The Laptop Form

Tips, PSAs, & Resources

Low Quality TN Displays

A lot of laptops today still use low quality TN displays. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p.

Comparison pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notable models:

  • Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.
  • Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available.

There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many IPS displays are far from perfect still.

False High-Res Displays

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models.

Notable models:

  • EUROCOM Tornado F5/F5W/X4C
  • Clevo w/ Samsung/LG '4K' 15.6"

Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K.

Confusing CPU branding

U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. More info is available here.

VR training development laptop

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1800 ideally, but I'm sure that's a pipe dream, so that can be stretched; $2800 absolute maximum

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Probably not, but I'll entertain them as alternatives if they're recommended

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance priority

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Relatively minor; it will usually be plugged in at an office but will travel between work and home every week, as well as fly around the country in carry-on numerous times each year.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

17" high-quality display

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

All of the above, really. Will use Unity Engine, Meta Development Suite, Unreal Engine 5, Blender, Meshroom, Photoshop, Captivate, Agisoft Metashape, Godot, Construct 3

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not necessarily playing games, but testing and demo'ing VR environments

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Keyboard with a numpad greatly preferred; media controls would be handy; 8K HDMI output; numerous high-speed USB inputs; ethernet capability required

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Don't need a "gaming laptop" with RGB or anything, but I'll take what I can get for the prices I've given; to be used in a professional office setting if that matters

im looking for a laptop with a 4080 that has good battery life that can last at least 5-6 hours for a day of uni, obv not playing any games under battery but uni work and programming. Id like the laptop to not look too bulky and look as less like a gaming laptop as possible if that makes sense, just a sleek look sort of like a razer blade or a macbook but want good performance for how much im paying. Can also buy the laptop in Canada and have it brought to me if that makes it better. thanks

Should I keep my Surface pro 9 or find an alternative?

Recently, I bought Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for about £1200 including insurance, keyboard and pen. However, the battery life really disappointed me as I expected at least 10 hours but it lasts a maximum of 5 to 6 hours with minimum use which is mainly just taking notes and solving questions on pdf.

I keep thinking that maybe I rushed into buying it without properly considering the alternatives.

The alternative that have come to my attention for now are:

○Samsung Galaxy book3 pro 360

○Dell XPS 9315

○ASUS ROG Z13 Flow GZ301ZE- I know this is a gaming laptop but the specs are way higher than the surface pro 9 but cheaper.

○Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8- I've heard a lot of good things about this one but personally couldn't find any source to buy it from in the UK.

My primary use will be doing university stuff which is note-taking, using Microsoft Office and annotating documents. So in your opinion do you think I should stick to surface pro 9 or should I return it and buy an alternative.

This is my first experience of buying a laptop and my knowledge of computers are close to zero so your help is greatly appreciated.

need basic no-frills, no-bloatware laptop to use for study/work

So basically I'm trying to learn SQL and maybe a bit of python or java. I just need a basic laptop that isn't loaded down with bloatware and nonsense. it will not be used for any kind of gaming, nor for listening to music. I literally just need a separate machine to play around in spreadsheets and not be distracted by shiny things.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

trying to stay under $300 USD, in US

Are you open to refurbs/used?

from a reputable dealer sure

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

i genuinely have no idea.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

not very

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

nope. only trying to run excel/word (or the free google equivalents) and do some SQL

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

who doesn't want a good keyboard and reliable build quality?? i don't need anything like fingerprint readers though

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

ideally this laptop would be little more than the OS and a web browser.

Buying help

Planning to invest in a laptop. I have two version of a model that I shortlisted. But I need help to understand if intel 14th gen rtx 4090 (about 900 bucks more) is a better option or 13th gen 4080? And if 4090 is an overkill. I plan to use it for ML tasks and casual gaming. So I am not sure if investing that money for 4gb of vram(4090) and marginal improvement in performance (14th gen) is worth it? I appreciate your suggestions.

Looking for 2-1 Laptop

Canada - $1,500 or less CAD budget.

I’m looking to purchase a 2-1 laptop. I currently have an Acer Spin 2-1 that I’ve had for about 5 years. I’d be happy with it again but wondering if there are other better options.

It will be used as both my work and personal laptop. Although i will most likely use my current spin for personal and the new one for work.

For work I use mostly Microsoft 365 products and email. Most of the time it’s connected to a docking station which is connected to monitors, keyboard and mouse. Need a minimum of 2 usb ports, 3 preferred. For personal I mostly use it for streaming videos and shows in Tent position.

