14"

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I mainly use my laptop for work and programming. Between a remote desktop, a browser, compiling code, Teams, etc... the multitasking gets pretty heavy. I'd also like to do some light gaming, but nothing heavier than CS2. I don't do any serious photo editing or anything like that.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Maybe CS2 with a decent (~60) FPS. But this isn't a priority.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Lightweight and portable. Good build quality and touchpad. At least 500GB of SSD. Windows OS. Lots of RAM.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have loved my Huawei Matebook X Pro that I bought in 2018. It meets all of my expectations on quality and form factor. I'm only shopping again because I think some hardware is failing because I can't seem to fixed a daily/weekly BSOD. Is the current version of the Matebook X Pro still a well regarded laptop?