Battery life is important. Better sound quality is great but would sacrifice for other things as I often use headphones or speakers.

Questionnaire in comment.

Thanks

Looking for suggestions

I'm looking for advice.

• Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $3000 USD

• Are you open to refurbs/used?

No

• How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality and performance

• How important is weight and thinness to you?

I would prefer more on the portable side but it isn't a deal breaker.

• Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 - 16 inches

• Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Eventually I would like to dabble in photo editing using Adobe Photoshop.

• If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If I game it would be very little. I would like the ability but it isn't a priority.

• Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/ touchpad)?

I plan on utilizing an Ultrawide Monitor with it and would want the ability for the graphics card to be utilized for the external monitor.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

max 1200€, preferably less

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

sure, but needs to be dependable, and need fairly exact advise on what to look for or what to choose

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

don't need/want touchpad, 2-in-1, etc. performance and battery are pretty important, build quality too, performance (and battery) trump form factor

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

not that important, though preferably not a brick, as I do travel

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

really want 15.6 in display

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

occasional GIMP (and similar), and light gaming, though I adapt the gaming to what the hardware does, not the other way around

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

see above

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I do a lot of typing for my academic work so keyboard and touchpad are important. don't want a finger-print reader or optical drives

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been thinking of an InfinityBook S15 from Tuxedocomputers: https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/TUXEDO-InfinityBook-S-15-Gen8.tuxedo

Tuxedocomputers has a bunch of good reviews but I can't find much negative about them, so I'm not sure if those reviews are all sponsored.

Linux users almost invariably recommend a used Thinkpad. But I'm I'm not sure how to make sure I'm getting a good used one.

Also open to new thinkpads

Thanks :)

Preferably not

Looking for basic work laptop, budget < $500 USD (US)

Hi all! Looking for a budget laptop to use at work that is light and smaller. Work provides me a 17” HP that is way too heavy and is also structurally breaking, very poor battery life.

Total budget:

  • between $300-$500, preferably less than 500.

Open to refurb vs used:

  • yes, but open to tips to make sure I’m not getting a bad product

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2 in 1, etc), build quality, performance, and battery life?

  • we use Citrix workspace, EPIC electronic medical record at work so would need to be able to run that well, looking for at least 6-8 hours of battery life. Windows IOS required.

How important is weight and thinness?

  • Very! I carry the laptop around at work, as well as walk to work most days. So this is really top priority for me.

Do you have a preferred screen size?

  • I would say 14 in or less, I currently have a 15.6” MSI that the battery cooked on and while it was perfect for the gaming and work I was doing, I don’t need such a versatile laptop now

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

  • no gaming or editing, I have a great desktop for that stuff. Really just need to be able to browse the internet with multiple tabs and use Citrix/EPIC

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices?

  • I do like a decent keyboard, I really don’t like the surface keyboard pads. Reliable quality would be preferred as well.

Any finishing thoughts/touches?

  • would definitely need to be a Windows running pc. I am open to refurb vs open box, I just want to make sure I would still be getting a good product. I really just need a good light laptop.

Thank you!!

I will mostly be using this for work in local government and for gaming like total war warhammer 3, Helldivers 2, Ghosts of Tsushima, etc. I like the idea of multitasking with the Duo, but the Zephyrus is a bit newer and cheaper.

Looking at old eBay laptops, please advise

I recently went through my cabinets and found a few dinosaur laptops and Decided to try to revive them with some lightweight Linux distros. The 1ghz Acer is useless for all but the most basic word processing. The 2011 MacBook Air still chugs along but has some battery and other issues. All of this has revived my interest in getting a cheap n good laptop to be able to browse web, check email, YouTube, office. This machine might end up being a backup for my realtor wife who has a crappy dell she is using.

There are a ton of these machines on eBay for less than $200. They look like circa 2015-16 business laptops. Are they any good? I know because business is usually a little 'tougher' than a plastic Walmart laptop and it would technically be used for my wife's business ventures. Has anyone purchased these and what is your experience. Probably would throw Linux mint or something else on it and call it a day.

Thanks

16" vs 17" - i5 vs i7

Hi,

I received a nice offer for an upgrade. From the pool of laptop offered to me only two stand out as worth thinking about, HP Omen 16 and HP Omen 17. Main use would be for Adobe Illustrator,Photoshop, After Effects plus some light gaming on breaks.

The 16 - specs i5-13420H, RTX 4050, 16GB RAM DDR5, 1TB SSD, FHD IPS 144Hz

The 17 - specs i7-13700HX, RTX4060, 16GB RAM DDR5, 1TB SSD, FHD IPS 144Hz

I'm tempted to go for the 17" due performance difference compared to 16" but im afraid of size. I will use it mostly at school and office, have a car so transport isnt an issue. Have rig at home so it would be a second machine. Currently I have Dell XPS 15 so the weight/dimension jump will be big.

Any experience coming from 15" to 17" will be appreciated.

Thanks

Thomas

I aspire to be an indie game dev and a content creator. plz recommend me a budget laptop which can get my work done

I originally considered buying an Aspire 7 with RTX 3050, tb4 port (a715-76g). Later I realized that an RTX 3050 ain't got much power in it, even though you could game and edit video it's not feasible for game development (especially for rendering in Blender) + eGPUs are rare, and expensive in the country I live in. so I started searching for RTX 4050 and RTX 3060 laptops ( mobile Radeon GPUs with sufficient power are either not available or too expensive for me), I discovered msi bravo 15 (r7537hs) and gigabyte g5(12450h or 12500h or 12650h) which are not far off from my initial budget. srgb% is not a problem as I will be using an external display. I don't plan on developing a game on the same scale as Cyberpunk, that's absurd for a single person like me but I won't be developing a 2d platformer. I want to develop a wave function collapse-based freeform building game with fps elements game. should I just wait for Nvidia to launch 50 series? I need a laptop before September.
aspire 7
msi bravo 15
gigabyte g5
I know that nobody is going to comment my post....but here goes nothing :')

Affordable Laptop for Watching Movies/Browsing

Hi! My Asus Zenbook UX305 (14") recently died on me after a good 7 years and I was quoted $130 to fix it. I don't mind fixing it but I heard once there's an issue with the motherboard, it would be better to just buy a new one because the laptop would keep acting up.

So I'm thinking of a new laptop instead. I would be using it infrequently (once or twice a month maybe) as I already have a PC. Under USD$400 ideally, light (very important) and 12-14".

I might be on-the-go next year, so it should ideally have a decent battery life and be capable of efficient browsing (multiple tabs open at once).

Or should I rebuy the UX305? Haha I'm in Singapore

Laptop suggestions for younger user interested in basic video editing

One general question I have is whether we think it's essential to get to a laptop with a dedicated graphics card or not. Our son is interested in video editing, but we're not talking about huge feature-length projects, just kids stuff for youtube. One suggestion we've gotten is the Lenovo Slim Pro 7 Laptop, so that's our starting reference point.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

-Ideally would like something in the $600-700 range, $800 max-

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

-Yes-

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Performance is the main concern. Battery life less important. Build quality moderately important but it's not like we need something rugged. The main additional thins is flexibility to use as tablet or at least lay flat for drawing.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

-Only a little bit-

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

-No preference-

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-I should know this shouldn't I? Not sure what video editing software but probably something mid-level, not fully professional. It's not going to be Adobe Final Cut. But yes video editing and playing minecraft are priorities-

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-Minecraft-

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-Touch Screen for sure - may also be doing digital art.-

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-We don't intend to overload the laptop with other data and content. We plan for this to be a dedicated video editing + minecraft machine for them. They like minecraft a lot but they're not a gamer in the sense that they'll be interested in getting a bunch of other games-

From IdeaPad to ThinkPad?

Hello all, I've used the Lenovo IdeaPad 330s for about 5 years now and I've been generally happy with it for mostly consumer-based stuff and light work. Ryzen 5/ 8GB memory/ 128GB SSD.

I am considering upgrading to a ThinkPad as I transition to more remote work. Is this worth it, or would the IdeaPad slim 5i with a i7 processor/ 16GB memory/ 1 TB SSD be the noticeable upgrade I'm looking for?

I am looking at the T16 or E16 ThinkPads and they have similar offerings for processors/ memory/ storage so what's the real benefit of the ThinkPad? Just robustness and build quality?

Please let me know if there is something I'm overlooking, as my budget is around $1,000 and these all seem fairly similar to me.

Thank you.

How important is a dedicated graphics card?

Sorry that this isn’t in the proper form, but I’m not really asking for a laptop suggestion and am just asking a more general question.

I’m looking for a laptop in the $600-800 range and I was wondering if it would be best to just get the best possible cpu possible or if I should compromise so that I could get a dedicated graphics card. Battery life is very important and I know that a graphics card can totally kill your battery life. I’m not going to be doing any modern gaming, nor will I be using 3d software so I was wondering what you guys think? And as a second question is 32gb of RAM overkill especially if I’m just going integrated graphics or is it worthwhile?
